Gary recently found himself captivated by an episode of the Shawn Ryan Show, where Shawn discussed his psychedelic experience (that episode can be found HERE.) Today, Gary sits down with Shawn to find out what led him to this controversial treatment. After high school, Shawn didn't have a lot of direction, but he knew he wasn't college material. When a Navy recruiter asked Shawn if he wanted to be a Seal, he looked into it and realized it was probably the best fit for what he wanted to do. After 6 years on Seal Team 8, Shawn transitioned to the CIA, where he spent another 9 years. When he left the agency in 2015, he wasn't in a good space, and had no friends or family around, so he turned to drugs to cope. Things got out of control and Shawn knew he couldn't continue down this road. He started seeing a therapist regularly for a few years, until he moved to another state. With his tactical training business, Vigilance Elite, picking up, things started to get stressful again. Shawn had also started his own podcast, the Shawn Ryan Show, where he interviewed a lot of his former colleagues. A common theme among them was psychedelic treatment, and the more Shawn heard about it, the more he thought there might be something to this. Still relying on sleep meds, anti anxiety meds, and adderall, Shawn didn't feel present in his life, not to mention the anxiety was still there. So, he decided to make the call. Having done a lot of research on the science behind it, Shawn still was going in as a skeptic. However, he says he came out of it a completely different person, and will forever advocate for this cutting edge treatment. What You'll Learn: Why having clear intentions is key. My guest this week is former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan. Shawn served in both Iraq and Afghanistan on SEAL Teams 2 and 8. Once he finished his deployments he left the Navy and took a contractor position working for the CIA overseas. Shawn has 14 years of combat experience and fighting terrorism. While deployed he also help protect our athletes during the Olympics in Greece and developed a skill set to branch out on his own when he returned to the United States. Shawn started his own training company Vigilance Elite where he not only teaches rifle and handgun shooting classes but also some tactics for survival to law enforcement and civilians.
