What makes some people bounce back from adversity while others remain stuck? In this compelling episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, host Peter Winick welcomes resilience expert Deborah Gilboa. An author and consultant, Deborah helps organizations navigate change with confidence and competence. Her book, From Stressed to Resilient: The Guide to Handle More and Feel It Less, serves as a roadmap for individuals and teams seeking to enhance their resilience. Deborah's journey to thought leadership is as unconventional as her path to medicine. Initially pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a career in theater, she pivoted to medical school, where she spent years treating patients. Observing the stark differences in how individuals responded to illness prompted her to delve into the concept of "Patient Resilience." She aimed to redefine resilience beyond severe cases, exploring its application in everyday lives and discovering whether it can be cultivated. Transitioning from a practicing doctor to a thought leader began when Deborah was asked to speak about parenting at community events. What started as a way to connect with underserved populations evolved into a mission to educate parents, educators, and coaches about fostering resilience. As the inquiries grew, so did her focus on adult resilience, leading her to investigate effective methods for teaching these essential skills to adults facing their struggles. Deborah's business model centers on writing and speaking engagements. Recognizing the need for a platform, she built her online presence and leveraged her speaking skills to gain credibility. Companies often approach her to address change resistance within their teams. Through tailored workshops and a "Change Resistant Exam," she equips leadership with the tools to facilitate smoother transitions, ultimately fostering a culture of adaptability. Deborah's insights are vital for any organization looking to thrive in a rapidly changing environment. Three Key Takeaways: • Resilience is Learnable: Deborah emphasizes that resilience is not merely an innate trait; it can be cultivated and developed over time. Understanding what contributes to resilience can empower individuals and organizations to enhance their ability to navigate challenges. • Effective Communication is Crucial in Change Management: Organizations often struggle with change due to a lack of understanding of the natural resistance employees exhibit. Deborah teaches leaders how to communicate effectively about changes, ensuring that expectations are clear and that employees feel supported throughout the transition. • Speaking Engagements as a Gateway: Deborah's journey into thought leadership illustrates the power of speaking engagements. They serve as an entry point for organizations to experience her insights firsthand, ultimately leading to longer-term consulting relationships focused on building a resilient workforce. Doborah shares her journey of learning the need for a strong platform to leverage her skills and show credibility.  If you are struggling to build your platform we can help!  Contact the Thought Leadership Leverage team about a strategy session to take your first steps.

Amid a mental health crisis, toy industry takes on a new role: building resilience

As more children emerge from the pandemic grappling with mental health issues, their parents are seeking ways for them to build emotional resilience. And toy companies are paying close attention. While still in its early phase, a growing number of toy marketers are embracing MESH—or mental, emotional, and social health—as a designation for toys that teach kids skills, like how to adjust to new challenges, resolve conflict, advocate for themselves, or solve problems. The acronym was first used in child development circles and by the American Camp Association 10 years ago and gained new resonance after the pandemic. Rachele Harmuth, head of ThinkFun, a division of toy company Ravensburger, and resilience expert and family physician Deborah Gilboa, formed a MESH task force earlier this year with the goal of getting manufacturers to design toys with emotional resilience in mind and to have retailers market them accordingly. “We just need to educate parents and educators just a little bit to know that we could be using their playtime a little bit intentionally,” Gilboa said. Many toys that could be considered MESH happen to already be in children's toy chests—like memory games, puppets, certain types of Legos, Pokémon trading games, and Dungeons & Dragons. But some worry the MESH approach might end up promising parents something it can't deliver. There's also a risk of companies preying on parents' anxieties about their kids' mental health. “My fear is that MESH will be used as the next marketing gimmick,” said Chris Byrne, an independent toy analyst. “It will create a culture of fear that their children are not developing socially and emotionally. And that's not really the job of the toy industry.” Dave Anderson, vice president of school and community programs and a senior psychologist in the ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute, applauded the toy industry's efforts to likewise address emotional resilience. But he said parents need to be careful about claims that companies may be making. While there's evidence that skills highlighted by the MESH taskforce can build resilience, there's no evidence that the toys themselves will, he said. When we're navigating something new or have a big decision ahead of us, we often stall at making a choice. Known for her contagious humor, Dr. G works with people across generations to rewire their attitudes and beliefs to create resilience through personal accountability and a completely different approach to adversity. She is the author of the recently released book From Stressed to Resilient: The Guide to Handle More and Feel It Less. Dr. G is a board-certified attending family physician at a community health center whose practice includes making house calls. As a child, Dr. G suffered from seizures. When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” her answer was a pediatric neurosurgeon since she had a female doctor in that specialty who she liked. Dr. G changed her mind, when in 9th grade biology lab, she had to dissect a fetal pig. Around that time she discovered the fun of theater, finding social acceptance and learning that people can have careers in theater. She decided to study theater in college. After earning her BFA in stage management, Dr. G worked in theater for six years, including two years at Second City, the famous improv company in Chicago. She also volunteered as an emergency medical technician and got certified as a paramedic. At 26, Dr. G decided to apply to medical school, but she needed two years of pre-requisite coursework to qualify. She mapped out a plan to ensure she could make it happen. Dr. G had also worked at Deaf West Theater in Los Angeles, founded by the deaf actress Marlee Matlin. She had learned some American Sign Language (ASL) and a lot about deaf culture. Dr. G heard that ASL interpreters were needed in health care, so she enrolled in ASL classes and began to work as an ASL interpreter while she prepared for medical school. Today, Dr. G practices family medicine on a part-time basis and speaks regularly to audiences in every sector on a variety of topics pertaining to resilience, mental health, and effective communication. On this episode of Come Rain or Shine, Dr. Deborah Gilboa, media personality and keynote speaker, joins the show to discuss the best ways to cope with stress. A board-certified family physician fluent in sign language, Dr. Gilboa is recognized as one of the most influential voices not only regarding stress management but embracing resilience. Equipped with a simple message, she has a knack for breaking down complicated emotions by compartmentalizing the processing behind them. For instance, before one can deal with anxiety or grief, one must accept accompanying senses of loss, distrust, and discomfort. As Dr. Gilboa submits, the irony of conquering stress is embracing it through resilience and navigating it with a mission focus. While you can't shut off the medulla, you can subdue it by remembering the choices you have in front of you. The most important thing to remember when building resilience, according to Dr. G, is empathy. It's important to allow yourself the room to feel the stress of the change, validate those feelings, and then act. Dr. G also explains why we shouldn't always trust our gut, but rather ask questions before making a judgment. What is stress?Brené Brown, author of Atlas of the Heart (a book we are obsessed with), says that:We feel stressed when we evaluate environmental demand as beyond our ability to cope successfully. This includes elements of unpredictability, uncontrollability, and feeling overloaded.Stress seems to be an inevitable part of our lives. Some people feel they can cope with the demands of life relatively quickly, while others feel they are constantly under stress and struggle to keep up. When we feel like we can't handle what's going on around us, the result is often anxiety, worry, and a feeling of uncertainty which can profoundly impact our health. Fortunately, there are several things we can do to address the problem of stress in our lives and reclaim our happiness. Luckily, Dr. Deborah Gilboa is back to share how we can transform stress into a more positive thing to our own advantage. Yes, you've heard that right! Stress can be a positive thing for us if we manage it properly. For Dr. Deborah, stress management is essential for everyone because it actually helps build our resilience. Episode Summary Welcome back to the second season of the Erica Diamond Podcast! I recently saw Dr. G speak in Montreal on how to raise resilient children, and I was truly captivated. She's both exceptionally knowledgeable, and extremely relatable, which you will come to hear throughout our interview.  Hear how we can foster resilience at home AND in the workplace. Know when to rescue our kids, and when to hang them out to dry! Dr. G will walk us through it all. In This Episode How Dr. G decided to become a doctor and resilience expert.  How we can raise resilient children who are able to handle failure and can come back and thrive.  Dr. G speaks to the difficult line of knowing when to help them or rescue our kids, and when to hang them out to dry. When we do help, and when do we back off?  How to raise independent kids. Dr. G often talks about teaching responsibility and good work ethic. Does that come into play here when raising independent kids? Dr. G's book is, 'Get the behavior you want without being the parent you hate!' Erica Diamond tells Dr. G she sometimes hates the sound of my her own voice to her kids. How do we get that good behavior the first time around? Kids are stressed out today. And frankly so are parents. How can we coach our kids (and ourselves) to help bring down the fire?  How we can talk to our kids about issues like sex, their sexuality, porn, drinking, vaping, alcohol. It's a lot, no doubt. Dr. G breaks it down. Things we can do to help boost our children's self esteem? On social media rules, boundaries and parameters. Erica asks Dr. G, "Should we have passwords to their social accounts and at what age, when do we leave them to manage social media on their own and do we spot check?" Erica is big believer in teaching your kids the rules, guiding them, supporting them, and then letting them loose, to go and mess up, with natural consequences as teachable moments as they go. Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. As a parent I struggle with this with my kid. When I see him hurt, or about to get hurt, I want to make it better. We all want to make it better. But are we making it worse by always running to our kids and trying to protect them from everything? By doing this we are not teaching them to be resilient. We aren't teaching them to bounce back. We aren't teaching them to problem solve and to be ready for the inevitable downturns ahead. Today on Episode 36 we bring on parenting expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa to teach us more about this important topic of resilience. Topics discussed on this show: Introduction to Dr. G and her passion for teaching resilience. What is resilience at relates to kids and parents? Why is it so important to teach kids to be resilient?Strategies to help build more resilient kids. The concept of empathy and how this relates to resilience. Is there such think as tough love, what does this mean?Teaching resilience to anxious children. Success in high school starts years earlier - so this is a show for parents with kids of all ages. Kids often tell their parent that life is so much more stressful today than in the past. And  you know what? There's some truth to their feelings! The reality is that kids today have different stresses. And the stakes that are involved are much, much highter. In today’s show, we explore the world of today’s high school teenager with “Dr. G” – Dr. Deborah Gilboa, a board certified family physician, mom of four and professional parenting speaker. Dr. G. helps us understand some of the critical roles parents still need to be providing children during the high school years. She talks about how many parents feel of loss of “empowerment” and what can be done about it! She provides practical advice on giving children more privileges as they take on obligations and demonstrate maturity. And most importantly, she talks about the importance of communication and respect during the high school years – and why it’s so much easier to have strong communication when parents build respectful communication with their children when they are younger. This show is full of great, practical advice for parents of kids from tots to tweens. Join in. Class is in session! References from this Podcast: Deborah Gilboa's Website
