This year I've invested in my own skills as a coach so that I can better serve my clients and the Just Start Now community. And after years of waiting for the right course to come along I chose Sas Petherick's Self-Belief Academy. Having trained April to November 2023, I wanted to share with you my biggest take-aways now I understand self-doubt and self-belief so much more and what I'll be bringing to my work and programmes going forward with this learning. In this episode I talk about: What is self-doubt? The self-doubt loop, the 7 key risks we're all trying to avoid and the 6 P's of resistance that you are more than likely falling into (for a diagram of the self-doubt loop, the 7 key risks and 6 Ps of resistance visit the show-notes page on the website) What causes self-doubt? How the course has shown me a way, even as a coach, to touch on my clients' past experiences, traumas and understandings of the world and how this impacts their beliefs and decisions going forward Meeting the protector. Reframing and building a relationship with the protective part of your mind that is not actually a horrible part of us, but in fact a loving part that is keeping you safe. How to embody self-belief. With tools like the belief buster and entering into small but powerful experiments to test out new beliefs that are more conducive with taking 'just start now' action How to deal with conflict. Whether it's potential or real, being a solopreneur means there is always risk of conflict and disagreement with others - whether in your marketing or your work itself. Courageous goal setting. How not everyone is goal driven (like me!) and the ideas and concepts I've learned that I will bring into my goal setting sessions going forward. At some point in our lives, we all experience self doubt and it shows up in different ways for everyone. That's why understanding the root cause of our own self doubt is one of the most important steps to overcoming it. My incredible guest today is Sas Petherick, a woman on a mission to help humans understand the root causes of self-doubt and cultivate tangible and sustainable self belief, self acceptance, self worth and self trust. Sas is the Founder of the Self Belief School and the Self Belief Coaching Academy, having worked with hundreds of people around the world to overcome self doubt and connect to their self belief. Sas is also the host of Courage & Spice: The podcast for humans with self doubt, where she shares evidence-based resources and original proven coaching tools to teach people how to develop robust self belief. In this episode, Sas shares the biggest game changing moment that led her to the work she's doing now. She reflects on a time in her life when her relationship with alcohol needed a shake up and how she began facing things in her life instead of running away. Sas shares some amazing insights into how self doubt shows up in our lives and what she has learned through her many years of experience. We talk about: Why we need to slow down and reflect on what we are, where we're going and what is meaningful to us. How self doubt shows up in different ways for different people. Sas shares the 4 patterns and behaviours of self doubt: overwork, overgiving, feeling overwhelmed and overthinking. Some common root causes of self belief and how the wider cultural narratives and our own “meaning making” impact our sense of self. Courage enables confidence but it will always feel awful during the process. Learn to embrace the process and don't wait to have confidence before you start doing something. Toward the end of the episode, Sas shares some tips to help you work through self doubt, particularly if you're an overworker or perfectionist. There is no quick fix to building confidence, but as you practise compassion and embrace imperfection, you will soon discover that your confidence has grown. There is so much gold in what Sas shares today. I know you're going to get so much out of this episode. Welcome to the first Conversations From The Heart: Heart Talk where I have the opportunity to have a heartfelt conversation with a wonderful guest. Conversations From The Heart: Heart Talk, begins with a body scan (you can join in too if it is safe for you to do so). The conversation is guided by whatever comes up in the moment for my guest. There are no interview questions, no set script and hardly any editing. Pauses and process time - the things that make us human are deliberately left untouched. In a fast-paced world of expeditious efficiency and trying to do things in the shortest time possible I offer an oasis. An oasis where there is no race to hot takes or intensity. Our conversations take the time they take and my guests and I have space to be our perfectly imperfect human selves. Today I am joined by my friend and resplendent human being, Sas Petherick for my first heart-led conversation. In this conversation, Sas and I talk about sisterhood, discernment and the precious care friendship and being a friend requires. We talk about the elusive nature of being present and how easily we take it for granted even though it's all we have. Sas' connection to her heart via our body scan made the preciousness of now even more apparent as she had a serious heart condition that could have had a fatal impact. Sas' tender heart reminds her of the importance of being here now and returning whenever she ventures into the past or future for too long. We talk about the enforced stillness of the pandemic and lessons thrust upon us by having to sit in our aloneness and begin to claim who we are. Sas shares why she is excited about this possibility. We also get geeky and talk about academic stuff we love! This is a really gentle conversation, I hope it offers you some comfort. A bit about Sas: Sas Petherick is obsessed with helping you heal your self-doubt. Sas is a Master Coach and Founder of Self-belief School and the Self-belief Coaching Academy where she teaches evidence-based approaches and proven coaching tools. How do we as practitioners, work with our own self-doubt? After three rounds of the Self-Belief Coaching Academy, what I know is that coaches, therapists, counsellors and mentors experience a lot of Very Understandable self-doubt. We are always learning the craft of coaching while building a business - these are bot complex tasks and most of us feel like we are constantly on our 'growth edge'.And it doesn't matter how experienced you are - self-doubt will show up when we are taking any kind of psychological risk. If there is a chance of disappointment, judgement and failure - self-doubt will try to hold us back to protect us.The best coaches I know - those who have built a successful-on-their-terms practice, who are in demand, who love their work years and years into it - all share a commitment to their own growth and development.Brave Coaches Week is a framework I've developed - especially for coaches - to get you unstuck from self-doubt. If self-doubt is holding you back, over one week we will go through a process to help you take meaningful action in your practice. So what's this episode really about? What Brave Coach Week is and how you can join us. Why it matters so much for building a sustainable practice, that we work with our own self-doubt. How healing our self-doubt as practitioners, is deeply connected to our ability to hold a safe and brave space for our clients. Why you should listenWherever your self-doubt shows up in your business or in your client work, it's worthy of your attention. It doesn't mean anything has gone wrong: this is where you get to do the work of your work. This means we can show up to our business, our clients with loving detachment - it's how we are able to have the most effective and positive impact. This is brave and important work. To explore your self-doubt more, join me for Brave Coaches Week!Links: Brave Coaches Week starts Monday 21st March. We've just opened enrollment for Self-Belief Coaching Academy Spring 2022 class! You can quote me on that!“When you start working, everybody is in your studio…the past, your friends, enemies…and above all, your own ideas all are there. But as you continue…they start leaving, one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then, if you're lucky, even you leave.” -Philip Guston"Our unconscious expectations - our entanglements - with our clients, are invitations to experience being on our growth edge .” - Sas Petherick"One of the most important questions you can ask yourself: is this a protective belief or is this a business problem? As we come to the end of 2021, we have almost 150 thousand families in the UK grieving the loss of loved ones from Covid19, about 1 in 4 people are looking to change their job in the next 12 months and divorces and separations have massively increased over this pandemic period.I know for many of us there is grief, loss and endings in many shapes and forms. It doesn't seem to matter if endings are ambiguous or even chosen, loss is HARD! So it's no wonder we resist endings, we just aren't very good at them. In this episode I really dive deep into the different types of grief and why every type is valid, I hope you can take comfort in my words as we share in this as a collective. So what's this episode really about? Why we find grief, loss and endings so damn HARD! Grief exists on a massive spectrum, it's not just about the loss of a loved one - all grief is legitimate and I talk about all the different types of grief and why they all matter. The sense of grieving, even when we are not directly impacted (and I talk about my own families loss in this area.)I discuss the emotional symptoms that come with grief, including the ones that surprise us. How grief can help us move on with our lives and ultimately make us better people. I go through 5 different ways of doing endings and grieving well from a healthy adult self. Why you should listenGrief, loss and endings are everywhere at the moment and it this episode I'll talk more about how we can manage these feelings. I really hope this episode helps you feel more supported and less alone. If like me, you've had endings that haven't been acknowledged growing up, this is the episode for you. If you loose something that's important to you, it's super natural to experience grief.” - Sas Petherick. “There is no one correct way to experience grief, but you can expect that your grief will change and evolve as you do.” - Sas Petherick“Every transition ends with a new beginning.” William BridgesLike what you hear? Dr Suzy Darke is a business coach like no other! I see her growing a quiet rebellion, inviting us to challenge the kinds of practices we all take for granted as business owners. Suzy is a coach, a mentor, a writer and she's also a graduate of the Self-Belief Coaching Academy! Having spent six months in her company I've found her to be deeply empathic, she has an enormous heart, but she also has a really big impact. I'm sure you will really enjoy our conversation. So what's this episode really about?Starting your own business is such a huge personal development journey, you don't have to be louder, more extrovert, tougher. You are your own start line and you get to start from that space. Starting from a place of safety is so important. The push-pull between the ethics of marketing yourself with integrity and how does this fit with us as human beings. You don't have to fit the mould of “girl boss” to get on in business and there's never really a secret formula that works. You have to decide what is right for you.The steps you need to come back to your own heart and start to have some belief in yourself and your business. What you should stop doing - to make positive change in your life and business. (clue: this is all about comparison!)Why you should listen:Being more compassionate to yourself does not mean that you get less done. Perfectionism is a protective belief that if you were perfect you will be safe. That's the bottom line. It can be any area of your life. It is also one of the most subtle and sophisticated forms of self-doubt. In this episode, we are going to talk about what perfectionism actually is in relation to self-doubt, but also a little bit about how this shows up for you, particularly in that protective self-doubt, the way we try to keep ourselves safe and hold ourselves back. I'm also going to talk about what it means to let go of perfectionism, kinda juicy don't you think? So what's this episode really about? What are these sneaky protective perfectionist beliefs and how do you know you have them? How staying in possibility protects us from success. The cycle feeds the self-doubt stories we tell ourselves. How perfectionism shows up in four different forms of protection. Why you should listen This episode is especially for those who identify with being a perfectionist, but it's also for those of you who seem pretty ok with your perfectionist tendencies! And if you are a fellow practitioner – I invite you to noodle on what it means to you to be ‘a good coach' and just see what pops up that might be related to perfectionism – about who you have to be, what you are not allowed to feel, what is required of you on social media, from clients, how much income you should be making, the qualifications and training you need. There is no formula or secret to business, don't chase the secret, it's a waste of time!Implement a strategy, focus on your marketing, honour your mindset. that is the key to running a successful business. Taking the driving seat as the CEO - owning what you do and how you do it as a business owner. Why you should listen. Letting go of what you think you should be doing in your business, what was expected of you growing up and instead go with what your heart and gut tell you - then making things happen from that place. Links:Follow Ellie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elliehswift/You can quote me on that:" I wish women understood just how powerful they are when they connect back to themselves and their self-belief." - Ellie Swift" There has to be value in what you do, people need to want to walk with you. We get so used to 'polishing the turd' we forget what is the unique reason and way we are doing this thing." - Sas Petherick. Like what you hear? Why not help me reach more ears (and give my self-belief a boost) with a 5-star rating?

As a Master Coach and founder of the Self Belief Coaching Academy, Sas works with her clients to move from understanding root causes of self doubt to cultivating tangible, sustainable self belief, self acceptance, self worth and self trust. This episode is a beautifully rich discussion as we talk about Sas’ business and the transformation she’s seen over the past 12 months, in particular her $110k launch. We unpack so much value surrounding mindset, self belief and marketing as Sas talks about the importance of being honest with yourself, knowing when you’re playing small and recognising the value of your work. We talk about Sas’ launch, how it was the culmination of all the small conversations, messages and social media posts throughout the year. Sas talks about her take on marketing and growing her following and the magic of being surrounded by a supportive community of coaches. She is a total boss mistress at this and we all benefit from her being so. Sas shares with us today her own journey with self-doubt, ways we can gently and compassionately overcome it and see it as a portal for our own spiritual awakenings and journeys.

For the last two years Helen Perry has steadily created her own colourful corner of the internet. Previously a BBC journalist, she started her instagram account (@notaboutthekids) to help transition from the role of full-time mum back into work after a break of eight years. This space began. as the name suggests, with a conscious decision that it would not be about her role as a mother. Instead she wanted to explore her love of photography and chatting to other like-minded women; all of which has enabled her to build an incredible community around her account. Now Helen teaches others about social media, works with small businesses, writes and organises social marketing events. What we talked about: Lack of enough voices out there of women in the 40+ age bracket - "There seems to be this vanishing point that happens after you have kids." Still being ambitious in your 40s and having things you'd like to achieve The impact of time out of the workforce on your sense of self-worth Stepping away from things that were keeping her busy, but weren't satisfying her ambitions or creative drive How career coaching helped her unpick what she really wanted to pursue and recognise the skills that she has Why she feels the most importance step is to just start doing something; because until you do you won't get any closer to where you want to be The benefits of investing in yourself and going to in-person workshops as a way of meeting like-minded people and creating a network Embracing the mistakes and learning from them. We’ve inherited stories that contain low expectations around our bodies and selves. In this episode, Sas Petherick shares: How practically dying gave her more trust in her body How our unconscious stories make us think “this is who I am” and sabotages sustainable change The freedom, creativity, and results inherent when we rewrite our stories. "I always say to clients, don't share anything publicly that you haven't already processed yourself. And you'll know that you've processed it because you will be unattached to how it's received by people. Whatever anyone says won't really bother you, or whoever reads it won't bother you -- then that's a good sign that it's safe for you to share it." This week is the last episode of Season 1 and my guest is a researcher, coach and podcaster who helps humans transcend self-doubt. Sas Petherick has a degree in Educational Psychology, is qualified with the Coaches Training Institute and has a Masters in Coaching & Mentoring alongside a multitude of other academic qualifications. Sas developed an interest in researching self-doubt and now through her work, she helps women like you and me understand how to stop our self-doubt holding us back and instead cultivate self-belief, self-acceptance, self-trust and self-worth. If there's one thing I've learned about running your own business it's that it brings all of your doubts and issues right to the surface. Which is why I wanted to talk to Sas Petherick - a self-doubt coach and researcher - all about this, and whether self-doubt is more common for those of us who run our own businesses. "We as self-employed business owners get to decide ‘where do I want to show up for my business?' ‘Where do I want to lead?'"- Sas Petherick
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about running your own business it’s that it brings all of your doubts and issues right to the surface. And the topic has come up in a huge number of the interviews I’ve done for this podcast so far. Which is why I wanted to talk to Sas Petherick - a self-doubt coach and researcher - all about this, and whether self-doubt is more common for those of us who run our own businesses. "We as self-employed business owners get to decide ‘where do I want to show up for my business?’ ‘Where do I want to lead?’"- Sas Petherick Sas’s journey to coaching from the corporate world to academic research and working with people one-to-one and in courses Specific ways in which self-doubt shows up for business owners (and probably affects almost everyone else too) Why we believe we don’t fit the mould for leadership, and how we can redefine that for our businesses Stopping one area of self-doubt from making us feel terrible about our entire businesses An example of self-doubt from Sas’ own business Recognising the patterns of self-doubt when we start something new or different How Sas came up with her self-doubt archetypes and the work that was involved in bringing it to life Creating a quiz from the archetypes and the results she has seen for her mailing list after turning this into a "nice" funnel The importance of having a team to make things like the archetypes quiz happen For episode show notes & links, head to https://ruthpoundwhite.com/podcast/
On the 20th of December 2018, my heart stopped working. I collapsed on the kitchen floor. 36 hours later, I was having emergency surgery to repair my heart which was completely blocked. I want to reassure you that as I record this episode almost three months later, I feel very very well. I know for a lot of us navigating through self-doubt, its the things we are fearful of - the thing we are most afraid of happening - that our self-doubt is trying to protect us from. We often work really hard to avoid our fears at all costs. But I have learnt that fear is a curious beast when it is the only natural emotion to feel. I wanted to talk to you about what I learnt in those 36 hours, mostly about the nature of fear. And how I am making sense of it all now.
Sas Petherick knows pretty much all there is to know when it comes to self-doubt. It’s something that raises it’s head relentlessly when you’re building a business. In this episode Sas and I chat about self-doubt, what it is, how it shows up and how you can start to get it under control so that to stops holding you back from getting your magic out there into the world. It's the 100th episode of Reframe Your Life. Thank you for being here for this journey. If you have ever wanted to start something, change something, try something new or quit something - you know how quickly you can begin to experience self-doubt. It is not a limitation though. Reframe your self-doubt with Sas Petherick.
Sas Petherick is a self-doubt researcher, coach and podcaster who helps thinking humans transcend self-doubt. Sas helps you connect the dots between the root causes of your self-doubt, and tangible self-belief. During today's conversation, Sas lovingly talks to us about the freedom that comes from taking responsibility for our lives, living with greater intention, and rolling our sleeves up to take action on the things we want to do most. There is a reason Sas is such a phenomenal self-doubt teacher. Her words are deeply encouraging and I have no doubt they will inspire everyone who tunes in to show up for themselves today with a greater sense of her patented rock solid resolve and a well-defined sense of humor. It's a bit of a different one today as Sas inadvertently gives me an hour of therapy! If you don't know Sas, she is one of the most awesome humans around. I discovered her through Sara Tasker's podcast, Hashtag Authentic and quickly became enamored with her dulcet Kiwi tones and awesome podcast Courage and Spice. She's a self-doubt expert, coach, and mentor for women who want to transcend their self-doubt and cultivate self-belief instead. I can't emphasise enough how incredibly empowering Sas is and tell you gently that you NEED her in your life. I went on one of Sas' retreats Write Yourself Home and it was a real turning point for me in my self-doubt journey. So, in this episode, we discuss something that I'm more than a little preoccupied with - feedback. Good, bad......we are all bombarded with it and especially so when you've chosen a life and career online. If you need to hear an episode that will make you feel everything's okay, this one is for you. In fact, whoever you are and whatever you need - this one's for you! There Are Other Ways: Conversations About Living Life a Little Differently
This week I'm chatting to Sas Petherick, a coach and mentor who helps people transcend self-doubt through workshops, group programmes and one-on-one coaching. We had a really rewarding conversation about why we all suffer from self-doubt, its link to creativity and connection, and why HMRC should issue capes to everyone who is self-employed!
Comparion is known as the 'thief of joy' but I wanted to know more about what comparison actually is, if it has a purpose, what we can learn from it, and how we can get ourselves out of the ICK it creates. So I read loads of original research about comparison and came up with a roadmap for escaping the comparison trap. Enjoy!
Hashtag Authentic - for small businesses, bloggers and online creatives
Sas Petherick is a coach specialising in helping women overcome self doubt and find their self belief. She is someone who has taught me huge amounts, both personally and professionally, and before we'd even finished recording our episode together in Season 1 I knew I needed to bring her back for another this time around. I called her up to talk about an issue that I suspect is close to lots of our hearts - that worry about what other people will think of us. I was hoping to get Sas to cure me of this altogether, but her answers to the problem are not quite what you might expect...
Hashtag Authentic - for small businesses, bloggers and online creatives
Sas Petherick is a UK-based coach who specialises in helping women experiencing self doubt. I first met her through Instagram a year ago, and was struck by how much insight and wisdom she could drop into the most incidental moments of casual conversation. She also makes me laugh until it hurts. For anyone who's ever felt like an imposter in their own career, or like their self doubt is holding them back in life, this episode is essential listening. I think you're going to love it.
Sas Petherick is a big-hearted, cognitive coach for real women. She shows women how to experience a life of love, meaning, and joy by thinking on purpose. Sas is an in-demand certified coach, the creator of Rethink Group Coaching programs, and co-host of “The Heart and Hearth Circle.” Sas’ energy, smarts, humour and intuition guide every transformational coaching session and sold out retreat. Find out how to amplify your life with curiosity and kindness here. Sas believes that being childfree was a conscious, personal choice. It’s mostly because she felt ambivalent and never had that ‘pull’ to have a child. It has taken a number of years to come to a conclusive place with the decision. She is very happy to be childless although it’s taken time to get to that place. Sas got divorced at 32 and felt like that part of her life was over. Many people said to her that once she met the right person then she wouldn’t hesitate. She later met Ash, her husband when she was 35, and they had an intimate conversation on their second date about having children. She informed him that it wasn’t something she had in mind and asked him if he was okay with that. It was a very important conversation to have and was their first personal discussion. They then got married and discussed the concept of having children for many years. They’ve been together for more than 7 years and still wonder from time to time if they’ve made the right decision. Fortunately, Sas and her husband continue to believe they have made the right choice. She came to the conclusion that once you meet the right person, you’ll make the right choice (whatever that may be). When you are not 100% certain of your own position and are still deciding, for someone to then question what you’re not certain about, can make you feel vulnerable and exposed. That can be a challenging place to be in. It can be uncomfortable when we feel we have to defend ourselves. It’s important to realise that it’s okay to be in the uncertainty…live the life that you want to live. Did you feel influence from your family or friends that made that made it more difficult? Or were they understanding about your decision? In the past, most of the friendships that Sas developed were through work or travel. She found that she needed to be mindful of who she chose to reveal that vulnerability to. It’s about being respectful of the people we talk to about this. Her mother passed away about a decade ago. She was a psychiatric nurse who worked with women who suffered from post-natal depression. She was a brilliant example to Sas of a woman who was nurturing and mothering. Sas believes that more and more women are deciding that motherhood is not the right choice for them and because of that, can be easier to find people who share your same views and position. What are your thoughts about the question, “Who’s going to look after you when you’re older?” “My standard comeback is about the beautiful Spanish male nurse that I hire.” (Me too please!) Sas says that she has a pact with a few of her close friends that they’ll pitch in and buy a house together and hire some hot Spanish nurses. As we are an increasingly ageing population, it will be more of a reality of friends getting together and living with each other when they’re older. The exciting thing for women who are not going to have children is that you’ve got thirty or forty years ahead of you where you could whole-heartedly focus on something meaningful and fulfilling. One of the key reasons for making the choice to be childless was: The immense freedom with opportunities and possibilities in her future. A common question is: “What does your life mean if you don’t have children?” It can be confronting but you can reveal to yourself a lot of interesting, exciting, and not of the “norm” answers for yourself. For Sas, it was about trusting her intuition and trusting her inner voice. That possibility and freedom feels very exciting to her. Do you have advice for somebody who is struggling with how to respond to people questioning them about being childless? Sas believes that if you are in a place of not knowing what the answer is and people are questioning you, saying, “I don’t know yet” is perfect. “Thank you for your interest, I really don’t know yet” is also a reasonable response. It’s really about letting other peoples’ voices wash over you. This is true for anyone else’s opinion about anything in your life. What would you like to leave as your legacy or message of the values that are important to you? A statement that Sas read a while ago that really stuck out to her was, “A hundred years after you die, no one will speak of your name.” That idea filled her with such relief that she can just live the life she wants to live without anyone having to judge her about it. Sas says don’t live your life worrying about what other people will think of you. Freedom is a huge benefit that you experience without having children. For Sas, it gives her intellectual freedom, financial freedom, and spiritual freedom. Without children, she doesn’t have anyone dependent on her, which gives her the space and freedom to play, create, and do what she wants to do.
