Guest: Nikki Henderson, a world-class professional sailor. In 2018, Nikki became the youngest skipper to lead a team in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. At the age of 25, over the course of more than 40,000 miles of ocean racing, Nikki led a diverse team of mostly amateur sailors from 16 countries to an extraordinary second place finish. She's also skippered numerous transatlantic races and won the Race to Alaska. In a Nutshell: How do you define your job as a leader? Nikki Henderson says that what she does as a skipper is pull together disparate individuals, build them into high-performing amateur teams, and then compete in the most extreme sailing races in the world. I experienced Nikki's leadership first hand a few weeks ago when I sailed with her in the Caribbean 600 as part of her amateur crew. This was a grueling 600-mile race around 11 Caribbean islands. Despite long odds, we ended up finishing third and celebrated on stage with our prize: a big bottle of rum. On today's show, Nikki Henderson and I discuss making life transitions, paradoxes and polarities in leadership, and decision-making under pressure and uncertainty.
Episode Notes Jacqueline Kavanagh, of Clipper Round the World, an 11-month race around the globe that takes paying amateurs as crew, was our first guest. She was followed by Nina Nazionale of the New York Historical museum, discussing their upcoming exhibit "Dining in Transit", which "showcases the innovative ways ocean liners, trains, and airplanes catered to passengers' appetites and expectations during the first half of the 20th century".

In this episode I'm joined by Colin Tomlinson.Colin owns a learning and development company specialising in teaching Project Leadership and Management in the Civil Engineering and Construction industry. He uses techniques adapted from his 24 years career as an Officer in the Royal Engineers and his 12 years of experience within the industry to help navigate through the complexities of working on projects. He has recently completed two legs of The Clipper Race sailing almost 15,000 miles from Australia to Seattle via Vietnam and China. When he and I talked about his recent sailing adventure I found myself fascinated by why he'd decided to do it, how he went about it, what was the impact on his business and family, what was the experience really like and what did he take from it that has remained with him now he's back at home and back in his business.Colin kindly agreed to join me to create this episode and answer all my questions. In doing so he shares how instead of pausing his business to go sailing, the trip has been a catalyst to help him scale it. Perhaps less surprising were the numerous leadership lessons that emerge from the concentrated team environment of an ocean racing yacht.I'm excited to invite you to join Colin and me as he takes us behind the scenes of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the only event of its type in the world where anyone, even if they've never stepped on a boat before, can join the adventure.Contact Colin:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/colintomlinson/Clipper Round the World About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK. Property Investor, #1 best-selling author and property coach, Bronwen Vearncombe joins the show today to share how she quit her corporate job for a life where she became her boss and found financial freedom. Together they discuss the importance of networking and systems and how to value your own time. KEY TAKEAWAYS Using Zero Accounting for your bookkeeping gives you control and supply great bookkeepers who can provide you with the right data in the right format. Any issues you may encounter will be solved by several experts. Having the right people is crucial and so is having the right reporting systems in place so that you can measure your success and see whether you are achieving your goals. People and systems combined will grant you success. You cannot rely just on systems if you want time freedom as well. You may have to go through the lengthy process of testing things out yourself before you can train people up to make sure they are implementing processes the way you know best. If you have a high hourly rate, you need to look at the tasks you are doing and see whether or not they are bringing in the same as you would charge per hour. Just because you enjoy doing something, does not always mean it is a good use of your time. To ensure you are successful in your field you need to become good at finding great people. Networking, working alongside great people and trying to find experts to help in highly skilled areas will help you on your way to success. BEST MOMENTS “This book was not easy. It was probably one of the hardest things I have ever done.” “Always try to work with experts.” “You have got to go around that loop a few times before you can be confident that things are working in the way that you need it to.” ABOUT THE GUEST Property Investor, #1 best-selling author and property coach, Quit corporate job 5 years ago and invested in property. Within 2 years, had replaced income, travelled the world, lived in NZ for 6 months. Currently in Namibia wildlife conservation since October. Bronwen Vearncombe has built a successful business over the last few years and has been able to give up her full-time corporate banking job and find freedom. Having been told she’d not be able to retire until age 67 – she knew there must be a way to escape and to spend more time with her husband and two children, and maybe even be her boss! In just two years she and her husband replaced their corporate income with property rental and left their jobs. Inspiring many people each year through her success, not only does she have a great property business, but she teaches others through her online learning platform established in 2017. Just two years later they set out to follow their dreams and specific adventures: John circumnavigated the globe with the 17/18 Clipper Round the World yacht race, and Bronwen followed working in the business and volunteering along the way. Travelling the world proved that they could balance a property business and adventure. In 2019 they spent 6 months working from The Whitsunday Islands in Northern Queensland, where Bronwen wrote her book Building Your Dream Life which was published in 2020. Featured in national property media, Bronwen loves to share her knowledge and to help others get onto the investor ladder of success. Lisa Blair is an adventurer, sailor, climate change activist and World Record holder who discovered a passion for sailing at the age of 22. Just 6 years later, she completed her first circumnavigation of the world as part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht race. Since then she’s gone onto sail solo to New Zealand twice, to skipper the first all-female team in 16 years to race the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht race and set two World Records in the process of becoming the first woman to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around Australia. In the midst of that, in 2017 Lisa set out on her most ambitious project to date; to become the first woman to sail solo unassisted and non-stop around Antarctica. And to break the men’s World Record in the process! As you’ll hear in this conversation, that expedition did not go to plan. And on a stormy night 72 days into her trip and 1,000 nautical miles from shore, her boat lost its mast and Lisa had to fight for 4 hours to save her boat -- and her life. Not only did she survive the night and spend 9 days limping back to port in Cape Town, South Africa for repairs, Lisa then found the courage to head back into the Southern Ocean and finish the challenge - in doing so become the first woman to sail solo and unassisted (with one stop) around Antarctica. EP67: Bronwen Vearncombe joins me for an inspiring interview live from a nature reserve in Namibia where she is currently volunteering. Tune in as we chat with Jelte Liebrand - Founder at Savvy Navvy. Savvy navvy is an app great for planning a sailing trip - built by sailors, for sailors. Whether you want to create a passage plan, measure distance or simply check the weather and tide, you can do it all with Savvy Navvy. Jelte took part in the Clipper Round the World yacht race in 2014. He had plenty of sailing experience, but racing from San Francisco to New York was quite a bit different from anything he'd done before. Sailing thousands of miles off-shore, he learnt how difficult navigation can be. Updating charts, downloading weather forecasts, predicting boat speed, avoiding squalls with 50+ knots of wind; it all took hours and hours below deck, plotting courses on a computer whilst hanging on at a 45 degree heel. Jelte became convinced there should be an easier way. He spent two years researching and building the foundation for savvy navvy and in July 2017 he left his job at Google to get his vision of easy, safe navigation out to every sailor on the water. We discuss: Customer acquisition Funding Understanding your customers needs Hiring What's on the roadmap And much more… This podcast is hosted by bluedropstudio.com a Digital Marketing & Creative Content Agency based in London, UK

This week’s guest is British Eventer Mary King and the reason we wanted to catch up with Mary is because she recently accomplished something significant in sport that had nothing to do with horses. Mary sailed the Southern Ocean from Cape Town to Sydney on Leg 3 of the Clipper Round the World Ocean Race. Sailing has always been a passion of Mary’s but whilst she was a regular member of the British team, eventing came first and sailing had to wait. Whilst Mary still competes and has young horses she bred to bring along, her bucket list involves non equestrian sports. We hear about what it takes to do this iconic amateur ocean race and how it has inspired her to take on new challenges. One of which involves running and we’ll hear about that goal for 2021. Mary King has represented Great Britain at six Olympics from 1992 to 2012, winning team silver in 2004 and 2012, and team bronze in 2008. At the World Equestrian Games, she won team gold in 1994 and 2010, and team silver in 2006. She has also won four team golds and one team bronze medal at the European Eventing Championships. Mary’s individual honors include European bronze in 1995 and European Silver in 2007. She is a four-time British Open Champion (1990, 1991, 1996 and 2007). She won the CCI four star Badminton Horse Trials in 1992 and 2000, the CCI four star Burghley Horse Trials in 1996, and the CCI four star Rolex Kentucky with her homebred mare King's Temptress in 2011. On January 1, 2020, walking therapist Carmen Rendell will leave her childhood home in Weston-super-Mare, and head south to follow the coastal path around the entire British Isles. Her goal is to raise awareness of the huge mental health benefits of walking in nature. Local communities and individuals across the nation will have the chance to join her along the way. Throughout her journey, Carmen will be hosting regular ‘Soulwalks’ – simple, short, group walks in nature for anyone to join. Her message is simple: families, individuals, schools, businesses can come together to walk for three kilometres. For no other reason than to be in nature and talk to each other. People can also pledge to support an individual ‘Sole2Soul Walk’ with Carmen – where they, someone they nominate, or a stranger, can join her to walk and talk. As a trained integrative therapist, with experience as a private practitioner, Carmen will use this time to give individuals the opportunity for therapy, whilst walking in nature. A Loughborough University Alumni, national league hockey player, sailor on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and Camino de Santiago walker, Carmen is familiar with the benefits of exercise, sport and walking for mind, body and spirit balance. Commenting on her ambitious goal, Carmen says: “Walking therapy benefits us in many ways. Science has proven that walking in nature can improve our mental wellbeing, by quietening our nervous system, reducing inflammation, repairing our brain and lowering our blood pressure.” Reinforcing these benefits, neuroscientist Shane O’Mara says: “The experience of walking can allow you to escape yourself and this non-ego focus is healthy. We should spend more time not thinking of ourselves.” Carmen’s route will primarily follow the coastal path, and she will let people know the calendar of events on the Soulhub website – www.soulhub.co.uk. Soulwalks can be organised in towns, villages or cities along the route and people can contact Carmen to organise one on her behalf that she can join. Carmen will be interviewing people along the way for her ‘SoulCast’ podcast. From local fisherman to business owners, teachers and artists, her goal will be to understand the true state of the nation and establish how people feel in the current social, economic and political environment. Carmen will also be hosting ‘SoulTalks’ in schools and communities and is keen to hear from anyone who would like her to come and talk about mental health and walking in nature. Show notes Who is Carmen The life she leads now The different adventures she’s been on The School of Wizards Discovering her passion Setting up Soul Hub Her dream of walking around the British Isles Being drawn to the sea Her love for nature and how it evolved Getting to know herself better Struggling to know what she wanted from life Doing the Camino gradually Sailing on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Why the experience was so intense The inner journey Being curious about life and trying new things Life is fun Listening to feelings of what feels good The planning and preparation for the walk around the British Isles Being clear with her own intentions Wanting to bring people together Book - The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life's Perfection Why it’s not about the end goal but rather the journey Fears and concerns about the challenge Paying for the challenge and budgeting during the challenge Quick Fire Questions Trust your own wisdom Advice for women who want to spend more time in nature Visualising the end of the challenge Social Media Insta: @soul_hub Facebook: @soulhubstories Website: www.soulhub.co.uk
What's the difference between skippering a yacht around the world and leading a multinational organisation? Well, according to Brendan Hall, inspirational speaker, leadership author and at only 27, the winning skipper of the world's most demanding sailing event – The Clipper Round the World Race, not a huge amount. You see Brendan has taken his experiences skippering the winning yacht and applied them to the world of business. Because when you're in the middle of the ocean and your crew has a mutiny early on, there's not a whole lot you can do. You can either give up and lose the race, or take their feedback on board, abruptly change your leadership style and make damn sure everyone has the time of their lives in the process - and win. And that's just what Brendan did. “Good leadership in any industry kind of looks the same. So, the experience I had, and the lessons that I can give my clients I find very applicable and certainly relevant to their own experience leading a startup or more established business or some strata of management in a in a global organisation.” On today's podcast: How Brendan got to the start line of the clipper yacht race Overcoming imposter syndrome Creating a culture of teamwork and inspiring an ethos to win Why his team had a mutiny and how he dealt with it Why a leader needs to empower their team, not own it The importance of creating processes early on to ensure smooth operations Links: (Book) Team Spirit - Brendan Hall https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/

We first spoke with Sally back at the very start of the Tough Girl Podcast, Sally was one of the first 4 guests. During the first episode we focused on her row across the Atlantic Ocean with her mum who she hadn’t spoken to in 10 years! Since 2015, I’ve heard her give motivational talks, and met Sally on multiple occasions, she’s become a good friend. Sally is also part of the Tough Girl Tribe (closed FB group for guests and patrons of the tough girl podcast). Earlier on this year, her book “Sally's Odd at Sea” was selected for the monthly book club (run by Allison McArthur). So much came out from the discussion, such as the challenges of writing the book, feedback on the cover, working as a humanitarian aid worker, becoming a Personal Trainer and working with the athletes in the gym at the 2012 London Olympics, sailing the last leg of the Clipper Round the World, plus so much more! I decided it would be fab to get Sally back on the podcast to share more about her other adventures and challenges she’s been involved with. Some of the adventures and challenges include: Qualifying as a humanitarian aid worker with Shelterbox and being deployed to two disasters. Joining the incredible ‘1st’ women from the Armed Forces to climb the Chemin De la Liberte. Recording a documentary about the most remote islands in the world. Writing articles for the BBC Magazine and presented them on BBC Radio 4, which included going to the Galapagos to write about El Niño. Sally also tried to row round Great Britain - but was picked up by the RNLI in Margate!! #267. Meg and Morgen are the couple behind Ocean Racers, sailing a Pogo 12.50 (think cruising 'Class 40') on the Atlantic racing circuit and taking paying crew along for the adventure. They earned their chops - and met each other - as young 20-something's sailing as crew on the Clipper Round the World race, the same year that friend of the podcast Ollie Cotterell was skipper. That adventure inspired them to start their own racing team, which evolved into the Ocean Racers business. Mia & I spoke to them in person onboard their boat HERMES in Bermuda. What follows is one of the most inspiring episodes yet, so get ready to enjoy the ride! -- On the Wind is presented by Costa Sunglasses. And also supported by Offshore Passage Opportunities and Sun Powered Yachts.

For that reason she had originally only signed up for the first leg of the race, crossing the Atlantic, travelling from London to Rio de Janeiro (28 day at sea). During the crossing, she fell in love with the sport and the sea, so she carried on signing up for more legs. She continued sailing through some of the most treacherous weather systems and isolated areas of the planet, facing not only the extremes of weather, from boiling to freezing temperatures, but also life threatening situations. She sailed to Cape Town, Albany, Sydney, Hobart, till she reached her final destination, Airlie Beach, Australia - 5 months later. She has covered more than 18,000 Nautical Miles in total, becoming the first and only Cypriot to have sailed from the UK to Australia on a racing sailing boat. Today, Memnia splits her time between England and Cyprus, combining dentistry with her love of adventurous activities, including sailing, scuba diving, trekking etc. She has been invited on various stages to share her story, including TEDxNicosia and has evolved as a motivational speaker and workshop trainer, inspiring others through her unique experience to go after their dreams and to reconsider their own lives. She has just completed an all-female expedition (Led by Felicity Aston) trekking on iced river in the remote Zanskar Valley, in Jammu and Kashmir. Show notes Memnia introduces herself Growing up in Cyprus Deciding to sail around the world The unfortunate events that happened in her life which led to making this decision Having no regrets Thinking about doing the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race when she was 31 Deciding to take the first step and send in her application How she funded the race Forget about her house deposit! Listen In To Learn How advances in technology have made sailing safer The role that technology plays for all of today's sailors The extreme environments of a round the world race How tech has allowed spectators to keep up to date with the race whilst remaining on solid ground Tech That's Tough Enough To Withstand Mother Nature's Wildest Conditions In a 40,000 nautical mile race around the world in 70-foot racing yachts where nearly half the crew have little to no sailing experience, the Clipper Round The World Race is not for the faint hearted. Experiencing extreme heat, condensation, corrosive salt water and numbing cold, it's only the toughest of tech that will survive and see each team through to the finish. In this fascinating episode, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Founder and Chairman of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, paints a vivid picture of life at sea. He takes us below deck to explain the training and preparation required to sail a yacht around the world, the tech that keeps spectators up to date with race conditions and the scariest experience of his life on the water.
Episode three is one very close to my heart. Back in 2007-8, I became the first female to successfully circumnavigate as skipper of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race so it was my absolute pleasure to chat with professional sailor and skipper of the first placed team in the 2017-18 Clipper Race - Wendy Tuck. Not only did she WIN the race but in doing so became the FIRST female skipper in history to win an around the world yacht race, a decade after my own circumnavigation. This truly inspiring lady talks about her experinces of leading a team of amatuer sailors around the world, dealing with the man management aspect of the race and describes in details her greatest "oh s&%t" moment which only goes to demonstrate the tenacity, determination and spirit of this truly inspiring female. Wendy is an incredibly humble person who admits that she did not even realise initially that her first place in the Clipper Race put her in the sailing history books. For anyone who wants to learn about how to keep calm in a crisis and motivate a team to keep pushing no matter how tough it gets this episode is for you. So tune in, feel free to share and I hope you enjoy the amazing stories Wendy has to tell. As ever thank you for listening and if you have a story you would like to share please get in touch info@achievingawesome.co. If you have a moment to give the show a rating on I Tunes I would much appreciate your support. PS. We conducted this interview thousands of miles apart via Skype so occaisionally the sound quality is not perfect so bear with us on that one :)
In episode two meet Hannah Mckeand - Polar explorer, adventurer, ocean sailor, entrepreneur and just all out inspirational human. After life presented her with an opportunity to leave her day job and travel, Hannah took a deep breath and began her incredible adventures. She ventured to the Western Desert, an area of the Sahara west of the Nile on a mission to find painted caves. It was during this trip that Hannah found the closest thing to a spitiual connection (without getting religious) in the vast expanse of wilidneress and decided that she simply had to visit the world's greatest wilderness - Antarctica. During her first group expedition to the frozen continent, Hannah found that her physique allowed her to excel at endurance sports and she quickly went from beginner to a valuable asset to the team. After joining the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as a crew member and spending several months out on the ocean, she invested in a high latitude sailing vessel and spend years living aboard in some extremely harsh conditions before deciding that her true passion was pulling a sled across icy terrain. She has been awarded two Guiness World Records for fastest solo unassisted expedition to the South Pole and the greatest number of trips to the South Pole of any human on the planet. Hannah was also faced with a serious rescue mission while on a solo trek to the North Pole. This unstoppable awesome female is now a Polar Consultant, running her own comapny Polar Expedition Training - training and preparing aspiring adventures for trips to the world's most extreme places. Humble, honest and truly passionate about what she does, Hannah epitomises what it means to make the most of life and shares some valuable insights into getting through the tough times when it would be so easy to quit. If you ever needed that extra push to start doing what you love to do no matter how scary it may seem - this podcast is for you!! Thanks for listening and please as ever feel free to share.

WhiskyCast hits the road again, this time to the luxurious New York Yacht Club. Glasgow is sponsoring one of the ships sailing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which reached New York City on Friday, and the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau sponsored a reception to celebate. Glengoyne Distillery's table was the highlight, with a whisky blending competition for guests to try their hand at nosing and blending their own whisky. We'll follow one amateur blender through his turn at the table, and it's a perfect time for us to look at a "conventional wisdom" of the whisky world -- that there are 32 primary aromas the human nose can detect. As Kevin Erskine and Charles MacLean tell us, science has rendered that theory obsolete. In the news, Glasgow's controversial proposal to ban glasses from the city's pubs has been shattered...and we'll have the details on Episode 47 of WhiskyCast!
