As we mark this year's World Children's Day, which is a day to commemorate the innocence, potential, and rights of every child across the globe—let us keep in mind the children of Gaza. Currently more than 5,000 children in Gaza have been killed by Israeli bombardments, with some 1,800 children missing under the rubble of collapsed buildings—most of them presumed dead. But what about the children who survive this war—what will become of them? On this episode of #ConsiderThis Melisa Idris speaks to Toby Fricker, UNICEF Spokesperson, and Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, President of Mercy Malaysia.
In this episode of the Speaking Out of Place podcast, Professor David Palumbo-Liu and Azeezah Kanji talk with Hedi Viterbo and Dr. Jess Ghannam. This episode was recorded on Saturday the 18th of November, 2023, as Israel's massive attack on Gaza passed the 40-day mark. Almost immediately after the deadly October 7 Hamas attack, the image of the child, both Israeli and Palestinian, began to dominate the media's coverage, and appeals to international humanitarian law were made to “save the children.” Azeezah Kanji and I decided to create this podcast to coincide with November 20, International Children's Day, in order to take a deeper look at why such appeals to the law must be contextualized both historically and politically.Hedi Viterbo is an associate professor of law at Queen Mary University of London in the UK. His research examines legal issues concerning childhood, state violence, and sexuality from an interdisciplinary and global perspective. His latest book is Problematizing Law, Rights, and Childhood in Israel/Palestine (Cambridge University Press, 2021).Dr. Jess Ghannam is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Global Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at UCSF. His research areas include evaluating the long-term health consequences of war on displaced communities and the psychological and psychiatric effects of armed conflict on children. Dr. Ghannam has developed community health clinics in the Middle East that focus on developing community-based treatment programs for families in crisis. He is also a consultant with the Center for Constitutional Rights, Reprieve and other international NGO's that work with torture survivors. Locally he works to promote and enhance the health and wellness of refugee, displaced, and immigrant populations from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia and has established a community-based Mental Health Treatment Programs to support these communities.https://www.qmul.ac.uk/law/people/academic-staff/items/viterbo.htmlhttps://www.cambridge.org/us/universitypress/subjects/law/human-rights/problematizing-law-rights-and-childhood-israelpalestinewww.palumbo-liu.com https://speakingoutofplace.comhttps://twitter.com/palumboliu?s=20

This week we feature two films by Chinese artist collective studio, @Motzify Mohua. These two shorts, The Crown and Hunt, are made in Unreal Engine and show extraordinary qualities in very different ways: The Crown is a fairytale made originally for World Children's Day and illustrates traditional cultural references with gorgeous imagery; Hunt is a cyberpunk anti-hero teaser. Our main 'complaint' is that we need more detail from the artists! 3:23 Unreal Engine is one of the best tools for making machinima. 8:14 The crown and the sword. 12:03 The mystique of the film - a hybridised 2D/3D animation style16:36 What struck Tracy about the first film. 19:55 Cthulhu, the ultimate evil. 27:53 What is style and why is it important? 31:58 Hidden politics. World children's day✨ November 20, 2022. I am happy to celebrate the progress we have done so far to get every child access to education, good health, good nutrition, and protection and to feel seen, heard, and loved. Today I want to remind you of your role in the fight for children's rights. You can advocate, volunteer, and donate. Donate to local organizations and associations that are working with children. Volunteer, give your time, and share your knowledge. Advocate, and raise awareness on issues that are affecting the well-being of children. Use your voice for goodness ✨ And don't forget that your government is part of the problem as they are part of the solution. Take them accountable. And as Nelson Mandela said: “There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.” — As always I hope you find a word.✨ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bbqu/support

In observance of World Children's Day on November 20, 2022, the Division of Human Services in tandem with the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment will host a Blue-Ribbon Drive, initiated to promote awareness of child protection, togetherness and well-being. Going blue on World Children's Day is representative of UNICEF's mandate to stand for the rights of every child.
To celebrate the 100th episode of Better Angels on World Children's Day, Sarah handed over her hosting microphone to Andrew Jack, global education editor of the Financial Times, for a wide-ranging interview with her and her husband, Gordon Brown, about the state of global education. Andrew asked Sarah and Gordon, the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, about their motivations for advocating for children's education and what actions world leaders need to take to give all children around the world a quality education. “If we could become the first generation in history where every single child had an education and where instead of developing some of the potential of some of the children in some countries, we developed all the potential of all children in all countries, then that would, in my view, make the biggest difference to our prospects and possibilities as a world,” said Gordon. Sarah reflects on her career as an activist and shares her insights from working with youth activists, displaced families and global movements for change during her 20 years as founder of the global children's charity Theirworld.

Gender sensitivity is being respectful and considerate towards the feelings of other genders. As rightly said by Indra Nooyi - 'Diversity is a program. Inclusion is a state of mind' In recent years, many shows and comics like the ‘Dragon Prince', ‘She-Ra and the Princesses of Power', ‘The Good Place', ‘Superman: Son of Kal-El' and ‘Loki' among many others have come up with an impressive demonstration of diversity and inclusion with their characters. With media being a greater influencer especially among the younger audience, such shows help a great deal in increasing awareness about gender sensitivity. Schools play a pivotal role in shaping us, thus, gender sensitivity, inclusiveness, and neutrality need to start from the roots. Simple and effective measures such as using gender-neutral terms while teaching and addressing students, avoiding splitting students based on their gender while forming groups for activities, or forming lines for walking on corridors or during assemblies can go a long way in helping all students feel included and respected. Gender sensitivity workshops will also help teachers and students alike in getting a deeper understanding of the topic and learning that it's okay for everyone to be themselves and increase empathy towards students who identify themselves in a so-called ‘different' manner than what society perceives as normal. Normalizing all kinds of genders will create a healthier atmosphere and hopefully, more and more people will come to realize that we are all different and not ‘different' at the same time. In this multiple-part series, commemorating World Children's Day, this and many other areas are explored by Manasvini and her friend discussing their experiences and views on this topic.

Unless the world tackles inequality, more than 167-million children will live in extreme poverty by the year 2030. The United Nations General Assembly declared today, the 20th of November, as World Children's Day in 1954. The day is intended to prompt governments to pay more attention to the welfare of their youngest citizens. UNICEF is commemorating the day by emphasizing that it's a day for children and by children to help save their lives, fight for their rights and to help them fulfill their potential.
