Ronnie Simpson is a 40-year-old professional racing sailor from the United States of America who aims to sail in the 2027 Global Solo Challenge race. Recently, Ronnie was the skipper of the Open 50 Shipyard Brewing which competed in the first-ever Global Solo Challenge in 2023-24. Sailing in a strong third place for most of the race, Ronnie unfortunately dismasted off of Argentina in February 2024 and Shipyard Brewing was lost at sea. Having completed 80% of a singlehanded racing circumnavigation and rounding all of the three great capes including Cape Horn, Ronnie's resolve to race in and complete the Global Solo Challenge is now only stronger. To that effect, Ronnie purchased Class 40 #15 ‘Koloa Maoli' in early 2025 to mount another campaign for the Global Solo Challenge. As a combat-wounded and medically retired US Marine and Iraq war veteran who has sailed more than 175,000 miles at sea, Ronnie is proud to use his sailing efforts to raise both funds and awareness for US Patriot Sailing, a 501c3 Veterans' sailing non-profit organization. Ronnie credits sailing with saving his life and believes in the inspirational and therapeutic benefit of finding purpose through sailing. We talk about his new Class 40 sailboat Koloa Maoli, preparing the boat for the GSC, sailing the boat, the mast, the keel, comparing Class 40 boats to cruising boats, safety of Class 40 boats, building the GSC campaign, other races, sailing in Maine and Canada, destinations, how to win a long ocean race, the motivation and drive to race sailboats, cruising vs racing, delivering a Hanse with Elliot Smith, sailing a Hobie 18 in Maine, sailing a Gunboat 60, dream boats, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Sustainability Maine, Remoran hydrogenerators, and more. Why don't the Panamanians hate us? We sliced their country in two to build the Panama Canal, owned and controlled the Canal Zone, disallowed Panamanians from visiting the Canal Zone, and even attacked Panama in 1989, drawing condemnation from the UN and the Organization of American States. So how is it a good thing to throw our July 4th party on a gunboat right smack in the Canal? We ask Amb. John Feeley, who did exactly that.

Claremont Senior Fellow Christopher Caldwell joins Spencer to discuss Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and America's involvement in it. Caldwell's brief outline of Ukraine's history with Russia leads them to a broader discussion of why Ukraine became the flash point for Russia's ire, and how Americans are inclined to narrativize the war. As the conflict rages on in new and ill-defined ways, what position are everyday Americans left in?

One hundred eight-five years ago, at Camp Monroe, the Seminole nearly scored a second rout of soldiers akin in decisiveness to the Dade Battle of late December 1835. Nearly. But the fierce battle on February 8, 1837, produced a more favorable outcome to the Army. The Seminoles amassed a huge armed contingent to attack the U.S. encampment on Lake Monroe. It was a close-run battle. Had the troops obeyed their commander to replace their flints with wooden chips for training purposes the next day, had the troops NOT obeyed their commander to construct a breastworks the day before, had the men shown less discipline in their firing, had an Army lieutenant not manned a six-pound gun on a nearby Navy riverboat, the day might have belonged to the Seminole. Instead, the U.S. Army repulsed the Seminole for one of its rare clear-cut victories in the Second Seminole War. The Museum of Seminole County History is commemorating the 185th anniversary of the Battle of Camp Monroe. Bennett Lloyd, museum director described the commemoration for us in a previous podcast. In this podcast, he rejoins to narrate a chronology of the battle and how the Army fought off the Seminole advance. (Above) The innovative Cochran Repeating Turret Gun kept Seminole at bay in this battle. But design flaws causing an accidental chain-firing from all chambers with one pull of the trigger led the Army to adopt the Colt revolving chamber gun over the repeating turret gun. (Below) Three books and pamphlets cover the battle and forts at Lake Monroe: Camp Monroe, Camp Mellon, Fort Mellon. Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. A military historian, he holds masters degrees in Public History, Communication, and Homeland Security, and is a graduate of the US Army War College with an advanced degree in strategic studies. Our guests discuss several topics with us relating to September 11, 2001. We cover what should have been done from the start, but was not. Just War Theory is ridiculed and a proper foreign policy is covered. We face the somber topic of the number of military suicides and physically/mentally wounded since the last twenty years. Battleships, warplanes, brinkmanship, and geopolitics on the high seas. What actually happened when Britain's HMS Defender sailed from the Ukrainian port of Odessa to the Georgian port of Batumi? How did what appears to have been a routine mission to assert navigation rights in the Black Sea escalate into a military and diplomatic incident between Russia and the West? With Russia and NATO conducting dueling naval exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas tensions are rising. On this week's Power Vertical Podcast, host Brian Whitmore speaks to military analyst Michael Kofman of the CNA Corporation about what it all means. Enjoy…

Nollaig Shona agus athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibhse go leir. I know it's going to be a strange Christmas. It's always poignant as we think of absent friends and family but this year especially we think of those who fell victim to the Pandemic. It's very important that we do the best we can to stay safe, to keep our families and our friends safe and to follow the basic health advice and rules. It's also close to the time when the British government has to make its mind up on Brexit. Brexit is the outworking of a little Englander mentality that harks back to the days of the Empire and those who propose this believe that by cutting themselves off from their ties with the European Union Britain can attain the power and prestige it once enjoyed as an Empire on which it was claimed that the sun never set. And when they were the largest Empire the world had ever seen a key tactic of British imperial strategy for much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and part of the 20th century, was gunboat diplomacy. So, when the British Empire wished to extend its economic and political influence and power, or curb the desire for independence by others, without the necessity of a full scale military intervention. British gunboats would be sent in to blockade ports and threaten governments. It was the brazen use of intimidation and the threat of greater violence to achieve its objective. Of course the British were not alone in using this tactic. All of the European colonial powers used similar tactics. However, as the largest Empire ever in the history of humanity, and with a navy providing it with unrivalled power, the use of gunboat diplomacy allowed the British to hold hundreds of millions of people across the world in thrall to its demands and exploitation. So as this year of 2020 fades gunboat diplomacy was resurrected by the British government.

Yacht crew, Pete Clapp and Nikki Payne, are in lockdown, looking after a Gunboat 66 catamaran that they run for a private owner. The owner is locked down in Australia and the Gunboat is in New Zealand. The pair of intrepid charmers are doing their best to stay sane whilst chillaxing and maintaining their beautiful floating home. Things are looking good in Australasia at the moment as the absolute luck of being the last part of the world to be stricken with the Corona virus meant that the authorities in both countries were able to watch what worked elsewhere and apply it to their own situations. Soon they may create a new South Pacific Bubble of the two countries and perhaps a couple of Pacific Island groups into a free-travel zone that would exclude citizens of Outside the Bubble--though I'm sure a few billionaires are revving their Gulfstreams in the hope of getting to their hideaways in Kiwiland before the rest of the world devolves into snarling dystopian devilry. But we'll find out soon.....
A civil war cracked off in the New World that would last four years and rip the Republic asunder. For more than 1400 days, brother fought brother, father killed son, friend cut down friend. Not for a minute did the suffering stop, whether for the soldiers or the noncombatants. Disease, privation, hunger, petty violence, rape, and pillage roamed the land from the swamps of S.C. to the P.A. forests. From the Mississippi to the Mountains of Appalachia, 10k and more battles were fought of every size, from glorified bar brawls to clashes of cataclysmic scale. By its end, over a million lives had been snuffed out and millions more ruined. The butcher's bill on both sides included lowly privates and brilliant generals, statesmen and lawmakers, farmers, women, shopkeepers, teachers, children, slaves, a president, and everyone in between. "In every battle, there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins." - Grant's statement is not just a bit of battlefield wisdom. He could just as readily have been describing North and South in the lead up to the American Civil War. Or throughout the War itself. Or any of the thousands of battles that took place during the War. Lincoln, self admittedly no military man, understood the dogged nature needed to win the drag em out drop em down type contest that this War was going to become. "Our success or failure at Donelson is vastly important and I beg you to put your soul in the effort" he wrote to his Western commander. Finding the type of man that would attack even after he thought he'd already lost proved difficult, but not impossible. It was on the rivers of the Western theater that the War would shift for good. Where the man and the mind Lincoln and the Union most needed would mature into a singular force. Let's go back to February 1862, to the winding calm of the Cumberland River. New bizarrely beetle-like and inky black but deadly ironclad beasts are chugging upstream to pound two forts into submission. One will fall quickly, and with little fight, the other will take days and see savage combat. Where a determined Brig General is preparing to show his family, his country, and himself that he's no failure, he can, in fact, succeed, maybe even excel. Where a group of cold but confident confederate soldiers is readying to defend their new country no matter the cost. Let's go back to the battle of Fort Donelson. Unconditional Surrender - Col. Heath at Fort Donelson "Sleep poorly, you bastards..." grumbled Col. John Heath as he watched the Union officers trudge back down a snow-covered corpse-strewn palisade. The emissaries had, under a flag of truce, brought a message for whoever was in command of Fort Donelson. It was most likely an agreement to negotiate a surrender of the Fort. Yesterday's fight had started so well that, for a moment, Col. Heath thought they might just make it, they might just win even. But the South seemed to get a lot of tough breaks in the last 24 hours, mused the Colonel as he folded his arms against the chilly early morning air. There was no point in delaying the inevitable. He watched for a moment longer as the soon to be victors grew smaller, threw his cigar stub aside and began to head back. The HQ was in the ugly, long, and squat Dover Hotel right on the riverbank. Col. Heath wasn't sure who was in charge of the garrison anymore, but he knew whoever it was they'd be there. The gunboats the Yanks had brought down from Fort Henry proved more bark than bite. Col. Heath had heard from the men at that fight that these new technological monsters were impervious to artillery fire. The frightened faces from Fort Henry whispered about how that place had been pounded by shot so continuous that she fell in under two hours. Col Heath surmised there was likely more to it than just a couple of gunboats, but when the very same ironclads steamed into view, he had to admit they struck a fearsome figure. Of course, Fort Donelson was no pushover, and he knew it. More a ring of earthworks and heavy artillery, Donelson used the land to perfection. A warren of trenches, crisscrossed by streams and gully's, the landward side of Donelson was designed to play murder on anyone brave (or dumb) enough to attack. And the riverside of the fort wasn't much easier on the attacker.Listen on Spotify iTunes This week’s sources - Grant by Ron Chernow and The Civil War: A Narrative. The Vasa was a massive 64 gun 200 foot long ship in the 1600s. The massively expensive project was supposed to propel Sweden into the future of their military might, but instead it found the bottom of the sea on its maiden voyage. For 333 years it rested until it was salvaged and set up in a museum. || More Human Echoes stuff: http://humanechoes.com || Become a member for BONUS PODCASTS on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HumanEchoes Watch our Gaming Content: https://www.youtube.com/HumanEchoesGaming Bad Ideas Podcast on iTunes: http://apple.co/2yrDfyx Buy some T-shirts: http://bit.ly/1NetNNP Join our Community Discord: https://discord.gg/vyMvJx7 Listen to Bad Ideas: https://youtu.be/BadIdeas Watch Dwarf Fortress: https://youtu.be/4shyDUgoc6c Streaming Weekly- Twitch: https://Twitch.tv/manicpixidrmgirl Mixer: https://Mixer.com/HumanEchoes You can also follow the Human Echoes Peeps on Twitter! @HumanEchoes @tsouthcotte @albert_berg @josephdevon @ManicPix

Given recent events in the Persian Gulf, it’s not hard to imagine that the United State government is on a collision course with the Iranian government. Who is pushing the hardest for military action? Is a war between the U.S. and Iran a near certainty? Author and correspondent Gareth Porter joins us to help sort the fact from fiction and to explain the possible reasons that we are being steered toward more military action in the Middle East.

We get weird this episode and play another round of FMK, with a little twist. It's also that time again when we lovingly give each other the most putrid, disgusting, waste of time, excuse of a video game to play for the week.
Telepath politics. Gunboat diplomacy. Newlywed apartment living. Doesn’t sound like much. SPOILER ALERT: We absofragginlutely loved this episode.

This week, Matt Rutherford looks back at the abandonment of the Gunboat 55 catamaran, Rainmaker, which was dismasted 200 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras while en route to the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. He also talks about how he and girlfriend Nicole found an abandoned Swan 48 mid-Atlantic and attempted to tow it back to land. Also this week, the continuing adventures of Matt, Bruno and Yanni in Africa. This time around, Yanni is sent to the hospital to have the parasitic worm cut out of his foot before continuing his epic bicycle ride from Berlin to Cape Town. Matt kicks Bruno ashore, checks out the German women shopping for lovers on the beaches of Gambia, risks drinking gallons of local tap water then fills the boat with noodles and crosses the Atlantic. On the way, he supplements his diet by catching Mahi Mahi and drying thin fillets rubbed in cayenne pepper all around his boat. In this episode the guys discuss late news, introduce the new Diplomacy Dilemmas segment, review the Japanese medieval variant Sengoku and do bad Russian pronunciations while examining Diplomail, the Russian Diplomacy site. Late news and game updates Flame has flagged he's putting together a variant Lab. Amby mentions how Captain Meme and A_Tin_Can don't seem to be making a Lab anymore, which is ok if Flame is doing so. Kaner points out Flame is one of the admins at http://server.Diplomail.ru - the Russian Diplomacy site (2 mins 50 secs) The guys talk about what variants they'd start working on if the Lab was up and running again. Amby says he'd do his planned Cold War 1 vs 1 game on the WWIV map, although if the Lab allowed non-standard coding he'd be keen to do his Nuclear Diplomacy variant. Kaner says he'd like to work on David E. Cohen's Southeast Asia variant or "Fuck You Stalemate Lines" - a variant using a standard Classic map, but each territory would be divided into "sea lanes" rules ie 5 territories in each territory NE, SE, SW and NW and a central overseer zone where the SC would be located if there was an SC in that territory (5 mins 30 secs) Amby reflects on the PlayDip forum and variant banks on what maps don't get enough love and need to be brought to the online environment (10 mins 20 secs) The guys then start talking about their Rinascimento game "Pasta, Pizza and Popes" and reflect on Kaner being eliminated first. Kaner asks Amby (who started in the box seat as Venice) about how he's found the game, especially in the centre of the board (12 mins) After the occasional tangent on alcohol, cars and holidays the guys start talking sport and discuss the women's Australian Football League, before discussing how you could create a sports based Diplomacy variant - skip over this bit if you don't care about the types of football in Australia (16 mins) Kaner gets back to Genova's approach in the Rinascimento game before Amby discusses how alliances keep changing in the centre of the map. Kaner cheers on Decima's efforts while Amby lifts the cover on PMs from our resident Italian player (20 mins) New segment: Diplomacy Dilemmas In this new segment the guys asked players for particular problems they're having in their games and attempt to give sage advice (26 mins) Our first Diplomacy Dilemma comes from Dr Recommended who asks "How do you deal with a player like Amby?" Kaner gives his sage advice based on his experience playing against Amby. While Amby reflects on Kaner's suggestions (26 mins 45 secs) Amby in return asks how do you deal with a player like Dr Recommended (34 mins 30 secs) The guys talk about how game ending has increasingly been solo focused rather than two or three way alliance draws (36 mins) Kaner and Amby talk about how your relationships with players tends to ebb and flow over time in games (40 mins) Ezio is up next in Diplomacy Dilemmas with a question on how can you can tell that a player is about to stab you, and how you can avoid making telltale signs if you're planning in stabbing. Mikey99 responded in the forum about his thoughts. Kaner starts with his take re: builds and how he used a similar strategy in his recent African game and relates it to Mikey's advice (44 mins 30 secs) The last bit of Mikey's advice is when a player has been chatty and then goes silent on you. Amby brings up the scientific evidence of this - a 2015 study in Science News by researcher Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil looking at the way people communicated across 249 games and 145,000 messages between players. When there was a time to stab there was a shift in politeness. Players who were excessively polite were more likely to betray. People suddenly becoming polite were more likely to be victims of betrayal (49 mins) Also increased planning language with the soon to be victim also tended to lead to pending betrayal (52 mins) Amby brings up another Diplomacy Dilemma from Donald45 who's playing an American Conflict game and trying to work out how to deal with his current situation (53 mins) And our last Dip Dilemma from Leif about a problem he keeps having in Gunboat games fighting two front wars and never accepting overtures towards peace. The guys discuss whether timing is the key to Leif's dilemma (55 mins) The guys talk about how timing, and how performing well at the start, tends to also lead to players ganging up on you (59 mins 30 secs) After yet another drink Amby discusses whether he should join a 1066 gunboat game or not, and chooses to do so (1 hour 8 mins) Sengoku - the Japanese variant Kaner explains he's in a 8 x 8 Sengoku tournament at the moment (1 hour 9 mins 30 secs) Kaner talks about the board layout, where each player represents a Samurai and battle it out across Japan. There can only be one victor (the shogun) - so no drawing is allowed (1 hour 11 mins 30 secs) Amby asks about player biases against a map based on how they're previously played (1 hour 14 mins) Sea territories play a big role in this game based on the guys'experience (1 hour 15 mins 15 secs) Kaner laments that when he plays in the centre of the board he generally doesn't do well (1 hour 16 mins 15 secs) The guys talk about the latest Kamasutra position that's become all the rage in Diplomacy (1 hour 17 mins 30 secs) Kaner gets shitty about Amby winning Sengoku in his recent game as a central player (1 hour 18 mins 30 secs) More Dip chit-chat The guys discuss how they're looking forward to new variants. Amby mentions he's in a First Crusade game at the moment and may talk more about it in the next podcast (1 hour 20 mins 15 secs) Kaner gives Amby a history lesson about the Childen's Crusades, and goes on to talk about the show Drunk History (1 hour 23 mins 30 secs) The guys give a belated shout out to Benjamin Hester for creating Sengoku, and Oli for porting it across online (1 hour 27 mins) Lastly the guys talk about the Russian diplomacy site Diplomail.ru. Amby tries his bad Russian (after many drinks please forgive him for bad prounciations and translations). Amby asks Flame to critique him (1 hour 27 mins 30 secs) Kaner goes onto show Amby how they've ported across almost all the variants at vDiplomacy to Diplomail (1 hour 30 mins 30 secs) Venue: Victory Hotel, Brisbane Drinks of choice: Kaner - Bright Ale by Little Creatures Brewery from Victoria, Australia Amby - Parson's Nose shiraz from McLaren Vale, South Australia Don't forget if you're enjoying the podcast please hop onto iTunes and give us a rating and a review so we can get the Diplomacy message out. Video 58 in the series "A History of the Navy in 100 Objects" presented by the United States Naval Academy. This is about the USS Panay Incident.
In this episode the guys discuss the cross-site Online Diplomacy Championship happening over at PlayDiplomacy and interview the tournament director Carebear. Fast news First up a quick update on the 1 vs 1 WebDiplomacy tournament and the shock news of Devonian and a number of other great players losing their games (2 mins 20 secs) It looks like the face-to-face DiplomacyCast podcast website is off the air again. Amby has emailed one of its co-hosts twice to find out what's happening but hasn't had a reply (5 mins 40 secs) Amby and Kaner explain how they're getting busy in real life and will be changing their recording schedule. Basically they'll catch up a little less often and record two episodes at once - which is what they start doing from today (7 mins 15 secs) Carebear interview Special note: Carebear asked if we could mask his voice a little, so we did our best... Amby explains he had some recording problems with his questions, so he's tried to amplify his voice to make it clearer for listeners (8 mins 30 secs) The guys set the scenes for the interview and the Online Diplomacy Championship which includes players from PlayDiplomacy, webDiplomacy, vDiplomacy, Stabbeurfou, BackStabbr and face-to-face players (10 mins) Carebear discusses how he got started in Diplomacy 30 years ago and tracked down the first Diplomacy instances online (11 mins) Amby asks why Carebear ended up ultimately at PlayDiplomacy and why he likes it (13 mins 45 secs) A brief discussion about the how the PlayDip forum is very different to other Dip forums (15 mins 15 secs) Carebear gives an overview about the Online Diplomacy Championship originally created by ghug and why the second championship is being held at PlayDiplomacy (16 mins 20 secs) Invited players from other sites are getting access to PlayDip's tournament interface during the competition without having to purchase a premium membership (18 mins) Players not from PlayDip are invited provided they have high rankings and reliability on their respective sites. To reduce the chance of players from PlayDip from NMRing/CDing, only the top 150 players from there are being considered (22 mins) Kaner clarifies what the PlayDip vernacular "surrendering" means (24 mins 30 secs) Kaner asks about how the various Dip sites factor in reliability (25 mins) Cut off deadline for Round 1 at the ODC is 15 February 2017. There'll be additional deadlines for the second and third rounds, with some solid reliable players able to join later, although it'll be harder to reach the top board (26 mins) Amby asks about the tournament system being used to manage the championship. Carebear explains how preliminary round scores are aggregated so the top seven scoring players make the top board for the fourth round. There may be two other boards running for players who don't quite make the top board (27 mins) Kaner double checks its being played on the standard Classic board. Carebear confirms, although its called Pure Diplomacy at PlayDiplomacy and will be played by standard rules (29 mins) In discussing PlayDip, Carebear mentions the interface isn't brilliant on mobile devices, but changes are currently being worked on to improve the experience. The interface at PlayDip also allows you to put in illegal orders eg army Munich move to Sevastopol, which is changed by the system adjudicator as a hold (29 mins 45 secs) In PlayDip there are many more options for how you can post messages which allows you to send a single message to multiple players in the group you choose (32 mins) Amby asks about whether invited non-PlayDip players can try the interface before the game. Carebear clears things up saying there is a free membership at PlayDip but there are limitations of a maximum of 3 games and only on the Pure Diplomacy board. For those wanting to access the features above that you'd need to pay to be a premium member (34 mins) Carebear discusses the Guest Guide for non-PlayDip players about PlayDip, and recommends jumping into an unranked game where a player has gone into civil disorder (36 mins 15 secs) Amby gives a thumbs up to the look and feel of the Pure Diplomacy map at PlayDip before asking about if there is any prize for the winner beyond the kudos. Carebear says he's planning on having certificates and is open to ideas on what else could be added in. Zoltar at webDip is giving 500 points to whoever wins the tournament (37 mins) Kaner asks Carebear about what some of the variant options in PlayDip do eg Stuff Happens and Escalation (39 mins 20 secs) As Carebear hasn't used a lot of the PlayDip variant features, Amby asks if the guys can be hooked up with another PlayDip player with a variant interest (42 mins 20 secs) Carebear says he can organise that, and gives an overview of how Forum games work including how some forum variant games were successfully ported across to the main part of the site eg Versailles (43 mins) Carebear explains why he prefers standard Pure Diplomacy and his thoughts on Gunboat games (46 mins 30 secs) Kaner asks if Carebear has any picks or players to watch out for in the ODC (48 mins) Carebear explains the ODC needs a few more vDip players (53 mins) Carebear outlines how Edi Bersen will be playing and how he's trying to get the current World Diplomacy Champion involved (54 mins) Carebear gives his views on the differences between face-to-face and online players perspectives on each other's respective channel (55 mins) Kaner reflects on the interconnectedness between the various Dip sites and face-to-players (1 hour 1 min) Post interview Amby explains how he didn't know PlayDiplomacy allowed for free games and had incorrectly assumed everything was pay based (1 hr 2 mins 45 secs) Kaner likes the ability to input illegal orders as a means of communicating in a Gunboat game (1 hr 3 mins 20 sec) The guys agree that Carebear's girlfriend that took him to his very first Diplomacy game should be considered the best girlfriend in the world (1 hr 3 mins 50 sec) They go onto disagree with each other about PlayDip's forums - with Amby loving it and Kaner hating it (1 hr 5 mins) The guys had a heap more PlayDip questions about how the platform operates, but as it wasn't Carebear's forte we've held them over for a PlayDip second part at some stage in the not too distant future (1 hr 6 mins 20 secs) Game updates First up it's Bourse time with Amby saying he's started going backwards in the bourse part of the game and continues to go poorly on the board. That said he outlines his own goal for the game (1 hr 7 mins 40 secs) Kaner grills Amby on missing the big Khazaria currency speculation (1 hr 9 mins 20 secs) Amby asks Kaner about the suggestion in the vDip forum about a World War IV Bourse game (1 hr 11 mins) The guys discuss Captainmeme's suggestion of changing the scoring system in the next Bourse game so victory conditions are determined by both how a player performs in the Bourse and the board (1 hr 13 mins) Amby outlines how he appreciates Captainmeme's outline of the concepts of Money Farms and VP Farms (1 hr 15 mins 10 secs) Amby asks what Kaner's thoughts are on CD's - with 35 players there's a much higher chance of someone failing to enter orders - and time game time limits (1 hr 18 mins 45 secs) Venue: Victory Hotel, Brisbane Drinks of choice: Kaner - Bright Ale by Little Creatures Brewery from Victoria, Australia (although Kaner calls it a "Pure Blonde") Amby - Annie's Lane cabernet merlot from the Clare Valley, South Australia Don't forget if you're enjoying the podcast please hop onto iTunes and give us a rating and a review so we can get the Diplomacy message out. If you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see covered in an upcoming podcast, or something you'd like to see regularly covered, please contact us or leave your thoughts in the comments below. To evade a Japanese destroyer, the USS Tang goes into a sudden dive in shallow waters. As the depth charges explode around them, the crew know full well their chances of survival are slim. The latest in science, culture, and history from Smithsonian Channel.
In this episode, we feature our trip to the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD. We have some more adventure sailing news and our products of the week will help you keep your boat fresh and mold free. Intro Chat We are back after an extended break from doing the podcast. We have been very busy with work, travel and a couple big life events. After we got back from the Annapolis show, we decided to fit in a week long sailing trip in the Florida Keys before year end. We had a blast and we will feature that trip on a future show. I was able to fix our broken throttle cable on our MacGregor 26M with a 50hp Honda engine. It was not too difficult, the trickiest part was getting the throttle control out and back in the pedestal as it was a very tight fit. Here is the cable I bought that has a 4" minimum bend radius to help avoid the wear that happened to the old cable from raising the engine all the way up. I bought a 12ft cable, but it ended up being a little long and I think 11ft would have worked a little better. We also decided recently to buy a new house! We found a place with a half acre lot so that we can keep our boat at the house instead of a local storage lot. We will move in late December. Steve also decided he was not busy enough so he started to build his first boat. It will hopefully be a Storer Quick Canoe that he hopes to turn into a sailing canoe and possibly a sailing trimaran. Check out these great sailing documentaries we watched recently, both are free to watch. The first is Chasing Bubbles about a young sailor Alex Rust and his circumnavigation. If you watch it, please give some support to his charity, it is great karma to support something that gives you enjoyment for free. The second documentary is about App Applegate and his building of an 80 foot sailboat in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. The password is on the screen, FreeRoam. Both are great. We imagine that most sailors in the northern climates have put their boats in storage for the winter so we will do our best to get you through the winter with some interesting sailing and cruising interviews and podcasts. Our Trip to the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis We attended the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis October 6th-10th, 2016. It is a great show with a very large selection of boats and vendors. We nearly cancelled the trip due to Hurricane Matthew targeting Florida as we were nervous about being away from the house during the storm. It turned out that the storm stayed far enough off the Florida coast to avoid any damage in Orlando and the weather in Annapolis was great Thursday and Friday. It rained all day Saturday and was overcast and windy on Sunday, but we still had a great trip. We got the chance to meet Paul and Sheryl Shard of the Distant Shores video series. They are in the process of building a Discovery 48 that will have a lifting keel similar to their last boat a Southerly 49. Keep their awesome sailing / cruising videos in mind for Christmas gifts, they are great to watch and fuel your cruising dreams. We will eventually release a YouTube video on our visit to the Annapolis show, but for now we will share some links to the boats we thought were unique. Catalina 385 & 425 Pair of Jeanneau 54s different layouts, Jeanneau 58 new boat of 2017 dinghy dock under cockpit. Amel 55, awesome boat Gozzard 41, beautiful light blue hull, high quality woodwork, unique layout living room salon layout in vberth area. Southerly 57, made famous by distant shores, went out of business, but back in production. Lifting keel, 10ft9in down, 3ft6in up. Wauquiez 48 pilot saloon. Brandy did not like this one, strange layout and orange leather seats. Very modern look and feel, would fit in well in Miami Beach Solaris 50 – James Bond grey, sleek low deck. Allures 45 and Garcia Exploration 45 – Jimmy Cornell owns a Garcia 45, aluminum, lifting keel, super tough boat. Dragonfly trimarans – 32 and 28ft. Similar to our boat but as a multi-hull and much faster! Probably sails faster than we can motor. Outbound 46 – ultimate monohull cruising boat, very high quality. Halberg-Rassey 372 and 40 MK II great cruising boats very comfortable. Passport 470 – Brandys favorite monohull for our needs. Center cockpit. Gunfleet 58 – fancy cruising, lifting keel, draft 12ft down, 6ft up Want a smaller boat but still have lots of money to spend – Alerion 33 express, beautiful boat, about as much room as our Macgregor 25 had below. Beautiful day sailer. Ventura 23 sport boat concept – similar to our Macgregor 26 Rhodes 22 – well built trailer sailor, but like the comfort of our boat better. The Fleet Reserve Club became the official meeting spot for The Sailing Rode. Great patio upstairs with a view of the whole show. Run by retired military volunteers, usually just open to military, but open to public during the show. Got to know Pat, Charlie and the rest of the guys well through out the show. Met up with listeners each day at the show. Some just starting to sail who we could offer advice and some that have a lot of sailing experience who gave us great advice. The Chesapeake Light Craft teardrop camper was really cool. Check out all their boat kits. Andy Schell's swan 48, 59 north offshore adventures, On the Wind podcast. Great position at front of Ego alley, they barely fit boat due to the 8ft draft. Outremer 51 catamaran – The is same brand that Sailing la Vagabonde will be getting in 2017, great boat, fast and comfortable cruiser, we think Riley and Elayna will be very happy with their new boat. Bali catamarans – garage door / open floorplan Gunboat 57 – simply awesome, very modern but still comfortable Get together with other sailing podcasters and youtubers, Jeffrey Wetting – Shooting the Breeze podcast, Teddy J from Sail Loot podcast, Kamau from iandiboats YouTube, and Vince from Sailing Nervous YouTube. We coined it The first Sailing Multimedia Creators summit, or something like that. It was great to meet everyone. Check out their content and give them some support. Vendors – great selection, we bought some Kent / Onxy PFDs, with integrated harnesses. Around $100 & new Maui Jim sunglasses for Brandy and Costa sunglasses for Steve. Brandy also bought a beautiful compass rose necklace from Maggie Lee Designs. Maggie has a lot of nautical jewelry that would make great Christmas gifts. Caught up with Greg Kutson, owner of Mantus Anchors, we gushed about how much we love our Mantus anchor that we bought last December. Greg showed us his newest products a portable scuba system and a waterproof rechargeable head light. We got to meet the US Olympic sailing team medalists! We also had some great food while were were in the Annapolis / Baltimore area. In this episode we check out the Fog of War variant of Classic, talk about the role of Mods and what to bring to their attention and conclude with new development server talk that may get variants up and running again for the Dip community! Apologies up front on how the ambiance gets louder and louder as more people arrive in the pub! If this pisses you off too much a) go have a drink or two yourself or b) let us know to go somewhere quieter! How do Moderators (Mods) work? Both Kaner and Amby have been Mods in the past for vDip, they discuss their prior experience and how it varies between vDip and webDip:vDiplomacy - link is in the top right. You can only see posts you have raised with the ModsIt's the place to bring up concerns about multi-accounting with fake accounts or suspected meta-gaming. Amby discusses how he suspected this occurred in a game and how he raised this with the ModsKaner discusses contacting the Mods where there are technical problems, where a player feels another player has crossed the line with their languageThe guys also digress blocking players, and why you'd do this - if they were obnoxious, or a player seems to CD too often, doesn't communicate well. You can block players by going into their profile page and clicking the smiley face, turning it into an unhappy face (the same functionality doesn't exist in webDip, only vDip)webDiplomacy - you contact the Mods differently. Go to Help and then email the mods. With a larger number of members on webDip, the moderators there tend to respond fasterKaner talks about how webDip is starting to add new variants before Amby shoots him down. webDiplomacy focuses far more on Classic games with around 80-90% of all games played on the server being the standard classic game.Variant focus - Fog of War We then turn our attention to the Fog of War variant on vDiplomacy:In this variant you can only see the territories immediately adjacent to your supply centres and your units. The show notes include an animated GIF showing how things would look as a game evolves as TurkeyAs you can't see where all the other players are, and what they're doing (only the ones immediately around you) it presents a significant challenge. This can be complicated further with a Gunboat game (no-press). Kaner talks about the subtle ways you can still send out subtle messages about working together and highlights the importance of checking the large map rather the standard small map. The supports don't render 100% correctly on the small map, but they do on the large map.The guys also talk about how in standard press games how you can lie and manipulate players with information - right or wrong - about areas of the map others can't see.Kaner talks about two recent Fog-of-War games he's recently played in - Cold Blooded Fog and Pompey . Kaner talks about how his loss as Germany was more a result of absolutely terrible game play rather than the map's fog-of-war element. But as Russia he had greater success getting a draw despite challenges of:subtle overtures to Germany being ignored (no checking of the large map again!)"partnering" with Turkey by sacrificing his southern front... whilst Turkey ignored this and kept eating him upefforts to make this message stronger by attacking Italy... only for Turkey to keep ignoring it!eventually getting French support with a Barents fleet support of St Petersburg to create a stalemate line, forcing Turkey to draw despite only being one supply centre short of a win - and Kaner only having 4 SC's himselfIn addition to playing Fog of War in classic, we talk about how it can also be played in the variants 1066 and Rat Wars (and why the technology behind coding Fog maps tends to limit the number of variants that use it)New development server talk Finally we talk about variant development and news from CaptainMeme (vDip mod and regular on webDip) that while the vDip Lab is pretty much dead, a new test server for development is being slowly created in the background. This is some really cool news that could see new variants created again that won't crash vDip. The guys talk about how this could impact on new variants, including suggestions on webDip on air support, Classic with neutral armies, Kaner's Mongolian variant and Amby's ideas on making a massive Cold War variant. In conclusion we tempt you again about having some of the main players from the webDiplomacy 2012 championship game being in episode 3. If you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see covered in an upcoming podcast, or something you'd like to see regularly covered, please contact us or leave your thoughts in the comments below. Venue: The Gresham Hotel, Brisbane Drinks of choice:Kaner - Four Pines Stout from Four Pines Brewing, Australia (although Kaner did call it "Ten Pints" in the podcast)Amby - Massolino Barbera d'Alba from Piedmont, Italy and The Gresham Shiraz from Western AustraliaThanks to Dan Philip for his rockin' intro to the Diplomacy Games podcast.
