Welcome to the CavasShips Podcast with Christopher P. Cavas and Chris Servello…a weekly podcast looking at naval and maritime events and issues of the day – in the US, across the seas and around the world. The SNA National Symposium runs Jan 13-16 and is held at the Crystal City Hyatt Regency. Our daily SNA pod coverage is sponsored by Lockheed Martin in conjunction with our weekly pod sponsors HII and GE Aerospace.
A strong display at Bramall Lane counted for nothing as a missed penalty from Patrick Roberts and a late Sheffield United goal saw Sunderland hit six games without a win in the race for automatic promotion. It was a tough one to take, and it didn't come with incident or talking points, so Dave and Pete joined me to go through the 1-0 loss that has put a dampener on our weekends. Enjoyed the episode? Aye after a short but some might say blessed period where their editor lost his hearing and everyone lost their shit (it was peaceful my end at least) the lads returned to talk about how much they hate these breaks, before sort of contradicting themselves a bit whilst trying to look back on the last few fixtures with a little bit of perspective and of course ahead to December. What's the crack? Club before country - Have we mentioned how much we hate not just international breaks, but international fixtures? Aye that hasn't changed at all. Safe to say reaction not just to Coventry, which the lads discuss a fair bit here, but just to the last few draws has cast a bit of a shadow on our achievements so far; Are Gav and Chris as concerned? Does this say more about the rising expectations that come with our position in the league? The Coventry draw was definitely a situation where two points were lost, but is it a sign of anything significant besides just being a bit too relaxed coming back out and a few slices of luck for them in that second half? Injuries - Apparently Romaine Mundle is looking at a while out and Browne won't be available for a little while either so which players would be looking to take advantage of this? Ahead of Millwall and the puzzle presented to Regis Le Bris given Jobe Bellingham, Trai Hume and Patrick Roberts are suspended.. what are we expecting Regis to do? Will he actually look at a different formation and setup? Would he consider a switch to three at the back? Luckily it's not up to us like…All this and more! Ha'way the Lads! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our Gav and Martin return to talk all about the win over Oxford and what the last three wins might mean for the club, look at our match tomorrow against QPR at Loftus Road and basically just... praise these lads. Endless praise aye. What's the crack? How good have we been since returning from the international break? We remain FIVE POINTS CLEAR at the top of the Championship and if we're not careful we might end up in a promotion race... WILSONNNN; He keeps scoring, he keeps smiling and Mayenda is returning but will the latter get a look in currently? JOBE; The better Bellingham just keeps getting better aye. How do we keep hold of him without promotion? Or Riggy for that matter? If at first you don't succeed, Trai, Trai again; Hume is finding his feet again and Patrick Roberts seems in a decent mood. RLB and injury; He's calm ahead of QPR and quite pleased with the Oxford result, but Reg has a few injury headaches and a lot more to prove in the division this season. Patto out? Aye it looks like it. Can Moore do a decent cover job until he returns? Looking at QPR away, trying not to get carried away and so much more! Aye it looks as though we've been quiet but unfortunately for you all it was merely preparation for an extremely busy month for ourselves and the Lads... Our Gavin Henderson sat down with Martin Wanless to talk about the last couple defeats at the hands of Plymouth and that Huddersfield horror show and try to work out why we're in the situation we are. What's the crack? If the 2-0 loss to Plymouth wasn't enough misery for one week we were treated to an absolute feast of terrible football on Wednesday night as we lost at home to Huddersfield Town; Safe to say it's not gone down well. What exactly is Tony doing? Without Clarke taking games by the scruff we look pretty toothless for all our possession; What should we (or Mogga in this case) be doing to solve this pretty significant issue? He may have just got a contract extension but does Patrick Roberts deserve to start at the moment? Just how much of a impact has losing our ability to field "proper" full backs to cover full back duties had on our ability to play our natural game? The Lads look back over the last 8 games or so and try to analyse our results, are we actually at risk yet? How many chances will Mowbray get before KLD and Speakman decide to change things up? We know moods can change fast with a few good results but are we confident we can get those results in this run? Looking forward to Millwall then? All this catharsis and more! Ha'way the Lads! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Gav and Chris sat down to react to the absolute sh*tshow at Rotherham, query our team selection on the night, look ahead to our next match away to Coventry and answer a few of your questions! What's the crack? That was just… aye… what was that? The lads think one man is to blame for that result, and he wasn't on the pitch. Don't Panic; The lads try to take some positives from the game, try being the operative word. Why didn't we start Patrick Roberts? Why were Michut and Neil picked for a physical battle? Why did we drop Hume? Why can't we just win all the time? Etc Should Neil and Amad be rested soon? How do the lads feel looking ahead to our fixture against Coventry at the weekend? If tiredness is an issue, why are we not rotating as much? Is Mogga not yet confident in lads like Ekwah, Ba, Lihadji and Bennette? The lads answer your questions, including why it is the refs are all so sh*te this season..All this and more! Ha'way the Lads! Start Patrick Roberts! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionshipWe definitely didn't win 2-1 aye. More tired than Dan Neil here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our Chris and Phil sat down to react to taking yet another three points off Reading this season, after Paddy Roberts and the Lads finally broke through against what many have described as one of the worst footballing sides to have visited the Stadium of Light in years, as well as quickly looking ahead to our visit to QPR on Tuesday night! What's the crack? Well that was certainly something from our opponents wasn't it...Can Ince be blamed for setting them up like that? Was it more on us to break them down? The best form of defence is a tash; the rise (and rise) of Trai Hume! Some good old Patrick Roberts magic; what did the lads make of that goal and his performance overall? Just how good is Dan Ballard? Are the Reading forwards a great example of why getting someone in for the sake of it isn't always a great idea? Uncle Tony's Supersubs; following that slog of a first half the lads needed a bit more bite and so the gaffer once again deployed his 'hoy the kitchen sink at them' tactic. Seemed to do the trick.QPR on Tuesday; they're not having a great time of it these past several months, so how do the lads see this panning out (on the Sky red button for those not able to make the trip) and what changes do we expect (if any) from Mogga? All this and more! Ha'way the Lads! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Thomas Larsen and Patrick Roberts of the Max Planck Institute of the Science of Human History join us to discuss how we can learn about early hominins diets using stable isotope analysis. The abstract of their BioScience article follows.Stable isotope analysis of teeth and bones is regularly applied by archeologists and paleoanthropologists seeking to reconstruct diets, ecologies, and environments of past hominin populations. Moving beyond the now prevalent study of stable isotope ratios from bulk materials, researchers are increasingly turning to stable isotope ratios of individual amino acids to obtain more detailed and robust insights into trophic level and resource use. In the present article, we provide a guide on how to best use amino acid stable isotope ratios to determine hominin dietary behaviors and ecologies, past and present. We highlight existing uncertainties of interpretation and the methodological developments required to ensure good practice. In doing so, we hope to make this promising approach more broadly accessible to researchers at a variety of career stages and from a variety of methodological and academic backgrounds who seek to delve into new depths in the study of dietary composition.

Our Bomber and Malc got together to quickly go over an improved performance... but a frustrating result, as the Lads took just a point from Michael Appleton's men at Sincil Bank! What's the crack?A frustrating game with a lot of skill on display but very little end product - just wasn't going our way today in front of goal; The lads pick a couple faults with the team selection - namely one Corry Evans getting the nod over Jay Matete for reasons unknown - but besides that we set up pretty well didn't we? Patrick Roberts had an absolutely brilliant game - the lads try to wring every bit of positivity out of his and Dennis Cirkin's performance as they can... Did Lincoln really turn up to win? How does that result feel overall, with so few opportunities to get the points we need left? All this and more! It wasn't pretty, but when three points are all that's needed, who is arguing? The January transfer window is now well underway. And Sunderland have concluded an early deal after just four days since clubs were permitted to sign players again. Right-back Trai Hume has signed on the dotted line at the Stadium of Light and becomes Lee Johnson's first addition this winter. The Black Cats are said to have beaten off competition from League One rivals Lincoln City, Scottish giants Celtic and Championship club Stoke City to sign the 19-year-old. Here, though, Sunderland Echo writer Phil Smith, James Copley and Joe Nicholson mull-over the latest transfer news and take a look ahead to Saturday's game against Wycombe Wanderers in League One.
Rich was joined by Gav and Martin to look back a bit - as we stand at the midway point of the season - as well as looking forward to our business dealings now the January window is open, and the fixtures we have coming up - including our next opponents this Saturday in Wycombe Wanderers! What's the crack? So December went reasonably well didn't it - how much credit does Lee Johnson and the squad deserve for the turnaround following that slight dip? The Annual Transfer Window chaos; We have lads coming in, lads wanted by other clubs, positions that need filling over the next month... how soon do we think the majority of our business will be done?Dan Neil - The Speakman says no - but to be fair would we accept a serious offer from a big PL side? Even if we did - this window or next - would that actually be better for lads like Dan Neil or could they suffer the same struggles in development as the players we're trying to bring in?Which positions require the most attention in the lads opinions, especially given some of our longer term injuries, and is there any need to recall players like Diamond right now? This Trai Hume lad sounds promising... so what do we know about him and his time at Linfield, and what do we know about the Patrick Roberts link? What are the minimum expectations for the side regarding performances and points we're seeking to gain before the window ends, and how confident is everyone feeling after the final games of 2021?Looking ahead to Wycombe - Are we confident Lee Johnson's positive playing style will overcome the more negative playing style of Ainsworth? All this and much, much more! Humans and jungles are often seen as a poor combination. It is easy to write off the environment as challenging at best and a ‘green hell' at worst. But could it be that tropical forests have repeatedly helped rather than hindered humanity's progress? On this episode of the PastCast, Patrick Roberts discusses his article in the latest issue of Current World Archaeology magazine (also available on The Past website), in which he explains why it is time to rethink the archaeology of the jungle. Patrick spoke with regular PastCast presenter, Calum Henderson. The Past brings together the most exciting stories and the very best writing from the realms of history, archaeology, heritage, and the ancient world. Welcome to the latest episode of Twenty Minute Tims. We're halfway to the champions league as a fairly drab 0-0 draw gets the job done over Rosenborg. The Scottish Premiership returns and Celtic stroll it against newly promoted Livingston. There's also Dedryck Boyata, Bon Jovi, Patrick Roberts and much more. Thanks very much for listening.
First up, we discuss English youngsters that haven't yet received much playing time at their respective clubs, but are sure to be future stars. Rhian Brewster made the headlines with the England u17's where they won the World Cup and he was certainly pivotal to their success, scoring 8 goals along the road to glory. Eddie Nketiah was also talked about glowingly, the young gunner certainly has an eye for goal- as shown in his amazing substitute appearance for Arsenal in the League Cup where he scored a brace. Callum Hudson-Odoi has played a handful of games for Chelsea this season but he's already shown that he's a star in the making. Not too many youngsters get a chance at Roman Abrahmovic's club, but could he break the mould? Patrick Roberts- on loan from City to Celtic was also mentioned. He's recently been linked back to the premier league as a makeweight for some sort of deal with Riyad Mahrez, but can he be a success in England? Tom certainly thinks so! The next couple of questions asked by Football Index traders were regarding Arsenal! The first of which, asked about Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere's futures at the club. Ramsey has 1 year left on his deal come the summer and Wilshere's contract is up, so what will happen to Arsenal's British midfield duo? Aaron Ramsey has emerged as one of Arsenal's leaders and best players, so a deal closer to Mesut Ozil's wage bracket is what he and his agent are surely vying for. Wilshere on the other hand has been offered a new deal, but reports suggest the offers have been rebuffed in hopes of more money. The second question was regarding players that could prosper with a new manager at the helm. We discussed Granit Xhaka, Mustafi and Bellerin who could all improve with the right defensive coaching. Could these players fulfill their potential under new management? A question that traders constantly ask me is whether or not you should buy players who are leaving the Premier League. My answer always points to buzz returns- as some of you may have seen, with Coutinho, the buzz returns were just too good to resist and he saw massive price appreciation. This led us to discuss some players that could leave our shores, including the likes of Eden Hazard. Relegated teams always offer great opportunities to Football Index traders, so I asked Tom what players could stay in the Premier League even if their respective teams go down. Now at the time of recording, we didn't know who was going down so we went and rattled off players from Southampton, Stoke, Swansea and West Brom that could be poached by bigger clubs in the league. Next up we talked about Celtic's much coveted full-back Kieran Tierney. Constantly linked to Manchester United, he was bound to catch the eye of many Football Index traders, so Tom went and gave us the low down. Are Eddie Howe's Bournemouth an option for the him or will the red side of Manchester capture the talented left back? Anthony Martial is sure to be in the papers this summer, so I asked Tom to give us as much information on the situation as possible. Where he could potentially end up? Does he need to leave to fulfill his sky high potential? Either way- he's surely going to have many, many suitors during the transfer window. Speaking of Manchester United, we go on to discuss the positions that the most important club with regards to Football Index need to strengthen. Jose Mourinho has very publically stated that they won't go after any forwards, but could an Anthony Martial exit force his hand to go for Gareth Bale or Paulo Dybala? Or perhaps they'll target someone younger like Malcom? Defensively, a centre back and left back look like key targets for the Red Devils. As discussed earlier Kieran Tierney has been targetted, as well as Danny Rose, Alex Sandro and a number of others. At Centre half, Milan Skriniar, Kalou Koulibaly and Toby Alderweireld have all been linked with the club recently. With Carrick retiring, Fellaini seemingly on the move it looks like United will be in the market for a holding midfielder, as well as perhaps one in the box to box mould. Fabinho, Fred, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Arturo Vidal, Bryan Cristante and Eric Dier have all been linked to the club so it'll be fascinating to see who Jose Mourinho pairs with Paul Pogba next season.....if he stays at the club that is. At the start of the show we briefly mention Chelsea loanees Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kenedy, but what other players could return from their loan spells to make an impact at their respective clubs, or other Premier League clubs if they're sold. As well as dissecting the affects these two could have on Chelsea, we also talk about Jeff Reine-Adelaide, the Arsenal youngster on loan at Angers in Ligue 1. This season we saw Mohamed Salah take the Premier League by storm, but who is next season's surprise package? Who is going to have that breakthrough season. Mo Salah appreciated over 1000% throughout the season so there's certainly money to be made if you pick right! Bernardo Silva, GiGi Wijinaldum and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were mentioned amongst a plethora of others, Tom and I may have rattled through around 20 players in this segment! Lastly, we talked about two Championship players that have made the headlines recently; Ryan Sessegnon and James Maddison. Is there a chance we see one or both in the Premier League next season? If so- can they have Dele Alli style impacts on the clubs they move to? I'm sure Football Index traders will have a keen eye one these two over the summer... Welcome back to another weekend podcast from the Randalstown Hoops were we look back at Celtic's 4-0 win over Ross County at the Global Energy Stadium. Brendan Rodgers made wholesale changes to the team which booked their place in the Betfred Cup final against Aberdeen with a 1-0 win over Newco last Sunday. Those players drafted in went out to impress from the start and winger Patrick Roberts scored in the third minute with a fine drive, although County did fashion several chances themselves. Indeed, Staggies defender Andrew Davies hit the post with a header after the break but in the 83rd minute midfielder Stuart Armstrong clinched the points with a fine finish before substitutes Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele added further goals in added time. The Hoops extended their unbeaten domestic run to 13 games and go further clear of Aberdeen, whom they visit on Saturday. County, meanwhile, have had gone eight games without a win although boss Jim McIntyre will take some heart from battling performance before the late collapse. Rodgers made eight changes to the side which started against the Light Blues at Hampden. Emilio Izaguirre, Cristian Gamboa, Armstrong, Callum McGregor, Roberts, Ryan Christie, Liam Henderson and Leigh Griffiths all came into the side. Celtic moved nine points clear at the top of the Premiership after beating Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Tom Rogic's controlled half-volley put the reigning champions ahead midway through the first half. Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis denied Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele and Rogic as the visitors pressed for a second after the interval. Having struggled to create, Aberdeen had a late flurry and Craig Gordon prevented an Erik Sviatchenko own goal. Two victories over Celtic at Pittodrie last season had kept the Dons close to Ronny Deila's team until the last few weeks of the season. But Derek McInnes' men drop from second to fourth in a tight table having played a game more than Celtic, who they meet in next month's Scottish League Cup final. We all so hear from brendan rodgers post match interview where he talks to Sky Sports about the game . Our Featured games this week we look back at 3 games from the the past. 1986-05-03: St. Mirren 0-5 Celtic Celtic snatch the championship by edging out Heart of Midlothian on the last day of the campaign. The margin was on goal difference, as Celtic beat St Mirren 5-0 at Love Street and Hearts fall to two late goals from Dundee at Dens Park. 1988-05-14: Celtc 2-1 Dundee Utd, Scottish Cup Final Difficult to begin to understand the atmosphere that surrounded this game. For the Celtic players, it was a chance to seal a memorable double for the club in our Centenary Season having wrapped up the league earlier on. For Dundee Utd, it was a chance to finally break their hoodoo in the Scottish Cup having lost countless number of finals to date (inc the previous cup final in 1987 by St Mirren). Despite being league winners, this was not going to be an easy game for Celtic, and Dundee Utd under the legendary Jim McLean were a very good and entertaining side with some quality players. 1991-03-17: Celtic 2-0 Rangers, Scottish Cup, St Patrick's Day massacre. Cracking win for Celtic after seeing us lose a man first (Peter Grant red card). Huns lost three players and a great morale boosting win saw us KO the huns. First half goals from Gerry Creaney & Shug (deflected free-kick) sealed the win, and no amount of posturing from the Huns could get them near us. Peter Grant made an ass of himself by getting sent off stupidly. He conceded a free-kick outside our box (first yellow) and then charged the free-kick down (second yellow) to get himself a red! Thankfully we survived. Great win as the support sang "Happy Birthday St Patrick" all day long.. Wonderful.

Mina Rzouki is back to join Kait Borsay and Lynsey Hooper on The Offside Rule (We Get It!), brought to you by Continental Tyres. We're playing Mystic Meg (again!) and telling the four-tunes of the top 4 sides - now that we've seen Chelsea struggle, who could swoop in and steal their place? Here at The Offside Rule, we love a story about a footballer running another business, and we've recently discovered Mathieu Flamini is a secret entrepreneur - his business, GF Biochemicals, could be worth a whopping £20billion. We think he should use it to buy Arsenal, and we look at previous players who've bought clubs to gauge if it would be a successful venture... We think more players should take note from Tammy Abraham and Patrick Roberts to solve an on-pitch dispute - the England under-19 stars played rock, paper, scissors to decide who would take a penalty in their game against Japan. Who else has came up with an inventive idea to solve an on-the-pitch dispute? It seems referees have a lot to answer for...
