Kilian Jornet is one of the greatest athletes of all-time across all sports. His athletic accomplishments are staggering across trail running, alpinism, and ski mountaineering. Una delle cose che ho pensato è che forse la vittoria di Vincent Bouillard non dimostra alcuna teoria, non ci insegna proprio un bel niente. E' semplicemente la bellissima storia di un atleta che mettendo in campo le sue migliori risorse e conoscenze, per quanto limitate o estese che fossero, è riuscito a dare il meglio di se stesso quando più contava. Forse dovremmo limitarci a osservare questa cosa e a dargli credito per averci fatto vivere qualcosa di straordinario, per averci aiutato a demolire alcuni dei preconcetti che avevamo su chi potesse vincere UTMB e come. Invece mi sembra che come comunità abbiamo fatto un po' fatica ad accettare che fosse proprio lui a tagliare il traguardo per primo in place du triangle de l'amitié. Nel momento in cui abbiamo realizzato che sarebbe stato Vincent, un atleta semisconosciuto, con l'UTMB index di un sub-elite, cresciuto tra Annecy, Portland e Los Angeles, è come se un una parte dell'entusiasmo e del valore che abbiamo riponevamo in quella vittoria se ne fosse andato, insieme alla lista dei DNF che nel frattempo si allungava sempre di più. Non sono immune da questa dinamica, questo è un invito rivolto anche a me stesso a sforzarmi di guardare alle cose con occhi diversi. Dal resto, è anche normale e bello appassionarsi ai personaggi e alle storie, avere i nostri preferiti, seguire questo o quell'atleta per il suo carisma, le sue capacità tecniche ma soprattutto le emozioni e i valori condivisi che suscita durante la competizione. E' il motivo per cui ogni maledetto anno torniamo a Chamonix, a Zegama, a Zinal, per cui vale la pena ascoltare le interviste e i podcast con gli atleti, leggere i loro post e i substack, seguirli nelle loro vicissitudini sul campo gara e al di fuori. Welcome to episode 65 of the Ski Instructor Podcast from a rainy Val-d'Illiez. This weeks episode features Stefano Carlin from Ski Zenit.  Ski Zenit aren't a traditional ski school in that they do a mix of normal ski school stuff in Saas Fee and Zinal in Valais, Switzerland, but they also do race coaching and camps over the summer in Saas Fee as well as ski coaching in more exotic places like China. We talked about Stefano, his long and roundabout journey to becoming a ski pro, how Ski Zenit came about, summer skiing and the future of glacier skiing, keeping healthy in the season, sparrows, dog chat in spanish and much more. My guest today is so far only the second Gestionnaire to appear on the My First Season podcast. He went to Club Med three times as a G.M. in the late 80s to Martinique, La Caravelle, and St. Lucia and that lit the spark for him to apply. He worked for Club Med from 1988 to 2000 and his first season was in Club Med Playa Blanca as a Cashier. He has a degree in Marketing from Fordham University, and he met his future wife in 1993 in Club Med Huatulco and has been married 27 years now. From New York, please help me welcome, Kevin Klein! Kevin worked in villages such as Sonora Bay, Moorea, Phuket, Zinal, and Bali, to name but a few. Despite his Marketing background, Kevin did not want to work in the office, but on the beach or doing Landsports! But alas, some do not get their first choice, so from cashier, he went to Aide Gestion, Gestion, and one season as a Personnel Manager. He worked with a wide array of Managers such as Denis Amsellem, Lefis, Arlette Gilles, and previous MFS guests, Mike Coltman, Howard McCarley, and Carlos Castro. Since I love a good “In Couple” story, Kevin shares the story of how he met his future wife, the very funny proposal story that comes with it, and caps it off by getting married in a three hundred and fifty-year-old Mexican church! During his first season in Playa Blanca in 1988, Kevin helped Bob Christians set up the trapeze rig! We end the interview with Kevin telling us who he enjoyed working with and the many, many recurring dreams he still has to this day about Club Med. Tabor Hemming is a professional athlete for Salomon USA based in Kremmling, CO. Tabor is known for wrangling cows and also her uphill speed. She was the 2022 US uphill champion and was also second overall at Broken Arrow VK and 4th overall in the 27K. Nienke Brinkman is professional runner for Nike and NN running team based in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2021, Nienke placed 2nd at Sierre Zinal in behind what would be the current women's course record holder Maude Mathys.
