Jesus himself wasn't a promoter of divisive labels, such as religion, but rather a representative of divine truth. In today's episode we look closer at the real facts of death and dying, through the light of the Vedic teachings. We emphasize how one should have a practical approach toward spirituality, and not get caught up focusing on extraordinary experiences. And you'll hear us differentiate between their genuine faith and its polar opposite of fanaticism. On that note, we didn't make this episode to delve into the cruelty of how they were treated. Reincarnation (and thus, karma) was taught by Jesus as well as the early fathers of Christianity. When that concept was removed, several strange concepts were put into place - that are still being taught. For example, the eternal damnation that follows if you don't take the one and only chance you have in this lifetime, the creation of the soul at the time of conception, and the idea that our suffering is not really due to our past actions - but due to the original sin committed by Adam and Eve. In this episode of Breaking Trail, we discuss the concepts of karma and reincarnation and their relationship with Christian teachings. We explore the idea that actions influence future outcomes, supporting this with Paul's words from Galatians 6:7-9, "A man reaps what he sows," which serves as a cornerstone for understanding spiritual laws of cause and effect. We examine the historical decision by Justinian in 550 AD to remove reincarnation from Christian doctrine, a decision that introduced major theological shifts and inconsistencies. Life is really a continuous journey of spiritual evolution, which aligns with teachings from both the Vedas and early Christian texts. Highlights: (8:16) How new concepts were introduced, such as original sin from Adam's disobedience in Garden of Eden (20:39) All religions teach we're children of God, so what about animals? (28:18) Reincarnation makes sense from different angles, given the contradiction of a loving God with a single lifetime chance (34:21) Blaming God for one's suffering (40:35) Following the rules for spiritual life: obedience to a higher authority (51:15) Freedom from karma through spiritual service Recorded on January 22, 2024. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

We see two extremes in today's world. On one hand we see states ruled by some religious sect which are often characterised by violence, fanaticism, and intolerance. On the other we have highly secular states that outwardly seem more peaceful, but where the erosion of the spiritual foundation means there is no longer any moral standard for the people to follow. In today's talk you'll hear how America was originally founded trying to go beyond these two extremes. Its founders were Christians who had broken off from the Church of England, wanting to establish a state based on spiritual principles but without fanaticism. Unfortunately, just recently, a new Speaker of the House was elected who believes that the Bible is the only way and the only truth. Not only has this nothing to do with real religion, but this fanatic spirit is the root cause of the societal divide and hatred we see today. Highlights: (1:14) About the new US Speaker of the House (9:18) How America was founded upon spiritual values (15:55) God is present in all His teachings, wherever they are to be found (24:54) Should we separate church and state? The essence of spiritual life is understanding that I am not made of flesh and blood. I am not my body; I am the spirit soul inside. The Bible makes this very clear in verses such as “though our outer body is decaying, yet our inner body is being renewed day by day” and “flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God”. Unfortunately, many times these verses are not fully appreciated and understood. Today we look closer at these verses in the light of the yoga wisdom. We explore our very essence and the purpose of it all; far beyond the physical body. We discuss the impact of materialism, the mistaken belief that "I am my body," and its consequences in society. You'll also hear us address the conflicts arising from sectarian viewpoints (us versus them) and emphasize the true nature of religion as harmonizing and based on love. We touch upon our need for spiritual food and the perishable nature of the material body in contrast to our eternal spiritual essence. And what was the heart of his teachings? We explore the many misconceptions surrounding Jesus' life and teachings and reflect upon the commercialization of Christmas and the overshadowing of its spiritual significance. You'll get an insight into Jesus's humble beginnings, his inclinations toward spiritual matters from a young age, and the importance of glorifying the Supreme Father - not Jesus by himself. We discuss Jesus' focus on the kingdom of God and how he challenged people's attachment to material wealth. Jesus' message was love, humility, and service to God–values that we all need more of in our lives. Regardless of our age, nationality, or religion. This is the first episode of our new series ‘The Heart of Jesus' that we will publish at least until Christmas. Highlights: (6:06) The appearance of Lord Jesus Christ; innkeepers provided space in an animal shed and Jesus was born in a most humble setting (16:34) Jesus display of wisdom at young age stirred curiosity about his identity. Jesus is the son of God, not the Father Himself. In this episode we look at the phenomenon of mass shooting on an individual level, and get to the root cause of what it is that actually creates a mass shooter. As you'll hear, the problem isn't simply the guns. Mass shootings were not occurring as frequently in the past even when more households owned guns. The problem lies rather in a complete breakdown of moral and spiritual values in society which is leading to increased mental health issues, hopelessness–and anger turned outward. Through verses and teachings from ancient yoga scriptures, we highlight the significance of serving a higher purpose and transcending material desires associated with money. We have the same desires as always but a body that is unable to fulfill those desires. This podcast is from we sat down for a reality check on old age. Because after all, if you know the truth, the picture isn't that dark and gloomy. Old age is simply a reminder that death is coming closer every day. Additionally, we discuss Jesus and his role as a perfect yogi and how following his teachings can lead to a joyful life. Highlights: (6:23) Yoga originates from Vedic teachings and has been around since the beginning of creation, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Yoga became popular in the West during the late 60s/early 70s with the rise of the hippie movement. (23:27) Balakhilya's spiritual journey meeting his spiritual guide: he was introduced to chanting and Bhakti yoga, which corrected his misconceptions and changed his outlook. (33:47) Balakhilya had an enlightenment about being God, but was corrected by his spiritual guide who taught him about a higher truth, namely having a loving relationship with the Supreme Soul. (39:41) The message of the material world is ever-present, but studying scriptures can provide the truth about the real essence of life (57:43) Yoga means linking or union, specifically between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul. It involves harmonizing one's will with and having desire to please the Supreme Person, leading to a perfect relationship. Work needs to be done on our side to reach that perfection. (1:02:24) The soul's true essence is the need for love, care, and protection. This episode is centred around a question a friend of Ruben had for him, namely what the next step is if one wants to develop spiritually. What practices are important, and if I'd like to make some form of plan; how should it look? Answering the question, we discuss the danger of relying on our senses to come to understand the Absolute Truth. We need to rely on authentic knowledge and perfect teachers rather than relying on our imperfect senses, the societal norms or what our friends and family tell us. Having plans and goals and plans is all good, but we need to ultimately tune in to the plan that the Supreme Person has for us. Balakhilya also shares personal examples and gives very practical tips for daily spiritual practices such as hearing and chanting mantras as well as remembering that the self is not the body; which are the first three and most important processes of Bhakti Yoga. Highlights: (1:08) What to do after deciding to implement a spiritual practice in life? Knowledge is the first step, including knowing that we can't rely on our senses. (7:54) Material pleasures are temporary and not satisfying to the soul, exemplified by smoking and its negative health effects (15:14) The first steps in bhakti yoga are hearing and chanting mantras and the Absolute Truth, followed by remembering; for example, reinforcing the truth that you are not your physical body (26:42) The bhakti yoga process involves devotional practices, all fully structured and arranged by the Supreme Arranger (38:43) Climbing Mount Everest costs around $65,000 to $100,000 and 12 people already died trying this year (5 more are missing). But despite the investment required and risks involved, those who are motivated will do whatever it takes to make it. This teaches us that desires are essential, and we need to increase our desire for spiritual fullfillment to be successful. (7:08) What happened when the Muslims and Hindus combined together to try to defame Haridas (16:45) Despite the fact that the prostitute didn't at all come to Haridas for spiritual enlightenment (quite the opposite, she came to defame him), Haridas has mercy on her and remained in his cave just to give her a chance to be purified. (24:25) It's an illusion that satisfying our desires will somehow stop them. Desires will always come like rivers incessantly flowing into the ocean, but if we simply are undisturbed, like the ocean, then they will not affect us. (30:34) The example of when some friends of ours gave people access to an unlimited supply of delicious waffles; material desires will never satisfy us but simply burn us out. However, engaging in a spiritual activity will gradually purify and satisfy us. Recorded on June 4, 2022. A relative to a friend of Ruben is right now on his deathbed, in the later stages of cancer. And sooner or later, you and me might also be in a similar situation—facing the reality that at any time, one of our loved ones will leave this world. We might feel confused, uncertain, uncomfortable, or simply overwhelmed by emotions. But when this time comes, it's time for us to lift ourselves above all of that and be of real service as that person is leaving this world. This episode is a recording from when Ruben asked Balakhilya: What to tell a dying man? Highlights: (0:00) Ruben introduces the situation of his friend's relative leaving this world at any time; there is nothing better you can tell somebody than the truth. (7:41) ‘You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.' Absolute truth is as purifying as the transcendental mantras. (17:03) We need to start by making it clear that a person is not their body. No matter if we feel unqualified to share the truth, we need to try; a person hanging of a cliff will not care whether or not the person saving him is a 16-year or kid. (25:08) Forget about your insecurity, trust the higher power to guide you correctly; Balakhilya have never given a talk where he afterwards hasn't felt that he could have explained things in a better way. (34:57) Every one of us are going to die. In society today, we just hide away the old people in homes so we don't get to experience the reality of (and suffering involved in) old age and death Recorded on February 8, 2023. We learned from the previous episodes how we are actually an eternal spark of life, a spirit soul. Now what? Do we just kind of float around and exist, that's it? No - we have an eternal function, an activity in which we align with our true selves and find true happiness. And that is to serve others, and serve the Supreme. Like Bob Dylan sang back in 85: “You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody” So who do you choose to serve? Highlights: (0:00) We're not in full control - and that's how it's meant to be. Balakhilya shares his realisations when starting on the yoga path. (8:37) We read and comment on the lyrics of Bob Dylan's song “Gotta Serve Somebody”. Service is our eternal natural function. (18:20) For our tendency to serve to be satisfying, we ultimately need to serve the Supreme Person. And that's not about joining a religion. (29:03) The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. This can be a gradual process, and you will never come out a loser. (35:59) The real joy as a parent is being able to serve one's kids. (40:37) This knowledge is called Raja Video - the king of all knowledge. It's a new year; now we've got an amazing opportunity to choose to act on that knowledge. Recorded on January 3, 2022. We learned last week that we are not our bodies; neither our gross physical body or our subtle mental body. This time we dive deeper into the truth that we don't stop existing at the time of death. You, me, and everyone else - indeed everything around you that shows the symptoms of a life particle being present (including animals & trees) - are the life of the body. And live never ceases to be. “Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings, nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.” Bhagavad-gita 2.12 This is the second part of a 3-part series on “Who Am I?”, where we dive deep down into our actual essence. Highlights: (0:55) Even though we can't directly perceive the wind outside, we can know it's windy through the symptoms (trees swaying in the wind for example). Similarly, even though we can't directly perceive the presence of life, we can detect it by its symptoms (5:53) How near-death experiences proves that we separate from our bodies through people being able to observe themselves from the outside while being “dead” (10:04) At the time of death, the shape of our mental body determines our next destination (16:24) According to the Vedas, everybody is afraid of death. But we can conquer that fear by knowing the truth; “Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings, nor in the future, shall any of us cease to be” BG 2.12 (22:07) All these true teachings are for people who want to know truth. That's a perfect truth, a perfect realization.” If you don't know who you are, how could it ever be possible to know where to go and what to do with your life? Without knowing you you are, you cannot solve any of the problems you'll face in life; not feeling complete satisfied, struggling with the temporary material body, feeling like you don't fit in, and so on. This is the first part of a 3-part series on “Who Am I?”, where we dive deep down into our actual essence. Highlights: (1:08) Understanding that I'm not the body is a huge step towards perfection in life (5:06) Ruben's sharing the story of a friend who was promised she'd be happy through getting a top-education and a good job. Having graduated and not finding a job, she feels like a big failure in life. (16:18) The Vedas teaches that we are not material, but a tiny spiritual spark; a spark of life. That is the beginning to understanding who we are. (23:17) There's even a life particle in Ruben's Christmas palm tree. You can notice the presence of a spirit soul through the apparent symptoms of life. (28:56) If the soul is there, the body is highly valuable. This time we're joined by a family who suddenly lost a wife, mother and grandmother, as Madhavendra very recently passed away. We feel very fortunate and humbled to be let into the inner world and feelings of a family that all live a yoga meditation lifestyle. How is the ancient wisdom of yoga a source of shelter and great comfort for them? And why, despite this being a challenging time, can they simultaneously feel great joy and love? Highlights: (0:05) When Madhavendra Puri dasi left this world, it wasn't a big drama but a wonderful transition(6:10) Madhavendra's daughter Shalie shares her story of living as a hippie child in Australia before Madhavendra was introduced to the process of meditation and took a 180 turn(9:25) How Allan met and came to marry Madhavendra, and how he was introduced to meditation by her(16:17) Allan shares how he felt when Madhavendra had left; he lost companionship but is also emboldened to become more dedicated to the Bhakti Yoga process, inspired by her(23:20) Madhavendra's health gradually got worse after being diagnosed with ALS. There is really no hope—for the material body. Nor for the material utopia we sometimes dream about. But there is real hope for you, the spirit soul. What is that hope? Coming to know about and gradually realize your true nature as eternally joyful, vibrant, and youthful. And we can move forward in that direction—if we choose to do so. Highlights: (2:14) Ruben shares story of how he and his family went for a concert tour for nursing homes, sharing the message of “There is hope”(11:19) There's so much difficulty in the world. But if the consciousness of the people could be elevated, we would overcome all difficulties.(18:21) We are all spirit souls, regardless of the body we are in, and it's our nature to be ever youthful and happy. We are all searching for the same thing—happiness, love, affection. And that's where hope is.(26:16) Reading from Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.10.43: “There is another nature which is eternally existent, without being occasionally created or destroyed. And the conditioned soul can understand what he should do and how his valuable energy may be utilized.” Our faulty understand of life is due to our being materially conditioned. The conditioned soul needs to know the truth to get out of that illusion.(36:02) Balakhilya's answer to the question “What is real hope? And where do we find it?”(44:26) It's not all or nothing; even a little advancement on this path can protect one from the worst kind of fear, namely losing the human form of life. We can always find excuses to not do what we should do. But if we're wishy washy, we are not going to be successful in life. Building internal strength and determination is an absolute necessity, and we do that by following the time-proven and scientific Bhakti Yoga process. Highlights: (1:47) If we make a focused effort to apply the process of Bhakti Yoga, that will keep us in the mode of goodness and keep lethargy and sluggishness away. Some tips from Balakhilya: exercise, spend time in nature, sing, and stay away from eating meat.(18:44) The two different kinds of motivation: motivation and self-motivation. We need to be honest about our weaknesses.(23:05) The secret to be able to get up early in the morning—which allows you to get the most out of your life—is to protect your evenings. If you're wishy washy, you're not going to be successful.(29:56) Balakhilya shares a story about his friend who has ALS. Suddenly, he got very serious about the whole process and started preparing for death. Others are teaching us to ‘enjoy life' and ‘be here now', so what we're presenting in this podcast is different than what you may hear somewhere else.(37:05) The challenge to our spiritual life is on a mental level, because we're so influenced by material nature that just buries us, and we've been buried for a long time. But just that feeling of having the GPS-watch… I had the direction of the cabin, but for three hours all you could see was two meters in front of you at best, and we had to put our ski poles in front of us to feel what was up and down. And all along you have this big, steep canyon to the right, with an obvious avalanche risk; so you don't want to fall into it. Always you always know it's there, somewhere to your right. You're forced by nature to become so small, so powerless. So you've got to have some faith in some authority greater than you, an inner compass that is not affected by the storm. In my case, the GPS. It's tough, it's hard, but at the same time it's not; because you've been given guidance - if you just dare to follow it.” Highlights: (3:28) The story of Ruben skiing through an ice storm in the mountains outside Tromsø, Norway, in the middle of May 2022(12:34) You can't depend on the forecast (such as from tarot cards or palm reading), you got to have an inner compass or direction that is not affected by the weather(17:14) Life is a storm; sometimes more severe, sometimes less. We are all hungry for real love, but nothing but the real thing will ever satisfy that hunger. In that way, lust is not bad, it's just a manifestation of an inner spiritual hunger, a desire that comes out in a perverted or distorted way. The good news is that all we need to do is to come out of the influence of the current of lust, and place ourselves under the influence of spiritual love. But that requires a decision from us to listen to and repeat the Absolute Truth - and thus remember who we really are. That is; an eternal spirit soul, starving for the nourishment of spiritual love. This is part 2 of ‘Lust vs Real Love'; if you haven't already, we recommend you to first listen to episode #44 to fully understand the difference between lust and love. Highlights: (2:45) Lust is a manifestation of inner spiritual hunger(9:48) As lust is transformed into its natural condition of spiritual love, the person begins to taste not just the sweet flavour of love, but also its handmaidens such as kindness, patience, forgiveness, tolerance, humility, etc.(17:53) Spiritual life means coming out of the influence of the current of lust, and coming under the influence of the current of spiritual love(27:03) You can give a hungry man a cardboard pizza and it will fill his belly, but not satisfy his need for nourishment. Similarly, the spiritual hunger will be there until we address it.(36:59) We need ask ourselves, “What am I exposing my eyes and ears to? What influences do I put myself under?” and consider how that will affect our consciousness. The ancient yoga wisdom gives us all the intel so that we know who and where the enemy is. Real love has become so rare that we barely even know what it means any more. What we think is love is often just lust in disguise; that is, based on mutual exploitation and sense enjoyment. Consequently, instead of living the life we are meant to live—a life of inner satisfaction, contentment and harmony—we suffer from jealousy, anger, bitterness and anxiety in our relationships toward others. Regardless if it's our partner, family, friends or colleagues. “Therefore, lust and are quite different. Lust is like dense darkness, but love is like the bright sun.” Chaitanya-Charitamrita Adi-lila 4.178 So what is the key to opening our hearts and allowing the light of real love to enter? How can I know the difference between lust and real love? And how can I make my relationships truly nourishing and fulfilling? Highlights: (04:08) There word “sin” has been cancelled—there is no longer any right or wrong, everything you feel like doing is good(10:02) From contemplating some object of the senses (could be anything from hiking shoes or a beautiful man/woman), attachment develops. From attachment (wanting to own it, enjoy it) comes lust. From lust comes anger and loss of memory.(24:24) Like George Harrison sang; “Senses never satisfied, only swelling like the tide”. Lust is like a fire, the more you throw into it, the hotter it burns.(38:45) Lust is just the perverted downward reflection of love, and to turn it back into its natural state we need to engage in devotional service(53:31) “Pure love for the Supreme is eternally established in the heart of the living beings; it is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, the living entity naturally awakens” Recorded on March 19, 2022. If we want to feel good and be happy, what we eat is one of the most important factors to consider. We all know that some foods are healthier than others, but fewer know that different foods will impact our mental condition in a specific direction. Depending on what food we eat, we come under the influence of one of the 3 modes of material nature (psychological forces); goodness, passion, or ignorance. As a consequence of this choice, we may experience agitation, anxiety, depression, stress—or peace of mind and heart. “Foods in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one's existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such nourishing foods are sweet, juicy, fattening and palatable. Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, pungent, dry and hot, are liked by people in the modes of passion. Such foods cause pain, distress, and disease. Food which is tasteless, stale, putrid, decomposed and unclean, is food liked by people in the mode of ignorance.” Bhagavad-gita 17.8-10 Highlights: (2:46) We need proper information in order to make conscious food choices; for example, food in the mode of goodness automatically has an uplifting result in your life. (7:06) The whole material world is comprised of three modes of material nature; goodness, passion and ignorance. We have the power to change which influences we are under, and one of the main ways is by what we eat. (17:26) You're going to feel different inside if you eat mode of goodness food; “Foods in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one's existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction” Bhagavad-gita 17.8-10 (29:34) According to the Vedas, meat should not be consumed. But if that's what we want, we will always find the arguments to allow us to maintain our destructive lifestyle and give a feeling that “I'm okay”. The Vedic system of health is handed down since time immemorial. (37:20) Certain lifestyles are going to have an effect on your heart; either by making it softer or harder. If you actually develop love for other living entities, you can't do the cruel things that are necessary to produce the food that your tongue has become addicted to. (47:08) Changing our diet can be a very gradual evolution towards more vegetarian foodstuffs. And suddenly you'll start to see that actually, all that McDonalds has to offer is a decent bathroom. All genuine spiritual processes are based on discipline. And even if you strive for material success, you will still need to apply the spiritual principles of hard work, respect, discipline, and a higher goal. This episode was inspired by Emma Raducanu, the 18-year old tennis star who won the US Open in September 2021, who explained that her success was due to her hard training and discipline at home, inspired by a grandmother who had such a determination that nothing could bring her down. You'll hear us talk a lot about the role of parents, and how the training should begin in the home. The fact is, we've become so afraid of hurting or offending our kids that we shy away from saying ‘no' to and disciplining them. Which in the end will hurt them far more. We bring up the example of the so-called leaders of today's society, who are simply grown up kids fighting with each other for lordship over the sandbox. Similarly, in spiritual life, following any desire we might have or just “doing what we feel like”—without any authority, discipline or actual guidance on where happiness is to be found—will at best only take us in circles. Highlights: (05:05) The story of the 18-year old tennis star Emma Raducanu who won the US Open; spiritual life is based on discipline, something that is missing heavily in today's society(15:28) We need to dare to say ‘no' to (and discipline) our children. If you want the highest level of material life, you've got to apply spiritual principles to achieve it; discipline, respect, hard work, and a higher goal.(27:04) The functioning, active members of society are just grown up (immature) kids. When Balakhilya grew up, kids always had had duties to perform, work to do.(34:19) How Bhaktivedanta Swami came to the hippie movement and introduced the no-discipline hippies into the world of real spiritual life, happiness and discipline(43:48) The ‘Chant Anyway' writing by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur; there will be ups and downs, and we need to have the discipline to keep chanting anyway(1:09:22) In the spiritual world, everything is perfect; every word is a song, every step is a dance.
