Tightrope Walker / Mountain Climber / Me is one of two songs that were written specifically for Album. Joe wanted to write a piece specifically for Molly Hager and remembered a half-finished song from 2012 that he thought might be worth a second look. The resulting song is a three-part story that explores a person's relationship to their drive. Molly Hager recorded this song for Album. http://BPN.fm/Album to get the music. I talk a lot on the podcast about the connection between Buffalo and Rochester, especially in the late 90s and early 00s. My guest on episode 44 is someone who lived in both cities during his college years. This episode also presented another opportunity for me to reconnect with yet another old friend. I'm starting to sense a theme here. Anyway, Vincent Garguilo has a strong connection to both Buffalo and Rochester. He has been in a few bands from this area (Dead to the World, Sincerely Yours, and Taken by the Burning). Since moving back to NYC in the mid-00s, Vincent has also played in a few other bands. These bands include The Only Weapon, Behind the Bullet, and Tightrope Walker. He also had a stint as a guitarist in Shai Hulud before he moved to NYC. We discuss all of these bands, as well as some of the other interesting things Vincent has done outside of hardcore. We also talk about him traveling down to Alabama to check out Furnace Fest this year. Additionally, Vincent has had some pretty interesting business ventures that he talks briefly about. There are links to Vincent's bands at the bottom of the show notes. I am also including one song from Taken By The Burning at the beginning of the episode. Like I said during the episode, I think they are one of the more underrated bands to come out of this city. Some people try to run away from their family legacy and forge their own path. Nik Wallenda has been able to make his own path while continuing in his family’s footsteps. While he is seventh-generation member of The Flying Wallendas aerial entertainers, he has used his determination and focus to defy the odds and take acrobatic stunts further than anyone else ever has. On this week’s episode, I sit down with the 11-time world record holder to discuss his storied career and life performing on the wire. Nik is an inspiring example of how preparation and following your heart can lead you to great achievements. During our conversation, we discuss his family’s history and, while he was raised by entertainers, he had to fight to be one himself. We also break down what it’s like to live life on the actual edge, how shake-ups at major television networks nearly cost him the chance to perform a stunt he had prepared two years for, how fear is a constant in his life but also something that motivates him, and what he’s saying to himself when he’s hundreds of feet in the air. You’ll find out how he goes about assembling his team for stunts, the advice he has for rebounding after a tough defeat, and why love is the ultimate teaching tool for him. Nik’s new book, Facing Fear: Step Out in Faith and Rise Above What’s Holding You Back, dives into how he’s used fear to overcome some of the toughest situations he’s faced. This episode shares what it means to set goals for yourself, prepare as much as possible for any scenario, and why you must be careful with the kind of noise you let into your mind. This is an inspirational talk and you’ll even hear what Nik still hopes to walk over across the globe.
Check out our interview with NIK WALLENDA!! He's part of the famous Tightrope Walking Family...the Flying Wallendas!!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
American acrobat, aerialist, daredevil, high wire artist, and author Nik Wallenda who is known for his high-wire performances without a safety net shares how he faces fear. He holds 11 Guinness World Records for various acrobatic feats but was best known as the first person to walk a tightrope stretched directly over Niagara Falls.
Nik Wallenda is the face of the Flying Wallendas, the famous circus family known for performing crazy feats without safety nets. Nik is also known for his daring televised tightrope walks, including over Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, and, in 2020, he will walk over an active volcano. Nik is a seventh-generation member of the Flying Wallendas and has been walking the wire since he took his first steps, but he had never experienced fear until a tragic accident in 2017. The eight-person pyramid he and several members of his family were practicing collapsed, and five of its members fell thirty feet to the ground. Miraculously, they all survived, but the accident changed Nik's life forever. For the first time, he felt fear, and he had to learn to get past it to get back out on the wire. Most of us will never walk a tightrope, but we face things that scare us every day. Whether putting ourselves out there socially or seeking a dream job, all of us allow anxieties and fears to hold us back. Facing Fear is a reader-centric memoir, interweaving parts of Nik's personal story of the accident and how he conquered his fear with practical advice for readers to overcome whatever fears are holding them back. This practical book will help everyday people step out in faith and trust that God will hold them steady, even when they're afraid. Sermon recorded Sunday - July 14th, 2019. Pastor Bob Flayhart preaching at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
Steve and I met in a twelve step program and I really like how Steve nails it to start when he says everybody does this a little different and it’s ok. This is his story and opinion. He grew up in a family where alcoholics and alcohol was prevalent. Steve says alcohol isn’t his problem but it’s the disease of alcoholism that is the problem and the pit in the stomach that comes along with the disease which needs to be filled. He says he never had a social drink in his life....same!!He found cocaine at the age of 18 and says this sped up the progression and brought him to his knees much quicker. If it had to do with intellect or love, Steve says he would have gotten sober a long time ago. But it’s not about those things, It’s about the allergy to alcohol that we have. Substituting other drugs in an attempt to get “sober” didn’t work He found a twelve step program for the first time when he was 21 years old. He kept coming but didn’t take any other suggestions and life got worse for him with stops in jails and institutions along his journey. Finally out of love for Steve, his parents filed a Section 35 as a result of him not being harmful to himself and others. Ultimately Steve encountered his sponsor who told Steve to just try to go one day without a drug and if he changed his mind the drugs would still be around to find. Steve started to get honest and take suggestions along with working the steps of sobriety. He started to get better.

I have to admit to having some excitement about this podcast episode. I've been a big fan of Rachael Yamagata‘s music for a long time. Going back at least to 2003 when I first heard her self-titled EP and then in '04 with the release of Happenstance.Great musicians write songs that connect with our individual stories, and those stories become a soundtrack to our lives. Happenstance was that for me in many ways. The driving beat and stinging lyrics to Letter Read remain one of my favorite songs. It's probably one of the best sad/breakup songs out there. Add her piano-driven, jazz-styled songwriting to the rest of that album with tracks like Under My Skin, Reason Why, and Be Be Your Love and you have plenty of reason to explore her songbook. This past Friday, she released her latest album Tightrope Walker. It's simply brilliant. And it's already getting featured all over the place. The Appetizer Radio Show is showcasing it, as well a great indie radio platforms like Mountain Stage, NPR Music, and more.I've wondered what it would be like to have a conversation with someone whose music I've followed for years but not ever talked with. I finally had the chance to find out. I want to give a big thanks to my good friend and past DIY Artist Route guest Chandler Coyle for helping to make this wonderful conversation happen. Chandler is a connector, and one of my favorite people. Here's what I discovered right away in talking with Rachael: the music connection is the tip of the iceberg. It's really a heart connection that draws us towards the artists we love.By heart connection I'm referring to the philosophies and ideals we live by. For me, I believe that love is the highest calling we can have. Inside of each of us is a garden. What we plant in our hearts turns to fruits we produce with our lives. My mantra each day is to plant love inside my heart and mind so that it can be reaped to give to others. This is the heart of Growth Farming. There's a principle of Like Attracting Like and that's certainly something that every one of my friends who are past guests on the podcast have in common. We all believe that joining forces to help others is the path to take to succeed. Rachael is a wonderful example of just the heart and mind to do that for artists and entrepreneurs alike here.Big Takeaways In This Podcast With Rachael YamagataMy wife Mrs. Smith was very pleased to learn that, like her, Rachael is a very big cat fan. She shares a bit of insight into her love for her cats in this conversation. I thought that was just perfect. One day we'll have to find a way to get Mrs. Smith and Ms. Yamagata together to compare cat notes, don't you think?Writing relationships in their ups is not always easy, but writing about the downs comes more naturally. Some people try to figure out why relationships go the way they do instead of just complaining about what didn't work. For songwriters who dive into this side of the story, it takes on a whole new thing. We also learn why my friend William Fitzsimmons and Rachael should do a co-write together. The entrepreneurial side of art and music is certainly within the grasp of any artist who wants to be successful. However, the ball is in your court. If you want to win in this realm, you have to learn everything you can about how to be a business with your music. It's the realm of what Rachael refers to as "Artist As CEO.
Rachael Yamagata joins us to share her stories on her new album Tightrope Walker and her incredible affinity for cats. She also dives deeper into her process for adding the right team members to her music business to be successful over the years, and illustrates how she's modeling "Artist As CEO."
The title of her fourth album, “Tightrope Walker”, refers to living life without a net, or in her case the end of a relationship. Her sultry voice and eclectic array of instrumentation make this a great album about the power of perseverance.
This week we’re joined by New York based singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata. To date, she’s released 4 solo EPs and 3 full length albums, and she’s collaborated with artists such as Jason Mraz, Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes and past guest Terra Naomi. Her music has also been featured in shows such as The OC, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother. Rachael has seen both sides of the major and independent spectrum, and is currently gearing up to release her latest album Tightrope Walker independently. In this intervew we hear about Rachael's experience as an independent musician, how she finds that work/life balance we're all searching for, and why collaboration is so important to her. Highlights: - Sometimes we all need the melody and chord progression to help us get the words out - Ross shares a story about finding out how a fellow college classmate was a fan of Rachael’s - Rachael shares the pros/cons of being both a major and independent artist - When you’re on a major label, you’re... In this episode, I have five folk songs for you. They are songs about love, songs about courage, and one bluesy song about drinking... and love. This episode is dedicated to my mom, who is coordinating our family's disaster response to the damage done by the hurricane. The songs in this episode are "Hurricane Winslow" by The Revivalists, "Mount Mitchell" by Wainwright Brothers, "Chesterfields" by Bek vol Zand, "Szemkel" by Cisza Jak Ta, and "Tightrope Walker" by Heather Styka.
Brilliant suspense is inherent in this song: The piano sparkles in the highest range with the bass playing around it like a voice, until Kristiina Tuomi comes in on this dramatic fundament with a voice of sheer beauty.
