Mike Johnson, the US Speaker of the House, has called for the Justice Department to release the files of deceased sex-offender Jeffrey Epstein. President Donald Trump has been facing increased backlash from fellow Republicans for not properly handling the case - which Trump campaigned on getting to the bottom of. US correspondent Dan Mitchinson says the White House has been trying to shift public attention away from this case - but the division is making it hard to ignore. Compelling communication about risks and necessary actions is of special interest throughout the Ten Across geography. As we continue to follow the course of recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, we took a closer look at journalism on the ground-- reporters doing their best to convey urgent information at multiple and sometimes personal scales. On the heels the hottest 12 months in recorded history, parts of the Los Angeles metro burned during most of January. Ten months of abnormally dry conditions in the city were preceded by two very wet winters. Scientists refer to this increasingly common phenomenon as hydroclimate volatility or whiplash. It has been shown to be aggravated by climate change, and in Southern California, it creates the essential ingredients for large-scale wildfire. As inaugural director of the Annenberg Center for Climate Journalism and Communication at the University of Southern California, Allison Agsten's job is to study how the news media and other communication professionals are informing audiences of climate change risks and impacts. In 2023, we invited her to share this important work and to lead our Climate Communications workshop at our Ten Across Summit in Los Angeles. Allison is, unfortunately, also a recent survivor of the Palisades Fire conflagration. As her neighborhood burned and the media converged around her home last month, she conducted some research in real time by asking them whether their reports would cover the ways climate change influenced the disaster. In this episode, we'll hear what they had to say and what Allison believes this means for the future of climate journalism in the U.S. Related articles and resources: “What I Learned from LA Reporters Covering the Fires” (Allison Agsten, USC Annenberg Center for Climate Journalism and Communication blog) “The media needs to show how the climate crisis is fueling the LA wildfires” (The Guardian Opinion, January 16, 2025)“US Speaker suggests withholding disaster aid over California immigration policies” (9 News, January 23, 2025) “How partisan news outlets frame vested interests in climate change” (Journal of Environmental Management, February 2025) “Consuming cross-cutting media causes learning and moderates attitudes: A field experiment with Fox News viewers” (Center for Open Science, 2023) “What We Can Learn from the LA Fires with Char Miller” (Ten Across Conversations podcast, January 30, 2025) “Urban Expert Bill Fulton's Perspective of How LA Can Rebuild Following the Fires” (Ten Across Conversations podcast, January 15, 2025) “NOAA Meteorologists Reflect on This Year's Historic Atlantic Hurricane Season” (Ten Across Conversations podcast, November 22, 2024)
House Speaker Mike Johnson demanded that the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States should be fired, while Trump criticized Zelensky and refused a meeting. - Почему спикер палаты представителей Майк Джонсон потребовал от него уволить посла Украины в США, а Трамп выступил с критикой Зеленского?
Nancy Pelosi has been at the top of US politics for nearly 40 years - as the first, and only, woman in US history to serve as speaker of the House, she has played a central role in some of the most consequential American events of the last two decades, from the Iraq war to the US Capitol attack and Donald Trump's impeachment. In her latest book, “The Art of Power: My Story as America's First Woman Speaker of the House” Pelosi gives a behind-the-scenes look at her formidable political career. In this episode of The American Fourcast, she talks to Channel 4 News's Matt Frei about what she's learned about politics and power after nearly four decades in Washington, why Donald Trump is “dangerous” and what's next for America as the Presidential election approaches. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Shaheen Sattar, Rob Thomson.

We see two extremes in today's world. On one hand we see states ruled by some religious sect which are often characterised by violence, fanaticism, and intolerance. On the other we have highly secular states that outwardly seem more peaceful, but where the erosion of the spiritual foundation means there is no longer any moral standard for the people to follow. In today's talk you'll hear how America was originally founded trying to go beyond these two extremes. Its founders were Christians who had broken off from the Church of England, wanting to establish a state based on spiritual principles but without fanaticism. Unfortunately, just recently, a new Speaker of the House was elected who believes that the Bible is the only way and the only truth. Not only has this nothing to do with real religion, but this fanatic spirit is the root cause of the societal divide and hatred we see today. Highlights: (1:14) About the new US Speaker of the House (9:18) How America was founded upon spiritual values (15:55) God is present in all His teachings, wherever they are to be found (24:54) Should we separate church and state? Description of the spiritual qualities. (34:56) Real religion means love; not a particular denomination. There is no room for fanaticism. (42:27) Purport on Matthew 7:21-23: Why did Jesus denounce his so-called followers and said “I never knew you”? (50:19) Jesus always spoke the truth, without being afraid. We should emulate divine qualities in ourselves. Recorded on December 11, 2023. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail
US Speaker of the House thinks he's Moses, holiday tradition at Vatican turns 800 years old, Denmark officially outlaws burning the Quran, Pew study about our spiritual-but-not-religious comrades, school board member takes oath on stack of banned books, Catholic women's college decides to admit trans women, and it turns out that all the fun Christmas songs were written by Jews and that pisses some Christians off.

Nearly forty years ago, the Super Bowl Shuffle came into being. It's been haunting Jim McMahon ever since. But it's been blessing Kristyn and Mary Mack, so that's a net positive. The Vikings may also be doing their own shuffling in the near future judging by how many unexpected wins they've been getting. In the first hour, SKOR North's Judd Zulgad talks about the Vikings upset win over the 49ers, and KSTP's Chris Egert on Rep. Tom Emmer being in play to be the new US Speaker of the House.Hour #2 features a surprise call from the immensely talented Marie Osmond who will be making her soap opera debut on October 27th when she stars in CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful".In hour #3 we've got a packed studio with Kristyn Burtt, Mary Mack, and Jim McMahon all at the same time. Speakers Dmitri Alperovitch, Elbridge Colby, and Jamil N. Jaffer discuss how the US can prepare for this eventuality, the urgency of the task at hand, and the possibility and consequences of the US losing a war with China over Taiwan in the next few years.
