In this special episode of the MUSED: LA 2 HOU podcast, host and producer Melissa Richardson Banks interviews photographer Luis C. Garza with Charlene Villaseñor Black, Ph.D. who is Chair and Professor of Art History in UCLA's César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies, the editor of "Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies" and the founding editor-in-chief of "Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture" (LALVC, UC Press). She publishes topics related to Chicanx studies, contemporary Latinx art, and the early modern Iberian world. What is decolonial love? Villaseñor Black shares that "decolonial love is a love for community and for ourselves that breaks free from coloniality, that is, the ways in which European social order, racial hierarchies, and imposed ways of knowing live on and structure our world today."Villaseñor Black states that "decolonial love manifested in Garza's photographs and, indeed, in the work of other Chicana/o/x artists and cultural workers from the beginning of the movement to the present day. By documenting the Mexican American experience of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s and 1970s, Garza's images fought against biased media representation and oppressive policing tactics. By presenting the truth of the Chicano experience and by his dignified representations of our community, Garza's photographs articulated decolonial love as they helped us visualize more just futures. This commitment to future action is central to activism and activist art."Some of Garza's most famous photographs documented activism during the Chicano movement. However, for the exhibition, curator Armando Durón strategically paired Garza's photographs to encourage viewers to make new connections with his more well-known images. While his couplings were often formal in nature, they fostered comparisons across differing subject matter. Scenes of protests, taking place in various locales -- from Los Angeles to New York to Uzbekistan and Budapest -- made clear the global nature of political unrest in the early 1970sWhile the interview was recorded on January 21, 2023, it is a timeless conversation about Garza and the images that he took while documenting the Chicano civil rights movement, the World Peace Conference in Hungary, and the women's movement in New York during the late 1960s and early 1970s."The Other Side of Memory: Photographs by Luis C. Instagram: @Luis_Villasenor_kg Instagram de Christian Assad: @MedHacker Instagram: @SinPelosEnElCactus ¡Prepárate para despedirte de los mitos más absurdos y las ideas más disparatadas sobre las dietas bajas en carbohidratos, porque en el episodio número 20 de Sin Pelos en el Cactus, vamos a destapar la olla de los secretos mejor guardados de la nutrición!

In Berkeley Talks episode 180, Dania Matos and Fabrizio Mejia, vice chancellor and associate vice chancellor, respectively, for UC Berkeley's Division of Equity and Inclusion, join Berkeley student Angelica Garcia to discuss the campus's Latinx Thriving Initiatives (LTI) and how these efforts are supporting Berkeley's goal of not only becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), but also of transforming Berkeley into a Latinx Thriving Institution.“There's a practical standpoint of this that's about becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution,” begins Matos. “That's why you'll hear HSIs a lot, and it's important in that naming and framing. Dr. Gina Garcia is a sort of national expert who talks about this, but for us, it's really taking it beyond that. Because becoming an HSI is about 25% enrollment of undergraduate students, which, by the way, the federal government does not count graduate students, and we care about graduate students here, too.“For us, we're thinking about (how to) build this ecosystem where we are honoring, bringing in more Latinx communities, but also honoring the different ways of knowing and being, which are so counter to the way U.S. higher educational system is done.“Latinx Thriving Initiatives is a multifaceted campuswide effort, but not just campus. It's really thinking and honoring our mission as a public institution, and (asking), ‘How do we center community in that?' We're not just a community center that people come to or get admitted to and leave from in four years, but a place where they're having an impact and creating that.”“It's collecting all the work that is happening,” added Mejia, “honoring that historical effort, that ongoing effort, but also asking ourselves, ‘What else? What does it look like to have a Latinx student body, Latinx staff, Latinx faculty that are all thriving from the moment they conceptualize “Is Berkeley a place for me?” to the moment they land on the campus and say, “Where do I see myself in this environment? How do I meet my aspirations? Am I getting the support all the way through?"'Listen to the full conversation in Berkeley Talks episode 180, “What are Berkeley's Latinx Thriving Initiatives?”This conversation was recorded in March 2023 as the first episode of Berkeley's Latinx Thriving Initiatives podcast, which explores what it means for Berkeley to become a Latinx Thriving Institution, and the direct impact it'll have on its Latinx-identifying campus community. It was created in partnership with Ethnic Studies Changemaker, a campus group of students plus a faculty adviser that aims to “amplify the voices and diverse experiences of marginalized communities.”Learn more about Berkeley's Latinx Thriving Initiatives and watch a video of what these efforts have accomplished over the past year on the Latinx Thriving Initiatives website.Photo by H.G. Turning Season: News & Conversations on Our Adventure Toward a Life-Sustaining Society
Adrián is one of the many people I am just so glad to know is out there, enacting The Great Turning in the ways that he is uniquely moved to do. He's a longtime facilitator of the Work that Reconnects, in Spanish and English, in North, Central and South America. I feel like I can hear in the way Adrián speaks that he is, as he calls it, a "practitioner of contemplative disciplines," who has a yearning for personal transformation and socio-ecological viability. You also might hear the influence of the lineages "of beauty, wisdom, and compassion" that he honors, including teachings of the Native Americans, Central and South American Plant Shamanism and ritual, Tibetan Buddhism and Yoga, and Daoism. Turn your ideas into a reality with Shopify: https://bit.ly/3oKx0yj After growing up as a global citizen, Rhuigi Villaseñor settled in Southern California and found his twin passions: clothing and hustle. As a teen the young design prodigy used his eye to flip vintage clothes, which fattened his pockets but also deepened his knowledge. Knowing full well what he didn't know, Rhuigi relentlessly networked and apprenticed himself until he got his first break. A single t-shirt design of his, the bandana tee, rang out locally, until, in a moment of serendipity, Kendrick Lamar wore the piece on stage at the BET Awards and everything changed. RHUDE would be born shortly thereafter, and Rhuigi would go on to create a unique language at the intersection of Americana, Luxury and Streetwear that would drive the brand to the pinnacle of cool and also to commercial success. Kev Mason Kev Mason, or KetoKev as he has become more known as, is a Ketogenic Health and Fitness Coach. After serving 13 years in the British Army and reaching a massive 131kg, he realised after leaving that something needed to be done. He discovered the Paleo Diet and from then he dropped 10kg without effort or going to the gym. Once he started losing the weight he decided to look further into health and fitness, and discovered the ketogenic diet. At first he was slightly apprehensive about high amounts of fat but decided to go for it. Nothing happened apart from gaining weight. Confused about this newfound "wonder diet" he looked deeper and deeper into how to optimize keto for the best result. Trying and failing a few times he finally nailed the right path of a higher protein and med to high fat ratio then things started to happen but Kev still had a skeleton in his closet. He still consumed alcohol and in March 2019 after being threatened with divorce he sunk to the lowest point of his life, he took charge of his life, quit drinking and applied all the knowledge he had into building a Keto group to help himself and others. He gained qualifications and diplomas in The Ketogenic Diet & Diabetes recognition and treatment, began courses in Red Light Therapy, Cold exposure, personal training and the gut brain connection. He began coaching clients and started turning lives around including his own. With a facebook group of over 15,000 people and private coaching groups he now creates content and information to help as many people as he can. Although not a qualified Chef, Kev has had formal training with Jeremy Ravenshaw-Fowler and would rather be known as a Cuisinier rather than a Chef. Slowly, the youth galvanized mission of stopping climate change before we face its permanent impacts is becoming less of a reality, yet still young voices (not just Great Thunburge) emerge every day voicing their concern for the future. Among them is Alexandria Villeseñor. At just 16, she has organized numerous international climate strikes, among them, the strikes the week of september 20th 2019 where over 12 million young people across 150 countries protested for climate action. It was at this event, in New York City, I saw Alexandria speak.
