Writing a memoir can be incredibly hard, and both Kathleen and Adanna jump into this conversation together as they try on a new platform for the podcast. Yet, Julie's story is one of resilience and hope amid some very dark, troubling times. This episode focuses more on "what makes a memoir?" than a how-to. It's not just about having had struggles or a fascinating life, although Julie has had both. But more so the willingness to have the guts, chutzpah, and the ability to self-reflect. Julie gives tips throughout the conversation to help and encourage others seeking to write their memoir and for folks climbing out of hard times.Julie's memoir takes you through her life, from childhood to later in life. It's a seemingly endless string of trauma, yet in how she writes her story, there is light at the end of the tunnel with every downturn. Every journey in life, creative or other, has seasons of Winter – difficult periods where the world can seem overwhelming, when our next step is unclear, and where doors close before our eyes. How can we face such fallow periods, learn to rest, and be kinder to ourselves? In this episode, we chat with Katherine May, New York Times bestselling author of Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times' about writing memoirs, writing through fallow periods, finding our natural rhythm, and how the key to happiness might be found in incremental progress over grand ambitions. *ABOUT KATHERINE MAYKatherine May is a New York Times bestselling author, whose titles include Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times and The Electricity of Every Living Thing, her memoir of being autistic. Her fiction includes The Whitstable High Tide Swimming Club. She is also the editor of The Best, Most Awful Job, an anthology of essays about motherhood. *QUOTES FROM KATHERINE:“Suffering is actually quite functional to us as human beings, I think. And in the fullness of time, we look back on the periods we've wintered and see them as sites of transformation. And often you hear people say it was a terrible time, but I wouldn't change it now. And so that's what winter is all about” “I wasn't writing about what I thought I was going to write about. Actually... there was a different story that was trying to creep out from between the lines. And as writers, we have a choice with that kind of thing. Either we resist the story that's trying to come, or we surrender to it in a radical way and let that story out.”*RESOURCESConnect with Katherine:Twitter: @_katherine_may_Instagram: @katherinemay_Katherine May's books:Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult TimesThe Electricity of Every Living ThingThe Whitstable High Tide Swimming Club and Burning OutThe Best, Most Awful Job - EditorOther links:On Being with Krista Tippet - Krista Tippett's podcastMedway Mermaids Writing GroupWintering for Writers - Katherine's writing courseShip of Theseus - mentioned in the show*For show notes, transcripts and to attend our live podcasts visit podcast.londonwriterssalon.comFor free writing sessions, join free Writers' Hours: writershour.com*FOLLOW LONDON WRITERS' SALON:Twitter: twitter.com/WritersSalonInstagram: instagram.com/londonwriterssalonFacebook: facebook.com/LondonWritersSalon*CREDITSProduction by Victoria Spooner. Writing Memoirs (part 1): Farah Bashir & Auriel Roe talk to We'd Like A Word presenters Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan about what makes a good memoir. Farah Bashir's new book, Rumours of Spring, is about her girlhood growing up in Kashmir during an insurgency and severe security crackdown. Her family home was repeatedly searched by the army, a relative shot dead, a schoolfriend attacked with acid and her family life, education and local traditions radically disrupted. Farah writes about how the conflict and living in fear had particular impacts on women and girls - altering their posture, menstruation, visibility and core sense of self. But her book is not an unbroken litany of misery - far from it. It's a fascinating and illuminating insight into a warm family life and a rich imagination. The details and small behaviours she describes bring Srinagar vividly to life. Farah explains why she wrote Rumours of Spring; how she had to wait until she was ready; the challenges in revealing very personal aspects of her own and her family's lives; and how to make her individual story gripping for people who've never met her - her readers. Farah is from Kashmir and these days lives in Delhi. Rumours of Spring is published by Harper Collins India. And we also hear from Auriel Roe, who joins us from Spain, where she runs The Memoirist website and international memoir publisher Dogberry Books. She loves publishing other people's memoirs and is deluged with submissions. However, too many of them are boring or unremittingly miserable. In this week’s book’s podcast Sam's guest is Jonathan Ames, a writer who has produced everything from memoir (Adventures of a Mildly Perverted Young Writer) to TV writing (Bored To Death), graphic novels (The Alcoholic), pitch-black noir (You Were Never Really Here), Wodehouse homage (Wake Up, Sir!) and now, in The Extra Man, a comic novel riffing on Henry James. We talk about why he calls so many of his characters “Jonathan Ames”, how he goes about his work, and whether — as a man who has become synonymous with “overshare” — he can ever quite retreat into the background. Presented by Sam Leith.

Writing memoirs for loved ones: Expectations vs. Reality Loved ones like our parents have a lot of stories to tell but don’t always get the opportunity to do so. In this episode, Nicola Davidson tells us how to write autobiographies and memoirs for your loved one or for yourself. Working as a journalist and editor for multiple newspapers in Australia and UK, Nicola has interviewed many people who had fascinating stories to tell. But the format of the newspaper didn’t allow such elaborate memoirs. This gave the idea to Nicola about writing autobiographies for your loved ones and she came up with the website Forever Young Autobiographies.com. You can learn how to write a bio for yourself or a loved one’s memoir. I feel that I should have written down the stories of my father before dementia and Parkinson’s made it impossible. You may also want to write down and pass on the stories of your loved ones before it is too late. We don't need to be writers Nicola tells us that we don’t need to be writers or someone famous to write down our memoirs. But we should come up with a “why”- the purpose of telling or writing your story. For many people, it can be an inter-family thing with parents passing down their stories to their children. Having a “why” gives you a head start and gives you the desire to write down your story. You shouldn’t also worry about where to begin! Just get the energy going and start writing whatever you remember first. That way you can write down several memories or short stories and arrange them according to a timeline later. Writing is a creative process and you shouldn’t let the inner critic prevent you from writing whatever you feel. The best thing to do is to leave your inner critic for the second draft, according to Nicola. You can write or type out everything you remember and go take a break. After some time, you can come back to it and scan it with a fresh mind and eyes. You will be amazed that you had done a great job and can edit or modify your writing. Nicola also gives us helpful tips on writing memoirs for seniors. You can help them write down their stories as Nicola is helping her 98-year-old grandmother to do so. Your loved ones can relate or speak out the stories and you can record the speech and transcribe it later. Some people may find it difficult to remember their memories. Nicola advises us to start with long-term memories which are the richest. She also describes a few exercises to churn up all the memories- You can take a walk around the house and stumble on things which stir up some memories associated with them. Others find it helpful to look through their photo albums or vinyl collection to get the memories going. You can even remember things from certain smells like food from childhood. Nicola suggests you write down everything- your childhood years, high school memories, marriage stories- anything and everything that can go towards making an interesting memoir. Check out Gerald Schnitzer's book, My Floating Grandmother for a great example of memoir. For a non-traditional look at memoir, check out Frank S. O'Neal's poetry. You might have heard a phone ringing in the background. Oops! I forgot to unplug it before the show. And then there was my dog who decided she needed to come back in right during the program. Our guest Jon D’Amore was first published at 10 when a story he’d written about the Civil War was distributed throughout the county school system. During that time, he began studying the guitar. By his 20s, having honed his love and knowledge of music, Jon was traveling cross-country as a musician. While touring, Jon was also a feature writer for New Jersey’s 3rd largest newspaper, The Passaic Herald News, allowing him to enjoy the best of his favorite worlds…playing music and writing. Eventually, he found a different side of life. He said, “Goodbye and it’s been a slice!” to the music business and entered the corporate world. By the millennium another change had taken place. For more than two decades, Jon knew that within him there was the desire and ability to write, so he drove to Los Angeles and started as soon as he arrived. As an insider with no mob ambitions, Jon had been a trusted ear and learned of the life and death manipulations that made friends and relatives from his world disappear. When the smoke cleared, Jon was one of the few left standing. The others were either dead or in prison. The Boss Always Sits In The Back isn’t “just another mob story.” It reveals the demise of the mobsters who ran northern New Jersey…as told by someone who was there. He didn’t stop until the manuscript and screenplay for The Boss Always Sits In The Back were completed. Jon has written and co-written several screenplays and articles. He still resides in California where he continues to write…and listen to music and will share what it takes to write a compelling memoir and publicize it.
