Merrick Watts is a comedian, radio and TV personality, actor, event and festival manager, highly certified sommelier, parent, fitness nut, SAS Australia selection-passer, entrepreneur and drink developer. And he has a jet-ski license. So if you wanted to talk to someone who can tell you exactly what it takes to balance your commitments and still go after your passions and curiosities, and to get a good dose of inspiration and wisdom while you do it, Merrick's your guy. It's exactly what he talks to Osher about in this episode, along with how to find drive, where to really place your effort, the place of sacrifice, what he hopes to instill in his children, his thoughts on service, leadership and bravery both in the media and outside of it, and how he came to launch a drink based on a 2000 year old recipe... We had a big old sip of Merrick's new health drink known as Posca and we can't wait to keep guzzling it down. Plus Merrick revealed the hilarious story of when he bought Michael Jackson's monkey live on air in the days of Merrick and Rosso and how he got in soooo much trouble from the big Nova bosses over it. Okay, I'm quietly smug here, this is Emily's first podcast interview - I've a feeling she might be doing a few in the near future. I first discovered Emily's work at my hairdressers in Manchester: Taylor Swift painted on the glass in all her glory. It grabbed my attention right-away and off I googled Lobster House Studios.Emily's story is all about leaning into your creative dreams. She had worked in schools for most of her 20s and then the pandemic hit. With a lot of time on her hands, what once was a hobby and favour for friends, ended up becoming her main job: a window artist. At the same time Emily's husband decided to crowd fund and successfully raise the cash for making maverick card games. A surprising result of lockdown that neither of them could have predicted.Emily shares with me the very cool, unexpected story of what happens when you trade your comfort for a box of Posca pens and character portraits on glass.View Emily's work in all it's gloryKeep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) It takes stamina, guts and more than a smattering of resilience. Don't panic, this isn't another podcast telling you to hustle harder. I've been there and got the burnout badge to prove it.I'm looking to find people who are doing the work they love, but it's been a bumpy ride.Starting over can be wonderful, agony and pants shakingly scary all at the same time. There are others who did it. Who are right in the centre of figuring that out. I'm trying to find the people, I needed to hear, at the time I felt I was free-falling from the loop-di-loop.BUILD A CREATIVE LIFE YOU LOVEI've found creativity + courage = the best storytellers building a life they love. The stories we tell ourselves are powerful.I'm looking to find people who are building a creative life but it's not always been easy. Call On Courage posts the conversations I was looking to find when my career dreams were sliding out of view. Your creative life is worth making happen even when doors close or you're dealing with difficult people. I'm in your corner encouraging you to keep going.I'm not all over the 'Gram or Tik Tok famous. As a teenager that culture became something she pulled away from because of its associations with a traumatic experience, the details of which her brain blocked out to protect her. Even though she was drawn to the ocean, she didn't go in, and didn't understand why.Eventually Leanne decided to try surfing just once, while on a break in Mexico. She loved it, but when she got back to her home town of San Diego those associations returned. Luckily she stumbled across a surf therapy group, Groundswell Community Project, that gave her back the joy of surfing and helped her face, navigate and integrate everything she had experienced. So what happens when a pandemic hits and you are told you can't go in the ocean? In Leanne's case a form of artistic expression is released, which completely surprised her, and she has continued to embrace and develop. How do you get your well-being fix from your creativity if it becomes your job? Joshua Heath studied photography at Art School but as a working photographer the the camera came to represent a tool of the trade rather than a form of artistic expression. A group of 200 rich Canadians, members of a group called Resource Movement, are in favour of higher wealth taxes to help reduce inequalities between the most fortunate and the rest of the population. As Covid-19 continues to ravage Canada, these rich millennials say it is urgent to tax them more. "As wealthy people, we recognise that we and our peers must step up and do our fair share," they reiterated in a press release in early November. The members of Resource Movement are calling for the creation of two new taxes. First, they want a wealth tax on the richest 10 percent of Canadians, increasing through income brackets up to a rate of 10 percent on each dollar of wealth over 20 million dollars. Second, they want the government to establish an inheritance tax for the top 10 percent of estates, increasing to a marginal rate of 55 percent on successions over 7,5 million dollars. Canada is the only G7 country without an inheritance tax. Much-needed during the pandemic Resource Movement estimates that these new measures could generate around 9 billion dollars in government income each year. They want the money to be invested in different kinds of social programs, such as affordable housing, public transport and access to dental care. "We also need to support emergency income programs. We are in a situation similar to the post-war period. We need extraordinary revenues for a fair and green economic recovery," said Jonathan McPhedran Waitzer, one of the members from the Montreal chapter. Many ultra-rich families in Canada Canada ranks in the top five countries in the world having the largest population of ultra-wealthy residents, with 11,285 people in 2019, after the United States, Japan, China and Germany, according to Wealth-X, a New-York based research firm. "As a first step, we are targeting wealth over 20 million dollars. The exorbitant lifestyle of these people will not change. Nobody should shed a tear. They don’t need that much money. If they say they do, they are lying," David Gray-Donald, Resource Movement’s cofounder, argues. Taxing the rich, an efficient measure? With the risk of tax avoidance, it is difficult to evaluate the efficiency of these proposals as a means of refilling government coffers. "It is a tool among others and, even if it might not be perfect, we cannot rule it out," argues Julia Posca, of the Institute for Socioeconomic Research and Information in Montreal. She believes in going beyond philanthropy to address the problems caused by inequality. "The goodwill of some rich individuals, who choose the causes to support, is not enough. These are decisions that must be made by the experts of a democratically elected government," Posca insists. Founded in 2015, Resource Movement has members in Montreal and Toronto and is developing chapters in Ottawa and Vancouver. "The movement is growing, especially since the pandemic started. Some people had their income cut entirely while other are still able to save money. The divide is clear," says David Gray-Donald.

This week's episode features groovy California based surf artist Drew Brophy. Drew is kind of a celebrity in my mind right along with his wife, Maria Brophy. If you don't know the Brophys then I highly encourage every single artist to click the link in the notes and buy Maria's book: Art Money Success. It's seriously a game changer and the reason why I know so much about them and their art career. Needless to say after reading her book twice, I was so excited to interview Drew and be asked to do a live Posca Paint Party this upcoming Friday! The link the link to join us in the notes and I really hope you want to hop on with us after listening to this interview and getting to know Drew a little better. He's just so cool. I think he said the word groovy at one point, or maybe it was some other surfer slang, but I was like, “that is so cute!” Haha. Times are weird and things are strange. The Corona virus is among us and we have to adjust. We are being asked to "Shelter in Place" be "Socially Distant" and Self Quarantine. For a Surfer, that may be hard...Especially when the waves are good. As more and more of California gets shut down day by day...the lingering fear that they may shut down the beach is a realistic threat. Surfers have been asked to Quarantine all around our community. I was curious how other surfers are dealing with their quarantine. Today's guest is Drew Brophy. Drew is the artist behind the Brophy Art Academy and design center. Drew is a local San Clemente artist who is a surfer, a father, a husband and all around good guy. Drew has had many contributions in the art world including bringing his original paint pen styles to surfboards around the world in the 90's and beyond. Drew and his wife Maria have been hosting these POSCA paint parties on the fast and emerging platform called ZOOM. These online parties are an absolute smash and allow multiple people from around the world to share their art and to use this precious time to be creative and calm through the process of art. We checked in with Drew to see how his Quarantine was going. He's my conversation with Mr. Drew Brophy.

Please Leave Us a Rating & Review This interview is with professional artist and big wave surfer Drew Brophy. Some magical things happened when we combined two surf artists to chat about surf, art, science, chakras, universal laws, intentional creativity and the energy in the universe...Jay and Drew got super nerdy and super gnarly in every direction. We learned about Drew's focus towards science-based art and how he got to where he is today in his ever-evolving career. Have fun with us as we ride through Drew's stories of Stand Up Paddling through the Grand Canyon and surfing waves bigger than my house. Hearing Drew's humble beginnings in South Carolina of being told he wouldn't make it as a surfer or an artist and his courageous leap into painting surfboards as a stepping stone will have your head spinning with possibilities. Caroline (@wik_coloring on Instagram), has colored in Hanna Karlzon´s books since 2015, and actually finished Daydreams some time ago. Her dream is to finish all of Hanna´s books someday, and she likes to color the pages in order. In this episode we talk about Polychromos, Neocolor and black Posca, and Caroline talks about some of her experiments in the books. And why she likes to color gold so much. (TO MY PATRONS: Just for information, this episode doesn´t have any extra-material!)
