Episode 80: Opting into the Composition API with Oscar Spencer

Enjoy the Vue

With the release of Vue 3, developers now have access to the Composition API, a new way to write Vue components. This API allows features to be grouped together logically, rather than having to organize single-file components by function. Using the Composition API can lead to more readable code, and gives developers more flexibility and scalability when developing their applications, which signals a bright future for Vue. At least, this is what today's guest believes! Today, we speak with Oscar Spencer, developer at Tidelift and co-author of the Grain programming language, about Vue's Composition API and why he believes it represents great things for Vue. We touch on Options API, our opinions of a template-first approach, and why Composition API is infinitely better than Mixins, as well as how JavaScript can prepare developers for Options API and what to watch out for when you first start working with Composition API in Vue. All this plus this week's picks and so much more when you tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: An introduction to today's guest, Oscar Spencer. The panel shares what sound their Slack makes when they receive a new message. Oscar shares his personal passion for the Vue Composition API. Why he believes that Vue's bright future includes the options API too. Why Composition API represents great things for the future of Vue. The panel discusses commit messages, interactive rebasing, and squashing. What Oscar means when he says that the Composition API makes Vue more scalable. Oscar and the panel weigh in on taking a template-first approach  Discover Oscar's situational approach to composables when reusing business logic. Composition API versus Mixins and why Oscar believes Composition API is superior. Whether Options API or Composition API is easier to teach to a beginner developer. How JavaScript prepares developers for Options API, which Oscar describes as ‘cozy'. Oscar on how to know when to use Composition API versus Options API. Why you would choose Composition API over simply using JavaScript: reactivity. The panel shares some of the longest Vue components they have worked on. Render functions in Vue and Oscar's perspective on React versus Vue. What to look out for if you're new to Composition API; not understanding Vue's reactivity. Why the coolest thing Oscar has done in Vue is write a backend using the reactivity API. This week's picks: Only Murders in the Building, The Artful Escape, Dyson Sphere Program, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, and more! Tweetables: “When I look at the Composition API, I see a very bright future for Vue.” — @oscar_spen (https://twitter.com/oscar_spen) [0:02:22] “The Composition API just gets rid of a whole host of issues that you have with Mixins. In fact, Mixins were my only complaint in Vue 2.” — @oscar_spen (https://twitter.com/oscar_spen) [0:24:05] “Don't be too scared of the [Composition API]. It was definitely designed with composition in mind. It was designed for you to have your composables consuming composables and not blowing up the world – [while] being fairly easy to follow as well.” — @oscar_spen (https://twitter.com/oscar_spen) [0:27:34] “Regular JavaScript modules only get you so far because, fundamentally, what these regular JavaScript modules are missing is the reactivity. What the Composition API is letting us do is compose things that are reactive.” — @oscar_spen (https://twitter.com/oscar_spen) [0:41:44] “By far the biggest gotcha with the Composition API is not understanding Vue's reactivity. That's going to be the biggest gotcha that you can possibly run into. I highly recommend, instead of trying to wing it, just go look at a tutorial.” — @oscar_spen (https://twitter.com/oscar_spen) [0:57:02] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Vue-oxford (https://www.npmjs.com/package/vue-oxford) Unconventional Vue - Vue as a Backend Framework (https://www.vuemastery.com/conferences/vueconf-us-2020/unconventional-vue-vue-as-a-backend-framework), Oscar Spencer (VueConf US 2020) AITA for being mad at my parents for decorating my first house without my consent? First Draft Episode #227: Courtenay Hameister Courtenay Hameister, debut author of memoir Okay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went From Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things, and former host, co-producer and head writer of Live Wire Radio. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Books by Beverly Cleary (author of Ramona Quimby, Age 8, Beezus and Ramona, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle) and and Judy Blume (author of Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, Forever, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing) and The Crystal Cave series by Mary Stewart were some of Courtenay’s favorites growing up Create More, Fear Less is an organization in Portland Courtenay volunteers with that works with anxious kids While Courtenay went to New York University, she had the chance to work with legendary comedy group The State. The State — made up of Kevin Allison, Michael Ian Black, Robert Ben Garant, Todd Holoubek, Michael Patrick Jann, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Michael Showalter, and David Wain — was formed in 1998 and had a self-titled comedy sketch show on MTV from 1992-1995. You can learn more about the history of the group in The Union of the State by Corey Stulce. Members of The State went on to create Reno 911, which is coming back! “The 7,000 Dollar Pyramid,” is one of The State’s sketches that Courtenay remembers Robert Ben Garant writing Writing Movies For Fun and Profit: How We Made a Billion Dollars at the Box Office, and You Can, Too! by former State members and co-writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant The Joan Didion quote Courtenay paraphrases is, “I don't know what I think until I write it down.” Some of Courtenay’s favorite guests from her many years of hosting Live Wire include: comedian, storyteller, director and actor Mike Birbiglia, who is best known for Sleepwalk With Me, which was also a comedy special and a New York Times bestselling book, Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories, and his new comedy special, The New One is also going to be a book, coming out in May 20202, The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad; Carrie Brownstein, guitarist with Sleater-Kinney (who have a new CD in 2019, The Center Won’t Hold), co-creator and writer of TV show Portlandia, and author of memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl; director Todd Haynes (who has directed Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, and this year’s Dark Waters; Cheryl Strayed, author of Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life From Dear Sugar and memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail; and David Rakoff, humorist and author of Fraud: Essays, Don't Get Too Comfortable: The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never- Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems Courtenay’s friend Daniel H. Wilson wrote Robopocalypse: A Novel (which was optioned by Steven Spielberg, but after some delays has now been thrown over to Michael Bay) was the one who introduced Courtenay to his agent, Laurie Fox, who is an author in her own right, of The Lost Girls: A Novel and My Sister From the Black Lagoon: A Novel of My Life. Jean Garnett at Little, Brown was Courtenay’s editor Courtenay super recommends Sleepwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer (and, oh my god, would you look at that, he also has a TED talk!) The Oprah and James Frey controversy which exploded over his memoir, A Million Little Pieces, is an inevitable reference point for a conversation about what “truth” means in the memoir category Courtenay’s recommendation for David Carr’s memoir, Night of the Gun: A Reporter Investigates the Darkest Story of His Life. His Own, was so persuasive that I bought the audiobook that night! I admit to being a complete comedy nerd, and having recently mightily enjoyed John Hodgman’s collection of personal essays, Medallion Status: True Stories From Secret Rooms. Jennifer Pastiloff (author of On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real, and Listening Hard) and Lidia Yuknavitch (author of memoir The Chronology of Water and Verge: Stories, out Feb. 4, 2020!) teach a class called “Writing and the Body” that incorporates yoga and writing to enrich personal stories. Humor writer Steve Almond, author of Bad Stories: What Just Happened to Our Country? and William Stoner and the Battle For the Inner Life: Bookmarked. Writers Samantha Irby (author of We Are Never Meeting in Real Life: Essays, Meaty: Essays and omg she has a new one coming out this year, Wow, No Thank You!) and Jenny Lawson, aka The Blogess (author of Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir and Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things), were bloggers before they had books, and they indicate the kind of conversational writing style that Courtenay tends to naturally align with in her writing Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2009 TED Talk, “Your Elusive Creative Genius” Dan Harris, author of 10% Happier Revised Edition: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story, and Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-to Book Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking and her TED talk on the subject of introverts Courtenay admires Michael Ian Black’s evolution as a writer. Especially significant to her was his honesty in the memoir Navel Gazing: True Stories of Bodies, Mostly Mine (But Also My Mom’s, Which I Know Sounds Weird). His newest book, A Better Man, tackles toxic masculinity in the form of letters to his son as he goes off to college. I have always dreamt of being able to link to an article about Jeff Bezos’s dick pics (just kidding but here we go): this incident was wild - The National Enquirer allegedly tried to blackmail Jeff Bezos, threatening to release intimate pictures of him unless he paid up. Instead, Bezos released the pics himself and told them to screw off. It was wild. It was great. That incident calls to mind So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This,” the Modern Love essay by Mandy Len Catron, references Dr. Arthur Aron’s study, which included 36 questions to generate intimacy. (And hey, look at that, Mandy has TED talks about love stories, too!) I want to hear from you! Have a question about writing or creativity for Sarah Enni or her guests to answer? Scott Stabile’s inspirational posts and videos have attracted a huge and devoted social media following. His previous works include Just Love, Iris, and the Li’l Pet Hospital series. A passionate speaker and love advocate, Scott runs daylong empowerment workshops nationally and internationally. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra What does love invite me to do in this moment?  or  How is love inviting me to respond in this moment? When You Tripped Up When Scott is tripping up the most it is always around communication. It is always around an unwillingness to sit in front of one another and be honest with what’s going on. This includes being willing and present to his partner’s truth. Showing up to a conversation without the need to be right. It is important to consider timing. If we enter into communication with our partners when there’s really no good possibility of anything positive happening, we’re setting ourselves up for failure. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever No one can read your mind. Scott used to get so frustrated and angry that his partner should know what he’s thinking and responding in accordance to what is going on in his mind. This expectation always leads to disappointment. A Payoff of Partnership When Scott came into partnership with himself and love as the guiding force in his life, and was finally able to heal from the tragic loss of his parents when he was a child. Once he partnered with love all the relationships in his life shifted. And his life changed for the better, over and over and over again. This is a very exciting episode for me. A bit about Cheryl: her first book Torch in 2006, her second book, the memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail was published in 2012, and has been translated into more than 40 languages. It debuted at number 7 on the New York Times Best Seller list and was chosen by Oprah as her first selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0. Reese Witherspoon plays Cheryl and Laura Dern as Cheryl's mother, Bobbi in the amazing film adaptation of WILD. The film's screenplay was written by Nick Hornby. In July 2012, Vintage Books published Strayed's third book: Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar, a selection of Strayed's popular "Dear Sugar" advice column, which she wrote for the web site The Rumpus from 2010 to 2012. The book debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list at number 5. Strayed's 4th book, Brave Enough debuted in the advice and self-help category on the New York Times Best Seller list at number 10. Do you have a favorite book you return to over and over again? James does, and today the author of that book joins him on The James Altucher Show. Many of you know James does a Twitter Q&A every Thursday. But what you probably didn't know is that before he jumps online he rereads one book... He turns to Sugar for inspiration. Sugar is the fictional character in Cheryl Strayed's book, Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar. Cheryl Strayed has had a rough life: sexual abuse, divorce, past drug abuse, and her mother's death. All this pushed her to do something radical with her life. She decided to take a hike. Not your everyday hike; she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Coast Trail from the Mojave Desert through California, Oregon, and Washington - and she did it alone. The hike finally healed her, and she turned it into her NY Times bestselling memoir, Wild. The book was then turned into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon. Oprah loved the book so much she restarted her book club just to highlight it. Cheryl's new book Brave Enough was just released in October. James asks her, "Why a book of quotes?" As Cheryl says in the introduction of her book... "I've always been a quote collector... From the comic to the profound, the simple to the complex, the sorrowful to the ecstatic, the inspiring to the stern, whenever I need consolation or encouragement, a clear-eyed perspective or a swift kick in the pants - which is often - quotes are what I turn to. They've been tacked to the walls of every home I've made. I've written them down in my journals and kept them on files in my computer. I've scribbled them on the back of ripped-open envelopes and drawn them across stretches of sand." Now that they've met, James is almost sorry, as he'll not be able to steal from her so easily going forward.   Resources and Links: Cheryl Strayed Website Brave Enough by Cheryl Strayed Wild by Cheryl Strayed and Wild (the movie) starring Reese Witherspoon Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed Torch by Cheryl Strayed Dear Sugar podcast Oprah's 2015 Book Club ------------What do YOU think of the show? Cheryl Strayed is the author of Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things. “There's a long history, of women especially, saying 'Well, I just got lucky.' I didn't just get lucky. I worked my fucking ass off. And then I got lucky. And if I hadn't worked my ass off, I wouldn't have gotten lucky. You have to do the work. You always have to do the work.” Thanks to TinyLetter, Trunk Club, and HP Matter for sponsoring this week's episode.
