Matt Rutherford returns yet again to the podcast, this time from his outpost in the Philippines. It's always fun to catch up and shoot the shit with Matt, but this time I really wanted to hear about his near-sinking on a Caribbean delivery last fall. Matt talks through the entire ordeal, from riding out a gale with all the pumps running, to nearly losing the rudder out of the bottom of the boat, to ultimately his safe landfall in Bermuda. -- ON THE WIND is presented by Forbes Yachts, the yacht sales professionals. Friend of the podcast and legendary sailor Matt Rutherford returns to the show to shoot the shit aboard his schooner MARIE THARPE. Matt hosted a small gathering of friends in Annapolis back in April aboard his boat, and we got warmed up by getting out the mics and mixing it up at the salon table down below on a rainy, chilly day. Matt was sipping tequila I think, and I had a beer and the conversation flowed, as it's wont to do with Matt, across a myriad of topics. Enjoy. -- If you liked this conversation you'll LOVE The QUARTERDECK, 59 North's 'deep dives on the art of seamanship.' Today I have a quick show talking about the expedition I just joined with Matt Rutherford. I am going to hop aboard his vessel and head out into the Atlantic, just about in the same place that I was overturned back in November 2022, to do some science. I talk about the pros and cons and taking on a challenge that is a little unnerving. Thanks for listening! EP Tiff is back to join us on a trip back to the pilot. Get ready to see a lot of things you didn't realize you missed like Kurt's basement bedroom! Sheets N' Things! MATT RUTHERFORD????? It's mostly a nostalgia trip for nostalgia's sake, but that doesn't mean it's not good.
Matt Rutherford is one of the CO-Directors & Expedition Leaders of Ocean Research Project, which is a nonprofit whose mission is to observe the unknown and monitor humanity's impact on the Ocean through dedicated interdisciplinary field expeditions. Two of the main projects they focus on is research on the melting glaciers in Greenland as well as marine plastic pollution. Greenland has a vast coastline and the surrounding waters are largely uncharted and under-monitored due to the harsh conditions and remote location. Therefore, the Ocean Research Project goes out and pursues the observations necessary for scientists to define the conditions for monitoring the effects of climate change on the Arctic marine environment. Then the other project we talk about is marine debris, ORP has conducted multiple research expeditions in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. ORP completed its first marine debris research expedition in 2013. During this trip, its crew spent 70 days sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, collecting samples of plastic trash in the water and mapping out the eastern side of the North Atlantic garbage patch. They are now doing local work in the Chesapeake Bay and have helped increase the scientific community's understanding of plastic pollution's pervasive distribution across oceans from the sea ice to the seabed. In 2011, Matt Rutherford set out to become the first person to ever sail around the Americas. He had a 40-year old, 27-foot long sailboat - the St. Brendan. As this was a solo voyage, he was alone. And as this was nonstop, he could not put into port, drop anchor, connect himself to another vessel, or beach the boat. In part 1, we look at Rutherford's trouble youth, the preparations for his voyage, and take him through the most difficult part of his voyage - the Northwest Passage. Matt took his Bruce Roberts 650 on her maiden voyage to Greenland last summer. We talk about research, robots, his boat, glaciers, fjords, climate change, creating a global fleet of sailing research vessels, the shakedown cruise to Greenland, heaters, his upcoming book, and much more.
Happy late Mother's Day to all the mom's out there- I geek out on sailing exploits- shout out to Matt Rutherford, James from Sailing Triteia and Dave Bowman from YouTube- all legends. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Matt Rutherford made a name for himself when he completed a solo, 309-day, non-stop, record-breaking trip around the Americas in a 27-foot Albin Vega. Today he's focused on putting the finishing touches on a 72-foot, Brucer Roberts designed steel schooner that will be the flagship of his non-profit: Ocean Research Project. Matt and I talked about the 60-day research expedition he and Nikki Trenholm undertook from San Francisco to Japan in a 30-foot daysailer they built in about a month.
Our conversation continues with varied discussions about sailing and exploring and conducting research in the arctic, biking solo through SE Asia, Greenlandic culture, becoming one with the ocean, whales, parachute sea anchoring, narwhals, the northwest passage, glacier melt, uncharted fjords, and more.
Matt is the only person ever to have circumnavigated the Americas nonstop and singlehanded. He now runs a sailing research vessel in the arctic. We talk about sailing as an escape from street life, falling in love with nature, arctic research and exploration, setting up a boat for long journeys, reefing, Blondie Hassler, his Bruce Roberts 650 research vessel, and much more. Explicit language warning.

#315. Matt Rutherford returns to the show to reflect on the tenth anniversary of his departure for the Around the America's solo passage, a record-setting, nonstop trip through the NW Passage and around Cape Horn. #268. The one and only Matt Rutherford is back on the show yet again! Matt & I sat down to chat aboard ICEBEAR in Annapolis as he was getting ready to take ISBJORN north to Newport. As is normally the case when Matt comes on the show, we didn't really know what we were going to talk about, yet we easily filled a very entertaining hour, talking about him skippering ISBJORN, his own podcast 'Single-Handed', his challenges with the Ocean Research Project and more. -- On the Wind is presented by Costa Sunglasses. And also supported by Offshore Passage Opportunities and Sun Powered Yachts.
#250: Matt Rutherford and Randall Reeves are both veterans of the podcast and extremely accomplished single-handed ocean sailors. In today's special episode, Matt guest-hosts the show to talk to Randall about his latest attempt at the 'Figure 8' voyage, his plan to sail solo and nonstop around the America's AND Antarctica. Randall was on the show with me just before his first attempt, which failed when he suffered a serious knockdown, blowing out the windows in his boat's wheelhouse. At the time of this recording with Matt, Randall was set to depart San Francisco on his second attempt the very next day; just this week, Randall rounded Cape Horn. This episode first appeared on Matt's own show "Single Handed Sailing," available on iTunes and wherever else you get your podcasts. Matt's a world-class story-teller - his podcast is great! -- On the Wind is presented by Rutgerson Marin. And also supported by Offshore Passage Opportunities.
Glee returns with Season 2 and so do we. Welcome back. We're talking S2E1, "Audition." Matt Rutherford has flown the coop and the Glee Club is in search of hot new recruits, unless you're Rachel and those new recruits have a killer voice. Also new to the mix is Shannon Beiste, McKinley High's new football coach, and brand new target for Sue and Schue's grade-school bullying. Basically there's some new stuff happening. #245. Matt Rutherford's been a longtime friend of the podcast and has been on the show more than any other guest. For this episode, Matt & I talked about Arctic sailing - I got to tease him for sailing farther north than he ever has! - we talked about the Golden Globe race, death, fear, anxiety, kids, his latest trip to the Northwest Passage, climate change, Shackleton, and more. It was a wide-ranging and meandering conversation, and Matt, like usual, always has something compelling to say, so listen up. BONUS. Matt Rutherford has been on the podcast more than anyone else in our 230+ episodes, and his stories are always epic. What follows is a presentation Matt did in Toronto in January at the boat show there about his Around the America’s voyage on the 27’ Albin Vega ‘St Brendan.’ Matt’s told this story before on the podcast, but he’s so damn good at it that I never tire of listening to it, and you can always learn something new from him. In this final edition of Matt Rutherford’s podcast, he falls down a hole on a Bahamanian island and lands right on top of a garbage bag filled with marijuana. He then rides out a tropical storm at anchor before heading out into open ocean with a ruined engine. And that’s when he’s becalmed and finds himself bobbing along, riding the Gulf Stream for two weeks, heading north. He also talks a little more about Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiava who were adrift in the Pacific Ocean for five months and whose story has inspired countless newspaper articles and television news segments. And, in case you wonder, after listening to this episode, the Canary Islands are 540 nautical miles from Morocco. #204. Randall Reeves is about to embark on an ambitious passage he's dubbed the ‘Figure 8 Voyage,’ in October. With a 39’ steel boat and only his thoughts to accompany him, he's hoping to complete a circumnavigation of both the America’s & Antarctica, alone and nonstop. Inspired by historic explorers and modern sailors like Matt Rutherford, Randall’s is a personal challenge. I spoke to him back in April, while we we’re still in St. Croix, about his sailing past, his preparation & his goals for the trip. Follow Randall & support the adventure at figure8voyage.com. -- On the Wind is presented by Weems & Plath, makers of fine nautical & weather instruments since 1928. A leak starts and a pump fails and before you know it, Matt’s boat, The Ault, is sinking. Meanwhile, he’s sorting out an Outbound 46 that’s filled with dog hairs and has a tropical rainforest growing on the bottom. So, he calls in old friend and foul-tempered curmudgeon, Simon, to investigate. Matt then returns to Warren, Ohio, the town of his birth, where he stays in a stinking, giant ashtray of a house belonging to his good friend, Brian. He also recalls three days in Portugal, stepping on the toes of a Brazilian woman in a tiny bikini. Matt Rutherford is the only person in history to circumnavigate the Americas single-handed, non-stop. He is the founder and operator of Ocean Research Project: www.oceanresearchproject.org
Matt tells the story of how he lived on brie and baguettes in Sada near A Coruña on the coast of Galicia. Meanwhile, his boat, the Ault, is on the hard so he’s sanding and painting and ripping out hoses in 100-degree heat… Ah, the life of a liveaboard. Matt Rutherford is the only person in history to circumnavigate the Americas single-handed, non-stop. He is the founder and operator of Ocean Research Project. www.oceanresearchproject.org

Matt Rutherford is back! This week, hear how he was robbed while spectacularly stoned in Amsterdam and delusional while sailing the English Channel at night. He also lifts the lid on charter scams and spills the beans about ‘plastic fantastic’ production boats, before tearing into politicians about the politicization of climate change.
#187. Matt Rutherford is a longtime friend of the podcast and founder of the Ocean Research Project. Matt became famous, of course, for his legendary Solo the America’s voyage, during which he sailed a 27’ Albin Vega around both American continents. In our latest chat, recorded in Sweden back in January, Matt recalls the summer of 2016 in Greenland, where he & his partner Nicole piloted their research schooner Ault into the uncharted waters of the far north, nearly coming to grief in a wild Arctic storm and subsequently being rescued by the Danish Navy. Matt is one of the best storytellers we’ve had on the show, so I just let him go to town again in this one, and he doesn’t disappoint. Follow Matt’s ongoing adventures at oceanresearchproject.org. -- On the Wind is sponsored by Weems & Plath. Visit weems-plath.com to see their full catalog of fine nautical & weather instruments. Mistaken for a cocaine smuggler, boarded by armed guards, interrogated by immigration, his boat searched and his intentions questioned. Perhaps even more frightening was the fact that Matt Rutherford was supposed to be in Iceland but had been diverted to England when Hurricane Bertha and Tropical Storm Cristobal forced him to change his plans. His first single-handed transatlantic passage did not go smoothly. For tales of adventure, listen to Boat Radio
How Matt Rutherford – record-breaking sailor and executive director of Ocean Research Project – learned to sail the hard way. After buying his first boat over the internet, unseen, he runs aground in the Chesapeake Bay within minutes of setting sail. Later that same day, he drags his anchor and comes within a few yards of being dashed on a rocky shoreline. On the return trip, along the Intra-Coastal Waterway, the boat is struck by lightning, knocking both Matt and his girlfriend to the deck. In many ways, this might be regarded as a cautionary tale; an example of what-not-to-do with a sailboat. But not long after the events recalled in this podcast, Matt Rutherford became the first person ever to circumnavigate the Americas, non-stop, single-handed – a journey of 27,000 miles, which took him 309 days. Matt’s story is a remarkable one. Hear more of it at www.boatradio.net
Matt Rutherford is back in Annapolis after a tough season in the Arctic Circle. It is now time to submit the data for analysis, compile reports, speak to the scientists and take stock of Ocean Research Project.
#168 is Matt Rutherford, recycled. We’re trying something new today. Or rather, something old. This week’s show is a rerun. A few episodes ago I hinted at publishing new episodes three times per month. I decided recently to fill that extra week with an old show, the idea being that some of our new listeners may not yet have ‘binged’ through the back catalog and caught up! So I’m going to recycle some of my old favorites and some of the ‘classics’, record a new intro, put them in the ‘On the Wind’ format and publish them in the ‘off’ weeks. So in effect, we’re now publishing weekly, save for a few holiday breaks here and there. It’ll be very obvious in your podcast feed when it’s a recycled episode. Our first recycled episode features the very first conversation I ever recorded with Matt Rutherford, from way back in 2011. Makes me realize how long I’ve been doing this! This is cool because it was recorded before Matt was ‘Matt Rutherford,’ the famous explorer who became the first and only person to sail solo and non-stop around the Americas, and it’s an interesting insight into his motivations, having seen now the remarkable voyages he’s completed since. It’s also appropriate timing because Matt just recently returned to Annapolis from Greenland. I’d like to know what you think of my recycled episodes concept. Good idea or bad idea? Send your comments and suggestion to andy@59-north.com.
Matt Rutherford and his crew gather scientific data for NASA and The Smithsonian. Every year, they spend several months in the Arctic Circle, braving tempestuous weather, sub-zero temperatures and the possibility of a polar bear attack. Added to this, they tackle the logistical problems associated with working in some of the most remote territory on Earth while also struggling to keep their heads above water financially. This week, Matt presents his programme from beneath a makeshift shelter in a disused Inuit encampment on the shore of a bay north of the 77th parallel

Added to this, they tackle the logistical problems associated with working in some of the most remote territory on Earth while also struggling to keep their heads above water financially. This week, they trawl for microplastic particles in the middle of Baffin Bay and narrowly avoid being crushed by an iceberg, which bears down on them while they're tied to a sea wall!

#147. is a fun one. Back in March, I had planned to do another podcast with Matt Rutherford to get an update on what he’s doing with his Ocean Research Project. As it were, Paul Exner was also in town to speak at a seminar Mia and I hosted in Annapolis. AND, ship’s pilot Mark Baummer was around, and had asked me for some advice to help him plan a passage to Bermuda on his Gemini catamaran. So, the inklings of an idea sprang to life - why not get the three of these guys together, all former podcasts guests, and have a little roundtable chat? So that’s exactly what we did. Matt invited us over to the house he’s taking care of in Eastport, and we sat around the coffee table in the living room. I got things going with Matt, and the hope was that everyone would kind of just jump in at points and start talking on their own. I was not let down. After a while, Matt, Paul & Mark just kinda started needing out on each other, and MAN was it fun to see! The longer the episode goes, the less you’ll hear my voice, as I just sat back and smiled and watched! We covered an array of topics, from Matt’s latest adventures, to Mark’s new boat, thoughts on electronics and radar, why Mark as a ship captain thinks required AIS might actually be a bad thing on the Chesapeake and much much more! This is a long and meandering episode, but I think you’ll agree it’s definitely worth your time! — A quick update on Isbjorn before we get to the show. Thanks to our good friend Pam Wall, she’s safely docked on a canal in Ft. Lauderdale until our trip north which starts May 18. The Cuba passage was a highlight of my sailing and traveling career - and I promise I’ll have an entire episode dedicated to that very soon - and it was great fun to share it with our awesome crew. We have one spot left on the Annapolis-Lunenburg passage from July 1-8, so check out the details on that at 59-north.com/offshore. We also just opened another spot for the Caribbean 600 race next February, so if you want to ‘level up’ and do some serious ocean racing, check out 59-north.com/oceanracing for details on that. Alright, with that, enjoy an awesome roundtable chat with me, Matt Rutherford, Mark Baummer & Paul Exner! -- This episode is sponsored by Broadreach, my former employer and one of the coolest sailing jobs I’ve ever had. Aside from being an amazing place to send your kids for an adventurer summer (listen up parents!), they’re on the lookout for skippers and mates to work the upcoming summer season out of St. Martin. Contract length varies from two to three months starting in early June through early to late August. Go to broadreachstaff.com to complete the initial job application! #145 is Tory Salvia, founder and executive producer of The Sailing Channel. Tory and I sat down in person in Annapolis a few weeks ago and had a fascinating conversation. We talked about Tory’s sailing career in general and how he got started, his love of good old boats, how he’s been influenced over the years, and more recently, his starting thesailingchannel.tv. Tory made his career in media production, making videos for the Navy for a long while as both producer and director on many of his projects. He has a love for film, which has shaped his career all along, but eventually he wanted to combine that with his love of sailing, and so The Sailing Channel was born. Today, thesailingchannel.tv is a mix of curation - Tory hosts many popular sailing movies from now and from the past - and original production. If you’ve seen ‘Red Dot on the Ocean,’ the Matt Rutherford story, that was one of Tory’s prouder moments as producer, as he brought it to life. We delve into how he made the business happen, some of his favorite sailing films, some technical aspects of how filmmaking has changed in the digital age, and much more. I’m recording this intro a little bit ahead of schedule - we’re currently anchored in Grand Case, on the French side of St. Martin. As I talk, Liz is sitting at the galley table making the show notes for this episode - one of the perks of doing that for us is she gets to hear the episodes before they release! As a reminder, you can find all the links and notes on these episodes on their blog page at 59northpodcast.com. Mia, meanwhile, just had the Sailrite sewing machine out to make some leather chafe guards for the anchor rode. The three of us are about to sail for Puerto Rico to meet the crew for the Havana passage. The big Cuba adventure is about to begin! But, of course, by the time this releases, we should already be back in Key West, or on our way. I hope it goes well! Thanks again to everyone who continues to email in. Keep them coming! And don’t forget to check out the calendar for 2017 if you want to come sailing on Isbjorn - that’s at 59-north.com/offshore. And finally, if you haven’t tried it yet, I encourage you to buy a bag of freshly roasted ‘Oh-Dark-Thirty’ coffee! We just got a new batch in for the boat, and it’s great!
#142. We’ve got two new sponsors for this show, but before we get to them, a quick note on Mia and I. We’re back stateside for a week, driving to Annapolis on the day this releases. If you’re in town, join us at Fawcett Boat Supplies on Thursday March 17th (St Patty’s Day!) for a free seminar we’re giving on fulfilling ocean sailing dreams. Fawcett’s has been holding these winter seminar series’ for a while now - in fact, Matt Rutherford’s is tonight, March 15 - and they’re a great way to pass the off season. Hope to see you on Thursday! This episode is sponsored by Mallard Marine Services & ATN Inc. Episode #141 is David Hayes & Isabelle Tremblay and their beautiful girls Rebecca & Demi. The ‘Morning Haze’ family, as we know they - by their boat name of course! - are veterans of the podcast, having been on the show, way back in episode #53. When we spoke then, their boat ‘Morning Haze’ was still on the other side of the Atlantic. Since then, they’ve sailed another several thousand miles together as a family, completing an Atlantic Circle and returning to their shoreside home in Quebec. We spoke in front of a live audience during the Toronto Boat Show in January, and delved a little bit into their family history, how and why they embarked on such an ambitious cruising project, what crossing an ocean (twice) in a Hunter is like, home-schooling, exploring Morocco and more. It was a lot of fun having Demi & Rebecca there this time too, to hear a bit of their perspective on what it’s like cruising as kids. The family is shore-based again, enjoying hunting and camping in the wilderness at their cabin up north. Isabelle also recently joined the World Cruising Club team and will be working part-time from her home in Quebec helping out with admin and event management on the North American side. As usual, thanks for all the great support from my awesome fans! If you want to support the podcast, go to 59-north.com and buy some small-batch-roasted Oh Dark Thirty coffee, sign up for a passage with us, or just send a friendly email. Thanks for all of it.
#138. I sat down with John & Amanda Neal of Mahina Expeditions, two of my favorite people in sailing and a huge inspiration both philosophically and practically in building my own offshore passage business with Isbjorn. This is the first of several podcasts I recorded in front of a live audience at the Toronto Boat Show in January, so you’ll hear some questions pop in from the handful of people we had in attendance. John & Amanda have varying and extremely interesting backgrounds that led them to the place they are today in sailing. John grew up on the west coast and did a bunch of single-handed sailing on his 27’ Albin Vega - the same kind of boat that Matt Rutherford completed his Around the America’s voyage on, by the way - and began giving lectures on how to go ocean sailing. He also became a pilot, a hobby he continues today. Meanwhile Amanda, half a world away in New Zealand, grew up cruising with her family and eventually wound up crewing on the first-ever all-female team in the Whitbread Race aboard Maiden. Their paths crossed many years later and since then the couple have sailed hundreds of thousands of miles together in their Hallberg-Rassy’s they call Mahina. Their voyages have taken them and over 1,000 crew members literally to the ends of the earth, from Arctic Norway to Antarctica and round the Horn over half a dozen times. They are consummate professionals and people to look up to if you’re interested in going offshore. Their website, mahina.com, is a treasure trove of information on all things offshore from boat design to checklists and everything in between, so be sure to check it out. As for our offshore passages, Mia and I only have 3 spots left for all of 2016 on Isbjorn. Just today we added another Caribbean trip for March of 2017, a week-long, downwind passage from Grenada to St Croix and the BVI following our trans-Atlantic from the Canaries. This week we’re gearing up for the Caribbean 600 Race, and we just completed the first two passages of 2016 with an awesome crew, despite some setbacks (check out the passages logs page on 59-north.com if you haven’t heard about it). You can find all of our passage info and sign up on 59-north.com/offshore. Thanks again for listening and I greatly appreciate the support of both my podcast fans and the awesome crews that have come sailing with us so far! Huge thanks to Ryan, Todd, Dan, Cicci, Greg, Andy & Mike for making the first two passages of 2016 so memorable and fun. With that, enjoy episode 138 with John & Amanda Neal! This episode is sponsored by Forbes Horton Yachts. Visit forbesyachts.com.
#134. Happy New Year! Welcome to the first episode of 59º North in 2016! Episode 134 is Jesse & Samantha Osborn. You won’t have heard of them, but they’re some of the most interesting and accomplished cruising sailors I’ve ever come across. Matt Rutherford introduced me to them last fall and they ended up sleeping aboard Isbjorn during the week of the Annapolis Boat Show, bunk-mates with the legendary Don Street, who also took up residency aboard. Jesse & Samantha sail a one-off, steel-hulled gaffer called Empiricus and recently completed the Northwest Passage, and only just, narrowing avoiding getting frozen in for a long winter. Empiricus remains hauled out in Iceland, where they’ll be continuing their adventures in the Arctic next summer. Amazingly, the couple had little prior sailing experience before their adventure in the Arctic. In the offseason, Jesse & Samantha live a sort of home-steading lifestyle in Alaska. Samantha is a veteran bush pilot, flying into and out of remote regions in Arctic Canada on float planes and ice planes, providing supplies to wilderness communities. Jesse is a former police officer and has since given that up in pursuit of his dream to live simply on the water and off. They started and run Seven Seas Sailing Logistics, a self-declared ‘sailing concierge, with the goal of helping others achieve their bluewater dreams. Samantha & Jesse are also young, and I always get extra excited speaking to sailors in the up and coming generation, and these guys are super inspiring. A favorite quote I discovered on their boat’s website, empiricusembarks.com states “IF YOU DON’T WANT SOMETHING, YOU MAY SETTLE FOR ANYTHING. BUT ANYTHING, COULD BE NOTHING AT ALL.” It pretty well sums up their dreams and ambitions. Check out the podcast page on 59-north.com/sailingpodcast for some bonus content that goes alongside this episode, including links to Jesse & Samantha’s adventures. This episode was recorded during a break I had at Cruiser’s University in Annapolis last October, and about a third of the way in, Pam Wall pops into the conversation as a surprise special guest! Pam had asked to listen in on the conversation as we recorded. I think she meant to remain off-mic, but Jesse & Samantha’s stories were so compelling that she couldn’t resist asking them some questions of her own. It was truly inspiring watching Pam, a legend of her generation of cruisers, interact with us up-and-coming younger sailors and seeing her eyes light up at Jesse & Samantha’s stories. It was a real honor having Pam sort of co-host this episode. --- Thanks to everyone who answered the call to donate after the bonus ‘Money’ episode, in particular longtime listener Pedro for his generous gift. If you'd like to help support the show and Isbjorn Sailing, visit 59-north.com/shop to buy some small-batch gourmet Oh Dark Thirty coffee, an Isbjorn Sailing t-shirt or simply donate to the podcast. Of course a nice email is always welcome, as are reviews on iTunes. Thanks to all of you for the continued support. Both Mia and I wish you all a happy and healthy 2016!
#124 is Matt Rutherford (again). Matt and Nicole recently returned from another lengthy expedition, this one to the far northern reaches of Greenland in pursuit of scientific research. Matt & Nicole made it all the way to 78º North, further even than Nasa this summer, and helped chart one of the last areas on earth that’s never been surveyed before. We talked about the expedition, the logistics of navigating 24/7 in thick ice, how they anchored and what anchoring hardware they used, the locals, wildlife, carrying rifles ashore and polar bears! Check out his blog on oceanresearchproject.org. Thanks to Sailrite for sponsoring this episode! Want to go ocean sailing? Join us on Isbjorn, our classic Swan 48. Click here!
#78. Matt Rutherford is back, and joins Andy via Skype from the R/V Ault, the Ocean Research Project's Colvin schooner in Annapolis. They discuss Matt's tumultuous history as a youngster, which was depicted in the newly released documentary 'Red Dot on the Ocean.' Matt touches on living in a cult, spending weeks in prison, living on and off the streets and how he relates to money (or lack thereof). "At the end of the day you die," says Matt. "It's not about how much money you have, but what you've done with your life." They also discuss the ORP's last expedition across the Pacific in a Harbor 29 daysailor. The conversation wraps up with Andy & Matt just chatting sailing in general, as they often do. Buy the DVD of 'Red Dot on the Ocean' here or purchase the digital download here. Want to go ocean sailing with Andy? Book a berth on Sojourner, Serenity or a soon-to-be-announced Swan 57 at 59-north.com/events.
#66. Andy sat in on the Ocean Research Project's two-year anniversary party and 'friendraiser' at Heavy Seas Brewery in Baltimore. He got to sit next to Senator Tom Harkin and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley during the ORP's presentation! Matt, Jamin and NIcole talked about the ORP's last two years and what happening next summer in Greenland. Jamin's part of the presentation was exceptionally interesting - they'll be using drones to study the glaciers in Arctic Greenland, and Matt is understandably excited to be heading back to the ice! Thanks to Zack for getting the audio.
#37. Regular guest & sailing legend Matt Rutherford is back on the podcast to discuss his recent landfall in Japan, climbing Mt. Fuji, making his own saki, what it's like to complete a 7,000-mile nonstop ocean crossing in a 30-foot daysailor, and why he's so determined to do what he says he's going to do! Matt & Nicole Trenholm were in Japan when they recorded this, their last day there before returning to the USA, and Andy Skyped them from Sweden, so another international interview. Check out Matt & Nicole's latest expedition on oceanresearchproject.org.
#Bonus. Thanks to Weems & Plath for sponsoring this episode of the podcast! Matt Rutherford joins the show once again to discuss his imminent departure for Japan and the whirlwind of a time he's had in California for the past fortnight getting the boat ready. Matt and Nicole Trenholm arrived at the WD Schock facility on April 1 to find their loaner boat, hull #1 of the new Harbor 29, still in the mold! Over the next two weeks he and the team at Schock managed to finish the boat in time for the Strictly Sail Pacific show in Oakland, and Matt and Nicole hope to shove off on the Ocean Research Project's second major expedition on April 20. Matt tells Andy the story of how it all came together in California over the past two weeks. Check out 59-north.com for more content from this episode. Enjoy!
#16. Matt and Andy sat down again on Burnside Street in Annapolis to discuss the Ocean Research Project's upcoming expedition to Japan. Matt and NIcole Trenholm, his scientific partner, will set out from California in a newly built Harbor 29 to do a plastics research voyage in the Pacific. it'll be the longest-ever research trip of that nature (6,500 nautical miles nonstop), in the smallest-ever boat used for such a purpose. Nicole call it their 'vessel of opportunity' - far from ideal, but good enough to do the work that needs to be done. Matt and Andy also discussed the Kiwi Spirit failures towards the end, so listen through for that. Check out oceanresearchproject.org to get involved with Matt's project.

#3. Matt Rutherford, the first person ever to sail solo and nonstop around the Americas, recounts the first Ocean Research Project expedition to the North Atlantic Gyre and the inspiration and hard work that got him there in the first place (don't miss Episode 2, released earlier today, when Matt describes the dramatic salvage attempt on the Swan 48 Wolfhound during this trip). Otherwise known as the 'Atlantic Garbage Patch' - the Pacific's ugly cousin - Rutherford and NOAA scientist Nicole Trenholm sailed nearly 7,000 miles to gather and bring back home samples he hopes will help solve at least a little bit of our ocean's problems. The couple spent 80 days at sea, including a short stop in Bermuda for repairs and refueling. This is the story.
#2. This is the riveting story of Matt and the R/V Ault's dramatic five-day salvage attempt on the abandoned Swan 48 Wolfhound, told by the man himself. I caught up with Matt just after his first Ocean Research Project expedition to the Atlantic Gyre. He and scientist Nicole Trenholm were collecting data on the plastics accumulating in the 'Great Atlantic Garbage Patch,' for lack of a better description. They came across the abandoned Swan 48 Wolfhound 700 miles east of Bermuda on their return voyage. The boat had been sighted several times previously, as reported by Charlie Doane on sailfeed.com. Matt knew nothing of this, and went over to investigate, fearing the worst.
What did we do for love? Why, come back for the season premiere of Glee’s sophomore year of course! Erica reveals the sordid secrets of her Big Gay Summer, Emily ponders the importance of Hot Topic, Erica confesses her hatred for unestablished single name stars, and for whatever reason, Emily just keeps talking about Hot Topic. We also discuss breast implants, vasectomies, human pyramids, human centipedes, and a whole lot of other topics that somehow have maybe something to possibly do with Glee (sort of kinda sure). Advanced apologies for a likely setback in audio quality, as the first few episodes of the season will be recorded sans high-tech microphones and via Skype. This does have one benefit, namely the fact that we can finally record while naked (maybe), our alone bodies slathered in bacon grease (Erica) or Cheez Wiz (Emily). Remember to loiter in the new home of the GleeKast forums over at Palavr.com (we know there’s supposed to be an E, but between Erica and Emily, we simply ran out) and explore the super duper other podcasts and discussion boards blazing a hole through the Internet. We encourage you to introduce yourselves (so we can stalk you) and answer our question of the week. Send your emails to gleekast@gmail.com and your sacrificial offerings to the angry ghost of the late Matt Rutherford, who now haunts the halls of McKinley High and on weekends, the top left ab of Mike Chang.
Libby Purves meets sailor Matt Rutherford; Matthew Du Aime, son of writer William Wharton; Charlie and Louise Mortimer who have published their father's letters written to them over the course of 25 years and cartoonist Bill Stott. Matt Rutherford is a sailor whose life as a troubled adolescent was turned around by the sport. In 2011 he set off on a solo navigation of the Americas in his boat 'Saint Brendan' which he completed in 309 days. During this epic journey of more than 25,000 miles he faced numerous trials and lost most of his trousers along the way. He is in London to receive the Jester award from the Ocean Cruising Club (OCC) for outstanding contribution to the art of single-handed sailing. Matthew Du Aime is the son of the late writer and painter William Wharton whose memoir, Shrapnel: Tales Not Told, is a frank summary of his experiences in World War Two. Wharton, the author of Birdy and A Midnight Clear, chose not to burden his children with these painful memories, preferring to write about them later in life. Shrapnel: Tales Not Told is published by The Friday Project. Charlie and Louise Mortimer's father Roger, a former racing correspondent, wrote letters to his children spanning 25 years. Dear Lupin featured the letters from Roger to his son and Dear Lumpy is the sequel, from Roger to Louise - affectionately known as Lumpy. Dear Lupin: Letters to a Wayward Son and Dear Lumpy: Letters to a Disobedient Daughter are published by Constable & Robinson. Cartoonist Bill Stott initially worked as a teacher in Liverpool where he built up a successful career as a cartoonist. His work was first published in the late 1970s in Punch and has since appeared in a wide range of publications from The Automobile, Classic Car Buyer and Yachting Monthly to Saga Magazine, Philosophy Now and Railway Modeller. He is appearing at the 10th Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival. Producer: Paula McGinley.
This podcast episode contains an interview with Matt Due to complications at birth, Matt was afflicted with cerebral palsy, which resulted in his permanently crippled condition. Surprisingly, a disability resulting from Cerebral Palsy (CP) has never stood between him and his life goals with his career, marriage, or in his parenting. From the moment he was born, Matt demonstrated his ability to overcome the odds. During the birthing process, he was deprived of oxygen for more than 20 minutes. This lack of oxygen resulted in damage to the cerebral cortex. While the lack of oxygen did not affect Matt’s cognitive ability, it significantly impacted his muscle control and movement.
