Did you know that football star Cristiano Ronaldo is somewhat of an investor himself? Today we're going to talk to a company that he has recently invested in – and that's online luxury watch resale marketplace Chrono24.  Founded in 2003, Chrono24 prides itself as the number one address for luxury watches for commercial watch dealers and private sellers from around the world.  It currently has over 30,000 professional dealers and private sellers from over 120 countries offer more than 500,000 watches. The company's website sees over half a million visitors everyday.  In 2020, in particular, it saw watches worth about 2 billion euros transacted through the platform. But what is the demand for luxury watches right now with economies slowing down, interest rates going up, and with cryptocurrencies tumbling?  Also – with prices of Swiss watches near the lowest in almost two years amid falling prices of Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet models, what does this mean for platforms like Chrono24 which charge a fee out of every transaction? And how far can Rolex and AP's move to certify pre-owned watches boost the secondary watch market? On Under the Radar, Drive Time's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian sat down with Tim Stracke, Co-CEO and Founder, Chrono24 for more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

They start the show talking about some of the major roles and accomplishments that Danny has had in the watch industry over his career starting in 1981 selling vintage time pieces. They talk about what brands were dominating in the 80's that are still going strong today such as Rolex, when the markets of jewelry and watches started to separate, and what the industry looks like today in comparison. They talk about what it was like to be the person who would go to Switzerland to retrieve pieces that were highly wanted in America but not widely available, what he is doing at Watchbox today that is so different from their competitors, and how the customer is truly the main focus for them always. My guest today is Niraj Shah, the CEO and co-founder of Wayfair. Wayfair started life in 2002 as a collection of independent websites selling category-specific home furniture but became a one-stop-shop for the home category in 2011 when, at $500 million in sales, the team consolidated their 240 websites into Wayfair.com. Today, the business offers 22 million products from 16 thousand suppliers to more than 30 million customers.   During our conversation, we discuss how the competitive frontiers in e-commerce have changed, what it was like to build out a proprietary logistics operation, and what makes the home goods market more attractive than other physical goods markets. My guest today is Will Marshall, the co-founder and CEO of Planet. Will founded Planet in 2010 with a small team of NASA scientists to build a constellation of satellites that would image the entire Earth every day. Since then, Planet has successfully built and deployed 450 satellites into space, which the company is using to create a time series of images for every place on Earth.   Our conversation covers the untold space story. How space is going through an internet moment where cost reductions and performance enhancements have led to a seismic shift in what's possible above our atmosphere, and how that can drastically improve life on Earth through unique datasets like the one Planet is piecing together.   Once you listen to Will speak about Planet's progress and mission, it's hard to think of a more underappreciated company in business today.   Please enjoy this great conversation with Will Marshall.   For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here.   ------   This episode is brought to you by Canalyst. We talk about how his military service prepared him for his current role as “The Watch Specialist” for Watchbox, and how his first 800 Watch-related videos were shot to differentiate his content from that of blogs such as HODINKEE. Needless to say Tim was onto something, and much, much more. I wanted to get to know the man under the Oakley's and today you will, too. South African-born professional explorer Mike Horn has lived a heck of a life. He's sailed around the world 27 times, walked around it three times, crossed Antarctica and summited some of the world's highest peaks. And he's down much of it with a Panerai on his wrist. But before we get to Mike, Andy and Felix chat about some of Panerai's latest releases and just how they feel about scratching up their watches. Fair warning, though, neither of them have submitted their watch to even a fraction of the abuse that Mike Horn's Panerai's have endured. Mike tells us about the time he used his watch as a piton, but also what drives him into the wild, and what the point of exploration is when the map has been filled in, and what it's like to witness climate change first hand. Not only has his experience made him a perfect ambassador for Panerai for the last 21 years, but it's made him the perfect person to push Panerai down the path of sustainability. The second we aired our first interview with James Dowling in 2020, we knew we had to have him back on for part two. It might have taken us 12 months, but it worth the wait. This time around, we talk about Rolex (I mean, when you're known online as @MisterRolex is kind of comes up), but our conversation takes some unexpected turns, like investing in tins of sardines. In fact, we talk about Dowling's love of exploring the 'dead ends' of watches, small manufacturers, Swiss quartz from the 70s and 80s (including his prototype Rolex Quartz Perpetual calendar), deck watches and other ephemera. James also reluctantly gives his advice to new collectors, who he believes have a much harder time finding interesting and accessible watches than earlier generations of collectors, given that the internet has largely taken away the joy of discovery. Today's episode is action-packed in more ways than one. Of course, the top billing goes to Jason Heaton, a product journalist who's penned his first novel, But before that, we have some action of a different kind, with Andy chatting to Mike Manjos from WatchBox, about the winners from Watches & Wonders. Then it's straight into the thriller that is Depth Charge. Heaton bills it as a classic paperback page-turner in the vein of Cussler or Fleming, with a healthy dose of diving, and of course, dive watches. And while Heaton doesn't reveal the watch his hero ended up wearing in the book, we do talk about the challenges of writing (and researching) a novel during a pandemic, updating thriller tropes while making them relevant for a modern audience. Of course, we also chat about the in-depth character development of a pivotal character and probably great guy, the henchman known as 'Scholz'. Back when Jason Heaton was first on the podcast, Felix petitioned strongly to be included as an evil henchman in the novel. Fast forward to today, and Felix's wish has been granted, with Scholz being described as an angular man with a shaved head and a moustache. What hasn't been revealed yet is if Henchman Scholz wears a watch. So we thought we'd have a little fun. Over on Instagram, we're running a comp where the best suggestion for Scholz's watch will win a signed copy of Depth Charge. Don't miss out. This episode is brought to you by WatchBox, the world's leading platform for buying, selling and trading pre-owned luxury timepieces. Zoe has worked for names we all know and recognize in her tenure in the industry such as Antiquorum, Crown&Caliber, and WatchBox to name a few. Zoe has been in Hong Kong for the last three years. She discusses the difference between the Hong Kong market and the US market, what brands are popular in Asia vs. the US, and other trends that are emerging in this very wealthy market. Of course, it would not be a collector conversation if we didn't discuss Zoe's personal collection. She is the first person to wrist check a Patek Philippe on our podcast, as well as the first guest who currently resides in Asia! We also discuss the Rolex Oyster Perpetual(s) that are in her collection, the story behind how she obtained them, as well as her obsession with the JLC Reverso. Zoe has some excellent stories, is a genuinely fun person to chat with, and has a special Mixed Tap dropping soon you won't want to miss!

Danny Govberg is a pioneering force of the contemporary watch industry. His vision and insatiable passion for watches and technology enabled the evolution of Govberg from a Philadelphia-based retail shop to one of the world's premier authorized dealers of both new and pre-owned timepieces.  Danny recognized years ago that selling new watches was only one way to support the life of a watch collector and set in motion a tech forward, pre-owned strategy that inspired the evolution of the global ecommerce website WatchBox. Everybody loves a David and Goliath story. The problem is, in business these days, the David is usually a family business, and the Goliath is some technology-juicing giant. Goliath is usually winning.  So here's a story that returns to classic form: Danny Govberg is the CEO of Govberg Jewelers in Philadelphia – and he's also the CEO of Watchbox, an app and website that's shaking up the world of luxury watches. By Govberg's count, he's selling at a rate of $200 million worth of watches this year between the two businesses, much of it in brands like Rolex, Patek Phillipe and Omega – brands that run in the thousands and tens of thousands of dollars per watch. And he says he's growing more than 30% a year.  All of this is happening while the popular narrative is stacked against him. Supposedly hardly anyone wears watches anymore, and for those that do, the Apple Watch and Samsung Watch are running roughshod over the market. Well? That's not the whole story.  I met Danny Govberg at the Breitling Boutique on Madison Avenue in Manhattan – you'll hear the sounds of the store and some construction next door. We talked about how the business evolved from his immigrant grandfather's beginnings as a watchmaker, and why technology is growing his old family business while it's killing others.
