This week, Damien and Andy recorded their 500th podcast in Spiritland studios in Kings Cross. In this celebration episode they take a look back at the history of the Money to the Masses podcast and how it has evolved from those early days of recording at Andy's house, late at night trying not to wake his children. They share some happy memories and funny stories before moving onto how they see the podcast evolving in the coming years. *Message from Damien:*We hope you enjoy this slightly different episode and I want to say a huge thank you for your support and feedback over the last 11 years. Paul Noble is the Founder and Creative Director of Spiritland, a series of venues for music lovers in London and Lisbon, and also a production company. Paul joins Elliot to talk about how his experience of the Japanese Listening Bars led to him shifting careers and setting out to create a London version of this phenomenom with - as he says - 'the best sound system in the world.'
“What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back!”If you were really down with the cool kids in 1984, you would have most definitely have been passing around the school prized C90 cassettes featuring much copied Streetsounds compilations. And somewhere in there was Kurtis Blow's AJ Scratch track with those immortal sampled words from the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972. Straight out onto The BMXs and down to throw some funky worm shapes on that strip of lino!Or, in this writer's case, 1984 was mainly spent in a bedroom hovering over the play and pause button to catch a clean edit (without Simon Bates) of Two Tribes, still at number one after 5 weeks! But which mix would we get this week? Now, THIS was anticipation, pop kids!1984. A pop year of decadence, contradictions, conflict, controversy and coming of age. A year that authors (and the BBC) told us would feature impending, inevitable Armageddon. Annihilation, it turned out, came in the shape of a plethora of 12” mixes, plastic smiles, snoods, 808 drum machines, hairspray, neon and (red) balloons. How was it for you?In the third decade of the 21st century, a time surely we wouldn't (a) remember 1984 or (b) still be around to remember 1984, the team at NOW Music HQ presented the second in a (now) glorious series of curated Yearbooks. And what an album (and accompanying extra volume!) we have to rediscover. The sun is most definitely shining brighter than Doris Day!So for this special episode we're joined by two poptastic friends of the show to take a deep dive into 1984. Journalist, DJ and author Ian Wade and journalist, author and broadcaster Jude Rogers.Jude can be found contributing musings and writing about music, culture and much more in The Guardian, Observer and The Quietus amongst many others. Her first (best selling!) book, The Sound of Being Human: How Music Shapes Our Lives is available through White Rabbit books.Ian has written for Classic Pop, Record Collector, The Quietus, Official Charts, Sunday Times Culture as well as doing time at such titles as Smash Hits and The Face many years ago. He has worked as a PR on BBC's Later… with Jools Holland and occasionally DJs at Spiritland and Duckie. And his debut book 1984: The Year Pop went Queer is published by NineEight Books in July 2024.And whilst we don't take a forensic look at every one of the 80 tracks on the 1984 Yearbook (and the further 60 on the extra volume) we instead provide you with an opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, culture, music, genres, tribes and (school!) fashion that makes this year so thoroughly iconic for so many reasons.Join us then, as we turn up the neon and dance through mutually agreed destruction in celebration of 1984! The one where we trace pepper across the globe In this week's live episode, Emma and Nicole speak to writer, journalist, poet and academic, Dr Anna Sulan Masing. Her work centres around identity, race and gender and looks to decolonise the cultural spaces we live in, particularly within food. They discuss the relationship between food and searching for 'home', how identity changes when location changes, and how perceptions and stereotypes around East and Southeast Asians have changed over time. From 1983 until 1991, Glam Metal was the sound of American culture. This was the world stalked by bands like Bon Jovi, Kiss, W.A.S.P., Skid Row, Dokken, Motley Crue, Cinderella, Ratt and many more. Big hair, massive amplifiers, drugs, alcohol, piles of money and life-threatening pyrotechnics. Armed with hairspray, spandex and strangely shaped guitars, they marked the last great era of supersize bands.Where did Glam Metal come from? How did it spread? What killed it off? And why does nobody admit to having been a Glam Metaller anymore? Justin Quirk seeks to answer all those questions in “Nothin' But A Good Time”.Justin Quirk is an award-winning writer, editor and broadcaster from London. He first wrote for the Guardian's music pages when he was nineteen and began contributing to Kerrang! shortly afterwards as a reviewer. Since then he has written for everyone from Arena and Esquire to The Times, Sunday Times and the Independent about art, music and culture, regularly appears on the BBC World Service and Soho Radio, and DJs at places such as Spiritland and Merchant's Tavern in London. Another Tomorrow (www.anothertomorrow.co) is a startup that blends luxury with sustainability. It is interesting because it has digital 'baked into' the DNA - from traceability and sourcing through selling and a second life for products. The founder, Vanessa Barboni Hallik, bring a mixture of passion, flair and analytical insight to the fashion industry and has positioned Another Tomorrow at the intersection of design, sustainability and technology. Vanessa was kind enough to meet with me in her Bleeker Street store in New York, and brought the brand, its story and direction of travel to life. We recorded at 7am but the film crew and leaf-blowers were out in force as they prepared for the day's filming of the Sex and the City series reboot. It was all happening, but nothing interrupted our conversation and the team at Spiritland cleaned the audio wonderfully! This interview is full of important insights on sourcing, culture, traceability, how to grow while maintaining focus, and remaining a 'point of discovery' for your customers. Next up on our ReBirth mixtape series is a new comer making her debut appearance at Egg London this Saturday for Gold Diggers. DJ to some of London's most exclusive nights, a classically trained musician and long-time face of Soho's legendary Black Market Records, Hilit Kolet is the need-to-know artist ready to take the world by storm. Tel Aviv born but a Londoner through-and-through, Hilit has now revealed her debut production ‘Techno Disco' with house music institution Defected, a jacking, club-ready cut which is setting dancefloors alight, from an artist who defies easy classification. Growing up in a musical home with a piano teacher Mum and a jazzholic Dad meant Hilit Kolet had rhythm for breakfast and melodies for lunch and played the piano before she could tie her shoelaces. As a teenager in Israel, she began to DJ and swiftly made it onto national prime-time radio, presenting dance music shows on TV and founding & editing the local equivalent to DJ Mag. Hilit packed her bags and booked a one-way ticket to London to pursue what she calls ‘THE DREAM', the turning point in her journey as a selector. Kickstarting her career in the industry working for MTV, she then became a key staff member of iconic vinyl retailer Black Market Records, spending every moment possible soaking up the capital's unique club culture and adding every experience to her already encyclopedic knowledge of the culture. Known for her hi-octane DJ sets, Hilit's musical wonderland seamlessly drifts between the extensive and diverse districts of house, techno, disco and electronica. Securing shows at London's best venues Egg London, XOYO, Dalston Superstore & Spiritland, to name just a few, she also holds down high-profile residencies at members clubs Chiltern Firehouse and The Ned and is well versed in the UK and international festival circuits. While Hilit says London is where her heart will always remain, she has played regular shows in Berlin and toured cities across the globe. Her debut production, ‘Techno Disco', is out now on House music institution Defected and is loved and supported by the likes of Jovonn, Todd Edwards, Sam Divine, Syreeta, Harry Romero, Roger Sanchez, Heidi Lawden, John Summit, Joseph Capriati, Terry Farely, Eli Brown, Marco Faraone, Jodie Harsh, Supernova, Riva Starr, Severino, Michelle Manetti and many others; it has already reached #1 on Traxsource's House chart and #3 on Shazam's discovery chart. With quite a few exciting studio projects & collaborations in the pipeline, it marks the next phase of Hilit Kolet's illustrious, diverse career. Play it loud, ready for her set this weekend on the Middle Floor!

Anne grew up in Dublin, with a big obsession for music. She came of age in the 90s - at the height of Britpop - all rock and roll swagger and women on MTV with guitars. She went to a school mate's party and saw a girl place a Roots Manuva record on the decks. That was the ignition she needed to think, hmm maybe I could have a go at that. Anne had already built up her vinyl collection, when she decided to invest in making her dream a reality. She purchased her first set of turntables and the classic DJ manual - 'How to DJ (properly)' by Bill Brewster. Bill is hailed as the DJs' DJ. Anne experienced her learning come full circle, getting to play at the same gig as him, before lockdown. Anne has built a varied and interesting career - she's had residencies at The Jazz Café, Spiritland and The Social. She's been booked by MGMT and Beth Ditto to do their after show parties and even graced the judging panel at The Brits. Her attitude to being creative is - hone your natural instincts and don't be a perfectionist.Discover more: djannefrankenstein.cominstagram.com/djannefrankensteinKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/anne-frankensteinWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Michael Davies has cut his teeth since the tender age of 14 behind the decks, a keen turntablist from a young age he has since evolved upon a musical voyage of discovery which has led him to London in the present. As a regular at Spiritland he has showcased his keen talent behind the booth in as much as a selector as a dj. He channels a broad remit of music which spans across ambient, soul, funk, disco and beyond - wide reaching and intriguing he prefers the long haul to the short sprint, something of which we are very much a fan. We are delighted to welcome him to contribute tour our Monday series, a mixtape project which showcases the eclectic realm of dance, electronic, ambient and whatever else has taken the mood.

After earning a degree in anthropology at the University of New Mexico in 2007, he became Blue Horse's apprentice and began compiling an archive on the workings of Navajo traditional medicine. In 1968, Carlos Castaneda expanded our vision of the universe with his shamanistic journey into the ancient metaphysical knowledge of Mexico with The Teachings of Don Juan.Spiritland Spirit Land: The Peyote Diaries of Charles Langley is a spiritual successor for a new generation, detailing the contemporary journey of a British journalist, Charles, who becomes enveloped in Navajo rituals dating back to the Ice Age and the work of the powerful medicine man, Blue Horse. Segment 1: Sometimes people get on our nerves, and we just want to shoot them. That never works, because no matter what happens, people are always going to disagree with you. Sometimes, you might not even agree with yourself. It just makes it worse if you try to get someone to agree with you. There job is to live their life, not to agree with you. Variety is the spice of life. Segment 2: Charles Langley: The Medicine man has a way of communicating with spirits and finding them. Charles wrote the book, Spirit Land so he could preserve this Navajo way of life as best as he could before it goes away. Before learning these traditions, Charles new nothing about them and had no particular interest in them. Segment 3: There are different medicine men that specialize in different types of ceremonies. Deals with people who have had runs with bad luck or who have think they have been cursed. Bluehorse determined that Charles was shot by a ghost arrow. He ended up pulling the arrow out of his body and as an anthropologist, Charles knows that it is actually impossible to pull things out of people's bodies. Segment 4: Traditional mastery of fire: The medicine man would take the red hot coals and put it into his mouth, blowing it onto the patient. If it was dark in the Teepee, his entire face would just glow. Very few young people are interested in this type of medicine due to the fact that at a young adult age, we are all looking to start making money. American culture is brought up to believe that all this stuff is boloney, but then again, it keeps happening in front of everyone's eyes, over and over and over again. Here is a special edition of the Japan Sound Portrait podcast to celebrate a special week-long season on BBC Radio 3 called Night Blossoms, which will explore the mysterious, counter-cultural and unexpected side of Japanese music and arts across the station’s evening programmes, running from 21st to the 27th April. The season will start on Saturday with a special edition of Between the Ears in which Nick will explore the essay In Praise of Shadows - a classic in the field of Japanese aesthetics by Junichiro Tanizaki. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09zmqhd This podcast collects together some echoes from Japan Sound Portrait to accompany some sound-related quotes from the essay, fuller versions of which are available below. Featured music: Nick Luscombe: Monomachi Theme amoeba: Kanzeon Xap Mo Xnok Dub Nick Luscombe & Robin The Fog: Monomachi Theme Remix shinekosei: No Many thanks to the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation for supporting research into this project. Elsewhere in the Night Blossoms Season, Nick will be busy on Late Junction, with the week's programmes dedicated entirely to music from Japan, coupled with Nick's immersive recordings of the diverse and often unexpected soundscapes of Tokyo late at night. Our recent event at Spiritland will be broadcast on the Exposure programme on Thursday 26th April, and there will be special Japanese editions of all other evening programming throughout the week. ------ Sound-related extracts from Junichi Tanizaki's In Praise of Shadows: “……in a Nara or Kyoto temple…as I have said there are certain prerequisites: a degree of dimness, absolute cleanliness, and quiet so complete one can hear the hum of a mosquito. I love to listen from such a toilet to the sound of softly falling rain, especially if it is a toilet of the Kanto region, with its long, narrow windows at floor level; there one can listen with such a sense of intimacy to the raindrops falling from the eaves and the trees, seeping into the earth as they wash over the base of a stone lantern and freshen the moss about the stepping stones. And the toilet is the perfect place to listen to the chirping of insects or the song of the birds, to view the moon, or to enjoy any of those poignant moments that mark the change of the seasons. Here, I suspect, is where haiku poets over the ages have come by a great many of their ideas. “…had we invented the phonograph and the radio, how much more faithfully they would reproduce the special character of our voices and our music. Japanese music is above all a music of reticence, of atmosphere. When recorded, or amplified by a loudspeaker, the greater part of its charm is lost. In conversation, too, we prefer the soft voice, the understatement. Most important of all are the pauses. Yet the phonograph and radio render these moments of silence utterly lifeless. And so we distort the arts themselves to curry favour for them with the machines. “ “Western paper turns away the light, while our paper seems to take it in, to envelop it gently, like the soft surface of a first snowfall. It gives off no sound when it is crumpled or folded, it is quiet and pliant to the touch as the leaf of a tree.” “Whenever I sit with a bowl of soup before me, listening to the murmur that penetrates like the far-off shrill of an insect, lost in contemplation of flavours to come, I feel as if I were being drawn into a trance. The experience must be something like that of the tea master who, at the sound of the kettle, is taken from himself as if upon the sigh of the wind in the legendary pines of Onoe (Hirakawa, Aomori).” “The mysterious Orient of which Westerners speak probably refers to the uncanny silence of these dark places.” ----- Podcast image from Wikimedia Commons: ストリングのれん by Takashi Tomooka
