BOATS THIS WEEK (JUL 29-AUG 4,2024) — There were two major disaster this week in history. The first we'll learn about is an event many consider the worst shark attack in history, which began on July 30th, 1945, and is shown in the movie USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. Our next historical disaster marks its 48th anniversary on Thursday this week, and we'll watch the racing movie starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl called Rush, because it was on August 1st, 1976, that Daniel Brühl's character in that movie, Formula One legend Niki Lauda, nearly died in a fiery wreck during the German Grand Prix. Then, we'll learn about the "Slap Heard 'Round the World" from the World War II movie Patton, because this Saturday is the 81st anniversary of when General George S. Patton slapped U.S. Army Private Charles Kuhl. Last but certainly not least, our 'based on a true story' movie from this week in history is yet another disaster movie: Ron Howard's 2022 movie called Thirteen Lives. Until next time, here's where you can continue the story. Events from This Week in History Tuesday: USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage | BOATS #48 Thursday: Rush | BOATS #70 Saturday: Patton | BOATS #163 Birthdays from This Week in History Monday: Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie Thursday: William Travis in The Alamo | BOATS #172 Sunday: Louis Armstrong in Louis A Historical Movie Released This Week in History Monday: Thirteen Lives Mentioned in this episode Rush: Original footage of Niki Lauda's crash Did you enjoy this episode? Jay and Mark are joined by Aaron Neuwirth (@AaronPS4 on X) for USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, in which a group of Navy sailors are attacked by sharks after their boat goes down in the Philippine Sea. On this episode, you'll also hear them talk about giggle water, Mario Van Peebles, and Thomas Jane hero posing. Enjoy!
This week Sarah and MJ are joined by returning guest Chris Hood, to talk about 2016's USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. They discuss the other films that do this type of thing better, the many, MANY Jaws connections in the movie, and MJ learns a fun new British phrase.
This week, The Pitch's Abby Olcese joins us for two Nic Cage-fronted true stories of dubious execution! First up is Larry Charles' Army of One, a grating retelling of the real-life tale of Gary Faulkner (Cage), who was arrested in Pakistan hatching a plot to kill Osama bin Laden in 2010, all for 'Murica. In theory, it could be a neat little dramedy about the self-delusion of the flag-pilled white dude; in practice, it's an annoying slog with Cage making all kinds of delusional choices (the voice he does here) and everyone's favorite kook Russell Brand as God. Things get a little better, if a little safer, with Mario Van Peebles' po-faced WWII drama USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. Peebles casts Cage as the doomed captain of the equally-ill-fated Navy ship that famously smuggled vital parts for the atomic bomb behind enemy lines, only to get shot down by a Japanese U-boat. From there comes starvation, sharks, and a whole lotta sitting around and waiting. Welcome to Friendly Fire, the war movie podcast that - if it accomplished nothing else - made you watch Come and See. I’m show producer Rob Schulte…here to announce that this is the end of the line for Friendly Fire. We’ve seen a lot of great movies together, and we’ve also seen USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. But no matter what war movie we talked about, all of us who work on the show are going to miss these conversations, and we’d like to take this moment to express our gratitude to everyone who listened, supported the show, bought merchandise, and came to see the show live. If you’re a MaxFun member who supports the show, you can update your membership at maximumfun.org/manage Thanks for a few great years of podcasting. This is Friendly Fire signing off. Nic Cage is the captain of a sinking ship, which is a great metaphor for this 2016 movie that is a disgrace to the true story it tells. Instead of watching this movie, watch the infinitely more compelling monologue about the USS Indianapolis from Jaws. But also listen to this episode, because it’s a fun one. Our guests this week are the cohosts of “Boy Detectives Presents” on Twitch.tv/2MBStudios, Anthony Zonfrelli and Will Van Antwerp.

For the month of September, Joel and Andy are watching films starring the one and only Nicolas Cage, starting with USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, the 2016 film directed by Mario Van Peebles.
USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage from 2016 is a bad film. Nicolas Cage heads a cast that drains any and all interest from this harrowing true story. Imagine turning a war story about a shipwreck, with sharks and nuclear weapons into a completely dull, plodding affair. That's exactly what this film does. The one where everyone looked confused as to why they were in a movie. Some even surprised to find out they made the movie already. The poster, however, was not an indication of this Mario Van Peebles movie which turned out to be fairly decent. The only thing Phoenix knew about the USS Indianpolis historically was that it carried the nukes that took out Japan. Yep. That is all over with less than an hour into the 2 hour 10 minute long movie. The rest of the film is...something incredibly unepected. Watch out for sharks.
