We're thrilled to welcome professional triathlete turned professional trail runner Eli Hemming to the show. Jess and BJ followed Eli's career through Olympic distance draft-legal racing on the world stage until he chose to step away from his career as a professional triathlete. Despite being ranked #1 in the U.S. because of his multiple World Cup podiums, Eli's happiness factor was falling, and he could no longer ignore that it was time for a radical change. When he hit the trail running scene in 2021, he immediately found success qualifying for the 2022 Mountain Running Championships, and when he crossed over from sub-ultra to ultra-distance racing with a 2nd at the Way Too Cool. He finished that year with several podiums but did not claim victory at a race until 2023, a year of continued improvements and highlights like placing 2nd at the Marathon Du Mont Blanc. Since the calendar turned to 2024, he's been on a winning streak; it's almost as if the trails have been patiently awaiting his arrival. Jess and BJ caught up with Eli less than a week after he took the win at the Big Alta 50k by over 20 minutes in a cool 3:38:33, an incredible feat considering this race came on the heels of crushing his competition at the Black Canyon 60k just two weeks prior, where he broke the tape by 30 minutes over 2nd place in 4:06:39. Smoking fast! Thanks so much for tuning in. If you enjoy the show, please leave a review on your favorite place to listen to it. You can also support the commercial-free nature of the YTP and Awake Athlete podcasts by joining our Patreon community. In this episode: - The feeling of winning - Finding fulfillment now - Hot from the start or slow build? - Opportunities for growth in his trail running skills - Knowing where the bar is set with competition - Racing in Europe versus the US - Routine philosophy - Importance of specificity of racing - Black Canyon Ultra goals - Why don't we fuel enough while racing? - Big Alta learnings on nutrition - Golden Trail World Series - The uprising of sub-ultra racing - What does happiness feel like

It's our first interview ever, with our favorite human and athlete in the world! Clare Gallagher won the 2022 Leadville 100 Miler in the 5th-fastest time ever just 36 hours before we recorded the interview. A historic 100 mile win and a 75-minute podcast episode are both equal feats of endurance in our eyes. Clare is a running legend, with wins at Western States, Leadville, CCC, Black Canyon 100k, and the Way Too Cool 50k, all by age 30. But even more importantly, she is a brilliant and world-changing human who is an environmental advocate about to embark on a new journey with marine protection. There aren't many people in the world and thoughtful, caring, and inspiring as Phil Shin. It was an absolute honor to have Phil on the show. He has endured liver cancer twice, received a liver transplant, run multiple marathons, qualified for Boston, and that doesn't even come close to summarizing what this man has accomplished for himself and others. Phil ran the 2022 Boston Marathon along with his good friend and live liver donor Mark Murphy. It was a special weekend for both men as it was Mark's first marathon and Phil was able to honor his friend's sacrifice, that saved his life, in grand fashion. About This Episode:In this week’s episode, Hillary Allen interviews ultrarunner and fellow CTS Coach Stephanie Howe, Ph.D. They discuss Stephanie’s approach to running, nutrition, and experiences during and after her pregnancy. As well as Stephanie’s view on being a mother and an athlete and message to others to not have to choose between the two.Episode Highlights:Balancing being a mother and athletePracticing grace and patience with your new body Navigating running pre and post-pregnancyCommon misconceptions about pregnancy and nutritionGuest Bio – Stephanie Howe, Ph.D.:I grew up in Minnesota, where I developed my affinity for cold winters and Nordic skiing. I participated in pretty much every sport there was (hello fastpitch softball!), until my junior year of high school where I decided my genetics better suited me for endurance sports. I attended Northern Michigan University on a Nordic ski scholarship, where I was a two-time All-American in cross country running. No, not a typo. I “tried really hard” to be a skier, but was a much more talented runner. After graduated NMU with a B.S. in Exercise Science, I pursued a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from Montana State University. Bozeman Montana is where I really fell in love with running in the mountains. But it wasn’t until I moved to Oregon that I started to dabble in trail and ultra races. While starting to explore the trails a bit more, I completed my Ph.D. in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology from Oregon State University. My dissertation study examined the impact of exercise intensity on appetite hormones in elite female runners. Fitting. Upon graduating, I worked as a professor at Oregon States and COCC (community college in Bend, OR), but ultimately decided I wanted to pursue nutrition and coaching. In 2012 I started a nutrition business, working to help all walks of people learn to eat better for health and/or performance. I did a bit of coaching on the side, but really started coaching with CTS at the end of 2019. I’m thrilled to be working with athletes, as I learn as much from them and they do from me.I currently compete, mostly in ultramarathon races, but also dabble in a bit of everything: nordic skiing, skimo, cyclocross, gravel races, adventure racing, climbing, paddling, etc. You name it, I’ve probably tried it. My favorite place is in the mountains, preferably the Alps. I have raced Western States 100 (2014 Champion), UTMB, CCC, Lake Sonoma 50, Bandera 100k, Way Too Cool 50k, and many, many other races.Read More About Stephanie Howe, Ph.D.:Website: https://trainright.com/coaches/stephanie-howe/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephaniemariehoweFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/stephaniehowerunsListen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform

Anna Mae is actually a recent entry into the world of ultramarathons. She debuted at the 2015 Way Too Cool 50k - only to have her finish time qualify as a top-10 all-time performance. Today, her sponsors include: HOKA ONE ONE Suunto Honey Stinger She's the current course record holder (and 2019 winner) of the Speedgoat 50 Miler. You can usually find her exploring trails and mountains near her home in Marble, Colorado. Anna Mae joins me on the Strength Running Podcast to discuss her training. Specifically, we talk about: The (big) role cross-training plays in her ultramarathon preparation How she mitigates and takes advantage of altitude What a typical, heavy training day looks like for her Her average weekly mileage and vertical gain How she recovers after a 100 miler vs. a 50k ultra Injury prevention strategies for ultra runners (and the rest of us!) These problems could lead to reduced performance or injury so learn what's wrong so you can take action to improve.
Today you’re going to hear from three Ultramarathoners on how they fuel for races, what their post long run fueling looks like, and how things might be different if they were training for shorter races. It’s helpful to study ultramarathoners when it comes to fueling, even if you have no interest in running ultra distances, because it’s here that fueling becomes virtually as important as the training itself. It doesn’t matter how fit you are if you don’t fuel well as an ultra runner... We’re doing this today because we’re celebrating the relaunch of our fueling program Finish Strong. I’ve added new material, updated our fueling schedules, included more expert interviews, and there’s now an extra discount for Tailwind Nutrition. You can see all the details of Finish Strong here. Abby Hall placed 8th at CCC earlier this year (which is known as UTMB’s sister race). Anna Mae Flynn won the Speedgoat 50k this year and Abby Levene placed 9th at this year’s Way Too Cool 50k. I’m going to ask all three of these athletes the same 3 questions: How do you fuel during an ultramarathon? Give us an overview of what that looks like. When you finish a long run, what does your post-run fueling look like? How would you fuel different for workouts and long runs if you were training for a shorter event like, say a 10k?
After a too-long absence, the Shawangunk Express is back in the co-pilot's chair for our kind-of-monthly roundup of all the goings-on in the ultra and trail scenes. We start by recapping a second straight no-finishers year at Barkley (2:30) before digging in to all the hullabaloo surrounding the most recent Golden Ticket race, the Georgia Death Race (9:45). Then it's time for a whirlwind tour of all the ultra results we've missed, including the Fourmidable 50K, Way Too Cool, Black Canyons, Chuckanut, and much more (23:35). Plus, we lament the rash of early-season injuries (49:15), and a very brief preview of this weekend's upcoming showdown at Lake Sonoma (51:15).Beer for this episode: Other Half 4th Anniversary Imperial IPALinks:Stephanie Case's recap from BarkleyAJW on the GDR controversyUS teams for the World Trail ChampionshipsLake Sonoma start listIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "The Mountains Win Again" by Blues Traveler

Paddy O'Leary is an Irish transplant who on October 13 set the FKT on the East Bay Skyline Trail, running 32.61 miles in 4 hours, 18 minutes, 12 seconds. He was training for the TNF50, where he was 5th place last year; he's also been 3rd at Chuckanut and 4th at Way Too Cool. So what's a young fast guy like Paddy doing running an FKT? "When I moved to the Bay Area 5 years ago I didn't run at all, I was a Lacrosse player who moved here for work. Then I fell in with a bad crew, that peer-presured me into running ultras." "It dawned on me that in Ireland I was a very good lacrosse player but in America, I was one of the weakest players, whereas with running, l was actually pretty decent at it. In the space of 14 months, I went from a half marathon to 100km race." His advice? "I try to take a lot of calories on board every 30 minutes, about 300 to 400 calories an hour. Outside racing, I don't follow a nutritional plan. The marginal gains achieved by having a restricted diet would turn into marginal losses for me because I'd be giving up the enjoyment I get out of food and beer." "Until we're able to speak about this racism as something that's coming out of 'us' -- and here I'm speaking particularly as a white person -- out of our culture more broadly, then we don't have a chance of really trying to handle what this persistent racism is."
Today I have a conversation with my ultra running coach, David Roche. David is not only a great runner - he’s the 2016 Way Too Cool 50k winner, the 2012 and 2014 USA Trail 10k National Champion, the 2014 US Sub-Ultra Trail Runner of the Year, a member of the 2014 US Mountain Running Team, the 2015 US Long Distance Mountain Team, and the 2017 US Trail World Champs team. David is also great coach, with a strong community and has athletes crushing it over various distances every weekend. (Like Cat Bradley who was one of the 2.5% of people that got a ticket to Western States in the lottery and went on to WIN) But as the title of his blog spot is… Some Work, ALL Play lays down his life philosophy of having fun. Yes it’s the trials of miles for success but love of the process and understanding that We are stardust with delusions of grandeur. And None of this stuff matters except the memories we make. So DECIDE to MAKE good memories no matter what. There’s a lot to learn in that view point and also loads to learn in my conversation that applies to any endurance sport. David made this call work off a mountain in Colorado to fit this in, so at times there’s a little wind disturbance towards the end as a thunderstorm was rolling in but it’s all good. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Coaching, Performance and getting the ingredients right. Exposing Talent The trials of miles the miles of trials and why it matters The big reasons of being an athlete The first pre requisite of an athlete so you don’t sell yourself short and allows you to become the best you can become. How to build belief in oneself Comparisons the thief of joy The problem with focusing only on the outcome Depression and post race blues Ego based training Why you need a what’s next And much more.
