Episode 322: Nova Scotia's rugged coastline and treacherous waters have made it a graveyard for ships throughout history. The SS Atlantic, a White Star Line steamship, sank off Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873, in one of the worst maritime disasters before the Titanic. On its 19th voyage from Liverpool to New York with around 975 people on board, the ship ran short of coal and diverted to Halifax. Navigational errors caused it to strike rocks near Prospect, Nova Scotia. Rough seas hindered lifeboat launches, trapping many passengers below deck. Local fishermen and others aided in rescue efforts, but 562 people perished, marking it the greatest civilian loss in the North Atlantic at that time. Last time we spoke about the intense battle for Munda. The most important objective of the New Georgia campaign, the seizure of Munda had come at long last. The 43rd, 37th and 25th divisions all performed an envelopment offensive against Munda, but in their way were extremely formidable Japanese fortifications. It was a real slogfest seeing tremendous casualties for both sides of the conflict. However the Americans were able to breakthrough some of the Japanese bunkers, tunnels and pillboxes thanks largely to the use of flamethrowers which were becoming more and more popular on the battlefield of the Pacific. Munda was finally captured and now the Japanese had to withdraw to other areas like Vila to keep the fight alive. On the seas, commander Frederick Moosbrugger unleashed some improved mark 14 torpedoes at the IJN and scored a major victory sending 3 destroyed to their grave and countless sailors and soldiers.  This episode is the Komiatum Offensive Welcome to the Pacific War Podcast Week by Week, I am your dutiful host Craig Watson. If you are still hungry for some more history related content, over on my channel, the Pacific War Channel you can find a few videos all the way from the Opium Wars of the 1800's until the end of the Pacific War in 1945.    So last week we talked exclusively about the New Georgia campaign, so today as you guessed it we are diving back over to New Guinea. You know when it comes to the big and popular aspects of the war, Guadalcanal usually takes the leading role, but campaigns like New Guinea seem to always fall to the wayside as they say. Yet the battle for New Guinea was just as important, it took significant resources away from the Empire of Japan. We are soon to reach the climax of the Lae-Salamaua campaign, things are really starting to heat up. Now the last time we were over on Green Hell, Brigadier Moten had just ordered the 2/6th battalion to secure Bobdubi ridge, while the 2/5th assault Mount Tambu. By the end of July, the Coane Force was beginning to occupy Tambu Bay. The 3rd battalion, 162nd of Archibald Roosevelt were securing the Boisi area with two of their companies hitting slopes west of Tambu Bay, while the 2nd battalion assembled itself at Tambu Bay. By seizing Tambu Bay, the artillery could now take up a good position to better support the troops. Further north, Brigadier Heathcote Hammer was reorganizing his 15th brigade for a new attack against the Old Vickers position. On July 24th, he held an officers conference at Gwaibolom. Hammer laid out plans to employ the 58/59th battalion against Erskine Creek and Old Vickers. The commander of the 58/59th, Lt Colonel Patrick Starr received the order from Hammer, but also a letter directed at him. In the letter Hammer laid out a ton of criticisms against his unit, some of his officers and by implication Starr himself. The main criticisms were based largely on ineffective ground operations such as the unit lacking adequate knowledge of where their neighboring units were or that of the enemy. But as we know, this unit had not received proper training and it really was a baptism under fire kind of situation. But like they say about swimming, sometimes you gotta be thrown into the pool, and boy were they. Following some rather poorly planned and failed attacks back on June 30th, the 58/59th now adopted a more measure approach against the Old Vickers position. Hammer also helped with his reorganizing efforts. Hammer ordered Company A to head further north, while Major Warfe's commandos would take over the defenses for Gwaibolom; General Savige was assigned the 2/7th to help reinforce the 15th brigade; the 2/6th were ordered to advance along the Sugarcane Ridge to clear a way forward, but would run into a 100 Japanese strong position north off the ridge. On July 26th, the Australians concentrated their 25 pounders upon the ridge before launching a frontal assault. Meanwhile Brigadier General Ralph Coane renewed their attack against Roosevelt Ridge on July 27th. Coane ordered the still assembling 2nd battalion, 162nd regiment for the task. 100 men of E company advanced using a creek line parallel to the ridge, going through some thick jungle. They marched single file, hooking back towards a spur that led towards a small knoll on its crest, looking for a way to break the Japanese defenses. But once they reached the crest, they began taking heavy fire and although they established themselves firmly on a shoulder of ground below the ridge, they could advance no further. Meanwhile the 2/6th were lobbing 25 pounders accurately over the Old Vicker's position, forcing the Japanese to flee to the refugee of their underground shelters. It basically had become a routine of taking a bombardment and awaiting some screaming Australians or Americans afterwards for most of the Japanese defenders by this point. However no assault came. On July 28th another bombardment was on its way, but this one was directed on the Coconuts area. Starting at 2:45, two 25 pounders from Tambu Bay fired hundreds of rounds alongside some 3 inch mortars in an attempt to thwart the Japanese from sending reinforcement over to the Old Vickers position. During the final 5 minutes of what was a 15 minute bombardment, it turned into a creeping barrage allowing C Company of the 58/59th to advance. The bombardment made a ton of smoke aiding the men. Three platoons attacked the Old vickers position simultaneously. Platoon 7 of Butch Proby charged across some exposed ground at the center of the position; Platoon 13 of Lt Jack Evans attacked the left; while Platoon 15 of Sergeant Vic Hammond attacked from the right. The platoons managed to successfully overrun the Japanese forward bunkers and reached the crest just as the unsuspecting Japanese there were emerging from their dugouts. A heavy firefight broke out, but it was the defenders who began fleeing for their lives towards the Coconuts area. As the men consolidated the Old vickers position they found 17 dead Japanese, but also a large amount of abandoned booty. A 70mm gun with 300 shells, 4 light machine guns, 1 medium machine gun and 28 rifles which the Australians gladly grabbed. Hammer expected the Japanese to launch a vicious counterattack so he rapidly ordered the 2/7th battalion to send the fresh A Company of Captain Septimus Cramp over to relieve the exhausted C Company. Meanwhile B Company of the 2/6th were assaulting Sugarcane Ridge being supported by 3 inch mortars and 4 Vickers guns from the 2/6th field regiment along the Tambu Bay coast. Coming from Ambush Knoll, Platoon 10 led by Lt Clive Trethewie made a frontal assault, but machine gun fire from atop Sugarcane Ridge halted them quickly. Platoon 12 led by Sergeant Stan White and Platoon 11 of Lt Ted Exton were hooking around the ridge to attack the enemy's rear. The Japanese defenders had assumed the ridge was too steep in its rear position and were completely taken by surprise by the attack, seeing Extoons Platoon 11 overrun them. The Japanese were forced to flee for their lives. The Japanese attempted a dusk counterattack to reclaim the ridge, but it failed. On July 28th, with E Company stalled, F company was brought up to help out, taking up a position to E Company's left. They both tried to assault the ridge together, but gained little ground and were forced to dig in as the Japanese harassed them with counterattacks. The problem really was the Japanese were simply too well dug in. They held a steep narrow crest on the ridge, with the typical camouflaged pillboxes, mutually supporting machine gun nests, an intricate network of underground tunnels, lets call it the “Japanese special” haha, it will be seen quite often going forward into this war. The allied artillery and mortar bombardments could do little to actually hurt the Japanese, but it did cause them to take shelter within their tunnels, then there was the hope the assaulting forces got close enough before the Japanese stormed out again, which feels a lot like battles from WW1. In the meantime Major Roosevelt's battalion were working to cut off the Japanese supply routes to the ridge. He dispatched multiple patrols to take up positions along junctions and tracks between Scout ridge, Roosevelt Ridge and Mount Tambu. The men ran into skirmishes with Japanese supply efforts, greatly hindering them. But with the lack of progress by Coane's force concerned certain commanders like General Savige who began to criticize Coane for a lack of control and discipline over the men. Savige ordered him to push on immediately to capture Roosevelt Ridge, but in response Coane protested that he needed more reinforcements to seize the heavily fortified position. Likewise the lack of progress over at Mount Tambu was also annoying commanders. Taylor Force had just relieved the exhausted 2/5th battalion on the 28th. Several companies consisting of around 400 men from the 1st battalion, 162nd regiment coming over from Nassau Bay took up positions around Mount Tambu. Australian mortar crews and stretcher bearers remaining in the line to support their American comrades with one company of the 2/5th staying behind likewise. Moten planned for a new attack, slated for the 30th, to be followed with attacks against Goodview Junction and Orodubi by the 2/5th and 2/6th respectively. To open up the new attack, 8 105mm guns positioned at Buigap Creek Valley alongside 5 25 pounders position at Tambu Bay opened fire in the morning firing around 200 rounds per gun for an hour and a half. The Americans began their assault with Platoons 2 and 3 charging the ridge while Platoon 1 awaited in reserve. For 45 minutes the two leading platoons moved 150 meters across the Japanese front's right shoulder. They managed to knock out 6 out of 8 bunkers on the shoulder before attempting to advance further, but the defenders second tier line three meters higher up opened fire upon them and numerous grenades came rolling down the slope. The fire was too much, with the defenders using their tunnel and trench system to deadly effect taking up numerous positions to fire down on the Americans. The two platoons were halted dead in their tracks as the third platoon was brought up, but it made no difference. A legendary figure emerged from this action. For those of you from down unda, you probably already know the story, but for those of you who down, Corporal Leslie Bull Allen became a hero this day. Bull Allen was born in 1918, in Ballarant Victoria and when WW2 broke out he volunteered for service with the 2nd Australian imperial force. He served the 2/5th in Palestine where he became a stretcher bearer. He served in Libya and Syria where he received the nickname Bull for getting a reputation to having a cool head under fire. He was a fairly big boy, 5”11, laborer type build and he had a really deep laugh his comrades would remark “you could hear him a mile off! Bull was thus one of the battalion's most recognisable…and one of its most popular characters”. After facing the Italians, French and Germans, Bull was sent to New Guinea. He had served during the Wau battle where he received a Military medal for carrying out comrades under intense fire, his citation read “Private Allen's bearing and his untiring efforts in tending the wounded and helping with rations and stores were an inspiration”. On July the 30th when the Americans were storming Mount Tambu and got botched down, Allen was one of the stretcher bearers who came running up and by himself carried 12 American servicemen to safety. There's a famous photograph of Bull carrying an American soldier over his shoulders who had been knocked unconscious by a mortar, I do recommend googling it. And of course, I am a Sabaton fan and I would be remiss not to mention there is a song dedicated to Bull Allen, worth a listen. I got to sit down with Sabaton at a bar once in Montreal, the first time they came to north america, by the way, just gloating. Bull Allen received the Silver Star for his heroism from the United States. But as much as I'd like to end it there, I would also like to mention the reality of war. Bull put on a straight face and showed no fear as he saved the men, but as early as 1941 he was showing psychological issues. He had been admitted to a hospital in Libya, suffering from anxiety neurosis, again what we call acute combat stress or combat stress reaction. By the time he saved those boys on Mount Tambu his health was being taxed heavily. Towards the end of 1944, Bull would begin lashing out at superior officers and got himself court martialed and demoted to private. His psychological health, alongside a few bouts of malaria took a horrible toll on him creating numerous anxiety ridden episodes seeing him discharged from duty as he was not deemed medically fit. Bull found it difficult in the post war years suffering from post traumatic stress, and during one point he lost the ability to speak for 6 months. He spent his life after the war working as a laborer and then as a theater nurse at the Ballarat Base hospital. Bull became quite a popular fellow around Ballarant and would pass away on May 11th of 1982 from diabetes and other complications. He is a staple on Anzac Day and a famous image of the Australian war effort during the Pacific War. Mount Tambu was not taken that day, though the first line of bunkers were battered. Moten realized frontally attacking such fortifications was suicide, so he elected to cut off Mount Tambu instead. With the Americans failing, the 2/5th and 2/6th planned attacks changed to taking up positions to surround Mount Tambu. Back on the 29th, Major Warfe took his men to attack what was known as the Timbered knoll held by some Japanese. He sent A Platoon led by John Lewin south along its ridge. They were supported by artillery from Tambu Bay. At 4pm the artillery and mortars started blasting away for 15 minutes. The commandos assaulted the knoll from its northern side, but were quickly pinned down by machine gun fire. Around 10 men advanced along the Bench Cut track east of the Timbered Knoll and attacked it from the south, successfully surprising the defenders, forcing them to flee. Following the capture of the Timbered Knoll, Warfe wanted to press onwards to Orodubi, but Brigadier Hammer ordered his commandos to hold their position as he did not want to open up any gaps along the ridge. Also on the 29th, General Herring for the first time informed General Savige of the true offensive going on which was against Lae rather than Salamaua, indicating to him that the role of his 3rd division was to hold the enemy down in the Salamaua area. Likewise Moten had devised a new plan to drive the enemy from Mount Tambu. It turned out a patrol from the 2/6th had discovered a route going from Ambush Knoll to the Buirali Creek which would allow forces to cut off the Komiatum track, thus isolating the Mount Tambu and Goodview junction. The 2/6 sent 4 patrols out searching for how to ford the Buirali Creek going up to the Kiamatum ridge, some of which probed Japanese positions.  To the north, Captain Edwin Griff's B Company of the 58/59th advanced to Buggert preparing to attack the Coconuts area. On the 30th as they began their attack, they were met with heavy fit around 80 yards south of the South Coconuts. Forced to dig in the Australians spent the night repelling 3 counterattacks with a handful of men receiving some nasty bayonet and knife wounds. By the morning of the 31st Griff was down to 38 effective men and at 7:20am a 4th Japanese counterattack consisting of a hundred or so men overwhelmed his position. Griff was forced to withdraw to a village west of the Old Vickers position. While this was going on, Hammer had sent companies over to cut the Komiatum and Bench tracks using his A company and C Company. Moten reinforced him with A company of the 2/7th in the hopes such actions would press the Japanese to move more units from Lae over the Salamaua area. It was a huge success as by the end of July the Salamaua area counted with more than 8000 troops. However with all of these troops at Salamaua also required the allies to boost up their commitment in the area, thus Brigadier Raymond Monaghan with the 29th brigade were landed at Nassau Bay for the task. They were assigned to reinforce the Coane force which was still struggling against Roosevelt ridge. Over on the Japanese side, General Adachi decided to reinforce Lae's defenses. He deployed the 2nd battalion, 80th regiment who would be coming over from Finschhafen, however they would never make it to Lae as by the time they were going to depart they were forced to stay put because the Australians were threatening  the region. Adachi also ordered the Shoge detachment of Major General Shoge Ryoichi to depart Wewak. His force consisted of the 1st and 2nd battalions of the 238th regiment and a battalion of the 41st mountain artillery regiment. Elements of the 238th regiment began leaving Wewak traveling in groups of 3 motor landing crafts every two nights. Each MLC had 50 men and their supplies packed in like sardines. Soon small fishing boats were also carrying 20 men, by late July the 2nd battalion, 238th had all moved from Wewak to Alexishafen. From Alexishafen they traveled again by night and by MLC to Finschhafen and from there finally to Lae. However due to increased attacks and losses upon the MLCS countless men would be left at Finschhafen. Some were ordered to march overland to Lae, but it was a nightmare of a trip. On August 1st, the 1st battalion, 80th regiment had taken up positions along the side of the Old Vickers position and began firing upon its defenders. They were covered by mortars as they charged up the steep terrain in an enveloping movements towards Grassy Knoll. Captain Edwin Griff's B company harassed them from the west, and by the following morning the 2/7th battalion were able to push the Japanese back. To the north in the Coconuts, Pimple Knoll and the Sugarcane Knoll more Japanese attacks were occurring, but the defenders held the former Japanese fortifications giving them a distinct edge. By the afternoon the Japanese were sniping men in the Old Vickers and Sugarcane Knoll, trying to cover their assault units. By August 3rd, the Japanese unleashed another assault against the entire perimeter, seeing the fiercest fighting take place in an area in front of the 8th Platoon led by Corporal Alan Naismith. Alan ended up crawling forward with grenades in hand before tossing them down the steep slopes of Old Vickers killing many Japanese. Seeing the battle going nowhere, the Japanese unleashed a banzai charge at night as a last ditch effort to break through, but were ultimately forced to withdraw. Seeing three full days of frontal assaults fail, the Japanese then elected to advance further south along a ridge and dug in between the Old Vickers and Buggert. This threatened to encircle the 2/7th, so Griff's B Company were ordered to restore the line of communications to Old Vickers. Griff ordered a concentrated bombardment of 30 mortars before his company stormed the slope the Japanese dug in on. Two platoons quickly broke through towards Sugarcane Knoll and in the process forced the Japanese to withdraw back over to the Coconuts area. Griff then ordered his company to perform mop up operations as some Japanese had stayed in their foxholes. Yet the performance overall for the 58/59th had displeased Hammer who now decided to place them under Major Warfe's command. They would also be redeployed over to the Gwaibolom area, while the commandos would take over their Old Vickers position. For a few days the 2/7th performed patrols around the Coconuts area to prepare for a final attack against it. Over at Mount Tambu, on August 4th, Captain Cam Bennett's B Company and Walters A Company of the 2/5th successfully surprise attacked the defenders atop a small knoll known as Hodge's Knoll. However they were soon met with heavy counterattacks from three sides dislodging them in the late afternoon. The next day, Moten ordered the 2/6th battalion to advance along the Stephens Track, while its D company led by Captain Harold Laver would take an alternate path towards the Komiatum ridge heading north of Goodview. During the afternoon, a forward patrol of Company D found a route through the jungle to Komiatum village, but the route proved very difficult for the full company to traverse. Alongside this discovery, a patrol from Taylor Force found a small ridge north of Komiatum that was unoccupied named Davidson ridge. By August 6th, Moten and Savige concluded their plan to isolate and reduce Mount Tambu. The 2/6th would secure Komiatum ridge to the northwest; Coane Force would hit Roosevelt and Scout ridge; Lt Colonel Charlie Davidsons 42nd battalion would hit a key ridge to the north, Ie: the one that was to be called Davidson; the 2/5th would hit Goodview junction and the 15th brigade would contain assault the Coconuts area containing the enemy at Tambu knoll and Orodubi. General Herring liked the plan and urged General Savige to quote "drive Coane on to the capture of Roosevelt Ridge even if the cost is higher than he cares about". Herring also added that he could take Savige's requests to the higher authorities and upon stating that Savige immediately requested Coane and Major Roosevelt be relieved of their commands. Again a lot of the interpersonal and command issues were due to MacArthurs tampering with Alamo Force. Brigadier Coane was told by Fuller he was a separate command from MacKechnie and Colonel Roosevelt continuously refused to obey orders from MacKechnie stating he was not under Australian command. It took until July 19th, for Herring to clarify things that the Australians were in charge of operations in the Nassau Bay area. Combine this with the lack of progress and it was no surprise people were gunning to sack another. On August 7th the first units of Davidsons 42nd battalion landed at Nassau bay at 2am and Coane requested that Davidson immediately march north. Davidson refused to do so until his men got a hot meal and some sleep angering Coane. Then when Davidson and his men reach Duali he was informed Major Stephen Hodgman was waiting with orders from Moten that it was he who was taking operational command. Coane was only to have command over supply communications and rations. When Davidson reached Tambu Bay on the 8th he met with Coane who was greatly frustrated that he was unable to use Davidsons units to hit Roosevelt ridge. Coane told him “If I can't do as I want with you, I don't consider you under my command at all”. It was quite fortunate as MacArthur soon relieved Coane and Roosevelt of their commands. As General Savige would later write “MacArthur asked me for my views on Coane and Roosevelt and I gave them strongly…I had my bags packed but MacArthur supported me”. Thus MacArthur sides with Herring and Savige and as a result Colonel MacKechnie was given back command over the 162nd regiment which was taken away from the 41st division directly under Savige's command. So much sneaky maneuvering going on by MacArthur's team. On August the 9th Savige visited Motens HQ, then Hammers, then the 58/59th battalions and finally the 2/6th. He was making a tour of the front lines trying to raise morale for the Australians. The next day, the 42nd battalion finally got into position at Tambu Bay where they received confirmation of their orders to seize Davidson ridge. By the 11th the men were climbing the ridge, facing no opposition and it was fully occupied by the 12th. Also on the 12th, MacKechnie began his attack against Roosevelt ridge deploying his 2nd battalion on the right flank and the 3rd on the left. The 2nd battalion established a position on the ridge crest rappelling several counterattacks throughout the day. After a 1.5hr artillery barrage of over 2000 rounds the 2nd battalion charged the ridge and successfully breached the Japanese line in three points. Meanwhile the 3rd battalion, 66th regiment were fighting for their lives, but by nightfall two Australian companies were now occupying high knolls around 500 yards apart. The 3rd battalion, 238th regiment had just begun arriving to Salamaua and were quickly redirected to help out the men on Roosevelt ridge. It would all be for naught however as by the 14th, the Australians pushed the Japanese to the eastern end of the ridge. From a Historian who covered the 41st division “At about 13:15 the jungles north, south and west of Roosevelt Ridge shook and shivered to the sustained blast. The mountains and ridges threw the echo back and forth, down and out, and the quiet white-capped sea to the east, ringing the outer third of Roosevelt Ridge, grew dark a s it received the eruption of earth and steel on that stricken shoulder of land. Scores of guns—75-mm howitzers, Aussie 25-pounders, 20-mms, Bofors, light and heavy machine-guns, even small arms—had opened up simultaneously on the enemy-held ridge. A score or more Allied fighters and bombers had swooped low to strafe its dome and tons of bombs released from the B-24s and B-25s fell straight and true, to detonate, shatter, rip and tear and to deliver certain death at that moment on an August afternoon. Those who watched from the beach saw the top fourth of the ridge lift perceptibly into the air and then fall into the waiting sea. In a scant twenty minutes all that remained of the objective was a denuded, redly scarred hill over which infantrymen already were clambering, destroying what remained of a battered and stunned enemy.” By the late afternoon, Roosevelt Ridge was finally firmly in the hands of the allies. MacKechnie could not however advance any further as his lines were already overextended. The Japanese withdrew to the nearby Scout Ridge where the 238th regiment reinforcements also came to defend.  While this was occurring the 2/7th were advancing upon the Coconuts area. Captain Andrew Rooke led the Bena platoon of Company A alongside Platoon 9 to hit the steep eastern approaches of the South coconuts; Captain Fred Barr's B company advanced upon the North Coconuts from the west. August the 14th began with a heavy airstrike made up of 22 B-24's and 7 B-17's. Starting at 9:30am as told to us by Axel Olsen observing from the Old Vickers “with a noise like the rushing of a great wind', the bombs passed over the heads of the waiting assault troops. ‘Trees, logs and other rubbish flew through the fall [sic] of dust which now cloaked the target.' The observers at Old Vickers observed, ‘It seemed that nothing could have lived in the midst of devastation loosed by the planes.” At 10:10 artillery began to bombard the area for an hour and half. As the artillery ceased, 3 inch mortars continued to fire covering the approach of the infantry who were using smoke bombs. As Axel Olsen wrote observing from the Old Vickers  “came a terribly fierce raking with Vickers guns firing through the haze from smoke bombs”. The Australian assault battered the north coconuts position which was guarded by two pillboxes connected to weapon pits using crawl trenches. The area had suffered hard from the bombardments easily allowing the Australians to seize it. However the southern defenses of the south Coconuts found defenders resisting hard in their trenches. The center Coconuts position like the north had nearly been obliterated by the bombing allowing B company to make progress, but soon they were pulling back to the north coconuts position. During the night, allied platoons came across a Japanese communication line going over the Salamua-Bobdubi track, so they cut it to prevent reinforcements. For the next two days, patrols and mortar fire were harassing the south coconuts defenders gradually forcing them to evacuate. By August the 17th the Coconuts and northern end towards Bobdubi were firmly in Australian hands. With all of these gains in hand, Moten was finally ready to attack Komiatum. On August the 15th,  Captain Edgar's A Company, Captain Laver's D Company of the 2/6th battalion took up a position due west of Laver's Knoll. Yes the future names of these knolls and ridges really does seem to give away what happens in the stories haha. Laver's Knoll was a key feature of the Komiatum ridge and taking it would allow the allies to apply more pressure upon the enemy. On the morning of the 16th, the 2/5th battalion performed a diversionary attack against Goodview, while A and B Companies advanced up the Komiatum ridge under a creeping barrage. The men were fortunate as the Japanese were forced to flee during the artillery fire, allowing Laver's knoll to be seized quite easily. The men dug in immediately allowing Lt Les Johnson's platoon 17 to capture, you guessed it Johnson's knoll. During WW2 if you really wanted something named after you, all you had to do was travel to Green Hell. Johnson and his men dug in on the knoll and soon Japanese fire was directed at them. Japanese counterattacks were lobbed from their south and west before nightfall, but they managed to hold on. During the night the 42nd battalion began using Vicker guns and mortars from Davidson ridge to help harass the enemy. Around dawn on the 17th, the Japanese unleashed another counter attack against Johnson knoll, this time the enemy got within just meters of the Australian defenders. After dusk even more counterattacks were made seeing 217 deaths, 380 wounded and 301 sick Japanese after all was said and done. The attacks were tossed back and soon Vickers machine guns were brought up to Laver's Knoll to add to the Japanese misery. Unable to break the allied push onto the Komiatum ridge, the Japanese began to become more and more desperate. Artillery and aerial bombardment on top of enveloping maneuvers by the Australians were taking a heavy toll. The Japanese had suffered over 900 casualties since July 23rd and with more and more men dying by the minute, General Nakano ordered a withdrawal from Komiatum to be carried out on the night of August 19th. Nakano was still under the illusion Salamaua was the main target. The next day the Taylor Force and 2/5th found Mount Tambu and Goodview suddenly unoccupied and finally seized their objectives. General Savige personally came over to congratulate the men who took Laver's knoll, but this was to be his last action in command of the 3rd division. Blamey decided to replace  Savige with the commander of the 5th division General Edward Milford. Milford would later find out the reason for Savige's sacking was because General Herring was greatly annoyed that a supply line to the coast had not been opened, which was desperately needed to relieve supply aircraft for the upcoming attack on Lae. Herring told Milford that Savige had never visited the front line because he was too old, but as I just mentioned this was false, Savage had in fact visited Mubo and Komiatum. Major General Frank Berryman working in Blamey's HQ, who remained quite close to the man, who often sought out his advice believed General Herring was unjustified in his sacking of Savige. Berryman would point out “ Herring ‘not giving Savige a fair burl… Savige having to fight Herring as well as Japs. Savige had done well and we had misjudged him'.Savige bitterly handed over his command, greatly disappointed he would not get to see the final capture of Salamaua. But he did not depart unrewarded, as he received a Companion of the order of Bath for his services during the campaign with his citation reading; Maj-Gen. Savige had control of the Battle for Salamaua from 30 Jun. 43 till his relief on 26 Aug. 43. The battle was finally won on 11 Sep. 43—the credit for victory must rest with Maj-Gen. Savige during whose period of command, the back of the enemy's defence was broken. The nature of the country rendered great assistance to the defender, and careful planning alone enabled the defences to be overcome. The supplying of our forward troops was also a terrific problem. Maj-Gen. Savige triumphed over all these difficulties, his men were kept supplied, they were encouraged to endure the most dreadful hardships, and to overcome great difficulties of terrain. Maj-Gen. Savige's plans were well conceived and he saw them carried through. The success achieved is of the greatest importance to the Allied cause, and Maj-Gen. Savige by his fine leadership has made a very real contribution to the ultimate success of the United nations. The victories won over the enemy at the battles for Mubo and Komiatum were due to his well conceived plans and energetic execution. The boys down unda had seized control over vital positions forcing the Japanese into more and more desperate defensive measures taking horrifying casualties in the process.

Hi, I'm Mike Cuevas to real estate marketing. And this podcast is all about building a strong personal brand people have come to know, like trust and most importantly, refer. But remember, it is not their job to remember what you do for a living. It's your job to remind them. Let's get started. What's up, ladies and gentlemen, welcome another episode of the real estate marketing dude podcast. That's what we're gonna be talking about today is standing out and being a little bit different. And our guest today, actually, I can pitch to be on the show all the time, like people are always gonna be on the show. Most people want to sell their shit. But this dude actually sent me an video specifically to me via email, which got my attention, which then we're talking now and we're on the show, because otherwise I wouldn't have looked at it. And it was how he was communicating with me that really got my attention. And I'm like, Oh, shit, this is great. But guess what, he did it on a video. A lot of people send pitches here all the time. And okay, we'll do it through text based email. And then it's the same thing. It's almost like you feel it. It's a regurgitated copy and paste email from some kind of podcast booking agency that always reaches out to me and says, Oh, I have a new guest for you, blah, blah, blah, I'm like, your This isn't authentic. It's Bs, and most of them I delete. But this dude gets a does a video, even trust me by first name, because Hey, Mike, I know, I really want to get on your podcast I've shown us he walked me through his product and all the stuff that he has in his place. And it was engaging. And because he did that, I was like, dude, let's do that show. Otherwise, we might not have done the show. So what we're gonna be chatting about today, is that how do you get people's attention that are trying to stick out? And how do you do that in marketing? How do you do that in real estate? Through digital through direct mail, personalized direct mail, but at the end of the day, here's what works guys. I don't care what the hell you're doing authenticity, authenticity, people feeling like you're one on one communication, people feeling like you're just the only one they're gonna get attention to. So that's exactly we're gonna chat about. So without further ado, I want to introduce the CEO of audience.co. Mr. Jesse Stein. How're you doing, buddy? Great. Thanks for having me. Mike. You want to tell everyone a little quick intro? Who are you? What do you do? What is audience and I got all kinds of questions for you. Yeah, so I started audience bout four years ago, we've been selling in earnest for two years we've got now 1000s of real estate agents on the platform. I started a company called sports memorabilia.com. I bought that as a raw domain in 2005. And with a team of people eminently smarter and more talented than me, which is a common theme in my career. We built it into the biggest autograph store on the internet, a top 500 internet retailer ended up selling it to fanatics. But one of the ways we grew it was through handwritten notes. And we sent handwritten notes to customers. And we realized that the clients that received notes, spent more money with us left better reviews, referred more business, they were easier to deal with. There's just a virtuous circle to sending handwritten notes. But there was no scale to the process, because we were having contractors, people in our warehouse assistants writing the notes, so there was no scale, the handwriting was often terracing. And there was no way to run campaigns, there was no way to really follow up and figure out, you know, when was the last time I sent to notes, a trigger note to and so forth. So I was kind of waiting for someone to do it. And all I kept getting in my physical mailbox, were notes that pretended to look handwritten, but really weren't. I'm sure all of us have received those notes. And I just noticed that the mail that was arriving into my physical mailbox was not making it to my kitchen counter consistently. So we went out, I hired a software engineering team. And we built this incredible software. And we have these amazing robots. And what we did was because of my backgrounds in digital marketing, I got started in digital marketing in 99. Actually, that's when I started my first online retailer, and learn how to build sales funnels and websites and learn how to buy online media and all that way back in the early 2000s. And have built that over time. So I always knew that audience would be a combination of handwritten notes with digital marketing follow up, because when you send the note, that's great. But now you need to follow the user journey, right? You need to follow that prospect on his or her journey from the note all the way through to online so from the mailbox to the inbox, and so what we've builtIs this company where we've optimized every facet of the note itself. So it's on a fixed stock card, it's a bifold. Note, what we do is we create a beautiful graphic for the front of the note, we have a whole graphics team all unique graphics, what we do is optimize for the chances that people will keep and display the note because that homeowner probably isn't interested in listing his role right then and there. But when they are your top of mind, and the key is to get them to keep it that's why we do a bifold. Note, every character of every note we do is written with a real pen by our handwriting robots that use the same pressure slant and flow as a human. They write in 15 Different fonts, they're super cool to look at. They vary up the left and right margins, they even do synonym replacement. So two neighbors in a building or block can hold up notes they got from us. And they look totally different. We do totally different graphics. So what happens is, and we even do a QR code sticker directly on the note. So what happens is it's all trackable. So people reflexively, because of COVID menus, they reflexively take up their phones, and they scan the QR code. And they don't even need to reach out to you. And it can go to a landing page of your of your choice. But what happens is, you the client, the real estate agent get pinged automatically when they scan it. And then what we do this is magic, we find all the accurate email addresses and social handles of everyone we send notes to, and then directly inside our app, it's as easy as clicking and you follow up by email, you follow up and connect with them on LinkedIn, and Instagram and everyone where else everyone knows marketing in 2023 is integrated multichannel. So you can't just do stuff in a vacuum. And so I saw our competitors out there, before I started the company, I saw that they were just doing the notes. And you know, they were naming the company is really old school things that had to do with, you know, handwriting and addresses and stuff. And I never saw it that way. I just see this as an outbound marketing platform. That's why we named it audience. And we also have beautiful maps feature where you can go right in, you can put an address in, and then you can do circle prospecting. And so we automatically detect, when you list or sell a home, we trigger an email to you click, and then you can find all the properties right around this home. So right now I just happen to be on the maps feature. And we found 309 properties around this property and Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and it's as easy as clicking twice. And then you trigger just listed just sold mailers in the form of handwritten notes to everybody around the property you just listed or sold. So we're about two and a half times the cost of printed direct mail. But we're about eight times the response just in the first 30 days. And then the half life on the ROI is really long, because people keep a display and what I mean by that is the agent will get we've worked with so many agents now and there's no no wonder that folks like Chris Heller are investors, Tom ferries an investor, we have all these super happy clients, you can go to audience.co Check out all the all the testimonials. But it's really you know, you talked about it earlier, Mike, it's about being consistently useful and adding value and developing expertise, authority and trust. So a lot of the note templates, we will hold template library, because we've sent millions and millions of notes. They're all about building expertise, offering offering analysis about the market. It's not our notes are not sell, sell, sell. It's delayed gratification. We're working with top agents who are not dabbling in real estate. They're not tau dippers, it's not a hobby. We're working with folks for whom real estate is a career. And so it's all about building that incredible foundation using the notes. And then the digital handshake of crossing over into digital. And it works like a charm. I love it. Suppose we talked about direct mail, my blog last week was about direct mail. So let's unpack this really quick. And let me tell you why it works. First off is i No one's in the mailbox anymore. That's why I want to be there. And he's talking about this from a cold lead generation perspective, which is great when I see it as as a warm, nurturing perspective, too. Because anytime you go handwritten, people know you went out of your way to go with it. Even if it's a machine do it. They don't know that but we do know the fake machines with the fake blue ink. And people know that that cats out of the bag now. So it's about it's no differently when you guys are on the show. And I tell you about video. No one listens to the content that comes out of the video, but they remember how you did the video. And this is the same exact concept, right? So you could get all kinds of different notes but only one of them are handwritten. So it's about sticking outbut more. So I like to personalization quite a lot, quite a bit.Makes a lot of sense. Now, people do save direct mail guys, I used to put my cartoon logo on my direct mail and the old people always save that, which is how we used to chase distressed properties. Back in the day, we used to chase development ops, and I put my little cartoon character at the top and everyone knows like, there's some suit different about this thing. I'm like, I know what the fuck it is. It's my cartoons. Everyone else has been professional. I'm sticking out with a cartoon character. And there's got to be that one thing that makes a difference. Sometimes it's the way you do things that people react to them, not what you do. All right? Personalization. This is no different than than being funny on video. Well, you're being authentic on direct mail. It's direct mail super effective. We have a whole suite of it in referral suite for that reason. But let's get into this. I liked the combo, but I want to unpack the direct mail first. So from a lead generation perspective, and when you're sending letters out to cold people you don't know, right? And if direct mail farming still works today, guys, yes, it takes a lot longer to use. But if you were to personalize your direct mail farming, my guess would be that you would increase your ROI quite a bit, because you're gonna get a lot more reaction to it. Is that basically what you're saying? Yeah, the handwritten notes? And how many do I have to send as a next question? Yeah, great question. So let me unpack that. So with respect to farming versus leaving, versus sphere nurture, so we do a lot of both. So agents all the time send over their sphere. And then we create a whole sphere nurture sequence. And we've even taught the handwriting robots, how to create beautiful, original line drawings. And so on the birthday, for example, I'm holding up a card right now a beautiful line drawing, we can create birthday gifts for folks in your sphere, we can create closing gifts, of course that are much more special than sending that candle or that bottle of champagne. Or the gift card. The gift card is the worst closing gift ever give you never give someone a gift that they could spend and forget about you give them a gift that they'll remember and put in their house every time they pass by it, they subliminally think of your name. Don't buy any more gift cards. Yeah, we automatically trigger on Line Draw original line drawings of the house that they just purchased. That's, that goes to them, for example. So we do a lot of sphere nurture. And we do a lot of geographic farming in terms of average notes per month, clients send roughly 300 notes a month, and they hit each household every other month. Now here's the key. Before we trigger a single note on behalf of clients, we laser target the leads. So we have a proprietary targeting database as well with 200 Plus filters. And so clients come in either just stunned because they come in and they just assume that they're all households are created equal, not at all for us, we take out a scalpel and get totally surgical with the lead generation. So they might say, You know what, I like this golf club course, but club that I only want properties on the course itself, owner age 50 plus equity level 30% Plus, want it so the COO was issued at least seven years ago. So we maximize the chances that that thing is going to be listed. And by the way, our platform is all around driving listings, of course, buyers result too. But everyone knows that he or she that lists persists. So this is all about listings. And then so we said it's kind of like three legs of the stool, you've got the targeting database. So we laser target the leads, and then you have the notes. And then you have the digital marketing follow up. And we've added a fourth leg, which is super cool. And so inside of the app that all of our clients get, you've got all that real time QR code alerts are in there. But also we've added something called Marketing growth engine, which is basically my 25 years of digital marketing background, the distilled reduction sauce of that. And what is it, it's a bunch of original content that is written specifically in the age of chat GPT because everybody can create anyone can create AI based content. These days, we've been using AI to create 10s of 1000s of articles across multiple websites for years now for two years, actually. And so we are able to create, let's say your real estate agent in San Diego, we populate your account with incredible articles with original photos and all you do is copy you click on the link we even include SEO attributes such as meta title, meta description, we even include answers on popular question and answer websites like Quora. So someone might be asking, What should I know before moving to San Diego? Well, you need to be the person to answer that. And so all you do is you go into our app, you copyIf you click on a link, it takes you directly to Quora, you click on respond, you paste and you post. It's as easy as that. And so and then we even include training. And this all comes with the product. And so we've got tons of training. For example, we did a whole objection handling masterclass with Chris Heller, who was, as many people know, the former CEO of Keller Williams, he was their number one agent worldwide. And he won the national objection handling contest. Well, nobody's ever captured content with Chris, at this level, there's drips and drabs of, you know, wonderful podcasts with people like you might, but no one's ever broken it down this way. And so we do that we have amazing content with top agents. And then I reveal all my hacks, anything you didn't know about skyrocketing growth on tick tock or SEO or email marketing, or how to drive more reviews, it's all in there. We also have a private Facebook group, and I do multiple webinars. So it's an integrated marketing platform. So let's get into the digital. You guys heard about the product, if you're interested in you can look them up after this. But I'm more interested in seeing how the digital ties in with the direct mail in this pace. And then I got a couple of other questions before that.So why doesthecompare it to, to me I would like to see like seller distress data in here. So we have a mutual friend named Dustin my business partner before we got on the show here. And you know, he's all about distressed data, right? That's what we do we create seller distressed leads to andI know these guys want to hear you said, Why would I send? I would go after like I look at this a seller lead gen 100% direct mail. There's a reason why investors still use direct mail because it works. The reason Realtors don't do is because it's expensive. But the reality is, is that people save these and people do save them in direct mail touch on the first instance is a great touch to break in the door of a distressed seller. Sowhy is that though?Yeah, well, it also depends on the piece like, it's gonna get open, if it has an envelope like ours with real handwriting and a real 62 cent first class postage stamp. So people, homeowners have antenna behind antenna, they pick up on when something feels spammy. And so even if it's a pre canceled stamp, or they can tell the handwriting is not quite right, or the envelopes too big, we've optimized everything, because I come from a world of digital marketing. So everything's an AV test. So we've opted, so if that distressed seller is receiving a bunch of mail, because of course, I mean, that distressed seller is known throughout the during direct mail world, and is going to get tons and tons deluge of mail, the one that's going to stand out is going to be the envelope, and then they're going to open. So that'll make it to the kitchen counter. But when you open it, it's got to be a fixed stock card, it's got to have a graphic on the front that they want to keep. And the mistake that a lot of direct mailers make is they don't make the piece a keepsake. And you have to be very thoughtful about the user experience. And so once that piece makes it from the physical mailbox into their kitchen counter, how do you optimize for the chances that they'll keep a display? Well, the experience has to be fixed doc note and then never put an image of yourself or a logo on the actual comma. What about a business card? A business card feat it can be good but it can feel salesy. Yeah, in our experience AB testing that it actually performs a little bit worse to put a business card for any type of insert. The Insert vibe is that this is mass produced. And so you want to add a logo, nobody wants a logo or a photo of a stranger on their kitchen counter on their home office desk or on their mantel or on their fridge. And so the name of the game is getting them to keep it because that distressed seller otherwise will chuck it in the trash and forget about you. So what we've done is we've created these beautiful graphics, we have these huge, incredible digital presses that print in high definition, these gorgeous graphics. That's what people keep and display and it feels less salesy. The vibe is that they went out and they bought the you know, they went to a little art store and they bought a little card and then went to a Starbucks and ordered a you know, a venti peppermint tea and wrote a bunch of notes. Then what you need to do, the mistake a lot of direct mailers make is they don't create a piece that is easy to display. And so it might just be a single card or whatnot. We do a bifold note and it's exactly the size where it invites you to keep and display it. The thing ends up on thethat you encounter, you end up being top of mind, no matter what. And so we've really that distressed seller and in the name of the game, of course, is working with someone that has a robust real time database of all those distressed sellers, you can target anything you can target pre foreclosures, foreclosures, or rental leads that are ready to cash out fizz bows, whatever you want, and our targeting database allows you to do that. So let me unpack that really quick for you guys. Theyour envelope is just like your subject line on an email is a good analogy. I guess. If you have real estate market update, I'm unsubscribing from your bullshit. If you have, you know, something like, Hey, your house lost value, I'm opening that up, like the subject line on an email is 40% of the battle on an email. So the subject line, the lettering and the envelope of your direct mail is exactly the same equivalent. Because he's right as like, what's happens is you get all the credit, the credit card companies are perfect example of this, I get offers every day, and I never even opened up the envelope I tear them off, because I know it's a credit card offer. So if your envelopes aren't getting open, people can't see the handwriting. But when you make it feel authentic, I'm always like, is this an invite someone getting married is Who's this from like someone saying thank you like, you're gonna get the attention, right. And you got to remember what direct mail guys, you get a 100% receivership rate that's unlike any other channel, you if you post on Facebook, you're only getting about a 15 18% reach organically. When you post out on emails, you only get a 13% open rate or organically traditionally on emails. But when you do direct mail, you get a 100% Unless you have the wrong address, which you'll know because it'll get returned to you. Sothis is your opportunity to get 100% in front of 100% of people you're trying to reach. And that's why you only get one impression like so you got to think of it from you're going on a first date, you're not going to show up in your pajamas, you're going to dress up right. So it's the exact same concept here, you got to get your foot in the door before you can sell your shit. And the first way you do that is subliminally my guess is what's happening here with these people who receive these mailers like, oh shit, this guy actually went went out of their way to do this for me. So let me take this a little bit more seriously, is that accurate? I absolutely. And let me just add to that if I could. So there can't be any bait and switch of any sort along the way it has to be, you have to deliver on the prompt just like a subject line or a thumbnail on a YouTube video, it has to deliver on that promise. So when they open it, you need to deliver something of value. And so you can a lot of our clients, what they do is create a landing page, a YouTube video, it could be often where they will talk about the market, they'll say thank you for scanning my note, my name is such and such. And I live in your neighborhood and I'm third generation Carolina in or whatever. And so it's like really personalizing it, making sure you add value. And then here's a little secret. I'm not actually about the handwritten note on the QR code on the QR code. What is the Have you seen any difference in response rate to the older generation like people 65? Plus, do they get QR codes? Do they understand how to use them and all that? Previous to COVID? No. But because of COVID Everyone got used to QR code and interesting. That'd be my friend. Everyone has everyone. Everyone has a smartphone. I mean, everyone has a smartphone no matter what generation now. And they just everyone knows how to open up a camera. So it works. It works really well. And here's a little secret is the handwritten note is awesome. It works great on its own. It performs that eight times we've done a lot of AV testing the handwritten note and the way we engineer it, in particular performance beat times better than printed direct mail. But to really get maximum ROI, you use the note as a Trojan horse. So now it's all about evoking reciprocity, right? Where if you've read books on persuasion, it's not the need for human to give back if they've received something is actually irrationally high. So by sending that note, you can sit really high in the saddle, as a real estate agent. And this is the secret is you can you've taken that audience and you've warmed it up now, which is a marketer's Holy Grail. And that's why I named the company audience. It's about taking a cold audience and warming up that audience. Once you have a warm audience, then when you send a cold email, for example, and we supply all the email addresses, not only the primary owners, but if there's a secondary owner we find that email address to then you follow up there's a 12% response rate, on average, not not open rate response rate on a cold email because we do a magic subject line which says Did you receiveIf my handwritten No, then we use AI to create a long email, it's personalized. And it even mentions their address in there, it mentions their neighbors addresses in the email. So that gets a crazy high response rate, then we give you the social handles. So you connect by social. So what what our platform does and what a lot of real estate agents tell us is, it opened the door for them to easily and automatically get good, really good at follow up in digital market. And the note with the door opener, in fact, there are agents that tell us that they were they really dislike door knocking a lot of agents just like door knocking. I don't I don'tblame them in the slightest. Once you send the note though, the door knocking is so much easier they answer. And then it's never about selling. It's about hey, I sent I've sent you a couple of handwritten notes, I fear I'm sending them to the wrong address just confirming that you receive them. So that works like a charm. And for so once you send your direct mail, you have a list and now you're targeting the same people on social are you doing this through the cell phone and email address custom audiences uploads, like on Facebook? And what kind of digital activities are we doing here? Yeah, so always be aware of any company that is supplying phone numbers to you at scale, because in this climate of privacy, they should not be doing that. And they could get you in a lot of trouble. If you then load those up into a dialer and go nuts on calling home cold homeowners. And it also depends on your state. Obviously certainly don't don't text a cold homeowner, you can get into big trouble that last year a cash buyer you have to be the principal in the transaction then you could solicit but what he's saying you could get in a lot of trouble realtors that are cold calling or whatnot, cold calling or tax, you cannot interact unless you're a direct principal, you cannot represent anyone unless you're direct principal. But if you're the cash buyer yourself, and you're legit, you could cold call them. But that's a you can't do it regularly. So this is a good way around that. But further to your question, Mike about creating custom audiences in Facebook, for example. So what we do then, is we I do these webinars, and we have this training videos that teach you exactly how to eat all the meat of the marketing bones in a very easy way requires very little effort. So we give you all the emails I was mentioning of the primary and secondary owners, you take those. And for example, we have integrations with folks like follow up boss and others that you can literally export them directly out of our app. And then you can use those to create custom audiences inside of Facebook. And then all of a sudden, we train you on how to even go to sites like upwork.com and hire someone to create your Facebook ads and go to Facebook ad library and kind of take a look at your competitors. Very easy stuff. What's the ad is a video. It's like the retargeting ad like I would I would probably put up picking, like I put my face on it 100% For sure, for sure. So it's an introduction video, and then they're like, it should be the same video that you just did for the landing page off of the QR code off of your notes. So it's all consistent. So now look what's happening, the homeowners that were ice cold before audience, they're getting your notes consistently. And you want to make sure you send a note every two months. And you want to be very, very consistent in that you stop. I mean, we know that out of the 1000 or so households that we're hitting with audience notes that there will be people who list we don't know who's going to list. So therefore you have to stay top of mind consistently. And the worst feeling for an agent is when someone from their database lists with one of their top competitors. I mean, it's the silliest so with audience, you need to be consistent. And that consistency allows you to then follow up, then you take all those email addresses and guess what, import them directly into your newsletter marketing platform. So if you use MailChimp or your brokerage platform or Active Campaign or Constant Contact or whatever, upload them and then there's starting to get your email newsletters, it's all about consistency and familiarity, which breed trust. So it's never about just one thing. It's never about just the note or the email marketing or the Facebook. It's everything we all know it takes multiple multiple touches. Jay, kinder, you know, I was chatting with him. He's incredible. And I asked him, I said, Scott, what do you do so well, Jamie's one of the top agents in the country raising raising coach and everything else. And he said, Well, I like to think of myself as the Incredible Hulk stomping around in a puddle. I said, Okay, great, great image. What does that mean? And he said, people cannot miss me because I'm everywhere. I'm on bus benches. I'm an email. I send your handwritten notes. I do everything and so that's that's kind of the whole point with this integrated marketingplatform here at audience sounding familiar, folks, we chat about this every week on the show you there is no one thing as a one channelperson anymore. You got to be mom omnipresent. You got to be everywhere. And people, it's a busy world. You know, at the end of the day, this is people given to the one that gives you the most and for real estate, over 80% of people will close with the first person they meet with, you increase your chances of that happening, the more they see you, right. And the reason why this, like what he's seen here is like just direct mail farming, it still works today. It's been around since the dinosaurs roamed the earth. But generally, if you're just taking regular postcard campaign, year one, you'd hit one to three listings, your two is three to five, year three is five to seven. That's a traditional farming campaign, but it's if you take a break at all during those 36 months, you just screwed up the whole campaign. Okay? You cannot. It's almost like, like, you can't leave in the middle of a dinner on a first date. That's the same fucking concept, right? You can't just submit Oh, I gotta go art by Alright, sorry, you don't get a second date. There's, there's no difference with this. Like, if you don't plan on being consistent in anything, it's not going to work. And I would even put this more in the marketing versus advertising category. This is all attraction based like something like this, you could see the ROI is going to come but you don't know when it's going to come. Right but when I'm buying Zillow leads realtor.com Either make money or I don't make money in that term, or in that timeframe of that I have that lead account. So this is definitely the long game. You have to be doing it consistently all the time. I love the digital marketing approach on top of this is how we're doing with all of our brands. We create organic content and we overlay that Reatta contact with our ads and then that's what's working the best real it's like we give value in the people who consume our content. Another way to look at content marketing I like to explain it as the Think of the play action in football for all you dudes out there. We're watch the Super Bowl this weekend right? You hand off you hand off you hand off only to set up to pass right otherwise the play action is not even a thing is it well it's so differently in here you add value you got direct mail every two months direct mail direct mail oh there isn't social. Oh, he's gonna email Oh shit. Fuck this motherfuckers everywhere. Where the flux is guy coming from he must be the best. That's positioning and authority with content that's how powerful that can be. And even if you do this, and you've never sold a house before the people on the receiving end of this content think you're fucking Rockstar.Yeah, that's the difference is like with brand authority, personalization content putting yourself out there. I can make you think I'm a chef. If I want seven days seven videos, watch them You think I'm a chef. That's how powerful branding and positioning can be guys. I love the omnipresent makes sense. makes common sense to me and unfortunately, we've lost a lot of that in the real estate industry.Dude, this is relationship building 101 Is this I'm looking at this as the dating process. I think people understand this when when I walked through the analogy is that note is my like, that's my swipe right? If that's even how that works, right? Oh, fuck. Who is this person? Yeah. Oh, then the emails are my, my my Tapper. Like, I don't know, I don't know how the DD analogies work or the platforms but it's like that's the same concept guys. The problem everybody has is that we're like hey, do you want to go buy and sell your house that's usually how an agent circle prospects they go hey, I'm a real estate agent with a big block Realty and what we're gonna be doing or sorry Hey, I'm a real estate big block Realty and I really like your house. I have a buyer. No you don't you're lying out of your ass who may be interested in buying your house. That should is tired guys. It's so old school.I don't know why the Guru's still teach it but I'm pretty sure it's it's all they know. Things have changed. And you do have to earn business today. And people have options. Fortunately, most of them think real estate's a commodity business. And for the most part, it is the one who stands out as the one who wins in whichever way that is direct mail video. However, maybe, but whatever it is, you gotta be consistent. Otherwise, it doesn't work. Yeah, and it works especially well in this market. So people ask us, Well, you know, how is the current climate of rising interest rates andslowing real estate market and in many areas, how's that affected us? And we say well actually have the opposite effect, because it's gotten rid of a lot of the riffraff so there's a lot of the agents that were just dabbling, or just toe dippers. They've pulled back on their marketingagents, we work with that plot a plot 180 degree role when everyone else is pulling back, like you know, eight 910. They just stomp on the accelerator harder. You take market share, in a reckless way. They invest on they don't they're careful about expenses, but audience is not an expense. It's an investment. And so it's about digging your well before you're thirsty. And then what happens just like an O H just look at these market cycles.is once you the ones that invested and applied the 180 degree rule, they come out way stronger than it already. I just did this earlier today on a training, it happened twice in the last two years. It happened right after COVID Most of the agents went MIA. And that's why so many social media celebrities were born. they've doubled down on marketing. I called it at the time, I said, Look, whoever's gonna be super loud here is gonna fucking be a millionaire. It happened. And then it happened again, when the rates change. Last April, everyone went, everyone stopped. Like I tell you guys, I just said, I just had this like I have, we lost half of our video clients. And both of those situations. And the ones that we kept fucking dominated. The ones that dropped honestly, like, a lot of them are still struggling. We had a transaction coordinator, tied to one of my trainings today. I've known her for a couple years, but um, I bring her on and I asked her a question. She goes, Hey, Mike, oh, my God. She's associate he's a transaction coordinator. So she gets business from real estate agents. And she had some life situations happen husband, and she like that. She went quiet for three months. All right, no one's seen her for three months, and all sudden, she just started creating again. And when she wouldn't cry it she gets up today. And she goes, Hey, Mike. Yeah, business just got crushed in the last three months. But it wasn't until I started getting back doing videos consistently doing this again. And now I just picked up six more agents. When you're out of sight out of mind, you cannot afford to not you cannot afford to run a business and be out of sight. And in this recessionary environment, we'll see what happens if it comes back or not. This is where you got to take market share, man. Yes, it sucks. It's scary. But dude, he just told you the exact same thing I've been telling you for last eight months on this show. And we've never even met before. And I'm telling you case, study after case study after case study after case study after case study. When shit goes bad, you double down? Not disappear. Yeah, yeah, we think exactly the same. And, yeah, I mean, there's, here's what happens when you pause, like you mentioned with that with that woman, when you pause your marketing, and you just decide, okay, I'm gonna see what happens. Let's see where the chips fall based on all this marketing I've done today, you actually send the opposite signal. So you send a signal that either you're not interested to sellers, for example, you send a signal that you're not interested in their neighborhood, you're not interested in their business, or worse that you've gotten out of the business altogether. Like you say, you're out of sight out of mind, you're now a tree falling in the forest that no one ever hears. And in fact, it's even worse, because guess what happens? You've pumped up the bicycle tire, so another agent can take a ride. So now another agent can come in there with similar marketing and people get homeowners get confused. Was it that agent? Was it the other agent? I don't know? And then on to say, was it the guy wearing the tie? Or was it the guy wearing the tie? I don't know which one it was, I gotta go with the guy wearing the tie. Air. Here's how a lot of you are going to be like, hey, what if I'm being annoying? I don't want I don't want to annoy people listen to if you believe you're the right person for the job, it becomes your obligation to let the world know for it anything less. You're a shady dude.If you're not the right person for the job, and you're in the wrong fucking business, go get a new job. Like that's what it comes down to. So when people tell us that same thing, like with video, I'm being annoying. No, what's annoying is when those people start cheating on you with another real estate agent. And it's not their fault that they forgot you're in real estate. It's your fault. You didn't remind them. And it's a big difference, like consistency. And marketing is the only thing that works. It always works over time. Yeah, you can make tweaks and all that. But look at the concept that he's talking about. Look at the concept. I talked about every frickin week on the show. And it's the same thing guys. Like, don't overthink, this isn't rocket science. People give in to the one they see the most whether that's direct mail, video, email, whatever it is the person who's all out there billboards and all that. There's a reason why those people are always the top agents in those markets like you don't, they don't it's not an accident. You're like, oh, is video gonna work for me? Well, have you ever seen an hour work for anyone? I don't know anyone who had video that consistently that isn't like successful. I don't know anyone's doing direct mail consistently that isn't successful. I don't know anyone that's working out consistently that isn't in shape.Like, dude, don't overthink this stuff. Guys. You're running a damn business. You're not a salesperson chasing a check. Your broker ain't gonna make you money, you're gonna make money. Your broker is just going to collect extra money that you make on them. Worst thing you could do firms make more money. No one's gonna save you in this business. You have to save yourself and your face, whether you like it or not. You're that's the brand, your body, your shirt, whatever the hell it is. And if that's not front center, and being the center of all conversation, you're missing the point. That's a great point. A quick anecdote related to what you just said. So there's an agent named David citizens here in Miami in South Florida. He's one of the top agents nationwide. You can look him up. I think he's ranked number 96. Now nationwide, he did $600 million in volume last year. He would be forgiven for notdoor knocking and for not you hustling to an extreme. Well, a couple days ago, I was on the phone with him. And I've heard him outside. He's a very, very happy audience Klein. In fact, he's even an audience investor. And I said, Dude, what are you doing? Are you going for a walk? And he said, No, I'm actually going door to door and hand delivering brownies with a beautiful ribbon, and my wife tied on it with the Davidsons logo on it. I said the only two people that you know, he goes, No, no cold homeowners. So here's a guy, you can calculate his GCI and get a sense for how much money he made last year talk about somebody not resting on his laurels. So exactly what Mike said about consistent, persistent, that wins the day. Yep. Just podcast, you guys. We got 1.5 million downloads. I never advertised it. I never marketed it. You guys come here. We're doing 30 35,000 downloads a month. Thank you guys, please keep sharing it out. But it's because I was consistent. Right? So we're practicing what we preach here, you guys, you have to just focus on one thing, and no, it's not going to happen overnight. No, you're not going to get rich in six months. But what you will do is you start to build a stream of consistency. And when the consistency occurs, the peaks and valleys goes away. And all of a sudden, this stressful business that you once dreamed of becomes fun again, don't overthink it, I just want you to give him some closing thoughts on where they can find you. And we'll get this wrap.Yeah,I mean, just one thing that I'd like to leave on is this sort of zooming out a little bit, and to make sure that you never, ever build your business on rented land. And let me at this is echoing a lot of what Mike talks about in his podcast. But a lot of agents will just develop out the page on their brokers website without creating their own website with original content, much less a podcast like Mike has done, you want to make sure that you are building a business that is completely independent of your brokerage. And by the way, your brokers love this because Keller, whomever, they love ambitious agents who are creating hundreds of articles, and podcasting, and you know, just all over the place speaking at events, and networking, and so forth. But also, this allows you to have a lot more autonomy and freedom, longer term. And if you are making this career, make sure you don't build your business on rented land. Same thing in digital marketing, right? digital marketers know that you cannot build your business around the big Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook, use those platforms, absolutely play to their strengths. But build your own website, build your own content, testimonials, build all your wonderful reviews across Google My Business, learn digital marketing, develop a toolkit, you know, all the misfires I've ever had in my career, because I didn't have the right skills and tools to go out. And that's why inside of audience, you get a ton of training. So in terms of like where you can go to learn more, and it's a low pressure sale, you go to audience dot CEO, you book a demo. And the way that we approach things is we present our solution, we deliver a bunch of value, we get you some ebooks that you can take as a gameplan for doing the notes on your own if you need to, or doing digital marketing on your own. And if there's a fit, we move forward. We don't even do contracts because it works so well. And yeah, audience.co Well, man, appreciate it cool product. And thank you folks for listening to another one of our episodes. Remember what he said, you can't ever rely on a business or a cat. Don't ever put 100% of your business on a lead source you don't control. I've seen countless teams get their ass kicked. Once the market shifts, it just happened again. But whether you're relying on Zillow realtor.com, you'd be surprised at how many of these top performing teams don't really have a profit margin. They're losing or breaking even every single month. And it's not because it's just ego guys like so. If you don't have something you control, you're always at the risk of the next shift. Because what'll happen is that the second that lead source changes, so do the interactions with it. So when the market changed, Zillow leads weren't performing what they were before. In this episode, Eric speaks with Robert C. Davidson, Jr; successful entrepreneur, art collector and philanthropist. He and Eric discuss his experience as a young boy; growing up in the Jim Crow era of the 1950s in Memphis, Tennessee and how his parents were both entrepreneurs and great inspirations to him: His mother opened a restaurant for black patrons in 1944 after seeing that African American soldiers had nowhere to eat in public. His father opened the first and only black-owned bank, Tri State Bank. They discuss his education and entrepreneurial journey and how, after investing thirty years in business, he turned his attention to art and philanthropy. Mr. Davidson talks about his and his wife's mission in building their art collection; one which Eric deems as one of the greatest African American art collections in the country! Eric and Mr. Davidson delve into the collection; and take us on a journey where they discuss works by Palmer Hayden, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, Betye Saar, Joshua Johnson, Elizabeth Catlett and Meta Warrick Fuller while offering valuable insight and expertise on purchasing art and building a collection. For more visit: www.ericsperspective.comGuest Bio: Robert C. TranscriptAaron Hixson: Hey Northridge, welcome to A Little Better, where our goal is to know God better and to do better, so that we can be a little better. Well hey, Northridge family, welcome back to A Little Better. Happy Easter. We are glad that you're with us. Today is the day after Easter. I don't know if that has a name, but I'm gonna still call it Easter. I'm the kinda guy who says "Merry Christmas" well after Christmas is over, so, I guess I'm just that guy. Drew Karschner: Do you really say “Merry Christmas” after Christmas is over? Or before it has happened? Aaron: Yes. Both, both. I mean, it's just like the Christmas season. It's a generic timeframe. Drew: No, the Christmas season ends after Christmas. It just makes sense that way. You got 25 days that lead to Christmas. You say “Merry Christmas” all the time. But once Christmas is over, you're not walking around like "Merry Christmas!" December 26th. That's weird, bro. That's weird. Aaron: I still do. I don't know. Okay. Well, anyway, happy Easter. [Both laughing]So, tell me about your Easter, Drew. How did it go down in the Karschner household? Drew: Well, we had a beautiful day with my mom and my family and my brother and sister. We watched the services. And we had turkey, so we baked a turkey, and we had some good food, great celebration. We hid some eggs, and when I say "we hid some eggs," I mean I threw them in the most obvious places for a five, a three, and a two-year old to get them. So we had a little Easter egg hunt with candy and little pennies in there, and the kids loved it. It was great. Yours? Aaron: Awesome. It was good, it was good. How many services did you guys watch? I feel like you're the kind of guy that would watch -- you're always watching other churches and seeing what they're doing. So did you check out other churches or just Northridge or what did that look like? Drew: I watched every Northridge service and I watched other church services as well. It's amazing. All day long my computer was full of services, so. Aaron: Yeah, you're like -- you get so many bonus points for how many Easter services you watched. I was present for all three of ours as well, 9, 10:30, and 1. I guess -- wait, do we have a Monday? Drew: We have one tonight at 7. Yes. Aaron: Yeah, we have one tonight at 7, that's right. So I guess I haven't been present for all of them yet. I've been present for all of the ones that have happened. But actually we're switching around service times. Have we already talked about that? Why don't you tell us what's coming this week for service times? Drew: Yeah, we're just moving -- so, Monday night at 7, it's been a great little experiment, and so we're going to shift it to Saturday night at 7. So, we're gonna take that Monday service. The only thing that's changing with our weekend services is we're taking the Monday night at 7, and we're moving it to Saturday night at 7. One reason why, Monday night was just a harder night for people to engage. I think after Sunday, they kinda move on to the next week, and so, a lot of churches I have worked for have had a Saturday night service, so we're gonna try this out, see if it works, and yeah. Praying God does cool things with it. Aaron: All right, so it's moving, not adding. We're just moving. There won't be a Monday starting next week. Drew: Exactly right, yep. We are moving the Monday night to Saturday night. Aaron: Sounds good. Yeah, I definitely have never heard of a church with a Monday night service. I do think it was a cool experiment, but I can't recall ever seeing that before. Saturday does make some sense. And we have the ability to do it, since we're having to pre-record right now, so that's cool. But hey, the big thing about Easter, obviously Jesus is alive, that's amazing. He is risen. He is risen indeed. Did you guys grow up saying that in church, "he is risen"? Drew: I mean, I think everybody says that. Even now. Aaron: No, I mean, it was like a call and response. It was like a real live thing every easter, you'd say "he is risen" and the church would say like "he is risen indeed." Did you guys -- was it just me? Maybe it was just me. Drew: No comment. [Both laughing.] Aaron: Anyway. So, we're excited. Jesus is alive. Why don't you tell us a little bit about the response from Sunday? What are we hearing from our people? And even people placing their faith in Christ. Did you have any of your pi2 people show up? Talk to me about that. Drew: Yeah, so Sunday was an amazing celebration. So one thing if you watched on our live.northridge platform, you saw a couple unique things that we've been adding. One of those is you could see when I gave the gospel and people had a chance to respond, you could see people say "raise a hand if you prayed that prayer." Aaron: Yeah, that was a cool thing. Drew: Yeah, it was really cool. Our team worked hard on that. Over our three services, we saw 27 people say yes to Jesus Christ. Aaron: Wow. Drew: Plus, three more that came in from a different avenue in that way. And so 30 people said yes to Jesus Christ. If you think about that, over four weeks, that is 61 people. 61. Aaron: Amazing, amazing. Drew: I mean, how amazing is God? And you know, we're griping and moaning over this COVID-19, but God is totally using it to draw people to himself. I know we talked about it, but I hope that never gets old. 61 eternities have been changed because of this, and whew! Let's go! I'm ready for more, I'm ready. Aaron: I know. That is very exciting. And I just love that we were able to capitalize on this season. You know, not every series and not every timeframe would be perfect for that kind of a shift where we're offering opportunities every single week, but this was just like the perfect moment and God utilized it, so I'm really excited about that. That's a very high number. Of course the number is reflective of stories and people that know and people that we’re following up with. They're not just nameless numbers. These are stories we care about and that we're checking with. So, that's very exciting. Drew: Yeah, and kudos to the people of our church for inviting. I got a couple messages from people who texted me and said, "Hey Drew, my friend texted me and said they said yes to Jesus." And that, just stirs a fire in people's hearts. My contractor. We've been adjusting some things in my basement for my mom to move in, and my contractor texted me this morning, so today, I think it was around 9:30. He says "Hey, we tuned in and it was awesome. Thanks for that." I got a message from my high school sixth grade teacher, who said, "Hey, I haven't felt that much hope in a long time. Thank you so much." Aaron: Oh my goodness. Wow. Drew: I mean, again, cool stories of God just working. He's fulfilling our mission. More and better, baby, more and better. People are growing closer to God and people are meeting Jesus for the first time. So, let's go. Aaron: Beautiful. And Drew, dude, I love that you're living pi2. I mean, it would be easy in your position, I think maybe mine too. We've talked about pi2 endlessly, especially back in the Paul series. It's easy at times to feel like that's outside of our purview because we're, you know, we work with a bunch of Christians and stuff, but I love that you've got names of people that you're thinking about. I love it. I've sent out some invitations, and got some positive responses. Some people ghosted on me, but, you know, that's gonna happen. And so, anyway, we'll see what comes from that. I loved getting texts during that morning. Like “Hey, my friend from wherever is tuning in, please be praying.” You know, people just in the moment being like, “I'm so excited they came!” I love that feeling for people, and just that they're sharing and spreading and praying, and we're all kinda like waiting with bated breath for what God's gonna do. And yeah. It's an especially expectant time because of the sadness and the distress and the fear that people are feeling, but then also of course with the biggest Sunday of the year in terms of people being interested in church. Drew: Yeah. Aaron: Yeah, so let's jump in and talk about the resurrection a little bit. Let's talk about this sermon from Sunday. I have some random thoughts that I might end up sharing that just were from my own devotional time on Sunday morning before church. But that's a whole 'nother thing that I'm looking at my notes here. We'll see if that comes up. But for now, you talked about how the resurrection should impact our daily life, and I just kinda thought, what does that mean? What would it mean for the resurrection to, as a believer, impact my daily life? How does the fact that Jesus is alive change what I'm doing day to day? Drew: I mean, if you truly believe in what Jesus accomplished, I don't understand how it cannot change everything. I mean, it should change your motives for getting out of bed. It should change the way you think about life and eternity. It should change the way you choose to live and act towards the people you love and the people you don't love. I mean, every fiber of who you are should be changed by the resurrection. Now, that doesn't happen in an instant. You know, it happens over a life of living in the perspective of the resurrection and how the resurrection gives you victory over your sin. And so, I think the major way that the resurrection has changed my life is the battle between my flesh and the Spirit. Living in light of the resurrection, man, my flesh wants to do things that I know I shouldn't do, and so the battle that wages within me, it helps me overcome the sin that I was enslaved to but now have freedom over. And so my daily choices of how to respond to my wife when she annoys me or how to have patience --Aaron: Wait, that's -- I'm gonna have to stop you there. That doesn't happen. Drew: It's actually usually in reverse, probably for my wife and me annoying her, but every once in a while --Aaron: Good clarification. Drew: But I think of patience with my kids, when we're locked in a house all the time together. I think of just the random emails that you get of frustration of people. Just every area of your life, the resurrection can impact. From my desire to want people to experience what I've experienced, you know. When you truly see the amazement of the resurrection and how it can change your life, it should create in you a desire for people to experience that as well. To love your neighbor, to tell your neighbor about Jesus. When I look at my life and I think about the resurrection, that Jesus is alive, what it really does is it makes me alive. It gives me life. And out of that new life, it changes everything I do. Aaron: That's great. I was thinking even to -- I don't know -- at the kind of really granular level, or really practical level, the fact that Jesus is alive, the reason you're saying it should impact everything is you're walking through the implications almost in an unstated way. You're like, if Jesus is alive, that means . . . and there's like five or six boxes that you're checking as a result of that truth, but like, why would a person 2000 years ago change my life? It's because what that resurrection means, as you said. That he's conquered sin. That resurrection means every claim he's ever made is true. That means that, if we have victory over death, even now in the midst of COVID, I don't have to be terrified of anything. I don't have to be terrified of even getting COVID and dying. I don't have to be afraid of people that I love having this disease and dying. I don't have to be afraid of economic ruin, or anything, global conspiracy that's making this whole thing up. Literally name your fear or whatever. None of it stands a chance against the fact that the worst thing that can happen to you is you lose everything and you die, and none of that can be -- the resurrection is more powerful than any of that. Drew: Right, and you think about this series. We've talked about, okay, you go back to Jesus' baptism, right? We talked about that giving him his identity. We talked about the temptation. It gave him his credibility. I think the resurrection gave Jesus -- it validated him as the son of god. It just took every claim Jesus had made in his life, as crazy as they were, and they said, check that box off, because that was true. You know, I think of even when he was crucified, the soldier, after he died, the veil was torn, the earthquake happened, the soldier says, "truly this must have been the son of god." It's like yep, checked that box. This was God's son. He did exactly what he said he was going to. And out of that, out of his resurrection, whew. The implications of that are endless in someone's life. Aaron: Yeah, and I don't have to -- if my spouse annoys me or if life isn't what I was expecting or if I never get married or if whatever, none of those things, as disappointing, frustrating, and hard as all of those things are, they're not ultimate. We have an ultimate truth in the form of Jesus' resurrection that overcomes everything. And so, it's kind of one of those "if all else fails" things, like, but it's not just an all else fails, break the glass in case of emergency, like, if your house is on fire, "oh no!" Quick, grab this last ditch effort. It's like, this is so important, so ultimate, that it actually can be pervasive in every detail of your everyday life. It's not just helpful in the biggest things. If you allow it to be, it's life-changing in the smallest of things. Drew: Exactly. And we're not saying that there are times in life where -- you know, life is hard and difficult. Right now, people are dealing with some really difficult things. And we're not saying, hey, walk around like "Oh, I got COVID-19, but don't worry, Jesus is alive." Like, yeah. He is alive. But that doesn't take away from the things in life that are hard and difficult. What the resurrection does in the midst of COVID-19, or in the midst of my dad dying or in the midst of anything that happens in life, the fact that Jesus is alive can change my perspective on any situation I go through. Aaron: I love it. In the midst of the story that we talked about on Sunday, there was obviously two guys, they're walking away from Jesus, and from faith. It's just insane to me. I was reading my Bible on Sunday morning before church in light of what I knew was coming in your content. It's just so remarkable to me how no one was expecting him to come back to life. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20, and so we know how this whole story ends, but these two guys, it's not like they were walking away because they hadn't heard. They had already heard that the women had come, they had gone to the disciples, it had spread enough through the disciples. These guys had already heard. There are already claims of a resurrection. They're like, “Yeah, but we didn't see him, so...” They're just walking away. And here's what I was struck with as I was reading my bible. After Jesus dies, Joseph of Arimathea comes. He goes to Pilate. He gets Jesus' body. He puts him in a new cut cave, puts the stone over the entrance. So immediately Jesus is buried. First of all, that's fine. It's to be expected. But it does indicate to me at least on some level -- they didn't want him laying out on the ground rotating, but I'm wondering like, why are you doing this? If you genuinely expect him to come back to life, it might be a little weird, but like, I don't know. Put him in your backyard on a patio chair or something. Like, he's coming back. Just give him a minute. You want to be there when it happens. But they put him in a tomb. Okay, that's fine. But then the religious leaders -- this is what blew my mind -- immediately they go to Pilate and say, “Hey, this guy claimed to say he was gonna be resurrected.” That's interesting to me. They knew that. Second of all, they said he's gonna be resurrected on the third day. That's what he claimed. So they had comprehended and, at least to some degree, believed it was going to happen. At least they expected that his disciples would be expecting it and they would try to fake it. So they're like, “This dude's gonna try to pull off that he came back to life. Can we just put a guard and seal the tomb?” And Pilate's like, “Yeah, that's fine. Do whatever you wanna do to seal the thing.” So they put two guards. And they're standing there. And then the women go on the first day of the week, and they're bringing -- again, this blows my mind -- they're not bringing party hats and kazoos, waiting for the third day to happen, they're bringing burial spices because they expect him to die and rot, and they don't want him to smell. It's like, the only people who took Jesus' words seriously about coming back to life were the Pharisees. All the disciples were like, "Aw man, he's dead. And now he's gonna be dead forever." And the more I was reading that, I was so confused. And these disciples, Cleopas and whatever his friend is, we don’t know the name, they're walking away too! I'm like, what is happening? Why did no one comprehend it? And I would cut them some slack if it weren't for that the religious leaders did! Sorry. I just went on a random rant. I told you I had stuff from my devos. But I've never put it together before that the Pharisees were legit like, “Yeah, he definitely thinks he's coming back and it's gonna be on the third day, so let's make sure that doesn't happen.” And the disciples are like, “Well, I don't know what's gonna happen.” Drew: I think the Pharisees were worried that the disciples were gonna come and steal the body. I don't think they actually believed that Jesus was actually gonna be alive. I think they thought, okay, they're going to try to do some trickery to spread this lie. But, think about it. It doesn't surprise me. Can you imagine if someone came into our world and made claims that Jesus did? I think this is a really good question. How many of us would have recognized Jesus if he walked on the face of our earth right now? What's crazy is, the people who claimed to know the most about God were actually the people who killed God. The Pharisees were the ones who walked him through court. They're literally in a circle, looking at God, and they don't know him. Aaron: I guess the thing that's blowing my mind about it is they knew enough, they had understood Jesus' teaching about the resurrection thoroughly enough that they were taking active steps to prevent him from being able to fake it. Like you said, they weren't expecting it to actually happen, but they're like, “Let's just post a guard to make sure these guys don't try to fake it.” I guess I'm thinking, the disciples, what would have been cool is, even if they weren't sure I'm telling myself -- and I'm being way too generous to myself -- but I'm telling myself, I think I would have gone, "Okay, he said he was gonna come back to life, he said it was gonna be on the third day, it's Sunday, can we just go chill? Let's just go sit there and let's just see what happens." You know what I mean? "I'm not actually expecting it, I don't really want to get my hopes up, but let's just go." Now, at the same time, I recognize it was dangerous for them and blah blah blah, and I'm being way too kind to myself, but it just never clicked to me that the religious leaders were like, "Yep, this is probably gonna at least get faked, so let's work against it," and the disciples were not taking any actions. Drew: But that's exactly what these two guys did, Aaron. They didn't leave until Sunday. They waited around, I don't know if they waited around because they thought at some level Jesus was going to come back --Aaron: That's true, that's a good point. Drew: But they obviously didn't believe it that strongly, because they heard the rumors that he did come back and still left! Aaron: They're like, “Yeah, I know.” Drew: That's pretty pathetic if you really think about it. Okay. “Jesus is dead. Okay. He's gonna rise again. Oh, he did? Nah, let's go.” Aaron: I know. So bold. They're just like, yeah, probably not. Let's at least go find out. Normally I'm not a disciples basher because I recognize I've got my issues. I would not have handled this better than Peter or whatever, but some aspects of the resurrection are like, guys, why not just stick around a couple more days and just see if you can at least find out who stole his body or something. Then you'll be on the inside. Don't just peace out. Then I love that Jesus walks with them the whole time, explains the Old Testament scriptures, gets to the very end, and they realize it's Jesus. I love what you said in the video where you're like, at first they probably were really embarrassed or whatever. I loved that point because I would have just been like, "Oh no. We look so dumb.” Drew: What do you say to Jesus? I mean, like -- Aaron: Thankfully he disappeared. Drew: I was just gonna say, I betcha they were so glad he disappeared. Because do you know how embarrassing and how shameful? I mean, in all seriousness, it's funny, because we're not them, but sometimes we are, aren't we? How many times do we doubt God? Like even right now. You think of COVID-19 and all that we're going through. We say things like this all the time as Christians. “Hey, but God's got this, he could take this away in a second.” But do we really believe he can? Aaron: I know if he did, and he were standing here, I would be like, “Well, I gotta say I didn't see that coming.” Like, I intellectually believe it, but I'm fairly certain I don't actually believe it. Drew: And think about how, I mean, it's one thing to take a disease away. To raise yourself from the dead. Again, we've heard this story so many times that what we say and what we claim feels so normal because we get the repetition of Easter, the repetition, but like to hear it for the first time, to believe someone's actually going to do it, it's hard to put ourselves in their shoes, because we know the story. We've heard it over and over again. This was so fresh and so crazy in their culture and their day that, if I'm being real, I probably would have been the guy that would've been like, "Jesus, I love you. But you're crazy. You're crazy, dude." Aaron: Yeah. Obviously my life indicates that I'm no better than these people when it comes down to the details, but it just does sound -- I love what you said on Sunday too, about how it's just another -- I actually can't remember exactly how you said it. It's just another thing with more traditions that's lost its meaning or something like that. You kinda compared Easter to Christmas. I heard it three times. I should be able to quote it, but I can't. But I love that because I do think that that's true, where it's so common. They're like ah, Jesus rose from the dead. But it actually is a crazy sounding thing. Cause it is a crazy thing. And I've even found -- I don't know if this is true for you, Drew -- but like, occasionally encountering other religions and studying them a little bit and finding out what they claim, all of their claims sound so audacious, like what? Like "Mohammed is capable of what?" or you know, whatever. Like that's just ridiculous. But then I go, “Oh no, wait.” That's of course exactly how all the claims I make sound about our God. I just have grown up with them and so it's very kinda, "Oh yeah, Jesus came back to life and that's what we celebrate." So, that brings us to how we lost the amazement of Easter. And I think that's so relevant for all of us to think through whether or not this has just become one more Sunday where we dress up, or where we have a nice lunch. Have we lost the amazement? When do you feel like you've been most amazed, and when were low times for you in terms of amazement of what Jesus did? Drew: Well, I think one thing that's been really helpful for me in recapturing the amazement has been my kids. You know, telling my children, like Joelle, who is really on the cusp of fully understanding the gospel and believing in it. I think seeing it through her eyes is so refreshing. It takes me back to when I was a new believer. Just explaining to her what Jesus did and that he rose again from the dead, the amazement in her eyes is the amazement that I want, hearing the story like as the first time. If you've got kids, I encourage you, share the stories with your kids and watch their reactions. Listen to their questions. I think this is why Jesus says to have childlike faith, where you can believe in something and you can submit to something even if you don't fully understand it. And kids, they believe things greater than we do, because they don't have, you know, the logic of life just stripping away from the faith that you have. Aaron: That jadedness that develops. Drew: Yes, and I see the lack of jadedness in my daughter and in my son when I tell them the stories. Joelle, just looking and watching her listen to the story and watching her eyes and her being in awe that God could do that, I'm like, "God, give me that again." You know, like just give that back to me. It has really helped me recapture. I think I'm in a season now too where I'm emotional cause you know, my dad's dead. I just think God is refreshing and giving me a new sense of amazement for life. I mean, my mom said while we were watching services, she was like, "I wonder what Easter's like in heaven." Aaron: Ah, yo. Drew: I wanted to cry. But I also wanted to rejoice. Aaron: I'm trying not to right now. Drew: Because like, man. Dad is literally with the risen Savior. It was a hard Easter for our family, but it was also helpful in recapturing how amazing Easter is, and to know Dad is with Jesus. Again, what are Easter services like in heaven? Come on, you wanna talk about a party, let's go. Jesus is alive! Aaron: I bet they have Monday night services. Drew: I betcha they get a little charismatic in heaven. Aaron: [Laughing.] Oh man, I had so many other things I was thinking about saying, but I'm fighting back tears right now, so I think we should end on that. In fact, I want to use that as a segue to talk about what's coming next. I'd love for you to just give us a little bit of even just excitement about what's coming in our next series, and I think obviously it's got some ties to what we were just talking about, so what's next? Drew: Yeah, so one, I'm saddened to see Unfiltered Jesus go away. What an amazing series. Aaron: Oh man, me too. Drew: And you know, again, I wanna just say thank you to the Davidsons, Drew and Meg. They're volunteers in our church that have put so much blood, sweat, and tears into this series. They got regular jobs, but they're making and creating these videos. God did some amazing things through these videos, and so, Drew and Meg, thank you for --Aaron: I don't think he's done using them. Drew: He's not. He's not. And thank you so much for your time and energy. You guys are amazing. I also am excited for our new series. It's gonna be different, but it's called A Life that Matters. And really, I'm gonna be just kinda teaching you what God's been teaching me in this series, through, you know, my dad's death, through COVID-19, what really makes a life that matters? I think death and crisis brings a level of focus to our lives, where we really understand what is important and what's not important. And really that's what this series is all about, getting us to get back to the place in life where we're not distracted, where we're zooming in on what truly lasts for all of eternity. And so, it's gonna be a fun, and challenging series, but I think it's what we all need right now in this season. Aaron: I love it. Crisis brings clarity, and I'm looking forward to the clarity you can bring us starting this Sunday. It's gonna be a great series. Thanks for jumping in and joining us again, and everybody thanks for listening. We've got some cool things coming for the podcast, just some updates even just to make it a little more accessible that we're hoping to be integrating, so we'll talk more about that in the weeks to come. Thanks for listening, sharing, send in your questions, podcast@northridgerochester.com, we'd love to be able to interact with those. And especially now that we're in a season where we're recording after Sundays, if you've got things that come up while you're listening on Sunday, if you shoot those off on Sunday, we might even be able to talk about them in the podcast. We'd love to be able to do that. Please reach out, podcast@northridgerochester.com, or, since Drew puts up his email every single week these days, you might as well just email him. S=Something on my Heart Dichotomy now of slowing down and sense of urgency at same time.  Some of this is being forced upon us, some is our choice which is what I want to focus on, what we choose to reduce and increase during this unique time and maybe even make some paradigm shifts that will continue beyond this crisis. First, let's talk about changes that have been forced upon us. What has slowed down. The economy or more specific to this podcast..work, some of you may have an increase in work especially if you're in medical profession. Most of us have seen a slowdown, or worst case maybe even a loss of a job, and I realize some of you may have been forced to slow because you have actually contracted the coronavirus. Travel.  I'm working from home and as a result I'm spending 2 hours a day at home that I would normally spend in my car, which is a cramped little Fiat, or as I jokingly call my "sports car". When you factor in errands I run between work and home that commute time can add up to 3 or even 4 hours a day. General pace of life, for most of us, has slowed down.  What has increased during this time? Time at home. In some ways, fear and anxiety have increased, though I would argue that as Christians we should be experiencing the opposite emotions, we should be experiencing peace, reassurance, and purpose during this time in contrast to the world around us. It seems to me like there is more time available which is interesting.  The reality is that time is constant. We have the same 24 hours given to us as a gift each day.  The reality is that we are experiencing an increase in certain activities  or you could say an increase in the percentage of time we spend in certain activities.  Let's shift now from what is out of our control to what is in our control. Praise God that gave us free will and the freedom and ability to choose.  So what are some ways we can choose to increase or decrease certain things or maybe a better way of saying it how can we make good choices to best utilize the time that we are given as well as the situation that God has placed us in right now, to make a shift in our behavior and priorities both now and moving forward in our entire lives, both in work and out of work, as well as in the lives of others we impact and interact with in our lives.  I'll start with some broad, philosophical concepts and then bring it back to the practical.  To make it really simple which is generally I've found the best way to be, we need to focus more on God and less on us, or you could say less on the world.  Here are a number of scriptures that speak to this in different ways. Deut 30:19-20a "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey his voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days;".  Colossians 3:2 "Set your mind on things above, no on things on the earth".  Romans 8:5-6 "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace".  John 3:30 "He must increase, but I must decrease". 1 Cor 3:11-15 "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire". Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it."  Now, some application.  Let's get into the word and in prayer.  Here are several suggestions for you to get started or to increase your immersion in the word of God. First, WHAT to read. Rayburn Hall - 2 OT, 5 Ps, 1 Prov, 2 NT, Mike Mayo - History, Poetry, Prophets, Gospel, Epistles (what I'm doing using 5 different Bible audio apps. Bobby Hall from Men's Night Out, Fall, 2019 - 8 chapters every day for 30 days (2-1/2 to 3 yrs to read NT), a way to go deep. Chronological.  Where are you in life?-Psalms at night, Proverbs to make a decision, John great place to start to really learn who Jesus is as both God and man and why he came to earth.  HOW - Pray for God to speak to you and not stress over quantity, if you feel led to stay in one verse or one chapter do it.  Value the discipline of having a plan to follow each day but don't turn your plan into a god and fall into legalism. The point is to hear from God not to check off a task on your list. 5 Fingers from Navigators Video about ways to consume the Bible,.  Pick A time (what can you stick to consistently, maybe lunch or break at work, morning, night.  Ask these questions 1. Who wrote this 2. Who were they writing to 3. What is the message 4. What does this reveal about the character of God 5. How is this connected to God “-Adam Union.  There's certainly more we can say about being the spirit including prayer, but let's shift now to what are things of the flesh, things we should be decreasing during this time and moving forward. 2 things to avoid, one is satisfying the lusts of our flesh. With a bit more time on our hands, we will be tempted to indulge in overeating, escaping through alcohol or drugs, or watching a lot of TV, particularly things that don't honor God like pornagraphy. Another thing to avoid is to too inwardly focused.  Spending time alone in prayer and the word is good, relaxing with some TV or a good book or taking a nap is good in moderation, but don't forget to look around to see who God would have us blessing and connecting with. Play a game with your kids, have a cup of coffee and alone time with your wife, text or call your neighbors close by as well as friends, family members and acquaintences far away to see how they are doing and whether they need anything including prayer.  Treat your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit, eat healthy and exercise, take walks or a jog.  Set healthy limits for yourself for eating and drinking.  If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation.  I heard on the Albert Mohler The Briefing podcast that marijuana sales have shot up during this time.  1 Cor 6:12 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." Just because Marijuana has become legal in many states doesn't mean we should consume it. Just because the Bible does not say you should not have any alcohol, doesn't mean it's OK to drink beyond moderation in fact it speaks strictly against that. When it comes to our work, just because we may have less oversight working from home, doesn't mean we should be any less productive.  To the extent that we are able, if we are blessed to still be employed, as Colossians 3:23 says "whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men".  Put in a full day's work as you normally would.  Don't be like the servant that buried the talent but rather put your time to good use so that your employer will have a return on their investment in you. Another thought on how to use this time.  Forgive everyone in your life and continue to forgive them.  Here are 3 groups to focus on. First forgive yourself.  During times of reflection, it's easy to think about your past and mistakes you have made. Remember that God has forgiven you and what's good enough for Him should be good enough for you.  Psalm 103:12 says "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us". You're partnering with the devil and listening to his voice above the Lord's when you continue to condemn yourself and believe his accusations for past wrongs. Second, forgive individuals how have harmed you and if appropriate ask them to forgive you. This includes people who have harmed you in the past as well those harming you now.  Third, forgive groups of people or organizations that have either harmed you directly or done harm or evil in general.  I'm thinking personally about family members as well as about political parties and political leaders. Matthew 6:14-15, immediately after Jesus gave us what we called the Lord's Prayer, he said "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive their trespasses, either will your father forgive your trespasses". Now back from the practical to the philosophical. Here in NC, Spring has sprung and every day reveals more life as the trees are budding, the birds are chirping and the grass is growing and turning more green.  Life is bursting forth and it makes me think that the paradigm shift that I want to adopt and carry forward beyond this season of the Coronavirus is to live life more abundantly, life in the spirit and not in the flesh, through my work and through my relationship with God, myself, and my family and others in my life.  And when life gets back to "normal", I don't want to fall into old habits that are not God-pleasing and life giving.  I want to look back at this time in my life, whether I'm looking back from this or the other side of heaven, as a time when I made a tangible and meaningful shift to be more a part of God's story and less a part of mine.    E=Example of Faith at work There's been a lot of talk during this Coronavirus about what's essential.  I happen to work for an industry to makes products that are considered essential or critical during this downtime.  This has reminded about how so much of our life is spent on non-essential things, though we've made a habit of calling them needs when they're truly wants.  As an example, in Dave Ramsey's FPU he talks about how we call things like a new car a need when it's truly a want when you have an older car that works fine.  He also talks about how when you're gazelle intense and trying to pay down your debt and get ahead financially, you do things like eat rice and beans, which is a reminder to me that although food is essential to living, the type of food we eat can easily slip into the "wants" category and not the "needs" category.  This also led me not to just think about the value of simplifying our lives and not living in excess, but also how each of us through our work in some way contributes toward God blessing all of humanity.  I've talked in the past about Tim Keller's reference to God's Common Grace in his book "Every Good Endeavor", and how all of our work is sacred to the extent that God sends rain on the just and the unjust, as it says in Matt 5:45, we are a part of the way that God blesses all humans,.  Here are some examples I recently noticed of this common grace.  We just bought a Cat litter system that has separate compartmets, making it easier and cleaner when our 11 year old daughter changes the litter box.  I watched a 3 part series from I believe the Discovery Channel called "Harley and the Davidsons" about how how 2 Davidson brothers and the engineering genius of Bill Harley made a motorcyle that was a step above others and one that has blessed many many people over the last half plus century.,  As a third example, I'm going to reflect on some of the things I've done big and small, that have contributed to God's common grace to other my work and rather than share that with you I invite you ponder on your own career, past present and future and how you are a tool of common grace and as such a great example of faith at work. A=Announcements   Will return to weekly release in June after finish with Colson Fellows   H=Handy tip to increase productivity and effectiveness  From a quote heard recently from Scott Peltin, Founder, Tignum, is not a faith based organization, but I thought was valuable and pertinent for this time we're in right now "During these critical times it is important to recognize that these are uncharted times and they will require epic leadership. To do this, you will need to show up every day at your best. This means preparing diligently for your day and your critical meetings, recharging your own cognitive and emotional batteries throughout the day, and strategically multiplying your energy throughout your teams. People will need additional direction, extra calmness and self-belief, and a level of humility and vulnerability from you to admit that you don't have all the answers. Great leaders get a little better every day but this doesn't happen by chance.  It must be a choice."

First, we turn to Jacob Patterson of Think Tank Gallery, as we drop in on the night of their media preview for their next big show Drinkin', Smokin', West Coastin'. Then we unlock the No Pro time machine (Where do you think all that Patreon money goes to?) to enter the world of Nocturnal Fandango before The Sudden Loneliness Gift disrupted their dreams and plans. That's where we find Jason and Kevin Davidson, the couple at the heart of that company, weeks after Have You Seen Jake? ended, before a tragic fire--an uncanny echo of stories past--took Kevin away from Jason. All that, and Noah shares his tale of a Technodelic experience.   Wait, what?

In Part One of our dark, drunken odyssey, Jack and an unconscious Tom shoot the shit with our comrades north of the border: Alistair Craig of Scottish Labour Young Socialists (SLYS), and Liam Gleeson, chair of Scottish Young Labour. With Scotland undergoing its greatest transformation since the Act of Union, the boys discuss Labour's role in this brave new world, and how they've adapted - or struggled - in the face of SNP dominance. Tears are shed, Jim Murphy is libelled, and neither guest has any recollection of speaking. It's all good.

Pastor Rus Says Welcome to the sermon podcast for Sep. 25, 2016 from First Lutheran in Shelby, Ohio with Pastor Rus.    You can't take it with you, but a better question is would you really want to?  What is so valuable in this world after all compared to the treasures that really matter? Cash?  Nice motorcycles?  You can't take it with you, and maybe you really shouldn't want to.  Not if there is something so much better that you can...   1 Timothy 6:6-10 6:6 Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; 6:7 for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; 6:8 but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. 6:9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

Check their website for details, news articles, performance schedules and music. JohnnyJSwing.com Veteran’s Charity Ride to Sturgis is teaming up with Mark Wahlberg and Indian Motorcycle Co to provide 20 wounded veterans a ride to surges this year. veterans charity ride helps vets across the country with the healing process that comes with life after service. Vets get road therapy and a chance to participate in a nine day ride from Los Angeles to Sturgis, as well as a chance to talk about their experiences on the battle field and bond with fellow vets, bikers and supporters. According to the VCR FB page, 22 veterans a day commit suicide. Many are returning home with PTSD and severe bodily trauma. If you’d like to help out with this cause you can visit http://veteranscharityride.org/ for more details. On that site you can donate, find veterans resources or just learn about the founders and how the ride started. Chapter one: 1971 Little Johnny was born in February 1971. The FIM was founded in 1904 in Paris, and began sanctioning races across Europe. In America, Indian Motorcycles was established in 1901, and when Harley joined the scene in 1903, the FAM was created and began to sanction events in the States, until the organization changed it’s name in 1924 to the AMA. A decade later, in the UK, off road trials were gaining popularity for good reason, and quickly transformed into scrambles, or motocross as it was known more widely in Europe. Motocross, Trials, and Scrambles all grew in popularity and participation all throughout Europe until 1966. That’s the year that Swedish Champ Torsten Hallman brought it to the USA. In 1967 the Baja 1000 took the Southwest by storm, and in 1969 the first Baja 500 was run. By the 1970s, Supercross had formed, with the first indoor race taking place in the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1972. This is where little Johnny’s story begins. Chapter 2: News-ish items - Skully Helmets are vaporware and have sadly shuttered shop - Price Point closes it’s web presence! :( - The show’s not that bad…honest! - BMW Titan - not a BMW concept! - McFarlane Toys releases prototype Daryl Dixon figurine - Harley and the Davidsons set to premiere on Discovery Channel on Sept 5th. - Honda CBR250RR… not interested. - BRP Sues somebody, comes away with an electric Spyder concept - Jever’s Harley build made me Jever all over the alley behind my house. Chapter 3: Feeling left out There’s an e-mail circulating around the Moto Pod-o-sphere. I feel left out, but I haven’t heard Cafe Racer or Cleveland Moto weigh in yet, so maybe I’m not the only one who missed it. I need and want your e-mails. Well, not really, but I do like them. This opens a question of self-imposed gender equality. Chapter 4: Upcoming events in the Los Angeles area. Rides, clinics, track days, etc. etc. Conclusion: Stay alert for booby traps. For reals. www.creative-riding.com www.creative-riding.tumblr.com creativeridingpodcast@gmail.com @Creative_Rider www.facebook.com/CreativeRidingPodcast
