A podcast for people looking to feel a bit braver about their work life. Bum jobs. Stuck. Skint. Adventures in freelancing. Took a lead role. Joined a start up. And now... I’m starting over. I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) It takes stamina, guts and more than a smattering of resilience. Don’t panic, this isn’t another podcast telling you to hustle harder. I’ve been there and got the burnout badge to prove it. I'm looking to find people who are doing the work they love, but it's been a bumpy ride. Starting over can be wonderful, agony and pants shakingly scary all at the same time. There are others who did it. Who are right in the centre of figuring that out. I'm trying to find the people, I needed to hear, at the time I felt I was free-falling from the loop-di-loop. Keep being courageous, Rachael x
James is a legend. In his own words he describes his Instagram story as accidentally building a personal brand. At nearly a quarter of a million followers that's no surprise really. He's shown up consistently and made content over several years on IG. He's been a brand and logo designer for 17+ years, and repeatedly says there's very rare overnight successes. His growth and success has been incremental and steady. What makes James' story inspirational is the backdrop to what happened before he got the design bug. James talks to me about what shook his world. At age 11 his life imploded - which fed into drugs and alcohol use. James is another guest who's embraced quitting alcohol and refocused his energy into exercise, building a life he loves and showing up consistently. Prepare to be challenged by his story. No matter how dark the situation, James is proof your past doesn't need to define you and you can create an exceptional life if you commit to it.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Kate and I go way back. We met in our 20s in our first proper job during the dot com boom. Kate went on to flourish working in digital media as a marketing director. She's held roles with plenty of responsibility in fast paced environments. One of the things I adore about Kate, is she wears her heart on her sleeve. Kate chats openly and honestly about a breaking moment that came not long after she lost her Dad. She describes her hectic routine like groundhog day and at some point it had to give.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Tyler is a modest and hardworking artist. His illustrations are intense, rather bonkers and saturated with bright and flouro colours. He's posted everyday for many years and built up a following of 297K on Instagram. When I asked him about how he had the creative stamina to be so prolific, he told me he had a punk attitude to his work. Tyler creates regardless of whether he feels like it or not and doesn't overly perfect his images - some pieces only take him a minute. It certainly challenged my approach to making something new each day!Tyler's commitment to making something new everyday for years has paid off richly. He's attracted collaborations with high end fashion clients: Gucci, Coach and Hermès, as well as working for Adobe, Instagram, Nike and the UN. I was delighted he found time to chat to me. I found Tyler to be full of ideas and candour about his own challenges and journey to becoming more courageous.Follow Tyler here:shoptylerspangler.cominstagram.com/tyler_spangler/Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. I heard Bella's story first time at an event in Manchester. I was taken aback. Bella told her story about being the survivor of sexual assault, and I knew I needed to ask her to share with me on the podcast. Bella does so brilliantly and bravely. She's honest about her healing journey and the varying steps and challenges in putting her life back together after trauma.Bella started Consent for Breakfast (orginally known as To Whom It May Concern) as a means of amplifying the issues around consent, rape and sexual assault. We talk today about how this has created a whole new sense of purpose and direction in her life. Even though Bella would never have chosen this path, her healing journey has swung open a door to something way more meaningful career wise than she'd have planned for herself hadn't she gone through it. Bella is a living testament that the richness of purpose can contain a road to recovery that isn't planned or chosen but redemptive in its nature.Learn more at: instagram.com/consentforbreakfast/Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. This man is full of courage. I had the total honour of discovering Kris' story through a mutual friend and couldn't quite believe what this man has been through. Up until 2020 Kris had been doing life at a certain pace. In his own words, a corporate man, working hard and providing for his family. He'd been having ongoing issues with sciatica pain in his leg. Eventually Kris got a scan and the shocking news he wasn't expecting: a large tumour mass had grown in his upper leg and pelvic bone - the only way forwards was for his whole leg to be removed.Kris' surgery is known as a hemipelvectomy - it's rare and considered up there and one of the most traumatic surgeries to recover from. More commonly associated with military and mine survivors. Kris chats to me candidly about his initial reactions to the diagnosis and what his rehabilitation journey has looked like since.Kris tells his ongoing story in his blog: kriskristensen.com/blogAnd is currently fundraising for a much more improved prosthetic, please consider sponsoring him here: helphopelive.org/campaign/19679Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Why a conversation on how to podcast?Shout out to my girl Anna Resnick. This conversation started over email. We covered most of the technical aspects that Anna wanted to know about my podcast set up and how to publish content. The stuff I wrote about having the confidence to invest in yourself, was a separate train of thought to that conversation. So is the question I posed about Why podcast? And the thoughts about transcripting, editing AI and SEO. Plus, another guest asked me how to podcast, so I thought this is too good a conversation NOT to share. This is not a word for word transcript of the podcast episode. (Phew). I recorded that as a non-scripted episode and wrote a tighter summary of what I said for this page. The chapter markers in the episode do match each section of what I explain below. Some of the products I mention are affiliates. I will tell you which are, most of the recommendations are not - I genuinely want to see more creative people have the confidence to get themselves out there. Any products I recommend I will also link to.These are the topics I cover:People who don't invest in their purpose
I met Mike where most great friendships start - in the DMs of Instagram. I gently, yet patiently explained to Mr Janda that British comedy was more than Monty Python... and from there the back and forth went until I had the delight to interview him today. Mike is a creative leader who built an agency of 70+ staff with a roll call of tech and entertainment clients, Disney, Google, NBC, ABC, National Geographic and Warner Bros to name a few.Mike now travels and meets creatives all over the world in his coaching business. In this conversation he generously shares his pearls of wisdom around what he learnt in building his company and where creatives come unstuck as entrepreneurs. One of the things that got my attention - was how genuine and trustworthy a creative leader Mike is. We talk about what it takes to build leadership skills, be bold and have fun with your creative career in the process.Learn how to expand your creative career with Michael's help here: instagram.com/morejandamichaeljanda.comKeep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Wait til you hear this story. Micah and Delana hail from a small rural town in Alabama called Hamilton. Through a series of dreams and conversations with friends, they felt God spoke to them specifically about moving to Manchester, UK. Without a ton of detail locked in place Micah and Delana felt an increasing desire and necessity to follow their call. Even when it meant relocating their four children and starting over in quite a different culture. The Wood's story is one of courage, faith and purpose unfolding. It's a powerful conversation if you feel you've got a crazy dream that you're not quite sure how it's going to work out. If that's something on your mind, their story is challenging and helpful to hear. Micah and Delana followed God's voice and the rest came together when they needed it. In Julie's own words she's getting to live vicariously through the rockstar women who have unique, trailblazing, and innovative careers. One interview at a time Julie tracks down the women with cool jobs - the self titled name of her podcast. I found Julie on Clubhouse and immediately gravitated towards her show.We connected some time ago, but I'm glad we restarted the conversation so we could record together Julie's experience of meeting the minds of some seriously smart and fascinating women doing something a bit different with their careers. I was pleased Julie could sit behind the other microphone of this podcast episode and celebrate all she's achieved so far in interviewing many women from around the world. We mention a fascinating woman who turned from pharmacist to calligrapher, the full conversation is here.Check out Women with Cool Jobs for more episodes: womenwithcooljobs.comKeep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. What a delight to interview a courage expert - I need one of these in my life! Sandra is a ray of light, shining everyday courage on people's mindsets and habits. She's not in the business of bravado or feats of bravery. Her passion is grounded in research and writing. Sandra breaks down the word courage to its heart and spirit level meaning. From that position she applies her skill and expertise in seeing people grow and flourish. We had a great conversation, talking about Sandra's principles, ways of working and books: COURAGE The Heart and Spirit of Every Woman and Face it! Not only that but he snagged a genius name for his coffee art on Instagram: Vincent Van Froth www.instagram.com/vincentvanfrothJoss is high energy and passionate about life, coffee, music and festivals. We talk about it all and I can't help wonder where Joss will end up. Joss firmly asserts that we need more silliness and hats in the world. Something I couldn't agree more with him on. Sas is by name and nature sass. I was chuffed to bits to get just under an hour with her talking through all things self belief, coaching and growth. Sas came from a city job doing management consultancy - before making the leap into her heart led business The Self Belief School https://selfbelief.school/Sas has created a safe space to heal self doubt. By the end of this episode it's likely you might want to grab an hour with Sas yourself. I ended up feeling that way! We had a delightful and eye opening chat about overcoming obstacles and dealing with limiting beliefs.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. I'm pleased to introduce you to an accomplished Manchester artist: Oskar with a K. You might have seen his work already. He's a street artist and muralist busy at work making messages stand out at large scale on walls, walkways and shop shutters. He started off in graffiti and now is commissioned to paint and run mural workshops. This was a gem of a conversation covering off what makes Oskar fire up creatively and what his overcoming hurdles were. He's been prolific in the last couple of years so there's plenty we chat about. It was such a privilege to interview Sadie. As you might have seen in the news women are leading the way for a disruptive revolution against fear and an oppressive regime in Iran. Women have come up against the loss and threat of life protesting freedom and rights to be and express who they are. It's hard to fathom in the West because we take these freedoms for granted.Sadie is a ray of light shining her experience on such a difficult subject. Originally raised in Iran and spent her teen and uni years there, it was no easy journey discovering music and performance was going to be her calling. The legal threat to Sadie attempting to express her artistry was real and something she had to be rather fearless in pressing forwards with.If ever I'm going to interview someone about mining deep for the courage to express their art I think this episode embodies it. Sadie is courage through and through. Today's guest is someone who I found in her own space of calm at Beautiful Voyager https://bevoya.com I was delighted to find this site in the scattered world of mental health blogs - Meredith's site stood out as a peaceful oasis. Somewhere you can create a lighthouse on a mental health map of well wishes across the world.Meredith Arthur has many strings to her bow. She's a chief of staff creating emerging ideas at Pinterest connected to emotional wellbeing. And a published author: Get Out of My Head - an illustrated guide for over-thinkers. I was pleased to have 45 minutes with Meredith, chatting all things mental health, anxiety and overcoming. Not to mention dealing with perfectionism and some talk of hustle culture. If your internal world has felt connected to achievement and striving for more at the cost of your wellbeing and inner peace - this might be a good conversation to dive into.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but I managed to get an interview with one of my favourite creators on Instagram: Lu in Luland. What da?! If you haven't already discovered her, Lou has been dancing, doing get dressed with me videos and becoming a badass in the process. The two things that grabbed me about Lou: she's a creative pioneer and an irresistible people connector. Lou puts high value on community and finding the creative spark that cuts right through average. Don't underestimate the outfit changes and dancing on her bins... She's on a serious mission to spread fun, fitness and love thy self. You have to see Lou's style: she's anti-ageing and anti-beige-ing. This will inspire you to start something new with a KICKARSE ATTITUDE.Also keep your eyes peeled for Susie - that's Lou's bus she'll be taking on tour. Meeting Kate for the first time online, I planned to do a quick bit of prep ahead of our podcast recording - going through the practicals and reassuring her I wasn't a weirdo. That might have undone itself. When I asked Kate what she wanted to chat about - she described something that seriously resonated. As I did some low level weeping (not again Rach) through our first video call, she calmly expressed how the understanding of seasons - and their distinct functions - gives us the grace and freedom to be creative and work in tune with ourselves. Mainstream business culture doesn't really hold space for that concept.Kate takes the time to explain how each season of nature, when applied to our work and creative patterns - sets us up for a much healthier, rounded life. And enables us to counter burn out and productivity busy-ness.Kate has also applied this thinking to navigating menopause. Nicola is one of my go to friends to chat through big ideas together. We met on Twitter some years ago and still need to meet up IRL. Nicola is a designer and educator at a Scottish art school. In this conversation we have a go at unpeeling a vast topic - what will education look like for Gen Alpha?Nicola's own teaching practice has been shaped by growth mindset thinkers like Matthew Syed, author of Rebel Ideas and Black Box Thinking. Nicola was a helpful voice and kind friend who in part, reshaped my own thoughts on failure and moving onwards when career dreams get dashed. This isn't the story of a 20 year old's side hustle. It's not a content machine that cranks out tik toks for fast track fame. It's kinda the opposite of that. It's done with consideration, on plenty of sleep and after time with friends. Diego decided to start a blog a few months back about men's mental health. It's thoughtful, honest, well crafted writing. Diego tackles the obvious subjects that come up for men and their emotional wellbeing. He also deals with some of the stuff that guys prefer to brush away too. I'm delighted we got to chat. Okay, I'm quietly smug here, this is Emily's first podcast interview - I've a feeling she might be doing a few in the near future. I first discovered Emily's work at my hairdressers in Manchester: Taylor Swift painted on the glass in all her glory. It grabbed my attention right-away and off I googled Lobster House Studios.Emily's story is all about leaning into your creative dreams. She had worked in schools for most of her 20s and then the pandemic hit. With a lot of time on her hands, what once was a hobby and favour for friends, ended up becoming her main job: a window artist. At the same time Emily's husband decided to crowd fund and successfully raise the cash for making maverick card games. A surprising result of lockdown that neither of them could have predicted.Emily shares with me the very cool, unexpected story of what happens when you trade your comfort for a box of Posca pens and character portraits on glass.View Emily's work in all it's gloryKeep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Micah makes art and designs large scale visuals, that are a kind but firm two finger salute to what we usually see in advertising. He has shown his work alongside Turner prize winner Douglas Gordan and global street artist JR at Wembley. His work life has been full of incremental, consistent courage. Micah's not been swayed by being a big name on social media or running after an agency design career. He's consistently made work in the opposite direction of what most ads rely on: the need for something to increase my intrinsic value.Micah quotes, "Ads are like friends with ulterior motives." His work celebrates people and he writes pithy one liners that cut through consumerism:Power in unityHope is a catalystWisdom is divine look both waysPut down your phone and talk to meHe had a dream, imagining every billboard showing a picture just of the sky. He did get commissioned to do one of those. Micah also founded Add-Art: ad spaces he curates showing artists' and designers' work instead of selling stuff. That's just some highlights of a really interesting and varied 20 year career. Victoria is putting herself out there in a way she would never have chosen or planned for. She's debunking the knotty string of health and challenges that come with surgical menopause. I knew nothing about this topic before finding the madcap, honest and funny world of Victoria's on Instagram. She goes under the name of Ginge Unhinged. Self deprecating and playful on the surface, Victoria deals with the harder realities of hitting menopause in her 30s and the mental health unravelling tied to that. Victoria knew there was a gap within her age group talking and making content in the way she needed. Ginge Unhinged is a story of day by day bravery and how your creative commitment can play a vital part in your mental health recovery. I am full of admiration for this woman. Victoria is a natural, honest communicator and is working on her menopause book, due to come out later this year. Cancer healed me of a broken heart.I never expected to type out these words about something so extreme. But I needed an extreme jolt of something to break me out of my heartache. I've talked about the symptoms of burnout. But at the centre of it all was a big sense of loss and sadness. And the absolute head f*ckery of part creating something your friends end up meeting the loves of their lives on. While I'm left wondering if my future love is even in the UK. Saying it's a lot to process is somewhat of an understatement. Being told I had an aggressive cancer and that a tumour had been growing inside of me for many months was the extreme wake up call that I needed. It doesn't really make sense. I'm aware of that. But listen to this episode as I unpack some of the thought processes and emotional journey of working through oesophagus cancer towards remission. I was presented with a choice: absorb the data around my cancer diagnosis or choose to believe a higher power had my life covered. I chose the latter. It wasn't really an option. I don't want to move forwards with my life worrying about how long I might or might not have. My cancer doctor told me to cross my fingers, but I told him I'd definitely be praying instead. To not be fazed about the data surrounding any challenging situation, you've got to look at something bigger. Something grander, more steadfast and powerful to hold onto. Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. I have a new tummy. 50% of it was thrown out with the hospital waste one day last November.I had an oesophagectomy. A surgeon removed an advanced tumour and another one reshaped my oesophagus with my stomach. I was told my relationship with food would change forever. I don't feel hunger. I was advised to eat small portions - about 6 to 8 meals per day. I'm managing something like 3 to 4. One of those is usually ice cream or a glass of wine spaced far enough away from my pain meds. It's been the most demanding thing I've been through physically. But I'm filled with immense gratitude I could have this life saving surgery. I used to describe myself as a bit of a foodie. The ritual of it, the making of it, the socialising around it. I had food on my mind. These days, nowhere near as much. Eating is a chore. Swallowing is an obstacle still. I'm currently living on soup and soft foods. The last supper was an all out celebration parting ways with my old tummy. I went to The French in Manchester and had their tasting menu. It was nine courses of pure edible magic. Here's the story, before and after my life changing operation.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. I haven't been around for a while.I've missed you, it's been nearly a year.I thought I'd dealt with my rock bottom and then another level came along and took me by surprise.I stopped eating and drinking for three and a half months last year. The first few weeks of that I lived on custard creams, porridge and rice cakes. I walked into my local A&E three times before I was admitted. I was kept in only after I started vomiting water. The fear and the relief were in equal measure. I had a camera sent down my throat, into my tummy to discover what was going on. The last thing I expected - Rachael, you have oesophagus cancer.Part of me was incredulous, part of me laughed at the absurdity of it all. What did descend onto my emotional health was an inexplicable peace. Here I tell my story around the physical challenges that come with oesophagus cancer and the huge relief of knowing that it was treatable. The benefits I've noticed in building a more courageous lifestyle: 1. Courage enables both bolder actions and an ability to see things for what they really are 2. Courage breeds more courage 3. The courage in you becomes a magnet 4. You get better at identifying fear's voice 5. Your yes and no become more defined 6. Your personal confidence increases exponentially 7. Have you found yourself feeling stifled or misunderstood in conversations that used to be energising and fun?Are you experiencing a lot of internal change and growth?Have you done an experiment of protecting what you let in, over creating more connection? As more of us come out of lockdown - we might begin to notice things don't flow quite the same relationally, as before. And that my friend could mean a lot of new changes are afoot.I ask some tricky and honest questions:Do you fear not being liked? What's the worst that can happen in that instance?Does the thing you're protecting outweigh the connection?Has your own growth sparked reactions in other people?Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Karen has been consistent and committed to leaning into her creative practice for over 20 years. She's a gifted artist I met at uni. Karen challenged me to keep hold of your artistic vision and integrity as a priority. We started working together and opened the door up to many creative adventures: making art in a remote Buddhist temple in rural Japan, doing sleep performances in a capsule hotel in Tokyo and getting to show our work on a school bus at Kyoto MoMA.Karen's creative courage is subtle and steady. She has expressed and drawn from research with scientists, sleep experts and academics. Producing work that is thoughtful, reflective and expressing complex ideas beautifully. Olga Thompson is better known as Big Fat Greek Mother. Her insta bio reads: Character skits, wigs and kebabs. I had the joy of finding her in lockdown - Olga's impressions, maverick characters and red lippy smile are a ray of sunshine from your phone. My guess about Olga's courage to perform wasn't quite right. Comedy and characters have been in her imagination and come naturally since being a kid. Sometimes it takes more guts to fully be yourself. Olga opens up to me about some of the fears she's conquered, why dress up should be celebrated and cracks out a range of class accents. Jess grabbed my attention on Instagram when she posted about a subject I hold dear: how to be a healthy creative. Self care and creativity go hand in hand. Like many other designers building their own companies - Jess' appreciation for this came on the tough road. She shares the reality of starting again after burnout. It wasn't easy and pretty scary taking time out to recover and figure out - what's not working for me anymore? Where are my old habits and behaviours not serving me or other people? These questions aren't easy. But what I admire about Jess, is her bravery for being prepared to go there and figure out how to move on and grow. We talk about boundaries, creating more space in life, our ego and the power we can unlock in being present in everyday things. If you've ever been tempted to operate in over work mode - Jess will convince you otherwise.Jess' Instagram: www.instagram.com/jessicaahorsfall/Keep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/jess-horsfallWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. This is the episode to listen to, if you feel trapped in a job and want to hear about creative courage paying off beautifully. Micah's story is one of guts, grit and fantasy fiction. I've been privileged to get a front row seat of his story - he's a great friend and someone that consistently encourages me to do the creative work, I find hard to reach. Micah's experienced a ton of change and challenges - from breaking out of hum-drum 9 to 5, to published author. I like to remind him he's taken on the marathon running of creativity - writing and breathing life into rich and mythic worlds that are vivid and aching to be seen on screen. Both his books took very different time frames to write - Lost Gods was 12 years in the making and Pale Kings done in 5 months. His first novel, Lost Gods, was a Brave New Words finalist, and also nominated for a British Fantasy Award. Since we recorded this episode, Micah left care work and now works full time as a writer and content creator. My observation of Micah's creative courage - it has multiplied - in his own story and for others hearing it too.Lost Gods on AmazonPale Kings on AmazonKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/micah-yongoWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Burt was hospitalised after a period in his life when he'd experienced a lot of loss and personal disappointments. His previous normal had been high capacity and making a lot of stuff happen. Burt's doctor told him he wouldn't be able to continue in any working environment that involved pressure or requiring mental stamina. That crushing knock was the start of a healing journey and internal re-wiring that led him to knowing love and acceptance in a new and powerful way. As his internal world shifted, he knew he needed to create a different way of working and new business idea. TLT (Tomorrow's Leaders in Training) was born, and within less than 12 months Burt was in conversation with the South African education department about how to deliver leadership skills into schools. Burt believes we are frequently mis-sold leadership. It's not a job title and you don't obtain it. Leadership is available to be built within anybody. It's something you can nurture and practice. He feels too many people miss out on experiencing, the gift that leadership can be.TLT now offers it's leadership training online.Wherever you are, go to tltprogram.co.za Or instagram.com/tlt_southafrica to discover more.Keep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/burt-ronaldWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Anne grew up in Dublin, with a big obsession for music. She came of age in the 90s - at the height of Britpop - all rock and roll swagger and women on MTV with guitars. She went to a school mate's party and saw a girl place a Roots Manuva record on the decks. That was the ignition she needed to think, hmm maybe I could have a go at that. Anne had already built up her vinyl collection, when she decided to invest in making her dream a reality. She purchased her first set of turntables and the classic DJ manual - 'How to DJ (properly)' by Bill Brewster. Bill is hailed as the DJs' DJ. Anne experienced her learning come full circle, getting to play at the same gig as him, before lockdown. Anne has built a varied and interesting career - she's had residencies at The Jazz Café, Spiritland and The Social. She's been booked by MGMT and Beth Ditto to do their after show parties and even graced the judging panel at The Brits. Her attitude to being creative is - hone your natural instincts and don't be a perfectionist.Discover more: djannefrankenstein.cominstagram.com/djannefrankensteinKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/anne-frankensteinWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Here's a confessional for you - I've been locked down for a number of months, wondering (amongst other things) - what makes a man courageous? Add to that too much time spent falling into a YouTube wormhole. The result? I've ended up with quite a bad Joaquin Phoenix crush. Here's some of my findings, studying a movie star who possesses a rock n roll heart and doesn't care much for fitting in.Keep being courageous,Rachael xhttps://www.calloncourage.com/podcast/what-have-i-learnt-from-my-joaquin-phoenix-crushWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. When people ask me what does your Dad do, I say he worked on cancer cures. Not exactly in a lab or near the patients. But he was the guy who made the software that analysed the data that they test the new drugs on. Did I get that right Dad? My Dad's story is one of extreme perseverance with work and turning round a tough financial situation. He barely had any work for a few years and decided to stop counting job applications after he hit 800 attempts. After that he just kept going until something changed. My Dad started over at 47, this is his understated take on what happened.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Are you interested in developing your personal brand, story or ideas on social media? Clare Hooper embodies the "just have a go!" attitude with style and creative flair. She's a natural in front of the camera and loves kick starting social media newbies' confidence. Her art teacher creds are evident. She's a coach rather than a hard to reach influencer. Lockdown 3.0 here we go.What's it like when you're trying to build a creative business and nothing much is happening?Where do you find encouragement? What validates your creativity? What makes you uncomfortable before your audience has grown or shipping plenty of orders?I say you. Ever wondered what might have happened if Emma Watson hadn't landed the role of Hermione Granger? In a parallel universe, JK Rowling had Hermione's backstory starting out in Croydon, rather than Oxfordshire.Yep. Little known fact. My sista from a different mister auditioned for Harry Potter. Hannah is someone who I've known to be consistently courageous. The audition knock back at 10 years old, set Hannah up well for choosing a fast paced career in law.In this episode we get into the tricky zone of courage in friendship and what challenges come with facing up or backing out of difficult conversations with friends.Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Alice is one of those brilliant women I bumped into at church and bonded with over music and many a night out. 10 years on I've seen her take on many challenges with her career and creativity. In this episode Alice opens up about a difficult year of unemployment. She'd been ace-ing it in a dream job and worked at a director level in an arts company. She felt the time was right to move on but things didn't quite turn out as expected.Especially when you find yourself cleaning up toenail clippings for cash in Didsbury.
