In this episode, I sit down with Amy Barry to unpack the lessons she's learned throughout her career in Retail Marketing and she shares insights that are valuable no matter where you are in your own journey.Amy's career took a major turn when she said yes to what seemed like a short-term opportunity, a three-month contract at The Good Guys. That decision ended up shaping the next decade of her career, allowing her to gain invaluable experience and work her way up the corporate ladder. From there, she spent nearly five years at Spotlight Retail Group before making the jump to the supplier side in her current Head of Marketing role. We dive into what those transitions taught her about taking risks, advocating for herself, and stepping into leadership roles before feeling 100% 'ready.'One of the biggest game-changers in her career? A lightbulb moment during DISC Behavioural Model training that completely shifted how she worked with her team and managed up. Amy shares how this understanding of different work styles transformed her leadership approach and deepened her relationships at work.We also discuss the influence of great (and not-so-great) leaders in shaping her own management style and how she continues to evolve as a leader. And finally, we wrap up with a conversation about the power of dreaming bigThis episode is packed with career wisdom, real talk, and some seriously valuable takeaways. How can we navigate parenting, relationships, and emotional growth in a world filled with challenges? In this heartfelt episode of Father and Joe, Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks dive deep into the art of parenting, emotional resilience, and building meaningful relationships. Drawing from personal experiences, psychological insights, and spiritual perspectives, they discuss topics that resonate with parents, couples, and anyone seeking to strengthen their connections with loved ones and with God.Joe begins with a personal parenting story about his son, who experienced a small but meaningful injury, sparking reflections on the importance of communication and emotional understanding in relationships. “A lot of times we don't know the right question to ask,” Joe observes, echoing a theme we all face in our daily interactions. How do we truly understand others, or even teach our children to ask the right questions? Joe's story sets the stage for Father Boniface to offer wisdom on navigating life's challenges with empathy and faith.Father Boniface shares a powerful insight: “Trauma happens not so much from the pain itself, but from being alone in the pain.” Using an example from Bonnie Badenoch's The Heart of Trauma, he illustrates the crucial role of secure relationships in helping children—and adults—process difficult emotions. Whether it's a preschooler overwhelmed by the world or an adult navigating relational pain, the message is clear: connection and validation are key to healing.Joe and Father Boniface also explore the delicate balance of parenting. Joe reflects on the fear many parents feel: “What if I mess up when it matters most?” Father Boniface reassures listeners with the concept of “good enough parenting,” emphasizing the importance of building resilience and secure attachments. “It's not about getting everything perfect,” Father Boniface explains, “but about teaching repair mechanisms and showing your children they're never alone.”From parenting challenges to fostering emotional curiosity in relationships, the conversation expands to explore the universal desire for better connections. “Relationships thrive when we seek to understand, not just to answer,” says Father Boniface, encouraging us all to develop empathy and wisdom in our interactions.Whether you're a parent worried about making the "right" decisions, a spouse striving to improve communication, or simply someone seeking more fulfillment in relationships, this episode offers invaluable insights rooted in faith and humanity. As always, Joe and Father Boniface invite listeners to join the conversation:

Chapter 1:Summary of Radical Candor"Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity" is a book written by Kim Scott, published in 2017. The book presents a guide to effective leadership that emphasizes the importance of direct but empathetic communication. The central concept of Radical Candor is built upon the balance of two key behaviors: care personally and challenge directly. Scott argues that by combining these behaviors, managers can achieve a management style she terms "Radical Candor," which allows for open and honest communication while fostering strong interpersonal relationships. The book identifies two axes to form a quadrant:1. Care Personally: This involves taking an interest in employees as human beings with lives outside of work, showing empathy and understanding.2. Challenge Directly: This involves providing clear and direct feedback about work-related issues in a timely and constructive manner, even when it may be uncomfortable. The quadrant divides into four management styles:1. Radical Candor (High Care, High Challenge): The ideal management style. Leaders express that they care personally and challenge directly, fostering an environment of respect and open communication.2. Ruinous Empathy (High Care, Low Challenge): Managers care personally but fail to challenge directly, leading to poor work habits and confusion among team members due to a lack of clear feedback.3. Obnoxious Aggression (Low Care, High Challenge): Managers challenge directly but do not show that they care personally. This can often lead to resentment and a lack of respect among team members.4. Manipulative Insincerity (Low Care, Low Challenge): The least effective style, where managers neither show personal care nor challenge directly, resulting in a disingenuous and toxic work environment.Scott provides practical advice on how leaders can cultivate Radical Candor, including techniques for giving effective feedback, understanding each team member's personal motivations, and creating a culture of open communication. The book also tackles various challenges and pitfalls leaders might face and offers solutions on navigating through them.Overall, "Radical Candor" is considered a valuable resource for anyone in a leadership position aiming to foster a productive, collaborative, and positive work environment. It stresses that the key to good leadership lies in building genuine relationships combined with a commitment to direct communication.Chapter 2:The Theme of Radical Candor"Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity" by Kim Scott focuses on leadership and management strategies rather than a narrative plot. Below are key points regarding its core content, including major themes and advice for personal and professional development: Key Plot PointsSince "Radical Candor" is not a narrative book but a guide, it doesn't have plot points but is structured around key principles for effective management:1. Concept of Radical Candor: Scott introduces Radical Candor as the ability to challenge directly and show you care personally at the same time. This concept is central to developing sound relationships in the workplace.2. Caring Personally and Challenging Directly: These are the two dimensions that define Radical Candor. Scott emphasizes that great bosses must do both simultaneously to be successful in their roles.3. Quadrants of Interaction: Scott describes four quadrants of interaction based on varying degrees of personal care and direct challenge:- Radical Candor (high care, high challenge)- Obnoxious Aggression (low care, high challenge)- Ruinous Empathy (high care, low challenge)- Manipulative Insincerity (low care, low challenge)4. Examples and Strategies: The book is filled with various strategies for...

Much is made of what law firms can and must do to support their clients. But what of the client itself? Here, we explore the responsibility of law departments to create and maintain better relationships with their external providers. In this episode of The Corporate Counsel Show, host Jerome Doraisamy welcomes back Cognetic Legal & Consulting founder and principal Damien Sullivan to discuss why it is so important for law departments to ensure their clients want to remain on their legal services panels, the things law firms are looking out for from their clients at this juncture, and how and why law firms should be comfortable providing constructive criticism and feedback where necessary. Sullivan also reflects on how front of mind such concerns are for law departments right now and how high a priority it should be, some of the things that those departments are currently getting wrong, the need to strip things back to basics and get the fundamentals right, and other practical steps that in-house teams can and must employ, as well as how those legal teams can better balance internal pressure against how they treat their external providers. Would you describe your preferred working style as dominating, influencing, steady, or conscientious? Maybe a blend of the two?The DiSC assessment can complement what you've learned about yourself through the Enneagram by sharing both validating insights and new perspectives about your preferences and tendencies. Like the Enneagram, it should be used for dialogue, not a diagnosis. To help us jumpstart that conversation and be able to use and apply the DiSC to our own personal growth journey and relationships at work, we have DiSC certified, leadership trainer, and owner of Talent and Genius, Nancy Marmolejo on the show today.Inside Part 4 of our Personality Assessment Series, you'll learn about what DiSC is and the 4 main styles within the framework: The D (Dominance) Style prioritizes getting immediate results, taking action, challenging themselves and others and is motivated by power and authority, competition, winning, and success (sound familiar Type 8s and 3s? :) )The i (Influence) Style prioritizes expressing enthusiasm, taking action, and encouraging collaboration and is motivated by social recognition, group activities, and friendly relationships (Type 7 anyone?))The S (Steadiness) Style prioritizes giving support, maintaining stability, and enjoying collaboration and is motivated by stable environments, sincere appreciation, cooperation, and opportunities to help (sensing some Type 2, 6, and 9 - What do you think?)The C (Conscientiousness) Style prioritizes ensuring accuracy, maintaining stability, and challenging assumptions, and is motivated by opportunities to use expertise or gain knowledge and attention to quality (hearing some Type 1 and event Type 5 in there?).The only Enneagram type I didn't see a direct DiSC Style correlation with was the Type 4 (which you probably appreciate :)), but what do you think? Where do you see this energy show up on the DiSC?And more importantly, where do you see yourself? In this month's podcast episode, Building Better Relationships at Home and Work with Angela and Patti, podcast co-host Angela Ambrosia will share how miracles have happened in her life and relationships and how she has studied the science of miracles through working on the power of our thoughts and how we talk to the powers that support us and which some people call god, the divine, grace and others may call the universe. For Angela, this is actually the power of our words. How can we control the words we use and send out into the world to transform our way of relating to physical matter, the people around us, and our own consciousness to manifest and allow miracles into our lives? More recently, Angela has had a miracle of Soma in her life, which is blessed sacred water manifesting in her home altar and also manifesting in special events happening globally. One is happening in her hometown, Sydney, Australia, on Dec 1, 2023, Perth, Australia, Dec 3, 2023, and Melbourne, Australia, Dec 8, 2023. When we take ourselves too seriously, we can snuff out the playful eros energy that keeps relationships vibrant and alive. After all, the happiest marriages thrive, rather than just survive. They are joyful because each person feels free to fully be themselves—without the need to pretend or contort themselves to earn approval. Making room for two people to be true to themselves and the relationship is where the real magic happens. I recently met with Dr. Jerry and Tammie Duggar of the Simple 7 Lifestyle Podcast to discuss how couples can find more happiness and a deeper sense of freedom in their relationships, and how the quality of our relationships impacts both our mental and physical health.

Everyone likes to feel heard and know that their voice matters. It can be in our jobs, careers, relationships, or family. We want to feel heard, seen, valued and understood. But, if we take a hard look, we will see some of the biggest failures or misunderstandings in our work life and personal relationships are because, plainly put, our communications skills suck. We can be saying exactly what we want, but the person we are telling it to, are they really listening? A person will hear what they want to hear and act on that. Bad decisions are made, and we stay in relationships we probably should not be in, resulting in an expensive, costly error that can be difficult to recover from or maybe even divorce. All that could have been avoided if we just invested in active listening. In this episode, employee engagement and loyalty expert Heather Younger discusses how you can build better relationships and improve communication professionally and personally through active listening. We talk about:  The impact of  not listening  Saying things just to get along   The cycle of active listening    Listening does not mean agreeing    Unconscious bias and listening    It's more than just listening; you have to take action too and more...Get ready to build better relationships professionally and personally. Connect with Heather: https://heatheryounger.comConnect with Carolyn: https://carolyn360.com or use the code leader to meet Carolyn on the Owwll app - https://infinitycoaching.net/appleowwll
