What does it take to lead when the plan breaks, the pressure spikes, and failure is part of the mission? In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Peter Winick talks with Colonel (Ret.) Merryl Tengesdal, author of "Shatter the Sky: What going to the stratosphere taught me about self-worth, sacrifice, and discipline" about the ideas that drive her work today: adaptability, resilience, authentic leadership, and the courage to keep moving when the outcome is uncertain. Her message is clear. Success is never a straight line. The leaders who thrive are the ones who learn to adjust in real time. Merryl brings a powerful framework to the conversation. She treats leadership like flying. You prepare well. You know the mission. But you also stay alert, read the conditions, and make smart adjustments when reality changes. That perspective makes her thought leadership practical for executives, team leaders, and organizations facing constant pressure to perform. She also makes a compelling case for rethinking failure. Not as a verdict. Not as an identity. But as part of the process of building something meaningful. Merryl challenges the idea that top performers avoid setbacks. Instead, she shows that real growth comes from how leaders respond when things do not go according to plan. What makes this conversation stand out is Merryl's ability to turn high-stakes experience into usable insight. She does not rely on polished theory. She speaks with clarity, candor, and conviction about what it means to lead under pressure, recover from disappointment, and stay focused on the larger mission. That is what gives her message relevance far beyond aviation or the military. Peter and Merryl also explore the role of story in leadership. Merryl explains why great speaking is not performance for its own sake. It is an act of connection. It is how leaders help people see themselves differently, think more clearly, and take the next step forward. Her approach to keynote speaking is grounded in authenticity, not persona, and that is exactly why it resonates. This episode is a strong listen for anyone building a thought leadership platform around leadership, culture, resilience, or performance. Merryl's work reminds us that strong leaders do not promise perfect conditions. They help people navigate uncertainty with discipline, perspective, and purpose. Three Key Takeaways: • Adaptability matters more than perfect plans. Strong leaders prepare well, but they also adjust in real time when conditions change. • Failure is part of growth, not proof of defeat. Setbacks are inevitable. What matters is how you respond, stay persistent, and keep moving forward. • Great leadership connects through authentic storytelling. The most effective messages are grounded in real experience and help people see challenges, decisions, and opportunities differently. If this episode resonated with you, listen to Deborah Gilboa's next. Both conversations center on resilience, adaptability, and what it takes to lead when the path is uncertain. Merryl's episode shows why flexibility, failure, and real-time decision-making matter. Deborah's builds on that by showing leaders how resilience can be developed, how to manage change more effectively, and how to help teams move through resistance instead of getting stuck in it. You'll come away with practical insight on leading through change with more confidence, clarity, and competence.

What makes some people bounce back from adversity while others remain stuck? In this compelling episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, host Peter Winick welcomes resilience expert Deborah Gilboa. An author and consultant, Deborah helps organizations navigate change with confidence and competence. Her book, From Stressed to Resilient: The Guide to Handle More and Feel It Less, serves as a roadmap for individuals and teams seeking to enhance their resilience. Deborah's journey to thought leadership is as unconventional as her path to medicine. Initially pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a career in theater, she pivoted to medical school, where she spent years treating patients. Observing the stark differences in how individuals responded to illness prompted her to delve into the concept of "Patient Resilience." She aimed to redefine resilience beyond severe cases, exploring its application in everyday lives and discovering whether it can be cultivated. Transitioning from a practicing doctor to a thought leader began when Deborah was asked to speak about parenting at community events. What started as a way to connect with underserved populations evolved into a mission to educate parents, educators, and coaches about fostering resilience. As the inquiries grew, so did her focus on adult resilience, leading her to investigate effective methods for teaching these essential skills to adults facing their struggles. Deborah's business model centers on writing and speaking engagements. Recognizing the need for a platform, she built her online presence and leveraged her speaking skills to gain credibility. Companies often approach her to address change resistance within their teams. Through tailored workshops and a "Change Resistant Exam," she equips leadership with the tools to facilitate smoother transitions, ultimately fostering a culture of adaptability. Deborah's insights are vital for any organization looking to thrive in a rapidly changing environment. Three Key Takeaways: • Resilience is Learnable: Deborah emphasizes that resilience is not merely an innate trait; it can be cultivated and developed over time. Understanding what contributes to resilience can empower individuals and organizations to enhance their ability to navigate challenges. • Effective Communication is Crucial in Change Management: Organizations often struggle with change due to a lack of understanding of the natural resistance employees exhibit. Deborah teaches leaders how to communicate effectively about changes, ensuring that expectations are clear and that employees feel supported throughout the transition. • Speaking Engagements as a Gateway: Deborah's journey into thought leadership illustrates the power of speaking engagements. They serve as an entry point for organizations to experience her insights firsthand, ultimately leading to longer-term consulting relationships focused on building a resilient workforce. Doborah shares her journey of learning the need for a strong platform to leverage her skills and show credibility.  If you are struggling to build your platform we can help!  Contact the Thought Leadership Leverage team about a strategy session to take your first steps.

Amid a mental health crisis, toy industry takes on a new role: building resilience

As more children emerge from the pandemic grappling with mental health issues, their parents are seeking ways for them to build emotional resilience. And toy companies are paying close attention. While still in its early phase, a growing number of toy marketers are embracing MESH—or mental, emotional, and social health—as a designation for toys that teach kids skills, like how to adjust to new challenges, resolve conflict, advocate for themselves, or solve problems. The acronym was first used in child development circles and by the American Camp Association 10 years ago and gained new resonance after the pandemic. Rachele Harmuth, head of ThinkFun, a division of toy company Ravensburger, and resilience expert and family physician Deborah Gilboa, formed a MESH task force earlier this year with the goal of getting manufacturers to design toys with emotional resilience in mind and to have retailers market them accordingly. “We just need to educate parents and educators just a little bit to know that we could be using their playtime a little bit intentionally,” Gilboa said. Many toys that could be considered MESH happen to already be in children's toy chests—like memory games, puppets, certain types of Legos, Pokémon trading games, and Dungeons & Dragons. But some worry the MESH approach might end up promising parents something it can't deliver. There's also a risk of companies preying on parents' anxieties about their kids' mental health. “My fear is that MESH will be used as the next marketing gimmick,” said Chris Byrne, an independent toy analyst. “It will create a culture of fear that their children are not developing socially and emotionally. And that's not really the job of the toy industry.” Dave Anderson, vice president of school and community programs and a senior psychologist in the ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute, applauded the toy industry's efforts to likewise address emotional resilience. But he said parents need to be careful about claims that companies may be making. While there's evidence that skills highlighted by the MESH taskforce can build resilience, there's no evidence that the toys themselves will, he said. When we're navigating something new or have a big decision ahead of us, we often stall at making a choice. Dr. G is a board-certified attending family physician at a community health center whose practice includes making house calls. As a child, Dr. G suffered from seizures. When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” her answer was a pediatric neurosurgeon since she had a female doctor in that specialty who she liked. Dr. G changed her mind, when in 9th grade biology lab, she had to dissect a fetal pig. Around that time she discovered the fun of theater, finding social acceptance and learning that people can have careers in theater. She decided to study theater in college. After earning her BFA in stage management, Dr. G worked in theater for six years, including two years at Second City, the famous improv company in Chicago. She also volunteered as an emergency medical technician and got certified as a paramedic. At 26, Dr. G decided to apply to medical school, but she needed two years of pre-requisite coursework to qualify. She mapped out a plan to ensure she could make it happen. Dr. G had also worked at Deaf West Theater in Los Angeles, founded by the deaf actress Marlee Matlin. She had learned some American Sign Language (ASL) and a lot about deaf culture. Dr. G heard that ASL interpreters were needed in health care, so she enrolled in ASL classes and began to work as an ASL interpreter while she prepared for medical school. Today, Dr. G practices family medicine on a part-time basis and speaks regularly to audiences in every sector on a variety of topics pertaining to resilience, mental health, and effective communication. She says, “Resilience is not given… it is choice and action.” In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Dr. G's journey: Dr. G's message is straightforward and essential: Do stress better. Be resilient.  She appears regularly on TODAY, Good Morning America, and The Doctors. Her work is featured frequently in the Washington Post, The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, and many other digital and print outlets. How can you reframe stress and use it to build your resilience? Dr. Deborah Gilboa is on a mission to transform how people think about stress and change so they can accomplish what they need to in the world. She is a resilience expert who works with families, educators, executives, and businesses to identify the mindset and strategies to turn stress to an advantage. Known to many as Dr. G, she is a board-certified attending family physician and a leading media personality seen regularly on TODAY, Good Morning America and is the Resilience Expert for The Doctors. She is also featured frequently in the Washington Post, The New York Times, Huffington Post, and many other media outlets. Today we're going to discuss her new book, From Stressed To Resilient – the guide to handle more and feel it less. Why our brains hate change, the truth about stress, and eight key skills to build resilience in your life and career. Dr. G has used these principles with her patients and in helping turn around hundreds of organizations including a group of banks that were suffering from a high staff turnover and a major construction company that was imploding from a lack of loyalty. To replace one of your employees' costs 2-3 times their annual salary. Bleeding talent leads to bleeding cash.  Teaching your people to move from stressed to resilient stops this from happening and leads to greater productivity, happiness, loyalty and profitability. Listen as Dr. G shows us how! What We Discuss in this Episode What is stress Why we only need leaders when there is change Why change is so uncomfortable Reframing change for your employees Why adversity alone doesn't guarantee resilience 8 key skills for building resilience G's favorite skill that she would love everyone to know The good news about the resilience cycle Why the “just get through it” approach is not enough How building connections increases our resilience The importance of laughter in handling stress and change The #1 thing leaders can do when asking their team to make a decision Full Episode Show Notes: https://leadersoftransformation.com/podcast/health/434-from-stressed-to-resilient-with-dr-deborah-gilboa/

On this episode of Come Rain or Shine, Dr. Deborah Gilboa, media personality and keynote speaker, joins the show to discuss the best ways to cope with stress. A board-certified family physician fluent in sign language, Dr. Gilboa is recognized as one of the most influential voices not only regarding stress management but embracing resilience. Equipped with a simple message, she has a knack for breaking down complicated emotions by compartmentalizing the processing behind them. For instance, before one can deal with anxiety or grief, one must accept accompanying senses of loss, distrust, and discomfort. As Dr. Gilboa submits, the irony of conquering stress is embracing it through resilience and navigating it with a mission focus. While you can't shut off the medulla, you can subdue it by remembering the choices you have in front of you. The most important thing to remember when building resilience, according to Dr. G, is empathy. It's important to allow yourself the room to feel the stress of the change, validate those feelings, and then act. Dr. G also explains why we shouldn't always trust our gut, but rather ask questions before making a judgment.
