Welcome to Church Pew Sports Ep 178 - Brains, Baggage & The Big Leagues - Why So Many Young Athletes Flame Out We welcome Kip Rodgers, founder of BrainCode Corp, for a deep and eye-opening conversation about what really goes on behind the scenes of the NFL Draft—and why so many talented athletes never live up to expectations. With over a decade of experience assessing NFL draft prospects' mental makeup, Kip shares how she uses neuroscience-based evaluations to help athletes, agents, and teams make better decisions. From entitlement issues to spiritual grounding, Kip dives into the mental, emotional, and spiritual traits that often determine whether a player succeeds or crashes out of the league. We discuss real stories of players who let pride and poor judgment derail their careers, and why some top talents fall in the draft for reasons beyond the field. Kip also explains the growing trend of college transfers, how money changes everything, and what she asks young players about their family life and faith background during evaluations. Also: What role does humility play in quarterback success? Why is strong faith a predictor of stability? And how should teams screen for red flags without crossing the line? It's a fascinating blend of sports psychology, faith, and football culture—an absolute must-listen for fans who care about what really shapes a player. Quincy Avery is known as the “QB Whisperer,” shaping the next generation of NFL stars and redefining the quarterback position both on and off the field. Starting his journey with nothing but a dream, a car, and an unshakeable belief in building greatness from scratch, Quincy’s story is one of relentless perseverance through adversity, including nights of homelessness and countless setbacks. As the founder of QB Takeover and subject of the new documentary The Quincy Avery Effect (streaming on Hulu), Quincy is dedicated not just to developing elite athletes, but to building better men through authentic mentorship, leadership, and community impact. His influence reaches far beyond the gridiron, empowering young men at every level to overcome obstacles, embrace leadership, and live life “like a quarterback.” Takeaways: Leadership is a Mindset, Not Just a Role: Quincy believes the attributes of a great quarterback—resilience, adaptability, and uplifting those around you—are essential to leadership in business, life, and beyond. Adversity Builds Strength: True greatness comes not from talent alone, but from persevering through setbacks, learning from failure, and refusing to give up when faced with challenges. Create Your Own Impact: Quincy’s mission extends past football; he seeks to transform lives by instilling character, providing opportunity, and building ecosystems where everyone can grow and win. Sound Bites: “I want people to live their life like a quarterback, because the way quarterbacks move and operate—they bring people along, they galvanize a team—and those are things we all can do every single day.” “The journey that I went on was crazy. I’ve had a thousand nights of homelessness... but my ability to work hard despite the initial outcome is what separated me.” “The first things I want to do is have a conversation with the parents. The biggest determining factor in the kids who I see are successful and the kids who I see aren’t—is their parents.” Quote by Mick: "You’ve got to take yourself serious because most people aren’t going to.” Connect & Discover Quincy: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/quincyavery/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/quincy-avery-293ab036/ QB Takeover: https://www.qbtakeover.com/ The Avery Effect Foundation: https://www.qbtakeover.com/the-avery-effect-foundation Documentary: The Quincy Avery Effect (Hulu) FOLLOW MICK ON:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mickunplugged/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mickunplugged/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mickunplugged LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mickhunt/Website: https://www.mickhuntofficial.com Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mick-unplugged/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I explore identity and its crucial role in personal growth and transformation. I share that transitioning to a new identity can be uncomfortable and chaotic. It's normal to feel like you're in a state of flux, especially when you're not quite who you used to be, nor fully who you're becoming. I share my experiences of navigating this in-between phase, particularly in my journey toward publishing books. This process started as an idea and has required significant effort and adaptation. Throughout the episode, I highlight the importance of language and mindset. I discuss how our subconscious mind prefers familiarity and safety, often resisting change even when necessary for growth. This resistance can manifest as self-doubt and imposter syndrome, creating a tug-of-war between our past and future selves. “Reinvention is a requirement. You will only go as far as you believe you can go.” —Travis Wallace Reinvention is not a luxury, it's a necessity. Gone are the days when we can simply coast on past achievements. In a world that constantly evolves, the ability to reinvent ourselves is no longer an option, but a requirement for reaching new heights of success and fulfillment. Failure to do so condemns us to stagnation, while those who dare to reinvent themselves unlock a world of new opportunities and unparalleled growth. Travis Wallace, known as the "Reinvention Expert," is passionate about helping individuals and athletes alike transform their lives and achieve unprecedented success. With a background in training the world's top athletes, Travis has honed his skills in guiding people through the process of personal and professional reinvention. Tune in as Daniel and Travis dive deep into the art of reinvention, exploring the importance of identity, overcoming ego and pride, and the role of emotional awareness in the transformation process. From athlete to elite coach, Travis has lived through the transformative power of reinvention. His mission is simple: help people break free from stagnation, master their minds, body, and identity, and step into their next evolution. What started as a personal journey quickly grew into a mission to help others achieve the same. Travis is the creator of The FR4MULA—a 4-phase process that drives lasting transformation. Through his work in The 100 Day Reinvention and The Reinvention Lab, he teaches clients how to embrace change, develop unshakable confidence, and achieve the kind of growth that lasts a lifetime. Before he was a coach, Travis Wallace was a competitor. As a Division 1 basketball player at the University of North Florida, Travis experienced firsthand the drive, discipline, and mental toughness required to excel. But like many high performers, he faced an identity crisis after his playing days ended. Instead of staying stuck, he chose reinvention. Travis went on to become a personal strength coach for NBA Champion Kyle Lowry, an achievement that reflected his rise to the top of his field. However, even with this career-defining role, Travis realized something deeper: success without growth is empty. That realization marked the start of his ultimate reinvention—not just for himself, but for others. A fresh new format featuring a coaching conversation with Host Matt Dixon and Co-Host Max Gering. This Valentine's Day, we explore how athletes can integrate sport into life in a way that strengthens relationships rather than strains them—because true performance isn't just about results, it's about the bigger picture. IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon and Purple Patch Coach Max Gering discuss the importance of integrating sport into life sustainably, especially for athletes with busy schedules. They emphasize the need for effective training that fits within one's life, rather than overloading with long rides every weekend. They highlight the significance of communication with partners and family, planning together, and ensuring sport enhances life rather than compromising it. Practical tips include the "Sunday special" for reflection and planning, and making training a family activity. They stress that consistent, effective training over time leads to better performance and overall well-being, rather than focusing solely on training hours. Jordan shares how a culture focused on delivering commitments—rather than chasing every shiny object—keeps his team on track. Jared adds that defining goals as an “X on the map” gives everyone direction. This clarity cuts down on the stress of constantly shifting focus and ensures resources are used wisely to deliver consistent results.Sustain performance with predictable systems and routines. “Understanding who you are and what your inner voice tells you can redefine your truth and your actions.” - Sherry When it comes to healing and overcoming any challenge, your self-image plays a crucial role in shaping your beliefs and behaviors. And your success. Your limits are ultimately defined by your own unconscious beliefs. In this episode of the podcast I talk about how important it is to adopt what I call the “Athlete Mindset.” When you view yourself from the perspective of an Athlete, the “why” behind your goals completely changes. I know, I know. You're thinking: Sherry, I can never see myself as an Athlete. An Athlete is someone who is really good at their sport, and plays professionally. I hear this all the time. And if this is what came up for you when I tell you to start seeing yourself as an Athlete, then you have to tune in today's episode. Once you shift this way of thinking, the magic happens. Topics Covered 0:00 - Transforming Self-Image Through Fitness and Athletic Mindset 7:19 - Questioning Medical Authority and Trusting Intuition in Healing 9:50 - Ignoring Body Signals Leads to Severe Back Injury 14:01 - Transforming Pain Into Purpose Through Fitness and Mindset 22:08 - Adapting CrossFit for Everyday Athletes with Safety in Mind 26:49 - Consistency and Curiosity in Building Sustainable Fitness Habits 31:21 - Breaking Free from Diet Culture and Embracing Intuitive Eating Key Takeaways: Embracing an athlete's mindset involves focusing on lifestyle quality, not just physical appearance. Consistency and small incremental changes are more effective in maintaining long-term fitness habits. Understanding personal body cues and intuitive eating and movement are crucial components for overcoming a disordered relationship with food and exercise and finding balance. Personal struggles can serve as a foundation for greater empathy and more meaningful connections with others. "Someone watching this may say what a little Bi*%h...and that's fine, a bad day for the ego is a good day for the soul." Today's conversation is a little different and by different we mean even better. So often we sit with our guests who open up, share their experiences for us all to take something away from it...but today, we shed our armor and allow our vulnerable sides to come through as we listen, learn and create a space for others like ourselves to be vulnerable too. Many times as men, especially athletes, we are instilled with a mentality that toughness means never showing emotion, fear or weakness. And while that can be true when playing a sport, working towards a milestone or competing for championships, it's not always the best approach with our personal and everyday lives. To help guide this discussion, Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with 2x New York Times bestselling author and top podcast host of The School of Greatness, Lewis Howes, also a former two-sport All-American athlete, as he shares the different seasons of his life, lessons learned along the way and how he pivoted from darker times to the top of podcast and book charts. But how did he get there? How did he convert his athlete mentality into motivation and transition fears into finding success in unlikely areas? What wisdom can he share with Pivot listeners and how can his words help us? Intrigued from the start....Ryan, Channing and Fred dive into a life changing conversation they never knew they needed to have. With over 1700 episodes and impactful conversations with elite athletes, entertainers, entrepreneurs and health and wellness experts, Lewis has set the tone in this space creating awareness, implementing techniques and he shares how his time spent with Kobe Bryant was the most impactful experience which helped shape his purpose in podcasting. Everybody experiences trauma, but not everybody learns to respond to hard experiences with a growth mindset. From sexual abuse growing up to a brother in prison, parents divorcing and a father who was in a coma for months after a serious car accident, Lewis has gone on a mission to share his story, help others deal with their traumas while exploring fears, masculinity, relationships and understanding emotions. At the end of the day, it's ok not to be ok and be open on our feelings, thoughts and struggles. Being honest, the four men acknowledge that conversations like these don't happen enough (filmed or not filmed) and towards the end of the episode, Lewis takes a moment to ask Ryan, Channing and Fred about themselves and the bond each has with one another while encouraging each other to share what they see as strengths and weaknesses in their everyday lives. The three guys have a tough conversation and hold each other accountable for things they see and share their hopes for one another while dealing with some tough emotions and real-life moments. Extremely powerful as each opens up and we are drawn in as if we are a part of the conversation. "It's a lot to unpack...this is deep."
