In December 2024, Sunrise announced the newest Gundam TV series coming in 2025 titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux. Created by the minds behind hit anime Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL, what universal secret is GQuuuuuux hiding? Just how many u's are in GQuuuuuux? How do you even pronounce GQuuuuuux for that matter? Who gave the White Base a green paint wash and go-fast stripes? Brian fears he might be the old man yelling at clouds while Isaac demands those Zaku hips must be lying. Will there be sparkles and Gundam guitars? What about the Doms? We'll find out in 2025!

Fuji recounts some of the horrible experiences he has had in Fandom over the years and Ash talks about the Gundam Fandom's pretty vile reaction to GundamNerd's GBWC USA 2018 win. Topic: Gundam Franchise Tutorial So no more Star Wars, okay a little, but we promise to be Brief. Thanks to a generous Christmas present from a younger brother, we have our Next topic for this week and the next. We’re talking about one of the most popular franchise of giant robots series, We’re talking about GUNDAM. Tutorial To understand Gundam, you must know about the history of Giant/Super Robo/Robot series and Real Robot Series• Giant/Super Robo/Robot series have their giant robots in a more fantastical element, where the physics and logic are not explained and are not treated with in realistic or believable sense. It’s the argument, “Magic Happens.” Star Wars as an example.• Real Robot series, as originated by Gundam, attempts to explain/rationalize their physics and universe. Aside from a leap in technology or finding some kind of new element or power source, the series is treated as though it could happen. Star Trek as an example. Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) Also known as (Gundam 0079) During the Universal Century, Human have created colonies in space, but there is unease as spacenoids feel that the Earth Federation won’t allow equal representation, thus Spacenoid rally around the Principality of Zeon and declare their freedom from Earth Federation, starting the “One Year War”. Zeon has mobile suits, which are a ‘HUGE’ tactical advantage. Earth Federation Create the White Base and goes to pick up the new RX-78 Gundam, but Zeon is in tow and attacks the colony, killing most civilians and Federation crew. Amuro Ray becomes pilot for Gundam and the White Base launches out to defend against Zeon on their way home to Earth. The end is near for Mobile Suit Gundam, as this set of episodes – #26-38 – find the crew of the White Base becoming fully integrated into the Federation’s forces, visiting the military’s biggest base of operations, and returning to space for an assault on the Zeon stronghold of Solomon and, finally, a duel…in Texas! It’s another sterling set of episodes, this bunch more action-packed than ever, but also dense with revelations and major plot developments, culminating in a series of major reveals that reshape the stakes of the conflict and where our major characters stand, with just five episodes left to go. We’ll get to those next time, but for now, this is an incredibly juicy, wildly entertaining, and as always shockingly sobering set of episodes worth diving deep with. As we hit the middle stretch of Mobile Suit Gundam and discuss episodes 14 through 25, the show gets increasingly dark, with the challenges faced by the crew of the White Base growing ever more perilous. We’re introduced to new foes like M’quve and Kycilia Zabi, alongside the inimitable Ramba Ral and his companion Hamon, enemies who present Amuro and Bright their fiercest opponents yet, but are also perhaps the most honorable and upstanding characters on the series to date. As the lines between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ grow ever blurrier, the body count starts piling up, and series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino more than earns his nickname, “Kill ‘Em All Tomino.” It’s another terrific, if frequently depressing, set of episodes, as we round the halfway point of the series and head into the back half full steam ahead. The end is near for Mobile Suit Gundam, as this set of episodes – #26-38 – finds the crew of the White Base becoming fully integrated into the Federation's forces, visiting the military's biggest base of operations, and returning to space for an assault on the Zeon stronghold of Solomon and, finally, a duel…in Texas! It's another sterling set of episodes, this bunch more action-packed than ever, but also dense with revelations and major plot developments, culminating in a series of major reveals that reshape the stakes of the conflict and where our major characters stand, with just five episodes left to go. We'll get to those next time, but for now, this is an incredibly juicy, wildly entertaining, and as always shockingly sobering set of episodes worth diving deep with. Welcome to another "great" (mileage may vary) episode of White Base Chronicles! Now that we've got the introductory stuff out of the way, we're onto full-fledged action for this episode. There's a lot of gunfire, explosions, tears, and peeing of pants. This episode is all about one thing and one thing only: The Gundam's Activation. Oh...and I guess the human cost of war but who cares?! There's a giant robot turning on! Topic: Mecha Anime This week, Mom is out on Vacation, traveling the world as usual. So we Invited my Little Brother to join us. When asked what he wanted to learn about, Mecha Anime was what he said. So here we go. A primer on Mecha Anime! Tutorial: Mecha Anime: Any anime/manga/media where robots exist within a show, and are important to the story being told. Robot = Mech/Mecha Two Major Sub-Categories: Super/Giant Robo/Robot Real Robot History: 70s – Rise of Super/Giant Robot Series Mecha shows easier to handle because you don’t need to draw faces. Easier to produce in 70s. Shows largely not about war/conflicts between humans. Mazinger Z (1972) Dr Hell and Dr. Kabuto find ancient robots buried underground. Hell decides to use the robots to control the world, while Dr. Kabuto escapes and builds Mazinger Z before being killed by “half Man, Half woman” Baron Ashura. Robot is passed on his grandson Kouji Kabuto, who fights against Doctor Hell. Spin Offs Great Mazinger (1974) UFO Robot Grendizer (1977) Mazinkaiser (2002) Getter Robo (1974) Three jets become one Super Robo, but can reconfigure in to three different modes Daikū Maryū Gaiking (1976) Dinosaur like base ship where the head takes off and transforms in to Super Robo Gaiking Super/Giant Robot Series Robots are unique, one of kind, un-replaceable Fantastical/Squishy in tech/creation Heroic in Nature Stories are usually involve the Robots more as a major element of the show than a tool Magical/Mystical/Extraterrestrial/Super Science in Nature Lend themselves to Monster of the Week / non-serialized Became stagnant toward end of 80s Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) Also known as (Gundam 0079) During the Universal Century, Human have created colonies in space, but there is unease as spacenoids feel that the Earth Federation won’t allow equal representation, thus Spacenoid rally around the Principality of Zeon and declare their freedom from Earth Federation, starting the “One Year War”. Gundam = White Devil V-fin helmet Samurai look/motif Recurring themes Start in space, head to Earth, return to space to end Space Mobile Suits = 1 eye/ mono eye Earth/Federation Mobile Suits = glass visor for eyes Major Base to launch From, usually white in color Char Aznable – Villain, recurring theme of villain in Mask Initially not popular, canceled at 39 of 45 episodes. Rebroadcast as trilogy of movies in 1983 Gunpla = Gundam Model Kits Spin offs: Universal Century Zeta (1985) ZZ (1986) 0083(1991) Victory (1993) 08 MS Team (1996) Unicorn (2010) Thunderbolt (2015) Unique Series/Era/Centuries G Gundam (1994) Gundam Wing (1995) Gundam X (1996) Turn-a-Gundam (1999) Gundam Seed (2002) Gundam 00 (2007) Gundam Age (2011) Gundam IBO (2015) Real Robot Series Mecha are realist/conventional in nature, albeit with unique power sources/futuristic weapons Tend to be government/organization led Possible to Replace within reason/mass produced Tools of the universe Often stories about War or major conflicts Lend themselves toward long, serialized shows Super Sentai (1975) Known in the west as Power Rangers Basically Live Action Super Robo Series 80s – Rise of Real Robots Real Robot Series become mainstream as audiences begin to get tired of Formulaic Super Robot series. Many young adults were looking for more mature/serious mecha anime, allowing for Real Robot genre to take over. The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982) Many Spin Offs Armored Troopers Votoms (1983) Volton (1984) US TV show incorporating footage of Golion and Dairugger Transformers (1984) Lots of Spin Offs Bubblegum Crisis (1987) Largely Females in Exo-skeleton Suits Patlabor (1988) Mecha Cops Gunbuster (1988) From Makers of Evangelion 90 – Mecha Revolution Real Robot / Gundam make big push in 90s, but lots of mech shows still show competition. Lots of themes / traditions come out of 90s that are still seen largely today. Very experimental. Brave Series (1990s) King of Braves GaoGaiGar (1997) Tekkaman Blade (1992) In the West as Technoman Magic Knight Rayearth (1994) Magical Girl / Super Robot Series Evangelion (1995) Mix of Real/Super Series Largely a deconstruction of Mecha Series Lots of largely psychological topics Genre Defining! Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) Vision of Escaflowne (1996) Lots of Female fans Largely Fantasy The Big O (1999) 2000s – Mecha Renaissance With introduction Digital Art/Inking, Anime become less expensive to produce, allowing more varied series to become introduced. Varying art styles allow more trial and expressiveness. Great Shows, Great stories, great characters Sakura Wars (2000) VanDread (2000) RahXephon (2002) Similar to Eva in themes Diebuster (2004) Sequel to Gunbuster Aquarion (2005) Eureka Seven (2005) Skateboarding/snowboarding in the Sky Mecha Code Geass (2006) Mechs are only about 15-18 feet tall Largely move around on wheels Fun Mix of Mystical elements and Real Robot series Great cast/show One of the Greatest non-Gundam Real Robot series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007) From makers of Evangelion Very silly Creators would split to become Studio Trigger One of the Greatest modern Super Robot 2010 – Decline of Mecha Mecha Shows are more difficult to get going, with lots of shows almost never finding an audience. Landscape of Anime may have changed; seasonal anime dominates, where mecha tends to like longer /epic running series. Also, many shows about conflicts aren’t as popular because we(Sic:Japan) aren’t really seeing or being influenced by war. Mecha using more CG(Computer Graphics) to make mecha in shows, but don’t look good in an animated/2D Landscape. Star Driver (2010) Light Hearted, Fun Super Robot Aldnoah.Zero (2014) Good first season, ultimately disappointing Robot Girls Z (2014) Parody on Mazinger Z and various spinoffs Captain Earth (2014) Darling in the Franxx (2018) Interesting beginning, ultimately Disappointing Review Material Gundam Unicorn 0096 (Either on Crunchyroll or Netflix) Star Driver (Crunchyroll)
Show Notes This week, we recap, review, and analyze Mobile Suit Gundam episodes 22 and 23 (21 and 22 in the US), "The Trap of M'Quve" and "Matilda's Rescue," discuss our first impressions, and provide commentary and research on: Japanese sentō (public bathhouses), all-plastic wristwatches, bauxite mining, gallium, the bombing of Darwin, a famous POW-camp escape-attempt, plastic explosives, Lt. Matilda's voice actress, and smoke bombs.- An overview of Japanese sentō.- Additional articles about the history of sentō (these include some great artwork and photographs).- a brief history of the Japanese "system-bath" - baths in private homes that for many people replaced regular use of the local sentō.- For the connotations of nudity in Japanese media, we consulted this paper:"Nudity in Japanese visual media: A cross-cultural observation." Downs, J.F. Arch Sex Behav (1990) 19: 583. https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01542467- And our source on the prevalence of indoor plumbing in the US as of 1940 is:Lutz, James D. “Lest We Forget, a Short History of Housing in the United States.” American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 2004, aceee.org/files/proceedings/2004/data/papers/SS04Panel1Paper17.pdf.- the story of the ahead-of-its-time, "all-plastic" Tissot IDEA 2001 and its competition from Japan.- general information on the history, types, and uses of plastic explosives.- A map of Bauxite mining operations around the world.- Video of the gallium-spoon trick.- Overview of the Bombing of Darwin, and additional detail specifically about the Allies' strategy in the South Pacific.- The story of Matthias Ulungura, who captured Japanese Zero-pilot Toyoshima Haijame.- A photo of Aboriginal dancers at the ceremony to unveil the cairn to commemorate Matthias Ulungura. Plaque reads: "This memorial was erected by the Northern Territory Government in recognition of Matthias Ulungura 1921-1980 Who, unarmed, on 19th Feb. 1942 on Melville Island captured the first Japanese prisoner of war (a zero pilot) to be taken on Australian soil."- More about the Cowra Breakout, a Japanese-POW escape-attempt, which Thom parallels to Cozun's attempted escape from the White Base.- The history of smoke screens and an example of their use in a specific battle in the Mediterranean during WWII.- Toda Keiko (Lt. The White Base takes a lickin' and keeps on kickin', Amuro learns that tragedies can take all sorts of forms, and Mirai takes center stage as the Gundam crew arrive at Side 6 for a variety of misadventures. Also, the race is on for which side will figure out the sordid past of the blonde siblings first as both Sayla and Char start dropping one too many hints that more is going on than they've ever let on.
After spending approximately three weeks on travelling to the Battle of Odessa in five days time, the White Base now is able to cross the Atlantic in a single episode and we're able to say goodbye to multiple doomed characters in a single 30 minute podcast. The fits and starts of Gundam are the fits and starts of war, and while love might not bloom on a battlefield, it can certainly reap the most bitter of harvests.
With Odessa behind us the White Base takes some time to rest and repair. But everyone's favorite boy is here and ready to take center stage. That's right: Kai steps up and gets an episode about him! Oh also Char's back, I guess.
We round the halfway point of Gundam today as the White Base takes a beating, Ryu won't stay in bed, Bright won't get out of bed, Amuro needs to think with his head, and we lose a beautiful boy to the horrors of war.
Amuro is still out in the wastes. Ramba Ral is getting desperate as his supplies dwindle. The desert is hard on all of us. Today? Two decisive battles for the fate of the White Base, and one sad fallen war hero. RIP !
We return to our regularly schedule Gundam as the White Base arrives at and leaves Luna II, and Char realizes he's up against a bunch of amateurs.

If you enjoy listening, and you're reading this on or before Feb. 16, consider nominating us at starwarspodcastawards.com: direct link to nomination form here!Big thanks to those who sent Jan Dodonna and info on why a card may not show up in your collection even if you trade for it. We also discuss the opposite problem, where a card does seem to be in the collection, but is not actually there, and has cost people awards cards. Frustrating to say the least...it's one thing to hem and haw about how a marathon for a few dollars devalues if not demoralizes the fun of chasing for an amount of credits that's much greater (and we spend plenty of time doing that in this episode), but it's a whole other level when you can't trust that the cards that appear to be in your collection may not be there! Also we discover the new-to-us phenomenon of people selling and buying white base, Rey in particular, for real actual money. Who knew?! Not us!
Evan and Victoria return to the orange couch to catch up on the biggest anime news out of Hollywood, New York Comic Con, and White Base. Show Notes Evan and Victoria are excited about the confirmation of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable's anime adaptation. Victoria is bummed that Akiko Higashimura's Himozairu manga about men seeking to be better househusbands was suspended due to complaints from men. Fans held a "Naruto Pride Parade" (as Victoria calls it) at New York Comic Con Ron Howard and Imagine Entertainment are turning Tiger & Bunny into a live-action movie! Both Evan and Victoria are enjoying the slow burn of The Perfect Insider. One-Punch Man is a bit like Inferno Cop, so naturally Evan is in love with it. RWBY Volume 3 just launched on Crunchyroll, and Victoria is impressed with the improved animation.
