We give the updates.Rhino Horn trade is unlikely, but the current revenue models are also flawed – what are the challenges in innovating a new approach where renewables, carbon markets, ESG investments and the like are combined? Why is trade so challenging, surely we can flood the market? We discuss the challenges in opening the rhino horn trade and why we should be skeptical of trade while there are so many unanswered questions. How much does it cost to implement and run an anti-poaching unit? Are we over-investing in the militarization of conservation? We discuss the different approaches and the costs experienced in creating, implementing, and operating an APU.

Sie könnten sagen: Was gehen mich Impfungen in Ruanda an? In diesem Sinne, bleib frohen Mutes.

Our understanding of poaching of endangered species in Africa can be charitably described as "simplistic." Most of us don't even see Ivory, Rhino Horn, or other products, but did you know that the United States is one of the largest markets for these products? Did you know that most poachers are locals acting out on economic necessity? The story is a complicated intersection of local and international efforts.  Host: Nicholas Mortensen  Researchers: Anna von Spakovsky and Emi Lockwood Producer: Andy Carluccio The Global Inquirer is a production of the International Relations Organization at UVA, and affiliated with TEEJ, UVA’s podcasting network.

Although appalling incidents, there are many positive signs in the fight against poaching, trafficking and consumption of wildlife products, a massive shift in attitudes among governments, transnational law enforcement, and people, in favor of reducing the demand and closing the illegal wildlife trade markets.. Rapid changes to our entire earth and our wild species and heritage is happening the world over: from climate change to regulations to law enforcement and models that unfortunately end up promoting continued illegal wildlife trade. With my guest Dr. Pieter Kat, we discuss the recent headlines of a legalized national trade in rhino horn within S. Africa and the ramifications and consequences, as yet still unknown, of the online auction of rhino horn for private use while at the same time it is still illegal via CITES for any country to import horn. We also draw parallels between the privatized large-scale farming/breeding of lions, and a ‘conservation model' that is based solely upon profit through utilization rather than species survival in the wild, and discuss the facelift that is urgently needed for conservation of the wild as a whole to ensure not just the ‘big and furry' survive, but biodiversity as a whole in the future of earth, and the necessity of protected wild places.

Can hunting survive without conservation?  Can conservation survive without hunting?  History tells us that they need each other to survive.  Hunting without rules will surely devastate a species.  Conservation regulation without hunting has shown that hunting dollars matter greatly, and without the economic backing, poachers have a field day.   This is perhaps no better represented as in the case of the white rhino where the horn of the rhino brings big bucks in the far east to supply a culture's demand based on ancient medicinal beliefs.  Cole Reid, from the Stewards of Wildlife,  is all to familiar with these concepts as he is attempting to herd 2500 rhinos on his ranch in Texas. This herd will perhaps one day supply the world with what could be the only white rhino started-culture on earth. Cole is a long time deer hunter and now world conservationist. Stay tuned as we explore a global view of conservation and hunting in this episode. Oh, and we talk a lot about deer hunting too. My guest Ashwell Glasson and I take a deep look into the disturbing headlines that South Africa has legalized trade in rhino horn. Today we delve deeply into variety of perspectives- from financial value to market value; industrialized farming to conservation-and how we will choose to translate ‘value' of wildlife, and all life, beyond human desires and the dollar, into a belief system in support of critical earth functions and her inhabitants as a whole greater than sums of parts. The ruling to open trade in rhino horn has created deep grey areas, from incomplete guidelines to law enforcement to legal parameters of how trade would commence, to our human consciousness. We have just upped the ante and pressure of rhino's survival in the wild and their conservation champions, for whom ‘value' is based upon rhino's role in keeping ecosystems functioning and healthy for- for us and the numerous other species that depend upon them.

John Grobler is a Namibian investigative reporter who has devoted more than two years of his life to examining the complex webs of organized crime funneling rhino horn from Africa to east Asia. Shi Yi 石毅, a Chinese environmental reporter, worked with him and went undercover posing as a businessperson to meet and report on the young Chinese men who engage in this nefarious activity abroad. Jeremy chatted with both of them when he attended the Africa-China Journalists Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa in November 2016 (listen to his other conversations with African journalists on last week’s Sinica Podcast). Separately, Kaiser interviewed Nicole Elizabeth Barnes of Duke University, an expert on Chinese medicine. Nicole, John, and Shi Yi all discussed China’s role in the illegal rhino horn trade, debunking myths about its use as an aphrodisiac and explaining how upper class and status-conscious Chinese and Vietnamese are fueling demand for this and other rare natural products. All three recommended listeners to support WildAid, one of the foremost organizations campaigning against the poaching of elephants and black rhinos. John also recommends supporting Oxpeckers, an African environmental investigative reporting unit that supports his work in Namibia. Nicole further recommended supporting the World Wildlife Fund, the Nature Conservancy, and marking World Rhino Day, September 22nd, on your calendar to raise awareness of the work CITIES and TRAFFIC do to monitor and crack down on illegal wildlife trade.
