Short Instructions for Metta Meditation
What can a child's mind do concerning compassion? In this podcast, Bhante Sathi explores the all too often dilemma between “wishing happiness” on others versus executing that action. Unlike a child-like perspective on the world, we unconsciously create barriers and walls of identity that make up who we think we are. But by developing a child-like sense of self and expectation, we can break down those barriers and cultivate the inner freedom required to extend genuine compassion for all living things. Welcome to the Spiritually Fit Yoga podcast with Amelia Andaleon! It's Day 19 of our 30-day mini-meditation series and we'll practice a loving-kindness meditation, a Buddhist meditation called Metta Bhavana. Metta can be translated as 'loving-kindness' while 'Bhavana' means 'development'. So the Metta Bhavana is the 'Development of Loving Kindness'.This gentle guided meditation invites you into the heart-centered practice of loving-kindness, or metta. Soften the nervous system, reconnect with compassion, and extend goodwill—beginning with yourself and rippling outward to others.

Episode 388: What Am I Made For? INTRODUCTION EPISODE NOTES I did it! I am excited to share with you the introduction to “What Am I Made For? Incubate and Birth Big and Little Ideas.” The book will be available in the first quarter of 2026. My marketing team at Manuscripts.com is working on book covers. Which book cover above best matches the book title? You can respond to my post on LinkedIn. Here is an excerpt of the introduction. You can listen to the whole introduction in this podcast episode. “We all have ideas buzzing in our minds, like bees in a hive waiting to take flight. Most of those ideas remain in the hive and never get implemented, despite the best intentions. One of the biggest roadblocks is us. We often deviate from the natural flow of life and spend too much time in storms of chaos and rigidity without integrating our experiences.1 In other words, we sabotage our progress. There are other ways ideas get tanked, which I will address later, but the most significant outlier is us. The first point of contact with an idea is in our mind. Once conceived, our actions, decisions, and behaviors are the primary factors that affect the outcome of our ideas, before external factors have a significant influence. Knowing we sabotage our progress begs me to ask a few questions.2 What if you knew you were born to incubate and give birth to new ideas? Would you be more likely to implement your ideas and commit to self-growth? Would you spend less time on the banks of chaos and rigidity, struggling to swim upstream, and more time riding with the current in the flow of life, refining ideas that work? Would you be less likely to rain on someone else's parade of ideas? If you answer yes to all the questions, this book is for you. If your answers varied, this book is still for you. I want to help expand your capacity to incubate and bring to life a wide range of ideas, both big and small. With effort, you can become proficient in generating, refining, and implementing ideas. If we work together and understand how to support each other during the birthing process, as midwives do, we not only enhance our sense of worthiness, well-being, and prosperity but also can significantly improve our troubled world. We need more of us to implement ideas from the inside out and the outside in.” I would like you to listen to the complete introduction HERE. DOWNLOAD Episode Resources Presale Book Campaign What Am I Made For? Podcast Episode Frank Ostaseski, The Five Intentions NEXT STEP: Challenge yourself and do the three Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring (C.A.L.M.) Activities, below. Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring After listening, do these three C.A.L.M. Activities: 1. Take this risk or do this adventurous task: Listen to the introduction to “What Am I Made For? Incubate and Birth Big and Little Ideas.” 2. Apply Self-Compassion: Try this Metta Meditation exercise again from Frank Ostaseski. He suggests doing this meditation after you meet someone new. Sit quietly. Take a moment to pause and tune into your feelings. Allow the person you just met to appear in your mind. Once you finish saying the meditation aloud, sit quietly and send loving kindness to this person. Then, observe how you feel after generating loving kindness. “This person has a body, heart, and mind, just like me. This person worries and gets frightened, just like me. This person is trying their best to navigate life, just like me. This person is a fellow human being, just like me. Allow some benevolent wishes for well-being to arise: May this person have the strength and support to face the difficulties in life. May this person be free from suffering and its causes. May this person be peaceful and happy. May this person be loved.” (2017, The Five Invitations: Discovering What Death Can Teach Us About Living Fully, p. 168) 3. Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate you. Thank you in advance for listening to my book introduction. Writing is a true labor of love. I appreciate the team at Manuscripts Press. They are remarkably skilled editors, teachers, coaches, and marketers. I am grateful for this year-and-a-half-long process to get published. The hybrid route is more labor-intensive, but worth it to retain my creative rights. I am grateful to beta readers: Matthew, Olivia, Gordon, Jan, Deb, and Drew. Your insights made this book better. I appreciate every backer who has supported me thus far. Without this small village, I would not have reached the finish line. Your dreams are worth pursuing, and I can attest to the benefits of launching new ideas. I have never received this much support ever in my life. I appreciate how I have changed. My heart has expanded. I am grateful for this experience, and am eager to meet the readers of my book in 2026.” It's your turn. Start with, “I appreciate what I learned from today’s Mentor, Nancy Meyer. I appreciate this week's adventurous task because…” “Most of the problems in our lives and world are caused by relational dysfunction, a dysfunction in how we relate: as social groups, as individuals, to animals and the environment, and even to ourselves. Therefore, developing relational literacy—the understanding of and ability to practice healthy ways of relating—is essential for personal, social, and ecological transformation.” —Melanie Joy, psychologist, author, theorist, educator When WeMentor… your life becomes more meaningful!!! Redefine how you lead while redesigning your business. Dual Innovation Leadership WORKS. Entrenovation Mentor Nancy Meyer, MA Business and Life Mentor | Podcaster | Author | Mindfulness Yogi and Meditation Integrator I integrate mindfulness yoga into everything because breathing, meditation, and movement are essential as you change your life and how you lead. I have a compassionate, collaborative approach that reinforces resilience and maintains accountable conversations supporting your evolution. Bottom Line: My top priority is your transformation and creating a meaningful life through business ownership. You will learn new skills, practice, evolve, innovate, expand marketing efforts, and prosper financially. We start with your desire to develop as a leader. To give you more background, I founded WeMentor, inc. in 1992 to promote Dual Innovation Leadership, the ability to evolve how you lead as you redesign your business model. To grow our businesses, we must lead differently when our perspective shifts. The thousands of brave leaders I have mentored succeeded by taking charge of how they evolved and learned how to respond to the unpredictable nature of business ownership by innovating on purpose (asserting self-leadership). When your perspective shifts, your intuition nudges you into a growth process so you can learn how to lead differently. As you practice new ways of leading, you notice ways to change your business. It is like remodeling. We start with a plan when we embark on a remodeling project. When we implement the plan, obstacles challenge us to adjust our mindset, gather further information, and brainstorm other options. Adapting the plan to fit our new reality is part of every remodeling project. Budgets always need adjusting, and we need to update our approach to complete the innovation. What I love about renovating our businesses is that new ideas emerge, and the project usually has an even better result. We feel changed through the process and have learned many details about remodeling that we can apply in our next project. HEAR why I am doing this podcast and subscribe HERE. Get inspired with resources and tools to support your transformation. We post new conversations regularly! You can also binge and listen to prior podcast conversations. Another thing to know about Dual Innovation Leadership is that you can rebound and recover from trauma, distractions, destructive habits, thoughtlessness, confusion, pointlessness, helplessness, overwork, stress, and suffering as you transform how you lead. Integrating our experiences is exhilarating as we evolve how we lead and redesign our lifework. Take the opportunity to change. Assert the next phase of self-leadership development, contact me. If Buddhism focuses on the here and now, why does Metta Meditation extend to “invisible beings,” and what are they? In this podcast, Bhante Sathi illustrated that Metta meditation helps us open our hearts to all beings—those we see and those we don't—by recognizing that everyone wants to be happy. It teaches us to let go of attachment to physical forms and to respond to others with compassion and understanding. By practicing this, we can stay connected, forgive, and love even when people, pets, and all beings pass away, seeing the person beyond their body.

In this podcast, Bhante explores the true nature of Metta (loving-kindness) practice, distinguishing it from simply wishing or praying for others, which often involves hidden expectations that can lead to disappointment. It emphasizes that genuine Metta begins with compassionate self-understanding—treating oneself with forgiveness, care, and wisdom—which then extends naturally to others, including difficult family members and coworkers. Through this practice, we cultivate unconditional love and emotional resilience, recognizing that harmful behavior often comes from others' helplessness, and choosing to respond with clarity, compassion, and peace.

This episode of the podcast is a guided meditation-in-motion, intended as a dynamic (yet gentle) way to explore Metta or Lovingkindness Meditation. You might think of it as a complement or alternative to the traditional seated Metta Meditation practice. (The meditation itself will start at ~ 3:30 after a brief introduction.) Metta means lovingkindness, goodwill, friendliness, or benevolence. We'll be using simple Qigong-inspired movements to invoke and express kindness for ourselves and for others. Classic Metta Meditations often use the repetition of phrases like “May I (or you, or all beings) be safe, May I (you/all beings) be happy, May I (you/all beings) be healthy, May I (you/all beings) live with ease.” Our movements themselves can be done in a way that promotes the sense of safety, happiness, health, and ease, AND I will invite you to layer in the phrases along with the movements to strengthen the intention. The movements in this meditation will include a Qigong form called "Waterfall," in which we'll imagine gathering goodness, and then showering ourselves with that benevolent energy. Then, with "Pebble in the Pond," our movement will symbolize sending our Metta wishes out as ripples in the peaceful water. My goal was to describe the movements clearly enough so you could follow along with just the audio. It's definitely ok to just approximate what you imagine I'm describing - the spirit of kindness and goodwill is what we're trying to bring forward here, rather than precise, perfect movements. It's meant to be more like a guided meditation that just happens to involve moving your body. This meditation can be done either standing or seated in a chair. You can have your eyes open or close them, but if you're standing, you may find that keeping them open (with a soft gaze) helps your balance. I hope you will enjoy this moving meditation, and that it will invite a sense of kindness, embodiment, connection, and ease. ------------- For more links and resources mentioned in this episode, find the show notes at movedtomeditate.yoga/podcast. Ajahn Dhammasiha is asked about supportive conditions to make our Metta Meditation (Loving Kindness) stronger and more successful: Loving Kindness to Oneself! Make sure you really include yourself when you extend Mettā to all beingsCompassion (Karuna). Use other Divine Abidings (Brahmavihāra) as appropriate, in particular Compassion/Karunā. If we struggle to extend metta to anyone, we may be more successful with Karuna. The most difficult people often have a lot of pain themselves. Once we see that, it's easier to have compassion to them.Contemplating Karma (Kamma). What I experience is the result of my own karma, my own actions, including actions in past lives. On a deeper level, the person hurting me is simply returning my own bad karma to me. Also, they will have to bear the painful result of their own karma in future, no need for me the avenger or punisher, they will get their karma anyhow. Contemplating Impermanence (Anicca-Saññā). What we're so upset with today, we may not even be able to remember in a years time. Why getting worked up about anything so evanescent Contemplating Death. If I were to die today, would I really bother about all these irritations I experience? Compared to the reality of our & our 'enymies'' mortality, what we're angry about appears so irrelevant.Sense Retraint (Indriya-samvara/Indriyesu Guttadvāra). Simply avoid persons and situations that make you angry, and don't even think about or remember them.Don't look at the tweets of a politician you can't stand. Don't watch that video, or those news, if they make you angry. Wise Attention (Yoniso Manasikāra). Focus on what's beautiful in others and yourself. Give attention to your own and others' kind and admirable qualities and actions. Contentment. Count your blessings. Appreciate what you have already, rather than hankering after things other have, and which may be difficult to obtain. Gratitude (Kataññū-Katavedi). Remember all the good you have received from others. Focus on that, rather than on the hard times other have given you.Good Friends (Kalyāṇamittatā). She completes the meditation with her poem, "March on Meadowbrook Road".March, on Meadowbrook Road, by Julie Potiker.Down the way from the old Triumph mine, Narrow-leaf Willow, a rust-colored and wild, leans into the breeze.Rubber Rabbit-brush waits in stillness, not yet yellow - there's room here forwhat takes time. Basin Wild Rye a parchment scrap from last year's book, whispers its end in a papery rush.Between patches of snow, soft ground starts to look like something breathing. My boots sink low - just enough to remind me there's life below, waiting to rise, quiet as roots, steady and slow, without need for applause.Chickadees gossip - Black-capped, mountain, in stereo tones stitched through the trees, voices bright. A Northern Flicker taps at Aspens, bare as bones. Does it know the language that flows beneath this frost? Roots that spill messages deep, a network unseen holding hands in sleep. And I stand there, Stetson tipped just right, letting the sun do what it does best - warm my cheek. Then whatever arises as you sit—thoughts, people, images, concerns—will be held in that kindness.” – Jack KornfieldThis episode is brought to you by Betterhelp. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/heartwisdom and get on your way to being your best self. This week on Heart Wisdom, Jack offers listeners instruction on:Metta and invoking the spirit of love within ourselves Holding all that arises during meditation with kindness Letting our body have a sense of care and well being Allowing ourselves to soften, relax, and rest easily Feeling completely supported by the earth below us Opening our hearts and minds via the metta sutta of loving-kindness Suffusing the whole world with unobstructed, sublime love“The ideal as you practice is to find your own way, to find what most naturally resonates with yourself as a gateway to open the heart.” – Jack KornfieldThis episode was originally recorded for the Spirit Rock Meditation Center Monday Night Dharma Talk and Guided Meditation Livestream for Feb 2025.
