Josey Wales (his nickname that was affectionately bestowed upon him by the 6666s cowboys) came to the US for the first time in 2017. Ever since he was young, Josey wanted to be a cowboy. However, he was not born in the heart of Texas, rather the rural hills of Wales. After graduating from university, Josey decided to pursue his boyhood dream of cowboying and went to Texas. This led him to the 6666s ranch of all places where he would meet cowboys such as former guest, Dusty Burson, and cowboy legend, Boots O'Neal. Though the road wasn't easy and the learning curve was steep, Josey continues to pursue the craft of cowboying today. Join Ben and Joe as they sit down with Josey to discuss this tale of determination, toughness and a man who is turning himself into a true Texas cowboy, despite the odds.

Paula Vaccaro, an award-winning producer and screenwriter, takes us on her journey from growing up in Argentina to establishing her own production company in the UK (Pinball London). Although an Italian family migrating to Argentina is not unusual, the story behind how Paula's family came to be there is a very interesting one. Paula's work ethic meant that by the time she was in her mid-twenties, she had already become a successful journalist and broadcaster. Longing to spread her wings, we learn what it was that brought Paula to Europe and the lessons she learnt along the way. "Things became super different. Going out for lunches and dinners became a luxury. I would never forget waiting for public transport and having my feet soaking wet and being cold - extremely cold - like I've never imagined one could be. So, London was a full-on reckoning. And yet, I fell madly in love with the place."We hear what it takes to be successful in the media industry and what advice Paula has for anyone wishing to set-up their own production company.

#WeGotGoals
How Caullen Hudson is Making Change in Chicago Through Fitness and his Company SoapBox Productions

#WeGotGoals

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 11, 2018 38:11

Caullen Hudson is always seeking to inspire - it's just a little different from place to place. In the gym, he's encouraging fitness enthusiasts and flipping tires. Outside of the gym at the company where he's Founder and Executive Producer - SoapBox Productions - he's encouraging youth and flipping aldermen. On this week's episode of #WeGotGoals, Hudson talks about the intersection of wellness, race, and media. His spot on the Venn diagram is right where those worlds intersect and he uses his spot to spread ideas and encourage action. In naming and branding his company, the soapbox sends a pretty clear message about what he and his business partner David A. Moran are creating. SoapBox Productions creates media - or micro-docs, as the teams calls them - to spread an idea and encourage incremental change. It all started with a documentary that Hudson produced as a Film Student at DePaul University when he studied and documented the parallels between drill rap and activism in Chicago. That project - Chi DNA - continues to live on as a multi-media project from film to editorial to a web presence. And if you're wondering what "drill rap" is, it's a form of rap that's steeped in Chicago's south side and often includes themes of violence and gang references - Chief Keef is widely associated with popularizing this form of hip-hop. Also discovered at DePaul - his love for fitness. It all started when a friend asked him to take on Shaun T.'s Insanity workouts. When he did, he fell for the kind of cardio that comes with bodyweight workouts, high knees and burpees. And as soon as he saw that DePaul was auditioning new fitness instructors for a bodyweight-specific fitness class, he took it as a sign. As those two vocations grew in parallel, Hudson saw opportunities to fight against racism, fascism and sexism in big and small ways. Inside the gym, it's as simple as renaming an exercise "person-maker" instead of "man-maker." As a producer and community organizer, he's supporting high school aged students in West Garfield Park who are organizing to fight against the erection of a Police Academy. Throughout this week's #WeGotGoals episode, you'll hear Hudson reference the project, #NoCopAcademy. To fully understand it, spend 3.5 minutes on this video. If you were moved by that short video, it's on purpose Hudson said. The arts help people understand larger social issues. “They may not read a research paper, but they’re going to watch a documentary that will help them understand,” he said.   You can listen to #WeGotGoals anywhere you get your podcasts — including Spotify! If you like what you hear, please leave us a rating and a review. Make sure to listen all the way through, because at the end, we heard from a real-life goal-getter just like you. Fresh off a huge 16 day shoot, I chat with filmmaker Tony Franklin. He started as an art director, working for Target's in-house creative department. He has quickly and successfully transitioned into a full-time commercial filmmaker, and luckily for us, Tony shares his journey with us. We chat about when to sign and why not to sign with a commercial production company, as well as how to measure if you and the company are a good fit. We also discuss craft, and how he gets natural performances out of non-actors. We're like minded, as we both always want to get a new spot for the reel. Enjoy a Tony Franklin spot, his director's cut for Academy Sports, at his site or at jordanbrady.com. My next Commercial Directing Bootcamp will be in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 - so sign up. Read the reviews on this site. Pretty flattering. #blush. Get the "Maserati of iPhone Cases" called IOMCases. Buy one. Super cool, stainless steel. And I'm offering all currently enrolled Film Students and those in Ad School a whopping $75 Student Discount on my Bootcamp. thanks, Jordan This episode is 90 minutes, give or take, of our chat. Editor Rob Watzke has cut many of your favorite tv spots over the years, but on nights and weekends, he teaches improvisation. We saw his show the night Helen Hunt played along with Rob and his troupe. The 100% riffed show was amazing. Back in the editing bay, Rob deftly cuts on any tool invented, and works with his agency clients to bring out the best in the footage. We chat improvisation, editing and discuss the birth of the Frankensteinization of multiple versions of edits in one cut. Is it really better? You'll enjoy this episode. Admittedly, I babbled too much. Two cool things: my pal launch the Maserati of iPhone Cases" called IOM Cases. Buy one. Super cool, stainless steel. Special thanks to Taylor Higgins (@TaylorHiggs) for our logo!  Episode 15 of the Is This a Thing? Podcast!"Operation Slap 'n Tickle"Starring: Marc, Akshat, and DanPotential Things this week:  Movie Trailers: Sure this is a nuanced topic. But you know how we can solve it? By relying on our nation's true warriors. The ones that lead us out of darkness. The brave souls who show us the true way to freedom. We speak of the Film Students.  Supporting Things: Listen to us weave a web of cynicism that is both useless, and baseless. Also, nothing matters and everything is terrible. Taxis: The best thing to come out of the demise of taxis and the rise of Uber and other unmarked taxi services, is the occasionally experiencing the first half of getting carjacked by drunk people.  It's Episode 15 of the Is This A Thing Podcast! This week, we discuss whether movie trailers are a thing. It's a heated discussion, touching on Proust. Seriously, Proust. No, for real go listen, we talk about Proust. We then move on to supporting things with money. Have you ever wanted to heard Dan accosted for his beliefs by two belligerent, sad and cynical people? Well want no longer you can hear it all in this episode. Finally, we discuss taxis,  which we (along with the rest of the world) have nothing but contempt for. Instead, we all like Uber, especially when people assume you are their uber ride, and accost you, and you pretend to put on a brave face and drive away, and then cry a little and call your mother. It's a week of fun! A week of mystery! A week of praising Film Students! Hey come on, be nice. They need a break from bringing people coffee and making a frame with their fingers and looking through it all the time. "Roger Mr. President. Operation Clown Farts is go. Godspeed men."   Special thanks to Fletcher Magellan for our new theme song, "Oh, No!" off his upcoming album. Listen to it, and other singles like it on his Soundcloud.

If wondering how to introduce yourself at the Aberdeen Actors and Directors networking event is holding you back from attending, then try Jenni Wright's approach: just get off your bum and do it! I was speaking to someone in the downstairs bar at the Belmont, when she strode up and stood there...beside us...waiting. In my experience, that's the best way to do it. She's got interesting things to say about the difference between the acting/filmmaking scenes in Glasgow and Aberdeen, eg. groups don't seem to mix so much here in the North East. I think most people would agree that's true - never mind the reason why. That's why Kim Temnpleton and Jamie Rodden's monthly networking event is important. Thanks, Jenni.
