China's version of world history is different than ours - much different. In their version, the Chinese get their inspiration from their own emperors, ministers, heroes, poets, philosophers, and other historic figures. In a nutshell, Western historic figures were largely irrelevant to China and its history, at least until the 19th century, when China came into military conflict with the Europeans. To be sure, China had faced many fierce enemies, lost many wars, and conquered many times. But the Europeans were different. Unlike all its prior enemies, the Europeans did not hold China's civilization in high esteem. China views its humiliating losses from the 1830s to the 1940s as a mere aberration, a disruption, of its long and consistent history of being a superpower. There is much that we don't know about China. And frankly, as China reaches the status of a global superpower, that's more than a little disconcerting. To better understand China's history and its own perception of its history, I spoke with Michael Schuman, who is a nonresident senior fellow in the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub. He is also a contributing writer to The Atlantic, and was previously a foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine. His most recent book is Superpower Interrupted: The Chinese History of the World – which we discussed here. His two previous books are Confucius and the World He Created, and also The Miracle: The Epic Story of Asia's Quest for Wealth. As a journalist, Mr. Schuman has had 25 years of experience in Asia and, for this conversation, he joined us from Beijing. To learn more about Mr. Schuman, you can visit his homepage, the link for which is provided in the detailed caption of this episode. No media figure has had a more profound impact on the shape of contemporary conservative politics than Rush Limbaugh. For three hours a day, every weekday since 1988, Rush delighted and ignited his radio audience with a high-octane diatribe against liberal degeneracy — an often comic, always cruel, and never apologetic expression of the white male id. When he died on February 17, 2021, Rush left behind an American media landscape — and a Republican Party — reshaped in his image: a ruinous marriage of entertainment, insular world-building, and reactionary meanness that found its apotheosis in the presidency of Donald J. Trump. And no one is better situated to elucidate Rush Limbaugh's appeal, his effectiveness, and his impact on American politics than our guest, Nicole Hemmer. Hemmer is  the author of Messengers of the Right: Conservative Media and the Transformation of American Politics.  She's at work on a new book tracing the transformation of right-wing politics in the post-Reagan years — a story in which Rush plays a starring role. The Sultan of Swat. The Colossus of Clout. The King of Crash. The Great Bambino.  Babe Ruth died over 70 years ago, but his legend still lives on in big league stadiums and little league fields across America. While we know a lot about Ruth's baseball career, little was known about his early life and how it shaped him to become America's first superstar athlete and celebrity. My guest today sought to remedy that in her recently published biography: The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created. Her name is Jane Leavy, and she's a former sports journalist and the author of two other biographies of baseball greats. We begin our conversation discussing Ruth's sad and difficult childhood in a Baltimore boarding school and how he learned to play baseball from the Xaverian brothers who ran it. We then shift to how Ruth's hunger for affirmation helped him become the country's first real celebrity, and how his baseball career coincided with the burgeoning fields of public relations and technology, ushering in a new era in sports writing, endorsements, and entertainment. We end our conversation discussing Ruth's legacy in the world, and business, of professional sports.  Get the show notes at aom.is/ruth.

(This program was originally broadcast on January 29, 2019)Today, a conversation about one of the most fascinating figures, not only in baseball history, but in American history. George Herman ----Babe---- Ruth, Jr. was born and raised in Baltimore, graduated from the school of hard knocks, and evolved into the most famous man in America, whose every swing of the bat seemed to be a matter of national interest, and whose every exploit off the field was a source of endless fascination for Depression-era fans. His influence and importance to the game is unquestioned, and because the timing of his rise to prominence coincided with an expansion of media from print to broadcast, his influence in the public sphere, well outside the diamond, was unprecedented. In her fascinating and granular look at the life of Babe Ruth, Jane Leavy -- the best-selling author of The Last Boy and Sandy Koufax -- observes, “At some point in the trajectory of fame, real life becomes apocryphal. Home runs travel in perpetuity, drafting on perpetually willing suspension of disbelief. The temporal facts of biography no longer matter because everyone knows a person who can hit 60 home runs will live forever.” Babe Ruth did hit 60 home runs in the 1927 season, and we’ve been talking about him ever since. Jane Leavy asserts that our current notion of what it means to be a celebrity, what it means to be famous, were inexorably shaped by the life and media circus that was ----the Great Bambino.---- Her book is called The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created.Jane Leavy joins Tom today in Studio A.Their conversation was live-streamed on WYPR's Facebook page, and you can watch the video here.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From Jane Leavy, the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Boy and Sandy Koufax, comes the definitive biography of Babe Ruth—the man Roger Angell dubbed "the model for modern celebrity." A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The Boston Globe | Publishers Weekly | Kirkus | Newsweek | The Philadelphia Inquirer | The Progressive Winner of the 2019 SABR Seymour Medal | Finalist for the PEN/ESPN Literary Sports Writing Award | Longlisted for Spitball Magazine’s Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year | Finalist for the NBCC Award for Biography “Leavy’s newest masterpiece…. A major work of American history by an author with a flair for mesmerizing story-telling.” —Forbes He lived in the present tense—in the camera’s lens. There was no frame he couldn’t or wouldn’t fill. He swung the heaviest bat, earned the most money, and incurred the biggest fines. Like all the new-fangled gadgets then flooding the marketplace—radios, automatic clothes washers, Brownie cameras, microphones and loudspeakers—Babe Ruth "made impossible events happen." Aided by his crucial partnership with Christy Walsh—business manager, spin doctor, damage control wizard, and surrogate father, all stuffed into one tightly buttoned double-breasted suit—Ruth drafted the blueprint for modern athletic stardom. His was a life of journeys and itineraries—from uncouth to couth, spartan to spendthrift, abandoned to abandon; from Baltimore to Boston to New York, and back to Boston at the end of his career for a finale with the only team that would have him. There were road trips and hunting trips; grand tours of foreign capitals and post-season promotional tours, not to mention those 714 trips around the bases. After hitting his 60th home run in September 1927—a total that would not be exceeded until 1961, when Roger Maris did it with the aid of the extended modern season—he embarked on the mother of all barnstorming tours, a three-week victory lap across America, accompanied by Yankee teammate Lou Gehrig. Walsh called the tour a "Symphony of Swat." The Omaha World Heraldcalled it "the biggest show since Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey, and seven other associated circuses offered their entire performance under one tent." In The Big Fella, acclaimed biographer Jane Leavy recreates that 21-day circus and in so doing captures the romp and the pathos that defined Ruth’s life and times. Drawing from more than 250 interviews, a trove of previously untapped documents, and Ruth family records, Leavy breaks through the mythology that has obscured the legend and delivers the man. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Confucianism, with its emphasis on virtue and social harmony, served as the foundation of Chinese civilization for over two thousand years. The teachings of the famous Chinese sage had an impact on every aspect of Chinese life and social structure and ultimately spread and flourished throughout East Asia. Confucianism’s prominence in Chinese culture was shattered during the twentieth century as reformers and revolutionaries labeled the ancient sage an outdated relic preventing China from becoming a strong, modern State.China’s great philosopher is experiencing a revival in China today. President Xi Jinping routinely promotes some of Confucius’s ideas in an attempt to resurrect traditional culture as a bulwark against unwanted foreign influence. Ordinary Chinese are revisiting Confucius’s teachings and enrolling their children into Confucian schools. In his new book, Confucius and the World He Created, Michael Schuman notes that the unprecedented resurgence of Confucianism may be one of the most significant trends in Chinese politics and culture. Will Confucius’s doctrine become a tool to solidify authoritarianism in China, as it was during the country’s imperial era? How do the 21st century versions of Confucianism compare to earlier understanding of his ideas? Is Confucian humanist thought just what a rapidly changing Chinese society needs? Michael Schuman addressed these questions and discussed his book with the National Committee on February 2, 2016, in New York City.Michael Schuman is a Beijing-based journalist with over 20 years of experience writing about Asia and the global economy. He has served as a correspondent for theWall Street Journal and TIME magazine. He is also the author of The Miracle: The Epic Story of Asia’s Quest for Wealth (2009).The National Committee on U.S.-China Relations is the leading nonprofit nonpartisan organization that encourages understanding of China and the United States among citizens of both countries.

As China rises to superpower status, the country is challenging the United States not just economically and politically-- but also ideologically. Its leadership is asserting its own political and economic model as an alternative to American-style democracy and capitalism-- one Beijing believes is based on its own non-Western traditions. The ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius is, according to Michael Schuman's new book, Confucius and the World He Created, critical to China's political agenda today. The Chinese Communist Party is reviving Confucius as an attempt to legitimize its authoritarian rule by linking it to the country's political history. Confucius, they believe, can also act as a bulwark against dangerous democratic ideals from the West. Whether or not this Confucian campaign succeeds will have huge implications for China's political future, its role in the world, and Beijing-Washington relations.Join New America NYC for a conversation with journalist and author Michael Shuman, along with Hua Hsu and John Bussey, on the steps it will take for Americans to contend with China in an ever-shifting world.
