Show Notes This week on MSB, we cover Victory Gundam episode 35 'Mother or Shahkti'. We can't even begin to guess what kind of impossible choice will be forced upon Uso! Plus - Flanders is there when you need him (somehow), Karlmann is so inured to weapons he doesn't mind becoming one, and Myra's impossibly good while Shahkti's just impossible. Then in the research, Thom thinks he knows precisely where Tomino found the name 'Zanscare'. Please listen to it! Show Notes We're joined by special guest and friend of the show Sean, aka 'Flying Grizzly,' who helps us cover episode 32 of Victory Gundam, aka 'Doggorla's Violent Advance.' Sean offers bold takes on mechanical design and the ideal TV format for Tomino, Thom is surprised to learn that nerds listen to this show, and Nina gets everything she wants: clumsy mobile suits, a familiar voice actor, and the vindication of being right about everything all the time forever. Show Notes This week we're talking about Victory Gundam's infamous episode 29 (which depicts Uso being assaulted in a bath by an adult woman) and then Nina's research takes us down a dark path to talk about the Holocaust, its influence on Victory, and the racism in Tomino's depictions of Jewish characters. There's also a new mobile suit, I guess. It's pretty cool. Please listen to it (with discretion)! We give Tomino a third try this week, as we watch 1999's Turn-A Gundam. Is the third time the charm? I don't know! Is the Angel Halo the most wild weapon in all of Gundam? I certainly think in all of Tomino Gundam, where the competition is MOSTLY guns of various size. Well, and stuff like the Adzam Leader and such. Tomino does love to electrocute and microwave pilots, sometimes at the same time. Anyway, the Shy-Tarn is a Zanscare mobile suit that's neat but has nothing that special about it.
On this weeks episode we look at an urban legend from Japan - Tomino's Hell, a cursed poem that promises misfortune (and maybe death!) to anyone who reads it aloud. Who would win in a fight? A cursed poem or Oisín??? Tune in and place your bets.Support the showTwitter: @ParanormalHLInstagram: paranormalhotlinePatreon: https://www.patreon.com/paranormalhotlineThank you for listening! In Today's Episode, Otaku Nate and Ethan Halker of Bomb Squad Productions take a look at Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino's 1977 Super Robot anime series Zambot 3! A Show that many cite as being the blueprint for what would become Gundam, but under the surface there's a lot more going with how it influenced the Super Robot genre going forward and how it was able to tell darker stories beneath its colorful surface. In our longest episode ever (because this show is so special) we tackle the first half of 1993's Mobile Suit Victory Gundam. We discuss Tomino's hatred of the show, rumors about his depression, how the tradition of biking was likely revived behind the scenes, Cronicle's Wal-Mart mask, and Maria's failed matriarchy led by a man. Plus, we rename all the characters so they have shorter, easier to pronounce names like Jack Hanna, Mr. Pibb, Zoloft, General Sugar, and Officer Phylo. P.S. I love you, Junko! Tomino'nun cehennemine iniyoruz. This week we revisit one of our most popular international true crime ep countries, Japan. Focusing on folklore and urban legends this time, we explore just a tiny amount of Japan's rich and very long history. Kelsey reads a small collection of popular folktales, with some of the variations slowly becoming more and more bizarre (be warned that a clam wife may pee clam juice in your bean soup). Then, Alanna shares a variety of urban legends popular with the more superstitious Japanese residents. From tunnels to computer pop-ups, to cursed poems and bathrooms, we've got you covered. Tune in for the lore, stay for the laughs (there are plenty this week). Thanks for listening and keep it cryptic! Show 154 I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to the influx of new listeners that have been directed to this glorious Podcast by way of Anime Jeopardy, courtesy of Kumoricon 2022. Also, as a disclaimer, this episode was recorded before the Twitter drama. We reference Twitter several times in this episode, so just keep that in mind. On with the show! Life Protip: Delete more tweets than you send. RSS Check! Looks like we messed up! RIP Feedburner. Listen to us on Spotify! Otaku no Video Two-part OVA created by Gainax in 1991 Director: Takeshi Mori Written by: Toshio Okada Story of a college student, Kubo, who becomes an otaku after a chance encounter with an old classmate and friend, Tanaka. Autobiographical but stylized depiction of the history of General Products and Studio Gainax Features segments called ‘Portrait of an Otaku', live action interviews with otaku Discussion What new stuff stood out to us? Portrait of an Otaku hit harder now that we're the age of the folks that made this movie. They do get progressively more and more stupid. Garage Kits are made to be way more popular than they ever were. Otaku no Video remains a familiar and cozy show to return to. Kubo and Tanaka were definitely huffing fumes The Otakuland opening may be a reference to Tomino's New Anime Century speech The worst part of Otaku no Video is that they become capitalists -- but maybe that is a self-aware acknowledgement of the worst tendencies at Gainax. Highly recommended, definitely watch. The reason we have this podcast. Laven is looking for land to build his own Otakuland Syberpunk: Edgerunner 10 episodes series on Netflix Produced by TRIGGER for CD Projekt Red Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi Written by: Masahiko Otsuka, Yoshiki Usa Based on story by: Bartosz Sztybor (シテボル); Rafal Jaki Discussion “One of the best shows I've seen in awhile.” - Laven Fear going in: this is just a video game tie-in, how good could it really be? But! It is really good! Kenny and Laven fight over DARLING in the FUCKS again What's it about? David Martinez has a bad time: his school hates him, his classmates hate him, and his mom is killed in a car wreck. David becomes an Edgerunner -- a member of a crime team running jobs. He quickly spirals into the dark world of corporate warfare and cybernetic enhancements. Kenny's Take: Edgerunner is exactly what it felt like to watch anime in the 90s/00s/ This is what it was like to watch Ninja Scroll or Cyber City Oedo It has violence! It has sex! It has a complex story that is based on source material that isn't 100% present in the anime! Cyberpunk is based a TTRPG created in the 80s by Mike Pondsmith The sensory experience is dialed up to 11. This could only exist as an OVA -- in fact, it is an ONA! Cyberpunk is a love letter to the 80s OVA It is so refreshing to have a true sci-fi and cyberpunk anime again! When our generation is making decisions (after boomers are good, TY Knight Sabers), let's hope its all nostalgia like this. Who is your favorite character? Laven: Lucy, the main girl -- perfectly engineered for me to like her; Kenny: Maine and Dorio All the characters are really well done and given opportunities to bond witht he audience. Who at Trigger needs to always add the Rebecca-type character? And what is driving the perception that she's a loli? Really good world building. Do we want a sequel? Only if its a completely new story. Comfort viewing -- you can watch it slow or binge it ANIBROS STAMP OF APPROVAL So will we play Cyberpunk 2077? No. But if it goes on Sale for a steep enough discount, maybe. Want to watch anime and experience a cyberpunk adventure But wait, there's more! Trigun!? Laven had time to fit into a re-watch of Trigun. Jack reviewed Trigun on Episode # Still holds up! A secret sci-fi show A slow burn -- but worth that investment as it starts to unfold Why didn't Kenny like Trigun? He doesn't remember -- because of the dub? Because of the way its fans behaved? Maybe! What about the new Trigun? No. Cowboy Bebop Watching in Japanese Maybe if I watch it this time, it'll be different? The two goofballs muse about what they want to make on 3D printers. What!? Laven went to go see the Yokohama Gundam. The Odaiba Gundam is a trash gundam now. 1:1 scale RX 78-2 Available to see until Spring 2023 which is great because the borders to Japan are opening soon! I'm certainly used to women being mistreated and misused in Gundam, but Ennil stings because it feels like there was no reason this had to happen! I'm not saying the show is great about gender or anything, but it isn't a Tomino show and you can tell! She could have had it all! Well. Not Toniya. The show is definitely too cishet-brained for THAT. But she could have had a lot, and for some reason she just doesn't get it. If you want to find us on Twitter, Dylan is @lowpolyrobot and Six is @sixdettmar. And with this third episode, it finally feels like we have a sense of what the rhythm and structure of this first cour will be like. We see another great fight, a pretty sick mobile suit design, and more parents strangling their children with their own petty ambitions. Just because Tomino isn't working on this one doesn't mean this show doesn't think adults suck.

Before that, Kev gives Granville the choice that Kev, never, had, because yes indeed folks, it is Moonwalkers birthday 2022. Will Moonwalker decide to be brave and read the Japanese curse out aloud, or will Moonwalker choose to take a shot instead? Is there even a choice at all? In this episode we cover what Mr Moonwalker would choose to say to the world of the living, if he were in the world of the deceased. We then move on to discover what would happen once this old Japanese cursed poem, originally written down on paper, was translated and released on to the internet. This one does leave us with some questions. For example, who even was Tomino? How severe is the curse? Does Kev want Moonwalker dead? All that and more on this week's file. For those interested, Granville's rules for this episode were as follows: If G didn't read the curse when given the choice, G had to do a shot If G was overconfident and did read the curse, G had to do shots for being overconfident (the choice segments would become shot segments) and the first shot was Tequila. After the tequila (if G was overconfident), G had to do 2 shots at every segment Either way, G was doing shots but his destiny was in his own hands That may be confusing so to summarise, G had to do a shot for being cautious or two shots for being too brave. This time, Coop and Dylan have reached the start of Macross Frontier's endgame with episodes 19 through 21. While they still really like the show, they've got more than a few things to say about how it handles its specifically coded characters. Some light Macross distribution news is followed up by a long Moblie Suit Gundam "Minute" before episode discussion starts at 38:40. Tomino quotes in relation to sexuality in media, Super Chili Chili Dogs, the frightening realization that everything we love is connected, and a powerful character death come up in the conversation. Music Used: What bout' my star? (Super Robot Wars Z2 OST) Diamond Crevasse (Super Robot Wars Z2 OST)
El infierno de Tomino es una de las muchas leyendas terroríficas que existen en Japón. Este poema está supuestamente maldito y quien lo lea solo atraerá desgracia a su vida.

Show Notes This week, Nina and Thom are joined by new guest Tatiana - a filmmaker, professional editor, and sometime animator to discuss technical aspects of filmmaking in Char's Counterattack, how the movie holds up today, what the movie tells us about it's intended audience (and how audiences unfamiliar with Gundam might react to it) and what Tomino and company might have done differently. Plus Thom's research reveals one way in which Char's Counterattack turned out to be unrealistically optimistic, and Nina digs into the real science and technology that might have inspired the movie's psycoframe. Welcome to Episode 89! For our third episode of Spooky Szn 2021, we decided to have on our good friend Reina Scully to school us in the spookiest of Japanese Folklore! This week, we discuss "Kokkuri San", "Hitobashira", "Teke Teke", "Tomino's Hell", and "Kuchisake Onna" in a very special episode of Japanese-themed hauntings. Kokkuri: Kokkuri, or Kokkuri-san, refers to a paranormal game of divination, similar to the American Ouija Board. The word kokkuri refers to the game, the actual physical apparatus, and kokkuri-san refers to the being that is summoned that is considered by the Japanese to be some sort of animal spirit that is a mix between a fox, dog, and raccoon. The game is played by writing characters on a piece of paper (much like a Ouija Board) and moving a coin around the board instead of a planchette. Hitobashira: Hitobashira refers to a cultural practice of human sacrifice used formerly in Japan, in addition to many other eastern and southeastern countries found in Asia, wherein humans were buried alive near large-scale construction projects (such as castles, bridges, and dams) as an offering to the gods to keep the structure safe from harm. Teke Teke: Teke Teke is a Japanese urban legend about the ghost of a schoolgirl whose body was cut in half when she was run over by a train in a mysterious accident. Due to the unfortunate circumstances of her demise, her ghost is doomed to roam urban areas using only her hands and elbows since her lower half no longer exists. The dragging of her torso across the ground makes a “teke teke” noise similar to a skittering or scratching noise. She carries around a large scythe that she uses to chop unsuspecting passers-by in half. Tomino's Hell: Written by Japanese poet Saijo Yaso at the end of WWI, “Tomino's Hell” is a dark and unsettling poem believed to curse, or even kill, anyone who reads it out loud. Kuchisake Onna: Kuchisake-onna, meaning “Slit-Mouthed Woman”, is a popular urban legend about a malicious spirit who wears a mask to cover her mouth. She stops strangers in the night and asks “Do you think I'm beautiful?” Regardless of the answer (except in rare circumstances), she will tear off her mask, revealing her mutilated mouth, before killing the stranger. This week's show is another Weekly Suit Gundam spectacular, but before reviewing Reconguista in G, Jonathan gives some final thoughts on the outstanding Metroid Dread, and we discuss some recent Nintendo news, including the addition of Sora from Kingdom Hearts to Super Smash Bros., and the unveiling of Nintendo's laughably expensive Switch online expansion. Then it's on to Reconguista in G, the latest Gundam entry from franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, and perhaps the strangest and most formally daring of all Gundam series. Dense, complicated, wildly fast-paced, and persistently challenging, Reconguista is a divisive entry among the global Gundam fandom, but here at Weekly Suit Gundam, we are in awe of it. There is simply nothing quite like Reconguista in G, which sees Tomino turning up all his thematic and stylistic interests to 11, resulting in one of the purest auteur statements in modern mainstream media. With the best action sequences in the history of Gundam, arguably franchise-best TV animation, amazing and vibrant characters, and a structure that practically re-invents the language of anime before your eyes, Reconguista in G is an endlessly rewarding artistic gauntlet.Enjoy, and come back next week for our very special landmark 400th episode!Time Chart:Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:06:08Metroid Dread Final Thoughts: 0:06:08 – 0:12:59Nintendo News: 0:12:59 – 0:40:36Reconguista in G: 0:40:36 – 4:20:29Subscribe to our YouTube Channel!Subscribe to the WEEKLY SUIT GUNDAM Podcast!Subscribe for free to 'The Weekly Stuff' in Apple Podcasts!Follow Jonathan Lack on Twitter!Follow Sean Chapman on Twitter!
For the 35th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam, franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino returned for what is, as of now, his latest installment in the series: Reconguista in G, perhaps the strangest and unquestionably the most formally daring of all Gundam series.
