Jeff Wasil is the Director of the National Marine Manufactures Association (NMMA) and I caught up with him at the recent Miami Boat Show. Not only is he responsible for environment, health, and safety at the NMMA he also leads global marine regulatory development and is a key member of marine industry technical projects. With over 20 years of experience in emissions compliance, he was the perfect guest to follow ICOMIA President Darren Vaux's podcast where over two episode he shared the findings and learnings that Jeff goes deep and wide about in this episode. Jeff serves as the Chairman of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) Marine Engine Committee, and is the Chairman of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Board of Directors. He has also served as a project leader for NMMA's marine greenhouse gas emissions task force. In the last fifteen years this has let him to publish and present many technical papers on marine emissions including particulate matter, gaseous emissions, bioassay analysis, life-cycle emissions and alternative fuels even testifying before the U.S Congressional Committee on Science Space and Technology. We talk all things ethanol-extended fuels and biofuels such as biobutanol. Jeff is an avid lifetime boater and understands and appreciates the joys of recreational boating and in not surprisingly he grew up boating and fishing. What I loved about this conversation was Jeff's unique ability to break-down complex technical issues into easily understood topics and his humbleness in receiving multiple Environmental Awards including The Business Friend of the Environment Award, Green Masters Award, and The Earth Day Sustainability Award. You can find any one of his 100+ published articles and media including the Washington Examiner, Journal Sentinel, Boat US Magazine, Boating industry, Trade Only, Journal Times, as well as multiple outdoor recreation magazines. Or here on Linkedin Thanks again for listening and we are now looking for a few guests for the second half of the year so please reach out to me at www.theboatprincess.com if you would like to share your story. See you on the water soon. Nicky xx The Boat Princess

In the Summer of 2023, the New Mexico Museum of Art will open its highly anticipated exhibition space, Vladem Contemporary, in Santa Fe's Railyard District. There's a LEED-certified farmer's market building, retail and entertainment options, and ample green space to enjoy. As changes continue, so do debates about the area's rapid gentrification. The Vladem enters this chat as a modern complement to the NMMA's historic location on the Plaza, featuring established and emerging contemporary artists. Most importantly, the space will deepen conversations between the institution and community regarding New Mexico's multicultural artistic heritage. Encounter Culture host Charlotte Jusinski spoke with Katie Doyle, assistant curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art, and Cristina González, an artist whose work will adorn the Window Box gallery, an exterior-facing exhibition space at the corner of Montezuma Avenue and Guadalupe Street. The trio discuss what it means for NMMA to set up in the Railyard, what folks can expect from Vladem, and the ever-evolving nature of public art. CORRECTION: The neighborhood around Santa Fe's Railyard was called the Barrio de Guadalupe, not the Barrio Analco, as mentioned in this episode. We apologize. Dr. Thomas J. Dammrich, DBA Former CEO, National Marine Manufacturers Association and IPC-Connecting Electronic Circuits Business Strategist, National Association of Healthcare Quality Advisor, Global Marine Business Advisors Thomas Dammrich was president of NMMA for 21 years. When assuming the role, he knew he had to get the industry working together and focused on things everyone could agree to work on. One of the first things he tackled was focusing on market expansion efforts that were also measurable. Dammrich's leadership helped unify the industry to do just that with the Discover Boating campaign, now entering its sixteenth year. Dammrich also served as President of IPC, an international trade association of companies producing printed circuit boards and doing electronics manufacturing services. After retiring from NMAA in 2019, Dammrich continued his service on a number of Boards of Directors and has chaired or served on over 15 Boards of Directors including both non-profit and for-profit companies. He is currently engaged as Business Strategist for the National Association for Healthcare Quality and as a founder of Global Marine Business Advisors Thom can't help but look forward. He has said, “I constantly scan the environment in which industries operate to anticipate challenges and identify opportunities to keep the industry healthy, growing, and working together.” Dammrich is a builder, having doubled revenues and members in every organization he has led. Dammrich has a BA in Economics, an MBA in Finance, an MS in Accountancy, and a Doctorate of Business Administration, all from DePaul University in Chicago. He is a member of the NMMA Hall of Fame, ASA Sportfishing Hall of Fame, and Boating Safety Hall of Fame and has been recognized for lifetime achievement by the Water Sports Industry Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Management Committee for the Center for Sportfish Policy and serves on the Board of Directors of Niven Marketing.
This week the WOB crew speak with Chris Mitton from the NMMA to get an update on the additional wakeboarding restrictions that appear to be expanding across waterways throughout the US. Plus Captain Rusty checks in as he prepares for the Discover Boating Miami International Boat show.
Pontoons these days offer better engineering, improved fuel efficiency, increased speed and space and all-around versatility. And that all comes at a higher cost of course. Some pontoon manufacturers are trying to mitigate sticker shock by offering different levels of pontoon lines that target different price points, from entry-level to high luxury. Others, such as Anthem Marine and Avalon, are offering pontoons with features such as surfable wakes. Whatever the sales strategy is, it seems to be working. The pontoon segment led the industry out of the last recession, and the NMMA says sales of freshwater fishing boats and pontoons accounted for 50% percent of all new powerboats sold in 2020. For the month of June, 2020, pontoon sales were up 23%, by July they were up 53%, and in August they were up 44% YoY. And Stratview Research estimates that the pontoon boat market will reach $2.5 billion by 2025. In this episode of Boating Industry Insider Content Director David Gee speaks with serial boat building entrepreneur Mark Overbye about the pontoon segment, the category’s popularity, where some of the high costs come from and what the future looks like for the segment.
NMMA is the nation’s leading trade association representing boat, marine engine and accessory manufacturers. Collectively, NMMA members manufacture an estimated 80 percent of marine products used in North America. Listen in as Tony and Sam discuss all things NMMA with the Senior Vice President Ellen Bradley.

Joan Maxwell grew up in rural Fairfield, NC. She graduated from Mattamuskeet High School and the University of North Carolina, where she received a BA in history. She is married to Owen Maxwell and together they currently reside in Edenton, NC. In 1988, Joan and Owen founded Regulator Marine in an abandoned A&P Grocery Store in Edenton. Regulator is now operating in an 121,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility and is one of the most well-respected brands in the boating industry. Joan and her team transitioned Regulator Marine from a job shop/manufacturing process to a highly sophisticated lean manufacturing process. Under Joan’s leadership, Regulator received ISO 9000:2008 certification, as well as the North Carolina Department of Labor’s top safety award, the North Carolina Star. In a historically male dominated industry, Joan remains active in the boating industry’s leading organization, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), where she served as the first female Chairperson and currently remains on the Boat Divisional Manufacturer’s Board while also serving on the NMMA’s Board. Joan focuses on learning innovative ways to improve the business that God has entrusted to her care. Currently, she is a member of C12, a Christian based leaders’ roundtable that focuses on building better businesses for a greater purpose. Joan Maxwell demonstrates and demands from her leadership team at Regulator Marine a high level of integrity and positive leadership. Her service is evident in her dedication to not only Regulator Marine, but also to the local community in which Regulator is located. Joan established a Volunteer Program at Regulator Marine which pays employees their regular wages during working hours while they volunteer their time and services to various local organizations of their choosing. In 2018, Joan established the “In His Service” program at Regulator, which oversees Regulator’s charitable giving, as well as its employee emergency assistance fund. Joan’s passion is to personally live out Regulator’s core values and to lead her team to do the same. Some of Joan’s past accomplishments include: receiving the 2018 Hammond Marine Industry Leadership Award along with her friend Kris Carroll; the Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year Award and the National Association of Manufacturer’s STEP award. In the late 1990’s she worked with Erskine Bowles (former Chief of Staff for President Clinton) when both he and she were appointed to the North Carolina Rural Prosperity Taskforce by then-Governor of North Carolina, Jim Hunt. In 2004, Regulator and the Maxwells were recognized by President George H. W. Bush when they were invited to the White House along with three other businesses from across the country to discuss the needs of small businesses. In addition, she served as a past Chairman of the Edenton, North Carolina Chamber of Commerce, recognized as Chamber Person of the Year and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Edenton Chowan Partnership – focusing on economic development. “I really believe each of us is on a journey. Those things poured into me by my parents – especially my dad – led me to the place that I am today. When I was a little girl, I’d read my Bible and when I didn’t understand I’d go to my dad to explain it. He was a great man of faith, who in his 77 years of life taught me how to both live and to die. I am humbled each day to have been his daughter. My mother was a wonderful kind person that loved and shared. There were many times we’d sit down for Thanksgiving lunch with people who were not family – just someone she knew needed to feel the love of a family on that holiday...What I have come to know and understand is that I am a beloved daughter of God. I don’t have to have all the answers. What I get the privilege of doing is praying, listening and as difficult as it is for someone who wants to “fix it” and move along – to wait on God’s perfect plan."
On this episode of the podcast, Nathan sits down with Thomas Dammrich, the President of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, to chat about his background growing up in southern Illinois, coming to Chicago for school, and lessons he’s learned in his career. From starting his career in student housing, to working his current position as President of the NMMA, Thom learned how to wear many hats and discussed how vital it is to have good communication in order to build and grow collaborative teams. Thom recently received his doctorate in Business Administration from DePaul University, and has been an asset to the boating industry for 20 years by serving as an advocate and educator to keep boating a safe and enjoyable pastime activity for the public.

Claude Beaulac is the VP of Sales and Marketing for the Canadian Electric Boat Company. I spoke with Claude just before it was announced that the CEBC was awarded the ‘Future of the Industry’ award at Quebec’s annual Marina Industry Gala. The Canadian Electric Boat Company manufactures a line of 100% electric boats that do not produce any pollution or emissions. Powered by a lithium battery, CEBC boats can provide eight to twelve hours of use on a single charge. They are completely noiseless, handcrafted with high quality materials, and they even boast in their line the fastest electric boat in the world, the Bruce. Claude has boated around the world throughout his career and currently enjoys his personal boating on a beautiful lake in Canada in a private preserve. We spoke about the boat building process, upcoming shows, how he got involved with the CEBC and more. Enjoy! On boat show strategies.....We want to show the world we can build something different than what is already out there so we bring out the Volt 180 with several different possibilities of power options. We’re really proud of showing it and when we’ve showed it, everybody was impressed and looking forward to trying one. That’s the key to electric boats. People like the idea but didn’t know it existed so they are discovering the idea that it is there today, not just coming in the future. We’ll be at Newport Beach at the end of this month. We have a boat rental business there, the eboat rental. That’s a great location to test and try out all the things that we develop because seasons are better there than here in Montreal. So far we have been the novelty at all the shows. On the electric boat experience.....Everybody gets very surprised because when we get started they feel like we’re drifting. You don’t feel anything or hear anything. It’s a comforting feeling once you’re on the water and know that you have control of the boat and you’re going at the proper speed, and you don’t hear any noise but the water flapping on the boat, and the wind. On hurdles to electric boat adoption.....The first barrier is that people don’t even know that it can be done. That’s 90% of the people that come to us at a boat show. The next one is ‘what’s the autonomy?’. They’ve seen things in electric cars and think that cars need to be charged a lot and they think of the extreme. People think they’re going to be on the water all day and wonder if it is going to last. We tell them it’s going to last eight to twelve hours depending on the speed you run with it and they are flabbergasted. It’s a matter of educating people. On the CEBC product line.....The Quietude and the Fantail are the biggest sellers. In the last four years we’ve seen some Bruce being sold and now we’ve got the Bruce T Version with Torqeedo. The Volt just came out and we’ve sold three so far and are expecting quite a few more as we work with cities who have eco-recreational programs. On boating around the world.....I've traveled quite a bit and got to boat in different cities in Switzerland, Greece, Australia, and China. In my family there were no boats but we had friends with boats, and my first wife had a sailboat we went on quite a bit. Now we have a cottage and have a small boat that we go fishing with. It’s a reserve so it’s a protected area. There’s moose, there’s deer, there’s bears, there’s all sorts of things walking around. We catch a lot of Trout and Pike. On his favorite boating destination.....The Caribbean is a great place to go, when you can see the bottom and all the fish swimming around. Up by our cottage, the water is clear and when the sun is in the right direction, you can see the bottom of the lake in a lot of places. I like to boat in those areas where you can see the marine life underneath you. On his mission at CEBC.....It makes a difference in the world and that was one of my criteria. I want to work for a business that’s going to make a difference in the world. This was a perfect mix. It’s a big challenge which is always what I’ve been looking for in life. We have a plan and we’re acting our plan on a daily basis. On improving standards for eboating.....We’ve met with the people at the NMMA and ABYC to make sure that they put a category for leisure electric boats into their system and that they have rules and regulations to apply to manufacturers so that there are no accidents that happen with electric boats. We want this to be safe. We’re a bunch of people who are concerned about the environment and the safety of people. On what draws people to the water.....I think it’s the pleasure and the freedom that you feel when you are out on the water. You are completely in a different element. When you get onto the water it’s that good feeling that you’re floating and it’s effortless. There are many ways to do it and you have to pick what you feel best with and think about your real need. We hear all the horror stories of people who say 'I loved the boat when I bought it and I loved it when I sold it' because they didn’t buy the right boat for their need. A lot of people buy the lifestyle but never live it. Think about what you’re going to do with it and try it before you buy it. I have enjoyed learning about electric boating through my conversation with Claude and previous conversation with Steve Trkla of Torqeedo. It is exciting to watch the developments in this segment of the industry and the possibilities of environmentally friendly boating continuing to grow will help make our natural waterways cleaner for generations to come!
