They explore whether technology has been beneficial, how it has changed the game, and the best ways to utilize these tools effectively. Joining the conversation is Travis Allison, co-founder of GoCamp.pro, who shares valuable insights on managing staff communication, engaging with parents, and teaching campers about responsible technology use. This episode emphasizes the importance of using emails over social media, creating comprehensive resources like a parent hub, and leveraging AI for better communication. Tune in for practical tips and thoughtful discussion on making technology work for your camp.-We hope you love this episode of Camp Code! Too often, directors and leadership staff take on tasks that seem necessary or cost-effective in the moment but, in reality, pull them away from higher-impact work. Whether it's managing social media, designing a website, plowing snow, or covering lifeguard shifts, these tasks may feel productive—but are they really the best use of your time?A simple way to assess this is by determining how much your time costs the organization. When you break down your salary into an hourly rate, you start to see your work through a different lens. That perspective can be a game-changer when deciding where to focus your efforts. If you wouldn't pay someone that hourly rate to complete a low-return task, why should the camp pay for your time to do it?By recognizing the true value of your time, you can make more informed decisions about what to take on and what to delegate. It's not just about working harder—it's about working smarter to ensure your efforts bring the greatest benefit to your camp and its mission.Resource:Click the link to access the GoCamp.Pro USELetter Special Guest:Travis Allison, Co-Founder - Go Camp Pro-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…BowlineHQCamp Leaders: Win back your time to what matters most, your campers. Welcome to part two of evaluations we covered options and now we're moving onto creating a vision and putting things into action.- We hope you love this episode of Camp Code! If you do, please consider subscribing to the show, and leaving us a rating in your Podcast app. It's SO easy, just head to https://ratethispodcast.com/campcode-Best Practice for Leadership TrainingFrom Travis Thank you so much. I have two main points. The first is about a structured communication format that I've been developing to enhance how we approach sending out information. It emphasizes understanding what motivates parents, staff, rental group contacts, and other stakeholders to *open*, *read*, *absorb*, *act on*, and *share* the messages they receive. This structure can simplify communication, whether for big changes or small updates. One of the key changes I hope we make is to be intentional in our communication. By using the "open, read, absorb, act, and share" framework, we can break down complex messages into manageable parts. This approach makes it easier to both plan and measure the impact of our communications. The second point relates to organizing tasks, particularly for those of us with ADHD, where breaking down projects into steps is critical. It's common in roles like emergency services and camp management to find people who thrive in fast-paced settings but may struggle with complex planning due to ADHD. I recommend a tool called Goblin Tools. If you're taking on a large or daunting project, this tool allows you to enter the project title or key concept, and it automatically breaks it down into actionable steps. This not only makes tasks less overwhelming but also helps in delegating or prioritizing effectively. Sometimes, the simple act of breaking down a complex task can be the key to making real progress. -Special Guest: Travis Allison, Co-Founder of GoCamp.Pro - Go Camp Pro-Your Hosts:Beth Allison, Camp Consultant - Go Camp ProRuby Compton, Chief Exploration Officer - Ruby OutdoorsGabrielle Raill, Camp Director - Camp Ouareau-Thanks to our sponsors…UltraCampImagine camp registration software that actually gives you MORE time for what you love - CAMP! "The most effective way to get campers this summer is to get last summer's campers to come back."On this episode, Travis Allison from Go Camp Pro joins us to talk through what's actually effective in recruiting and retaining campers and their families. Built from a sense of frustration that so many camp leaders spend so much time, energy, and money on things that don't work, the Camper Recruitment & Retention Playbook by Travis Allison and Joanna Warren Smith lays out why, and most importantly how, to get campers and keep them coming back through clear, effective communication and intentionally improved experience.Plus, we've got a Quick Qamp Question answered from Jake and Travis' decades of camp experience on the strategic focus of staff versus camper experience, and an eye-opening Stat of the Week on professional leadership turnover from the Foundation on Jewish Camps. There's a lot of neuroscience research that as soon as we perceive we are needed by a community, we are then much more connected to that community. Travis talked about the power of being seen. That’s what hiring for Summer 2021 is all about! If you haven’t listened to the four-part mini-series devoted to our camp professionals helping YOU, you should go back and have a listen! This is the first episode after the mini-series and the timing of our hosts could not be more on point. In this episode, it is all about preparing for the hectic hiring season that is quickly approaching us, especially in these uncertain times. There are still a lot of specifics that our camps, regulators and government need to iron out, given the global pandemic. Now camp leaders have more contingency planning to do than ever before. If you’re struggling to figure out how to start, how to manage the waves of emotions that come with the pandemic, then this episode is absolutely for you. Our hosts, Beth, Gabrielle and Ruby dive into how you can go forward, do the interview process and help navigate your hiring for the 2021 summer. Ruby reminds us about the rapidly changing news with new scientific evidence and rumours of a vaccine on the way, we need to adapt. Some suggestions presented are virtual programming to prepare your staff, developing a safety guide decision tree and as always, over-communicate. The more information you can share, the better prepared your recruits will be. Speaking about a vaccine, Beth reminds us about the inevitable truth that some camps simply may not be able to run until a vaccine is available and camp staff and campers have received the vaccine. From knowing what considerations to think about and what decisions are needed to run camp successfully in a pandemic world, Beth brings us another great resource the Covid Slack, developed my GoCamp.Pro’s very own Travis Allison. Covid Slack https://zoic.ca/covid-slackGabrielle brings up a great idea about using the alumni staff on standby to run a life wellness session for potential staff. Look at Alumi and their professions to see how it can develop the competencies of your staff and their core. Gabrielle also reminds us that staffing this year will be harder this year as we tackle the unknown of the pandemic, so how about you gets your returning staff to identify what they love about working at camp, what life lessons kids and learn and what would they like to keep or change at camp. Work smarter, not harder and use this information to help you develop your 2021 summer camp program! -We hope you love this episode of Camp Code!
