What do you do when you've already done everything there is to do in trend. Managed billion of dollars: check. One of first to run a trend following mutual fund: check. Trend following on individual equities: check. You push the envelope again, and convince the folks that create ETFs that you actually can pack your fully diversified equities plus futures portfolio into an ETF wrapper.  On this episode of The Derivative, we sit down with the legendary Jerry Parker, a former Turtle Trader who's newest effort is an ETF product called ‘Trend Following Plus Nothing'.   Jerry and Jeff explore a wide range of topics, including whether multi-billion CTAs sold their (trend) souls to get there, just why nobody really tries to trend follow on individual equity names. Seeing a green light when they tell you it can't be done. Jerry also opens up about finding the perfect balance of personal risk and mental fortitude to achieve success in trend following while sharing some personal anecdotes, including his love for pet birds.  Discover the power of trading components instead of an index of components, the impact of Fed limits on trend, and the intricacies of volatility targeting (hint: Jerry doesn't believe in it). We'll also delve into the art of portfolio construction, the virtue of trend following impatience, the true essence of trend following as an inflationary hedge, and so much more — SEND IT. In this episode, we talk with Jerry Parker from Chesapeake Capital. Chesapeake has always been a classic trend following CTA. "Trend Following + Nothing" is their firm motto.  Over the years Jerry has focused on adding markets to their portfolio. They were one of the few CTAs to trade single stock futures. They started trading single stocks in the '90s and continue to do so today. They do not trade any stock indices. About 50% of their portfolio is commodities with FX, FI and single stocks making up the balance. They do trade BTC futures. They have added quite a few of the more exotic/less liquid commodities in the past few years: milk, lumber, sunflower seeds, maze, rough rice, palm oil, iron ore, rubber and look forward to trading the commodity markets in China. His philosophy is to trade any and all markets that are liquid and add to their portfolio diversification.    Jerry and I talk about his start as a Turtle Trader.  What is CTA, Managed Futures, Trend Following.  We talk about what he has learned over 4+ decades in the market.  Why he hates vol targeting.  Why discipline and sticking to your plan is the key to life.   I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jerry as much as I did...

It’s not often you get to sit down with a Turtle, let alone the father of the Turtle Experiment, and when I do I find it fascinating learning about the different experiences and outcomes that emerged from what really can be boiled down to 2 to 3 weeks of training in how to use trading rules to make money in the markets.  What was truly unique about the conversation I want to share a few key takeaways from today, is that Richard Dennis was joined by two of his Turtles, namely Jerry Parker and Brian Proctor, where they shared some of their personal impressions from their time together…things that has not really ever been discussed publically. We even discussed their research in to “counter-trend” models…not something you would think the Turtles would spend time on…and of course just having Richard Dennis share his wisdom was huge. If you want to catch the full conversation then just click here Turtle Takeaways Niels:  Brian and Jerry, what are the key takeaways from the whole Turtle experience when you think back on those years?  Jerry:  Hmmm, the takeaways? I think I learned a lot and it was just a magical time. Those were four great years. I had no expectation of future business. I think we all would have been incredibly happy to continue managing money for Rich for the rest of our lives and that would have been a good idea. "...is proper trading a real business?" I think that some of the other guys that we competed against at other CTAs, in my opinion, probably did not have nearly the training and support that we had and yet they have large businesses. A lot of these guys went out together and worked together so I think that was maybe an opportunity that we missed - most of us going out on our own. So I really wish, in some kind of crazy way, that we had the best training, the best experience, the best four years that anyone could ever hope for, but I don't know that I personally...  I went to a good business school, even though it doesn't really look like it. Maybe part of my problem was that... I suggested a question for Rich because I've asked this question many times to myself (maybe it's a bad question) but, is proper trading a real business? To some degree, I've tried to trade properly and not pay attention to clients as much as maybe I should have and not vol targeted and not taken profits and not made it a better experience. I think to some degree that was one of the Turtle characteristics that clients and others are going to lead you down the bad path so stick with your system. Stick with what you believe to be true, but maybe a little more compromise would have made me have a larger business. Niels:  Hmmm, yeah.  What about you, Brian?  Brian:  I would say that the most important concepts and things that always resonated with me were that you just have to have really strict risk management, don't overtrade, take lots of losing trades, don't get out of your winning trades until the trend is confirmed that it's over.  I think risk management was rule/key concept number one. Then, concept number two was: keep looking at new systems, blending different values together, different timeframes, to see if you can come up with something better than you already have. So, we've invested a lot of money in our research infrastructure, and we're always searching for the next best, great systems. I think those were the two concepts that I took away from the Turtle program were system development and risk management.  Niels:  Now, just going back to you, Rich. I can imagine you telling Jerry and Brian and all the other Turtles, "Trade small, follow the system, do the hard thing, do the right thing, and innovate and so on." What if you were to teach a Turtle Program today, would you teach them the same thing or is there anything different to what you would teach them in 2017?  Richard:  Well, I wouldn't teach the same thing and, to tell you the truth, I don't know exactly what I would teach because...

We are pleased to see that about 70% of active traders in the competition are making money Mike Melissinos, trend following hedge fund manager, is on the show to keep us grounded He demonstrates how you can stick to your trading plan even in tough circumstances And make hay when the sun shines! Trader Interview - Mike Melissinos - Trend Following Hedge Fund Manager Mike Melissinos is only a few years older than us, but he runs a hedge fund. That is pretty cool. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool trend following trader and is a fan and friend of Turtle Trader and trend following legend Jerry Parker. Mike talks to us about what it is like to be on top of the world when the markets are working for your trading style, and how to keep the faith when the markets just aren’t conducive to making money. Trend following is a notoriously cyclical way of trading. Sometimes markets are trending, sometimes they just are not. Mike keeps the faith because he has done his research. He has done his maths and he knows that trends cluster, and when times are good they are very good. He also knows that trend following mega markets usually directly follow extended flat periods. It is no secret that we are currently in a flat period and that trend followers are suffering, particularly in commodities. But, Mike knows that the good times could be just around the corner, so he keeps the faith. Crypto Trading Competition Update It has been really pleasing to see so many people to get off to a positive start in the crypto competition. Despite there being no leverage available, one trader is up over 20% in the first 6 days. Many others are in double digits and about 70% of active traders overall are making money. There is plenty of distance to go, but this is a good start! The trade of the week was definitely a Bitcoin Long trade from the bottom of the weekend sell off. A number of traders were caught out by the initial sell off over the weekend when Segwit2x was cancelled. Fortunately I think a few traders didn’t start till Monday so they weren’t caught in a long position!! Or maybe some smarty-pants actually went short and caught the move down? If so email in and tell us! We’ve seen some movement in Alt-Coins with a spike up in Ripple and Litecoin, though both of those moves were temporary and anyone not taking profit will have been left with almost zero gains after a fast retracement. But maybe this signals a medium term upwards movement back towards the all time highs? Ripple’s spike was caused by good news from American Express, so it may have a longer term effect. 19 days to go! Who will win the £1000 and more importantly, the kudos of winning the world’s first crypto trading competition!

The Meb Faber Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2017 72:17

Episode 35 features one of the original Turtle Traders. “What’s a Turtle Trader” you ask? The story involves Richard Dennis, a great trader from the 1970’s. As the story goes, he made his first million by about age 25. By the early 80’s, he was worth about $200 million. Around this time, the movie “Trading Places” came out (two millionaires make a bet on the outcome of training a bum to be a financial whiz, while taking a financial whiz and, effectively, turning him into a bum). Richard felt he could similarly train a financial no-nothing, turning him into a great trader. Richard’s partner felt it wouldn’t work. So they made a bet. (Though as you’ll hear on today’s podcast, Jerry doesn’t actually believe there was ever a bet.) Regardless, how’d it turn out? Three or four years later, the group Richard trained had made, on aggregate, around $100 million. The episode starts as Meb asks Jerry how he became involved with Dennis, trend following, and the Turtle Traders. Jerry was hooked on the idea of trend following from the beginning. Meb suggests that many people either “get it” or they don’t – meaning they get hooked, buying into the strategy completely, or not. For many people, the philosophy just doesn’t take. Eventually the program ended, after which Jerry moved back to Virginia and started Chesapeake, which basically consisted of a telephone, a quote machine, and his trading rules. Jerry tell us how the company grew and how its trading systems developed. They’ve gone from trading around 20 markets to well over 100 now. Meb asks in terms of conditions, what’s been the most challenging market for Jerry in his career at Chesapeake? His answer – the market since 2008. The conversation eventually steers toward leverage and volatility. Meb says how most people don’t realize how they can tamp down a volatile market through trend following and managed futures. Jerry agrees, and adds that you want to “make the same (volatility) bet” despite different markets, to maintain consistency. Meb then asks why so many investors, retail and institutional alike, have such small allocations to trend following. Jerry gives us his thoughts, pointing toward the inherent bias people have for equities. He also believes most investors truly don’t realize how powerful diversified trend following can be. Meb agrees, noting how if you showed an adviser the returns of all sorts of portfolios yet didn’t name the strategies, in almost all circumstances, the portfolios the advisers would choose would have the largest allocation going to trend following. But when you attach the actual strategy names, people shy away from trend following. Meb thinks it really boils down to a branding problem. Jerry thinks people have it backward—they see trend following as an add-on to some other strategy, when in fact, it’s the core. Start with the CTA strategy and maybe add some long-only equities. Meb then steers the guys into a discussion about some of Jerry’s most popular tweets. One of which is Jerry’s recent quote: “Beating the market is hard. Even surviving the market is hard. Stamina may be the most underrated quality.” The quote really resonated with Meb, and he asks if Jerry ever wanted to throw in the towel. Jerry thinks discipline is at least 50% of it, and yes, it can be very hard. The guys then discuss markets, with Jerry noting that there is nothing to be lost from trading more markets than stocks. For instance, he loves currencies. This prompts Meb to bring up a Bitcoin-crash example, where a trend following approach could possibly have saved some major losses. The conversation then turns toward common investor mistakes, most notably the tendency to hold losses and sell winners short. Simply put, the behavioral side of investing is extremely challenging. This causes Meb to wonder what will happen to the roboadvisors when a bear market finally begins. Specifically, with it so easy to pull your cash out of a roboadvisor (and no live advisor to stop you), how many investors will allow fear to make them liquidate their positions? There’s tons more in this episode, including how Jerry lost 60% in one day, the differences between technical analysis and trend following, the “turtle program” of the future, and the one market that won’t allow futures trading. Do you know which one it is? Find out in Episode 35.

Today on the podcast, Michael Covel opens up with a monologue and closes with an interview of him covering trend following 'fundamentals'. Covel opens up by discussing how the phrase “black box” is used to marginalize those who practice trend following trading. Next, Covel plays an interview clip from James Simons, the chairman of Renaissance Technologies, who generated for himself over 14B USD all through models. The second part of today’s episode are highlights of Andrew Horowitz’s interview with Covel--an interview *of* Covel this time. Covel and Horowitz discuss the TurtleTrader story; black boxes, emotions, and computers; what trend following is from the most basic level; the question of “why”, and why it might not be as important as many people think; finding which markets to enter; finding the optimal bet size; and how Fed intervention plays into the market. Michael Covel just released the first chapter and preface for the audiobook version of The Complete TurtleTrader in a recent podcast. When Covel heard that a Chicago reporter did a retrospective piece on the Turtles for WBEZ in Chicago, he decided to include the piece along with the afterword for the audiobook in today's podcast. The afterword wasn't in the first edition of the original book release due to some of the more "fun" details it included (was added in paperback release). There are some fantastic Turtle traders; many people who did really well. However, for some, it was weird to say the least. That doesn't mean you can't learn from them, and the TurtleTrader book afterword is a wealth of information and insight for anyone with even a passing interest in the Turtles. When you hear the Turtles (the rock band) you know that Michael Covel is going to discuss something Turtle-related. Today's podcast is a little different: it includes the preface and first chapter of the audiobook version of Covel's second book, "The Complete TurtleTrader". Covel talks about his plans for an upcoming Turtle research project. The Turtle rules are not a secret, and neither is the story. However, there are quite a few people out there looking for more information. For a topic like the Turtle story, you can't put all the flavor into 80,000 words alone. Covel discusses the wealth of extra information out there that he plans on including in this upcoming project. Would you like a free trend following DVD? Go to trendfollowing.com/win.

My guest today is Jerry Parker. In 1983, Parker was accepted into the Turtle Program, a select investment training program developed by successful Chicago portfolio manager Richard Dennis. He appears in Covel's "The Complete TurtleTrader" and has been the most successful TurtleTrader. Parker founded Chesapeake Capital Corporation, a global investment manager headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, in 1988. The topic is Trend Following.  In this episode of Trend Following Radio we discuss: Mistake of combining different strategies with trend following, and the importance of having a concentrated strategy that you can rely on How discretionary moves can get in the way of your system, and "systematized discretion" The psychological effect of following a trend following strategy for decades The idea of going for positive expected value over what's least risky Why Parker doesn't like to use the term "managed futures", and why it doesn't really tell the story of trend followers Trend followers performing well at different points in time compared to long-only Using trend following as another strategy for investors who only invest through a long-only value-based system The importance of not letting your views on politics and society influence your trading, and maintaining a systematic and disciplined approach The growth of news media since 1984, information overflow, limiting your variables, and using price as your primary indicator How Parker has learned over the years to deal with drawdowns, loving your losses, and the importance the Turtle program played in his education on drawdowns Why governments are the ultimate counter-trend traders Why buy and hold is not a good place to be even if people are saying it's turned around Parker's stock-only trend following program, and why the diversified program will do better than the stock-only system Leverage as a tool Jump in! --- I'm MICHAEL COVEL, the host of TREND FOLLOWING RADIO, and I'm proud to have delivered 10+ million podcast listens since 2012. Michael Covel talks to David Cheval. Cheval was an inside witness to Richard Dennis and Bill Eckhardt's famed Turtle experiment. Through the involvement of his former wife, famed original TurtleTrader Liz Cheval (www.emccta.com), David Cheval's history and background for the Turtle story comes from a unique vantage point. Cheval talks with Covel about the events surrounding the Turtle experiment, including his own interesting part in alerting his former wife to the opportunity (he is still an investor in her firm). They also discuss Cheval's progression from a runner on the Chicago pits, to the formation of his CPO (Dearborn Capital Management), to his career in law today; the presence of Richard Dennis on the Chicago Board of Trade in the years prior to the Turtle experiment; some of the lessons that can be gleaned from some of the most successful Turtles; the difference between volatility and risk; and why basic trend following philosophies are timeless. Cheval's oral history is a nice addition to Michael Covel's classic TurtleTrader book "The Complete TurtleTrader" (www.turtletrader.com).
