The tireless efforts of Pope Saint John Paul II gave us the timeless Theology of the Body – and that has provided sound philosophical grounding from which to handle the ever shifting sands of moral turpitude of our modern era. Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and Dr. Deborah Savage discuss the Catholic Church's teachings on marriage, family, and human sexuality, particularly in the context of the challenges posed by the sexual revolution. They explore the importance of lived experience in understanding these teachings, the implications of recent changes within the Pontifical Academy for Life, and the philosophical foundations laid by John Paul II. The discussion emphasizes the need for a balance between lived experience and objective truth, the role of self-governance, and the significance of virtue in achieving true freedom.   00:00 - The Catholic Church's Stance on Contraception 02:55 - The Role of Lived Experience in Theology 05:49 - Response to the Pontifical Academy for Life's Document 09:05 - The Impact of the Sexual Revolution 11:58 - Bridging Theory and Experience 14:52 - Understanding Human Acts and Impulses 18:12 - John Paul II's Anthropology and Personalism 20:51 - The Importance of Self-Governance 24:03 - The Personalist Norm vs. Kant's Categorical Imperative 26:55 - The Path to Virtue and True Freedom 30:08 - Real Stories from the Frontlines   Dr. Deborah Savage joined the Theology faculty during the 2021-22 academic year, having taught both philosophy and theology at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for the previous thirteen years. Dr. Savage is the co-founder and acting director of the Siena Symposium for Women, Family, and Culture, an interdisciplinary think tank, organized to respond to John Paul II's call for a new and explicitly Christian feminism.     Dr. Savage is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and the American Catholic Philosophical Association. She served for several years as a member of the Board of Trustees at Franciscan University, resigning in 2021. Do you know the limitations of St. Thomas Aquinas' “pre-microscope” view on gender, and how it is still influencing the Church today? In this special episode on the feast of Pope St. John Paul II, Dr. Greg unpacks why JP2's teachings on gender, identity, and what it means to be human are exactly what the Church—and the world—needs right now.  Discussed in this episode: The limitations of Aquinas' “pre-microscope” view on gender and how it still influences erroneous views of gender roles; The “truth bomb” of JP2 that reshapes our understanding of gender, identity, and the dignity of the human person; The shift from a “pre-microscope” to “post-microscope” view of gender and why it matters; JP2's teachings as a foundational response to today's trans and gender identity confusion; Why mutual submission between men and women is essential to true equality; How Protestant approaches to gender often swing between extremes: complementarianism vs. egalitarianism; The Catholic response is a “both/and” approach in contrast to “either/or” pendulum swings; How JP2's insights into human dignity answer today's questions on gender and identity; Why Pope St. John Paul II is considered the most impactful Catholic psychologist of the 20th and 21st centuries; Why JP2's teachings serve as a lighthouse through today's “isms” and ideological shifts; Why understanding true human dignity is essential to addressing gender confusion. The book The Orthodox Church in the World contains theological talks given by the author in Cyprus, Russia, Romania and Georgia at a variety of conferences. The Orthodox Church in the World includes subjects as: Personalism and Person, Theology as Science and as Charisma, The Hesychastic Life according to St Basil the Great, Bringing Up Children Today, Dogma and Ethics and Orthodox Psychotherapy. There are interviews on Therapy and Truth and The Theology of St Gregory Palamas and the Scholasticism of Barlaam, and the final chapter is devoted to St Paissy Velichkovsky – A Great Hesychast Father who “unites the Holy Mountain with the Balkans and Russia.” An unusual feature of The Orthodox Church in the World is the record of the wide-ranging discussions that took place between the author the audience after each talk. Answers are given on issues of the spiritual life, which will help the clergy, monks and laypeople, parents and young people. True theology can transform society. The author points out to his audience the great importance and value of the Church's hesychastic tradition, which gives meaning to life. His Eminence the Metropolitan Hierotheos stresses that Orthodoxy possesses a spiritual therapeutic method for curing human beings so that, once cured, they can meet God as light and Paradise, and not as fire. Curing the human soul is not an individual act, but a method followed within the Church through the Sacraments and asceticism, by which man acquires unity with God. Discerning the depths of his listeners' hearts and their concerns, the author answers them from his heart, revealing aspects of his own personal life. At the end of book, prompted by the publication of the book St Paissy Velichkovsky, by Professor Antonios-Emilios Tachiaos of the Theological School of the University of Thessaloniki, the author identifies basic points from this impressive and surprising biography of St Paissy, who loved hesychia and the neptic tradition of the Church from his youth. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/athonite-audio/support

Welcome to Episode 180 of the Being Human Podcast: The Psychology of JP2: A Bold Proposal In this week's episode, Dr. Greg explores a bold new proposal for a Catholic standard of mental health rooted in the psychology of St. John Paul II. Dr. Greg entreats all Catholic psychologists and therapists to mine the treasures of JP2's Personalism in order to offer hope, clarity, and healing in an increasingly confused and suffering world. Discussed in this episode: Why St. John Paul II's psychology is more brilliant, effective and important to study than any other psychologist (including Freud) The significance of human dignity and personhood in mental health care How the teachings of JP2 can combat the modern mental health crises Pitfalls of a solely scientific approach to mental health The big difference between subjective criteria for mental health and a clear standard for mental health (and why there is no standard for mental health) Being a Catholic psychologist does not mean simply being Catholic in the secular study of psychology Anyone saying they are doing Catholic therapy should be an expert in both the science of psychology and the philosophy of psychology How a model that integrates the spiritual and material dimensions of the human person offers deeper insights and more effective care compared to secular models Find out how you can contribute to and benefit from a Catholic standard of mental health Resources mentioned or relevant:  Please share your feedback (drgreg@catholicpsych.com) and share this podcast episode with Catholic mental health professionals If you are a Catholic mental health professional, join the waiting list for Fellowship, a practical way to deeply connect the dots between your identity as a therapist and a Catholic Person and Act by Karol Wojtyla Person and Community by Karol Wojtyla Writings, speeches, and encyclicals of Pope St. John Paul II Setting the Stage: Early Plays of St. John Paul II   Past Being Human podcast episodes: Episode 174: Healing or Harm? Episode 118    In this episode, I dive deep into the topic of self-care, self-love, and how they relate to spirituality from a Christian perspective. I challenge the common misconception within some Christian circles that self-care may be seen as a sign of weakness or indulgence. I emphasise the importance of recognising our individual, personal needs for care and suggest that neglect of self-care might stem from past trauma. I encourage listeners to understand self-care as an expression of accepting God's love and affirm our worthiness for care, taking time to meet our physical needs without feeling guilty or indulgent. Embark on an intellectual expedition as we welcome Julian Assele to the podcast, guiding us through the labyrinth of Christian personalism's surprising harmony with leftist ideologies. Transitioning from conservative Catholicism to Marxism, Julian breaks the mold, challenging the conventional political and religious dichotomies. He offers rich anecdotes from his own evolution, broadening our understanding of figures like István Mészáros and Cardinal Ratzinger, while simultaneously drawing connections between Marxist humanism and Eastern Orthodox views on anthropology. Our conversation serves as a beacon for those adrift in the sea of complex ideologies, promising insights that interweave theology, philosophy, and political economy. In a landscape where organized religion's standing is in flux, we traverse through the dense forests of secularization to shed light on the nuanced interplay between personalism and Christianity. Noting the diversity within the Orthodox and Catholic perspectives on issues such as racism and Christian Zionism, we bridge the gap between contemporary political leanings and ancient philosophical roots. Julian's narrative weaves the past into the present, revealing the overlooked threads of personalism that trace back to Greek cosmos and the early Christian's divine dilemmas, thus framing humanity's intrinsic value and divine potential through the prism of personalism.Rounding off our journey, we scrutinize the tapestry of societal structures, unearthing the philosophical undercurrents that have shaped our modern identity. Julian's intriguing perspective on the Catholic Church's grappling with modernity and socialism stages a dramatic tableau of contradictions and harmonies within religious and socio-political realms. As the episode draws to a close, we steer you towards Julian's own work where he fuses Marxist political economy with biblical exegesis, offering an invaluable treasure trove for listeners eager to further explore these critical intersections. Imagine choosing between coca cola and freshly pressed sugarcane juice; just like our tastes differ, so do our spiritual paths. Some prefer to relate to the ocean of light or the impersonal path, while others embrace the personal form of the Supreme Lord. While at first the paths run parallel to each other—recognizing our true identity beyond the physical body and caring for the welfare of all—as we progress, a crucial decision awaits. Will we accept the existence of a Supreme Person or immerse ourselves in the ocean of light? Guided by the most authoritative yoga texts, namely the Bhavagad-gita, we look at which of these two spiritual paths lead to the highest perfection. We shed light on the rise of impersonalism as a social trend, with common catchphrases such as “We are all one” that often overshadows a deeper understanding of spirituality. Whether you're a true seeker or a curious observer, join us as we explore the path less traveled in pursuit of spiritual growth and enlightenment. Highlights: (4:17) Directly approaching the Lord for the final word; anecdote about fresh sugarcane juice at a market. (11:39) We discuss the choice between worshiping the impersonal void or the Supreme Person. We need guidance from real spiritual authorities. (26:52) Balakhilya shares a story from a lecture in Norway where two girls refused to hear anything about God in a meditation class. Regardless of whether we like it or not, God exists. (31:04) The true spiritual seekers go against the flow (35:49) We discuss the pitfalls of impersonalism and the conclusion that we are all God (41:40) Impersonalism has become a social trend with very popular catch phrases, and it's being promoted by the most influential people (46:51) Individual sincerity leads to finding a perfect teacher who guides and satisfies our desire to find the truth. Dr. Thomas D Williams has penned a hard-hitting and timely new book, The Coming Christian Persecution (Sophia Institute Press). A 2018 visiting research fellow for the Center for Ethics and Culture at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Williams has written widely on theology, philosophy, ethics, and spirituality. He teaches theology at St. John's University's Rome campus and has done extensive media work, including serving as consultant and commentator on faith, ethics, and religion for NBC, CBS, and Sky News in the UK. He was appointed by the Holy See as spokesman for the synod of bishops in 1997 and again in 2001. Williams's books include Who Is My Neighbor? Personalism and the Foundations of Human Rights and The World as It Could Be: Catholic Social Thought for a New Generation. He is also the author of the children's book The First Christmas (Sophia Institute Press, 2022). According to recent reports, Christian persecution is rising globally and religious freedom is at major risk. Throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and even in the West, Christian communities are being targeted for their beliefs, whether through violence or public policy, and it's a trend that continues to escalate and is on our doorstep. In 2020, according to the World Watch List published by Open Doors, 340 million Christians were facing "high levels of persecution." As a response to these injustices, Dr. Thomas Williams, Breitbart Rome Bureau Chief penned a hard-hitting and timely new book that masterfully reveals the state of affairs in countries that systematically persecute Christians—The Coming Christian Persecution issuing March 21st. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-aidan-byrne0/support

Part of spirituality is accommodating for personalism. There's a supreme and divine person extending love to us, and we can open ourselves up to receive it by taking a vulnerable step to be emotionally available and take down the walls built around our heart. Even if we have shortcomings and doubts, Krishna doesn't see any faults because he goes beyond the material. We can unveil ourselves to the effect of spiritual life by celebrating our experience, fanning the spark, and building new neural pathways.

“I try to solve inequality by day while contributing to it by night.” Many a professional do-gooder would have to acknowledge this paradox if forced to be honest. But not David and Amber Lapp, who, years ago, went to a working-class town in Ohio as researchers on love and marriage, only to stay as residents and neighbours. In this episode, they reflect on the past decade of living among people whose gifts, resentments, aches, and longings are so often mischaracterized (if not ignored) by the coastal lens. As the Lapps have sought to shine a light on the erosion of trust and covenant-making in the white working class, they've discovered their own humanity. A discovery, it turns out, that lies—necessarily—at the inception of any social change that will endure.

Both agree that nature points to a cosmic designer, but Ramage says he prefers, on aesthetic grounds, the idea that the biological realm has the capacity, gifted by God, to evolve on its own without the need for intervention by God. Behe notes that people have different aesthetic predilections, but it's the scientist's job not to figure out how he would have preferred things to have happened in nature, but to discover how they actually did come about. In every field of work, there are some interactions that are professional and some that can be more personal, and the lines between them are not always clear. How casual, how revealing, how personal can you be while keeping a businesslike and professional attitude? In an art career, this issue impacts your interactions in many ways—in talking with dealers and collectors, when you give talks and interviews, in setting the tone of your website, and any time you are meeting the public. Today we'll talk about the boundaries between personal and professional situations in an art career. Self-promotion is an important area in which personal and professional may collide. We are often advised in marketing art to be personal, to tell our story, to let our audience into our private lives to some extent. At the same time, setting boundaries around what we choose to reveal and be open about can provide a comfort level for both our audience and ourselves. Treating professionalism as your default mode is preferable in almost any situation in which you are presenting yourself to the public. Specific situations in which crafting a professional image include making posts on social media, creating your website, and in your relationships with galleries. For some people, feeling a little insecure and wanting to make a good impression can lead to over-sharing, while others with similar fears back away from revealing anything personal that could help others understand their work. Understanding the audience you are aiming to attract is important, especially if you are hoping to engage with galleries, curators, and collectors who have high professional standards. We do need to be ourselves in interacting with people interested in our work, which after all is personal, and where our ideas come from are impoirtant. But in public contexts erring on the side of being more formal, more reserved, and more dignified is a good strategy. If you are showing your work, selling your work, you need to have a bit of remove from the work, an objectivity, and that is best expressed by knowing the boundaries around professional behavior.
