In episode 516, Jo Keohane teaches us how to style food to make it look as delicious as possible in order to drive more traffic to our blogs. Since graduating from Culinary School in NYC in 2010 Jo Keohane freelanced as a Recipe Developer and Food Stylist in test kitchens of many America's best known publications, like Bon Appetit Magazine, Epicurious and Saveur. She has also worked with a variety of household brands like William Sonoma, Weightwatchers, Staub Cookware, Danone, Kraft and more. She started off life as a BBC journalist and then worked in PR in London. But a love of cooking and a desire to find a fulfilling career which would allow her to spend more time with her 3 kids took her back to school to study cooking. After moving to the USA in she was lucky enough to attend the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Now she runs her own food blog - The Family Food Kitchen - helping other busy families to eat well even when time is short! her blog focusses on easy, delicious and do-able recipes - and contains lots of one pot, sheet pan and easy meal ideas. In this episode, you'll learn about what to consider before you start shooting your recipe, including how to layer and pick ingredients, backdrops, props and garnishes. - Food Styling is a Problem Solving Exercise: During recipe development, plan ahead to make sure your ingredients will help you make your dish look appealing. - Don't Hold Back on Good-Quality Ingredients: Better quality ingredients will have more vibrancy and make your photos pop more. - Create Depth and Movement in Food Photography: Use layering to create depth in your photos and take photos of movement (e.g. pouring a sauce). - Balance Perfection and Authenticity: While it's important to make your photos look appealing and create intrigue avoid overly perfect photos - crumbs and spills in small quantities add character. - Proper Ingredient Storage: Store ingredients to maintain freshness and quality. For example improper storage of herbs can lead to wilting and might detract from your photos. - Adjust Cooking Times for Food Photography: There's a difference between cooking to eat food and cooking for photography. Adjust cooking times to ensure that the food looks its best on camera. - Use Props and Tools for Food Styling: Jo discusses the importance of having a set tray with essential tools and props for food styling, such as sharp knives, tweezers, Q-tips, paper towels, toothpicks, spritz bottles, squeeze bottles, spatulas, and brushes to aid in food styling. - Layering Garnishes to Enhance the Dish: Use different garnishing techniques to elevate the appearance of dishes for photography. By layering garnishes strategically, you can add depth and visual interest to the dish. Connect with Jo Keohane Website | Instagram

Joe Keohane is a longtime journalist and editor who believes that talking to strangers can not only help people feel happier and more empathetic, but can actually make the world a better place. In his first book, The Power of Strangers: The Benefits of Connecting In A Suspicious World, Joe talks to psychologists, anthropologists and plenty of strangers to prove it. In this encore episode, Guy and Joe explore why the lost art of connecting is now so important for our personal and professional well-being.

I read a lot of books—an average of 135 per year. And yes, I remember them—most of them, anyway. And every once in a while, a book grabs ahold of my leg and won't let go. That was the case with “The Power of Strangers: The Benefits of Connecting in a Suspicious World,” by Joe Keohane. In fact, it affected me so strongly that I closed the back cover, went to my computer, found Joe online, and called him. He agreed to be on the program, and this is my interview with him. You're going to want to hear this one—and you're going to want to read the book.

At the end of the Cold War, there was no question that the United States was the most powerful country in the world—militarily, economically, and technologically. International relations scholars call this system, where one country is more powerful than all others, a unipolar one. But most analysts now argue that America's decline over the last two decades coupled with a simultaneous Chinese rise, has ended the United States's predominance in international politics, and that the world is no longer unipolar.Stephen Brooks and William Wohlforth, international relations professors at Dartmouth College, made the argument in Foreign Affairs that while it's true that the United States's lead at the end of the Cold War has shrunk, the U.S. remains ahead of all other countries in terms of its military, economy, and technological production. Robert Keohane, Professor Emeritus of International Affairs at Princeton, responded to Brooks and Wohlforth's article, discussing whether polarity matters for the prevention of a conflict between the U.S. and China. Lawfare Research Fellow Matt Gluck sat down with Brooks, Wohlforth, and Keohane for a wide-ranging conversation about what it means for a country to be the strongest of them all, the balance of power between the U.S. and China, what the War in Ukraine reveals about Russia's global standing, and much more. In this conversation, we will speak with Joe about the importance of strangers, relationships, and how you can build a community at your brewery. Joe Keohane is the author of The Power of Strangers: The Benefits of Connecting in a Suspicious World--which was somehow called "possibly life-changing" by both Kirkus Reviews and bestselling author Kurt Andersen. He's also the coauthor of The Lemon, one of the most anticipated novels of 2023, which prompted Bob Odenkirk to comment, "I loved it." Keohane is a veteran journalist who has worked as an editor at Medium, Esquire, Entrepreneur, and Hemispheres. His writing—on everything from politics, to travel, to social science, business, and technology—has appeared in New York magazine, The Boston Globe, The New Yorker, Wired, Boston magazine, and The New Republic. Key Topics: How our celebrity-obsessed culture influenced the book's premise, and their particular fascination with what they call “the Celebrity-Death-Industrial Complex.” Their unique writing process, and why it has more in common with a TV writers' room than typical novel-writing. Why the character at the center of the book is called John Doe: “In dying famous, he became the property of others; he is a cipher for whatever you want him to mean to you.” Their backgrounds in the food industry, print and digital media, and publishing, and how that insider knowledge informs THE LEMON Why they were drawn to writing about the food world – and why food celebrities are “often the most entertaining.” Their research for the book, and how various plot threads – about music, Belfast and Northern Ireland, upscale design firms, and more – came to be. Marieke Louis and Lucile Maerten's book, Why International Organizations Hate Politics: Depoliticizing the World, draws on the extensive literature on functionalism and the related topic of technocracy, on anti-politics and bureaucractic multilateralism, and the wider, crosssectional research on expertise, knowledge and technicization, to systematically analyse and shine new light on the less explored topic of depoliticization.  Through current and historical case studies they examine behind the facades to reveal the common structures, mechanisms and logics of the depoliticization process at work and point to the unintended consequences and impacts on the very issues that IOs were created to address. Their argument is carefully constructed and very nuanced and they invite us to consider their whole book and to question everyday practices that may, as they say, “backlash”. The Power of Interacting and Connecting with People with Joe Keohane From a young age, our elders teach us to distrust people we don't know. One of the most popular children's stories revolves around this idea. Little Red Riding Hood goes out to her grandma. She talks to a stranger in the form of a sly fox. She arrives at her grandma's house only to find out she's been tricked. The moral of the story is singular—strangers have wicked intentions, so you have to be wary of them. But is there credence to this?  In today's episode, we're joined by Joe Keohane, a journalist, parallel parker, and a firm believer of the goodness in humanity and strangers. He debunks the stranger danger propaganda and explains the benefits of connecting with people . Cooperation and connection are part of our nature, and also our secret to success. Joe teaches us to overcome our fear of talking to strangers and how to have more meaningful interactions with them. Tune in to the full episode to tap into the power of connecting with strangers for self-expansion! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover the benefits of engaging and connecting with people. Understand, on a deeper level, your fear of talking to others. Now, even in their 70s, they still make new friends. He found this trait interesting. Although he is not as confident as his parents, he went into journalism, which involves a lot of talking to strangers as well. After having a moving conversation with a cab driver, Joe realized he hasn't been connecting with people as much as he did. Joe thinks two factors contribute to this decrease in engagement with others: stress from work and the advent of smartphones. Wanting to know more, Joe spent a few years researching how we connect with people. This was the genesis of his book. The Effects of Connecting with People Connecting with people is akin to self-expansion. When you talk to someone and have a profound connection with them, you can gain new perspectives on the world. Talking to someone different from you can also help you expand your viewpoints and reconsider your opinions about their race or country. These connections challenge preconceived ideas of the world and the people in it, which in turn alleviates prejudice and political polarization. The Fear of Talking to Strangers As a child, Joe was bombarded with stranger danger propaganda. Research shows that this belief eroded an entire generation's trust in other people. However, the claim that strangers pose a mortal threat is statistically baseless. In reality, more crimes are committed by people already close to the victim. Things like inequality, gender, race, and political orientation can make it harder to initiate connecting with people. People fear interacting with strangers because they don't know how to do it. Listen to the full episode to hear more about the research behind this anxiety! But once you begin conversing with others, it tends to go much better than you expect. Flipping the Scripts When asked how we're doing, we usually respond to others' questions by rote. These answers are called scripts. Joe challenged himself to break these scripts when he interacts with others. To his surprise, this led to more meaningful interactions, however short. Connecting with people this way can make us feel more optimistic and trusting. We tend to overestimate the rejection we will experience when starting conversations with strangers. Tune in to the episode to find out about the research on the topic! Interactions In-Person vs. On Social Media Social media allows you to be anonymous. You can also plan what you'll say ahead of replying. Meanwhile, talking to people in person is more cognitively challenging. However, you get mentally stronger as you start connecting with people more. In addition, it is our nature to communicate and collaborate with others. It is a trait that set us apart from other mammals and allowed us to form civilizations. Dangers of Disconnecting from People Lack of interaction and connection is poison to society. The polarization that it causes further leads to entrenchment and dehumanization of other people and groups. Online, it's much easier to dismiss people based on their opinions. Whereas in person, we are driven to seek commonality with others. You can have a conversation with people with opposing views. You just have to go out there seeking to understand. Media platforms give us a negative perception of other people. By going out into the world and connecting with others, you can correct this pessimism. Connecting with People in the Current Political Climate Joe recently spent time with an organization that helps Democrats and Republicans connect with each other. Being from Boston and living in New York, Joe identifies as a moderate liberal. His research and experiences made him less dismissive of people from the other side. He's hopeful that while it will take time, we can achieve political rebuilding. If you hear something you don't like, don't be quick to dismiss or respond contemptuously. Instead, pause for a second and try to understand the other view. The Problem with Today's Society Humans are hypersocial creatures. Cooperation is in our basic human nature and the secret to success. But due to various factors, we have become smaller and angrier beings. Now that we're not fulfilling our social needs, rates of depression and loneliness are skyrocketing. To combat this, we need to try interacting and connecting with people. How Joe Feels Radically Loved Joe's 5-year old recently described her love for him as something that makes her heart explode. That's what makes Joe radically loved. 5 Powerful Quotes [12:28] “The main fear that people had was just a fear that they didn't know how to [interact with others].” [16:31] “There's a raft of benefits to even having like kind of high-quality small talk with somebody. You just have to actually do it.” [21:07] “It comes pretty natural to people once they do it. Once they get past the anxiety and once they work those muscles a little bit, it becomes second nature. [31:01] “Instead of being reactive, act more wisely.” [33:38] “We're wired for connection. That's the secret to the success of the species.” About Joe Joe Keohane is a veteran journalist who's held high-level positions in publications like Esquire, The New Yorker, Wired, and Boston Magazine. He has also contributed to writing several textbooks and a screenplay. His life revolves around talking to people he barely knows and reporting facts and data. Fueled by curiosity, he decided to intensively research connecting with people and their value for self-expansion. This work resulted in his book, The Power of Strangers.
