“In 2022, Indonesia only consumed about 70,000 tonnes of wood for electricity. In 2023, we consumed almost half a million.”Alasdair speaks to Timer Manurung, Chairman of the Indonesian NGO Auriga Nusantara, about a new report he worked on with five other environmental charities. Titled Unheeded Warnings, the report warns that the Indonesian government's plans for biomass power risk harming 10 million hectares of untouched primary forest, and "the deforestation of an area roughly 35 times the size of Jakarta — resulting in CO2 emissions almost five hundred times higher than current levels.”Alasdair and Timer discuss the investigation process, the scale of these potential impacts, and the Indonesian Government. Today's episode marks International Day of Forests (March 21) by celebrating the 25th anniversary of a little-known but important US law: the Tropical Forest and Coral Reef Conservation Act, or TFCCA. At its core, the TFCCA was designed to facilitate debt-for-nature swaps, which enable developing countries to restructure the debt they owe to the US in a way that relieves their financial burden in exchange for redirecting a portion of the funds toward conservation. These swaps were conceptualized in the 1980s by Dr. Tom Lovejoy, WWF's first chief scientist, and proved to be remarkably successful and popular. Today's episode features a conversation with Esteban Brenes, WWF's senior director for conservation finance, about the history of debt-for-nature swaps (2:18), how conservation funds get disbursed under the TFCCA (4:25), and some examples of specific debt-for-nature swaps that have delivered results (8:01). Esteban also shares some lessons learned from the last 25 years of implementing this law, and how those lessons can be applied going forward (14:30). Today, we are learning from Drea Burbank. Drea is an MD-technologist and founder/CEO of Savimbo, which sells fair-trade carbon credits. Drea lives in the Colombian Amazon. Her international team of 300+ delinquent savants hacks carbon markets to support jungle small-farmers who conserve and reforest. She's addicted to yoga, passionate about creation, and prone to profanity or poetry — sometimes both. Let's get started... In this conversation with Drea Burbank, I learned: 0:00 Intro 02:25 What we do, stop deforestation and sell climate products. 05:00 The transition for the farmers to using tech. 06:00 Drea explains why deforestation is happening. The credit market is really inequitable. 07:45 Savimbo is about how to save a planet. 08:40 The short version of the backstory of Savimbo. 09:10 She discovered that her IQ was undesirable high. 12:00 Switching career from firefighter to Med school. 13:25 The effect of yoga on the physics. 15:20 The start of Savimbo with the assignment from the local medicine men for Drea. 19:05 The differences between conserving primary forest and optimizing a deforested area. 20:30 The important reasons why it is stupid to ship soy from the Amazon to Europe and the US. 21:20 It is easy to replace palm oil with forest oils. 22:30 One billion people live in tropical forests. 22:55 Three emerging technologies have changed everything in the last couple of years in these areas: satellite monitoring, electronic banking, and WhatsApp. 24:25 The effect of micropayments. 24:50 How we can help Savimbo, growth capital, buy credits, subscribe to a small farmer. 26:15 A better gift for family and friends. 29:35 Testing business partnerships in the Amazon based on consciousness. 31:00 Full commitment to one project. 32:55 Using open data to be transparent about where the money is going. 33:40 The first years of a new company are like having a baby, it's crying all the time. You work all the time. 34:40 The difference in the concept of time. Indigenous people don't work with time. 37:35 Low living cost and low income, everything goes back into the company. 39:05 The three founders started the company to give back. 39:35 The feeling of enough enables you to do amazing work. 40:30 How to stop chasing for more. 42:15 A death and rebirth process, and losing everything that you have. 45:20 Research on giftedness and research on Positive disintegration. Okay with the death and rebirth cycle. 47:20 The death and rebirth cycle as a planet. We are attached to colonialism and restoration and those need to die. 48:35 Indigenous people are cool and this is why. India is amongst the most biodiverse countries in the world, with a plethora of habitats, including tropical forests, grasslands, arid deserts, mangroves, and deciduous mountain forests. However, while much of India's megafauna species have recovered miraculously from the brink of extinction, a major issue looms large. That is the sustainable use of the country's tropical forests. Reports suggested that between 250 - 300 million of India's rural population rely on India's forests for some form of sustenance. This can include bushmeat, fodder, bamboo, and a range of non-timber forest products. In fact, 70% of India's rural population relies on fuelwood to meet their domestic energy needs. In this episode, I interview Dr. Kamaljit Bawa to discuss the various forest management strategies in India and how forest conservation can be utilized to alleviate poverty. Dr. Bawa is the founder of the famed Ashoka Trust for Research in the Environment and Ecology. Beyond this, he has had a very decorated career. He is currently a distinguished professor of Biology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Science and the American Philosophical Society. If you enjoyed this episode, do not forget to share and subscribe! Tropical forests are one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. We talk with a plant community ecologist looking at the connection between lighting and some tough tropical trees.
To solve the climate crisis, we need to make tropical forests worth more alive than dead, says environmental economist Nat Keohane. Highlighting the urgent need to stop deforestation and the carbon pollution it brings, he details the work of the LEAF Coalition -- a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership that's channeling one billion dollars into protecting tropical forests -- and shares three building blocks for a robust market for forest carbon that enables economies to thrive while protecting natural resources.

Humans and jungles are often seen as a poor combination. It is easy to write off the environment as challenging at best and a ‘green hell' at worst. But could it be that tropical forests have repeatedly helped rather than hindered humanity's progress? On this episode of the PastCast, Patrick Roberts discusses his article in the latest issue of Current World Archaeology magazine (also available on The Past website), in which he explains why it is time to rethink the archaeology of the jungle. Patrick spoke with regular PastCast presenter, Calum Henderson. The Past brings together the most exciting stories and the very best writing from the realms of history, archaeology, heritage, and the ancient world. You can subscribe to The Past today for just £7.99. If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider liking it, subscribing, and sharing it around. Patrick's book, Jungle: How Tropical Forests Shaped the World, is also available to buy.
A conversation with WRI Senior Fellow Frances Seymour, who says there's plenty of reason to believe the Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use could deliver on its high ambition of ending and reversing deforestation -- not so much because of the declaration itself, but because of the constellation of world events that birthed it. Frances is also co-author of the book "Why Forests? Why Now? The Science, Economics, and Politics of Tropical Forests and Climate Change."
Green Pulse Ep 54: How carbon credits can help save tropical forests (Part 2) 11:43 mins Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Carbon credits are gaining traction as companies and countries pledge to have their emissions reach “net-zero”, some by 2050 and others later. One source of such credits are forest conservation projects. By protecting forests from being cut down, trees are left to do what they do best: Soak up planet-warming carbon dioxide. How does this growing appetite for carbon credits help to protect the planet's natural carbon sponges? And how can Singapore, with its proximity to South-east Asia's rich natural habitats, contribute to their conservation? In the second of a two-part series on carbon credits, The Straits Times environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty discuss the issue with Professor Koh Lian Pin, who heads the Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions at the National University of Singapore. They discuss the following points: How a new study led by Prof Koh found out where carbon can be “prospected” from around the world (1:02) How can Singapore and the upcoming carbon marketplace it wants to launch benefit from these opportunities? (4:39) Will this demand for carbon credits from forest conservation projects help to save these habitats from being felled? Joined this week by ecologist and photojournalist Celina Chien, the team attempt to stay afloat as they go swimming down the rivers of Tropical Forests.
Tropical forests are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, but extensive deforestation has pushed many species to the brink of extinction. Conservation efforts have been limited by political and socioeconomic backgrounds of each region. By integrating ecological and social research techniques, Dr Peter Beck at St Edward’s University, Dr Michael Wasserman of Indiana University and their colleagues examine the effectiveness of tropical forest conservation strategies and the factors that encourage people to conserve their forests. Their extensive project also provides international research experience to STEM students from underrepresented backgrounds, and helps foster scientific and cultural exchange between countries.
Coming to you live from Costa Rica and brought to you by the La Reserva Forest Foundation (LRFF). BIG GUESTS THIS WEEK... TALAWA is a well-known and internationally celebrated Costa Rican based reggae super group. They explore sounds from the 70's and have recorded their entire, soon to be released, second album, "Reggae Revival", with the finest vintage equipment. Tony Roy was born in St. Thomas, Jamaica and knew he wanted to be a musician early on. His parents didn't agree so he made his way on his own. He was lead for the band Chosen People who recorded several popular songs. They toured internationally and opened for artists such as the honorable Mr. Dennis Brown, Tony's mentor. Tony's still going strong, listen up. Coming to you live from Costa Rica and brought to you by the La Reserva Forest Foundation (LRFF).
