Oh, how the party has changed. At a moment when the Republican Party has shifted dramatically from its Reaganite roots, I talk with Washington Post columnist Max Boot, whose definitive biography of Ronald Reagan arrives with particular resonance. Through a decade of research, Boot reveals a pragmatic leader who would likely be puzzled by today's GOP—a president who supported immigration reform, worked with Gorbachev to reduce nuclear weapons, and prided himself on compromise, getting "80 percent of what he wanted" rather than demanding everything. Boot shares with me a fascinating exploration of Reagan's true legacy.
This sermon uses the story of a homeless man seeking reconciliation with his estranged mother as a springboard to explore the book of Hosea. The pastor parallels the mother's conditional love with God's unconditional love, contrasting the son's need for transformation rather than mere change. Hosea's marriage to Gomer, a prostitute, serves as a parable of God's unwavering faithfulness to his unfaithful people, Israel, ultimately culminating in the arrival of a savior who offers redemption. The sermon emphasizes that humanity's inherent sinfulness necessitates not self-improvement, but divine transformation through Jesus Christ, a message particularly relevant during the Christmas season. The overarching purpose is to offer hope and reassurance of God's relentless love to those feeling distant from Him.Support the showThanks for listening!

Hosea continues to describe Israel's idolatry, using the imagery of a baking disaster and bird soon to be caught in a net. It's impossible to escape God's righteous judgment of sin, but He nevertheless remains faithful to forgive all who trust in Him! The Rev. Dustin Beck, pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda, TX, joins the Rev. David Boisclair to study Hosea 6:1-7:2. Hosea tells the powerful story of a prophet commanded to marry an unfaithful woman, Gomer, as a living symbol of God's boundless love for Israel despite its repeated betrayals. Through heartbreak and redemption, Hosea's marriage becomes a vivid portrayal of how deeply God desires His people to return to Him, even when they chase after idols. Packed with raw emotion, prophetic warnings, and a message of divine mercy, this book captures God's relentless pursuit and offers a stirring reminder that restoration is always possible—through Jesus--no matter how far one has wandered.

Drawing inspiration from St. Monica, Fr. Kirby emphasizes the power of patience, kindness, and unwavering love in bringing back those who have strayed.—Morning Offering with Fr. Kirby, August 27, 2024—————————Every morning, join Father Jeffrey Kirby as he begins the day with prayer and reflection. In a few short minutes, Father Kirby guides you in prayer, shares a brief reflection grounding your day in the Church's rhythm of feast days and liturgy, and provides you with the encouragement necessary to go forward with peace and strength. Let us do as the saints urge and begin our days in prayer together so as a community of believers we may join the Psalmist in saying, “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3-4)

Had a go at making the show as pretty as I could, influenced by Amelia Empson's gorgeous song 'Closer'. She's my new favorite thing. Strayed off the track a bit in a couple of places, James McMurtry ain't that purdy, Jason Molina is just plain dark, but mainly true to sweeter sounds of the American persuasion.

The Covid-19 response was a crucible of politics and public health—a volatile combination that produced predictably bad results. As scientific expertise became entangled with political motivations, the public-health establishment found itself mired in political encampment. It was, as Sandro Galea argues, a crisis of liberalism: a retreat from the principles of free speech, open debate, and the pursuit of knowledge through reasoned inquiry that should inform the work of public health. Across fifty essays, Within Reason chronicles how public health became enmeshed in the insidious social trends that accelerated under Covid-19. Galea challenges this intellectual drift towards intolerance and absolutism while showing how similar regressions from reason undermined social progress during earlier eras. Within Reason builds an incisive case for a return to critical, open inquiry as a guiding principle for the future public health we want—and a future we must work to protect. Dr. Sandro Galea is a physician, epidemiologist, author and the Robert A. Knox Professor at Boston University School of Public Health. He previously held academic and leadership positions at Columbia University, the University of Michigan, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He has published more than 1000 scientific journal articles, 75 chapters, and 24 books, and his research has been featured extensively in current periodicals and newspapers. Galea holds a medical degree from the University of Toronto and graduate degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University. Dr. Galea was named one of Time magazine's epidemiology innovators and has been listed as one of the “World's Most Influential Scientific Minds.” He is past chair of the board of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health and past president of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and of the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Epidemiological Society. He is the author of The Contagion Next Time and Well: What We Need to Talk About When We Talk About Health. His new book is Within Reason: A Liberal Public Health for an Illiberal Time.

Wild is a 2014 American biographical adventure drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and starring Reese Witherspoon, with Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Michiel Huisman, Gaby Hoffmann, Kevin Rankin, and W. Does she deserve the second chance she's begging for? As the least successful of two sisters, you know your mother already worries chronically about you. And since your brother-in-law died by suicide last year, you're hesitant to share that you also suffer from depression — but you don't want to keep her in the dark, either. What's the right way to handle this dilemma? Described as "irreplaceable" by your employers, your workload equals or surpasses that of longer-tenured coworkers who make twice as much as you. How can you renegotiate your salary without coming off as entitled and greedy? [Thanks to The Connector’s Advantage author Michelle Tillis Lederman for her help with this one!] Your dad lives remotely with a partner who's generally abusive toward him, with health problems that make it difficult for her to be left alone for long periods of time. This means she either comes with him when he visits (complaining the whole time and making everyone miserable), or she stays home and texts or calls incessantly to berate him the whole time. How can you help him work up the nerve to end this obviously unhappy relationship? How do you get over the anger and confusion brought on by the ex who ghosted you with zero explanation after a year-long relationship — especially when his thirst-trap photos keep showing up in your dating app? "Even after I turned away from Jesus, He didn't turn away from me. Do I believe in miracles? Yes, because I am one. You're likely reading this today because you are asking for a miracle, too. Someone you love has strayed far from God. Perhaps you are the parent who painstakingly raised them to know Jesus. You've prayed. Hard. You've cried. A lot. You trusted God. In today's episode, the guys discuss how to reach those who have strayed from the faith. The majority of people who have “backslidden” actually had a false conversion to begin with. This does not refer to the times in which a Christian struggles with his faith. There are many, unfortunately, who profess to know Christ but really do not. The longer we walk with the Lord, the more stories like this we will be able to recall. There are gateway sins which open the door to stray further from God. Someone who has strayed may find themselves in the position of wondering how they got to the place in which they find themselves. In the book of John, Jesus speaks of sin as an addictive behavior. The way to put sin to death is by looking to the Cross. Only God can offer us the strength to write off the things which rob us of our everlasting joy. Research shows that 85% of Americans pray. However, most of these prayers tend to be selfish rather than giving glory to God. The prayers of the righteous, however, are angled towards the glory of God rather than the glory of man. It is important to acknowledge that many people who stray from their faith have been hurt by their church. When a pastor falls, for example, it causes many people's faith to be rattled and confusing. For these people, we are called to be the rod of God and bring these lost people home by listening, understanding, and empathizing. We must go after people with the heart of Christ, welcoming others back to the faith. Similarly, we should be very careful of the judgmental spirit which may creep into us as the result of watching someone stray. Listeners are reminded that online pastors are not a replacement for having a local church of your own. The Bible often equates sin to not living. Then, listeners are offered points of self-reflection for consideration to determine if they are in danger of a backslide of their own. Finally, we receive valuable advice on how to avoid a potential backslide and reestablish our faith and relationship with God. Thanks for listening!
