Terminal Illness is a horrible thing to be dealt with in life and it is also difficult on the family. Between stress, frustrating communication, negative energy and not knowing what to do about the terminal illness, family members can enter a very dark time in their lifes. Fortunately, there is a better way to process this information. By staying on the path (as @JockoWillink talks about in his podcasts) you can train your mind and body to better cope, learn and cherish the time spent with your terminally ill loved one(s). By educating yourself on the specific terminal illness, you become better equipped with what to expect from your family member suffering from their illness and how to prevent it from happening to you. By reframing how you communicate with your ill family member, you can work around the frustrations you might have and unlock new ways to communicate. We all see those photos of people on social media with their smiling faces on a tropical beach somewhere and we question ourselves if we have made some wrong moves in our life's. We feel our struggles are only what a select small few endure while everyone else appears to be so happy. The reality is, this is far from the truth. We all struggle, we all suffer in this world yet we don't hear about it. People suffer in silence. And this only makes matters worst. In this revealing episode I get vulnerable. Stories stick. Weather someone shares their stories of their failures, or of their successes these are lessons that have stuck with me. I've learned so much from some of my favorite podcast hosts on how they answer leadership style questions via their examples and stories. With the countless example responses I've heard over the years that might pop up on a typical interview along with the research I've done, in this episode I share with you my stories of my career in the form of a mock interview. I provide my example responses to all the typical questions that would most likely show up on your next interview. I'm hoping that through the power of my examples and stories, that this episode could help level up your interviewing ability. However, to get good at interviewing it requires more than just listening to a podcast or two. It requires continuous research, practice and learning from your failures. Most of my answers are deeply rooted in the many leadership books and podcasts I've listened to over the years and they serve as the backbone to many of my answers. I wish you the best of luck in your future interview endeavors. I must give kudos (and there are plenty others not mentioned) to some of those sources that have helped provide good leadership tactics for me in one way or another: Books: • Extreme Ownership (written by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin) • The Dichotomy of Leadership (written by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin) • What Great Bosses Know (written by Jill Gisler) Podcasts: • Jocko Podcast • What Great Bosses Know • 7 Minute Leadership Podcast • The Tim Ferriss Show • The Up and Comers Show Time Start Agenda 0:00:53 - Intro 0:07:17 - What this podcast is about 0:10:34 - Q1- Why do you want this job 0:16:10 - Q2- What is your leadership style 0:21:33 - Q3- What are your strengths 0:33:14 - Q4- Tell us about a mistake you made and how you handled it 0:35:34 - Q5- Tell us how you handle difficult employees 0:39:51 - Q6- Your boss asks you to do something you disagree with, how do you respond 0:44:11 - Q7- What are your weaknesses 0:48:57 - Conclusion --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
The reality is most bosses are looking for a particular set of skills and characteristics in the candidate they select for the position at their company, and if someone doesn't discover these advantages they may get out matched by a candidate that they simply should have beat. Too often people think that an interview is just about what you can do the week or two leading up to it. Which is important and we talk about that in this episode, but we also talk about the long game on what you should do months or even years out to help you be the best fit candidate for that future promotion opportunity. With my tireless efforts to research and get educated on this topic and my brother Tommy Lake's experience being on the judges' side of table for countless amounts interviews, we unpack what is known as the selection criteria in this episode. One could imagine each element of this criteria as a symbolic piece of the pie and the more you contribute to the pie as a whole the more likely you'll land that next job. Tommy and I get flowing on this informative topic. Whether you're trying to level up your interviewing skills as a candidate, you want the knowledge on how to pick the best candidate as a judge or you just want to hear some good leadership advice as someone trying to level up their leadership abilities, this episode has no shortage of engaging topics and applicable skills to help you dominate your life. Part-2 of this interviewing series will be on interview responses in a mock interview I plan to present on. Candidate Selection Criteria website link: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/how-does-an-employer-decide-who-to-hire-2062876 Specific questions we talk about: • Would the individual fit in with the colleagues in their department? • Does the finalist have an appealing personality? Loading nuclear weapons onto bombers, installing top secret Gatling Guns onto fighter jets, tracking down world renown scientists and convincing them to work at the Nevada Test Site, coordinating with the base commander about international spies, staffing the world's largest weapons incinerator and diving into deep underground cavernous drinking water reservoirs for inspections; these were all tasks of a typical days work for my father law-in David Stoeckle. In this episode, I interview David about his career with the government. Early in his career, he was a Air National Guard Sergeant where he worked inside “Bomb dumps” to install weapons onto aircraft before they took off to run missions. After his stent there, he became a HR specialist at the Nevada Test Site where he was responsible for recruiting and employing speciality scientists to work for the nuclear weapons research program. At the pinnacle of his career, he managed to reunite the top scientists from the World War II Manhattan Project to implement a nuclear weapons testing revamping program. After successfully executing this task, the Admiral awarded him with the “Award of Excellence for significant contribution to the Nuclear Weapons Program.” David then took his career to the military inhabited Johnston Atoll Island. With the worlds largest weapons incinerator complex at this island, he coordinated personal staffing to help keep the denuclearization of many of the world's nuclear arsenals on track. He also took his passion of scuba diving to work and he dove into fresh water distribution lines and reservoirs for inspections for the Las Vegas Water District. We also get to hear David's thoughts on the COVID pandemic, his skydiving adventure for his 70th birthday, and what he knows to be true in life. It doesn't get much better than this for exciting stories, detailed insights about top secret military research/weapons and some inspiring ways to live by. I really hope you enjoy this episode. With the COVID pandemic taking place, the number of people who are depressed and anxious has skyrocketed. Heightened levels of unchecked stress is typically the culprit. Most people might know of 2 to 3 measures of how to reduce stress, but if they were honest they probably don't even tap into those skills due to their lack of motivation and education. This episode is packed with plenty of stories, references, and guidance for those who need a little boost of inspiration. I felt a need to research, read books and listen to podcasts on how people can effectively reduce stress. With meditation being one of the many tactics you can use to reduce stress, I picked my friend Jessica Gearhart who has a real passion for deepening her understanding of meditation to help me cohost this episode. She helps me tackle these topics on stress and how to better cope with it. We talk about: how stress plays out in people's lives, how to recognize when stress is reaching heightened levels, and how to mitigate stress with various practices (meditation/yoga/exercising/etc.). If you are searching for ways to become a better person, parent, spouse, and coworker then this podcast is definitely for you. Lets face it, people want to be around others who are calm and in the moment, not with people who are stressed out. Also we get to know Jessica at an in-depth level in the interview portion of this episode. She talks about her childhood and how that helped shape her into who she is now. We talk about about how: traveling can enrich your understanding of how to view things differently, how the COVID pandemic has impacted her life in both positive and negative ways, and her truths/fears of life. The synergy Jessica and I have together is very apparent making this a fun and engaging episode. Be sure to listen to our meditation portion in this episode, we both explore this topic at great depths. I pick his brain in a Q&A session where we get: revealing facts on what helped him propel through the ranks at Panasonic, raising his two kids, dealing with the COVID pandemic, staying motivated and reminiscing on our childhood memories growing up in South Lake Tahoe California. Additionally, he helps me cohost topics in EXTREME OWNERSHIP. We dive into all the good details of this book for this part 1 of 2 podcast series. In the book, both authors were former NAVY SEALs who learned leadership tactics throughout their careers and they write about how to lead and win. This podcast covers topics: Extreme Ownership, Cover and Move, Check your Ego, and Simple. We dive deep into our experiences as supervisors, leaders and fathers to help unpack these topics. I hope our stories help motivate you and that you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as we did recording it! Most people are terrified of public speaking. With the fear, anxiety, and stress this may bring, many people just avoid it as best they can. However, they are surrendering some huge benefits in their life's by doing so. Becoming a confident public speaker goes far beyond just having a presentation that people give a meaningful applause to at the end; it can help you have a stronger interview, it can help you become a more inspiring coach, it can help you become a more engaging teacher, it can help you tell more interesting stories, and the list goes on. This is a powerful podcast where I dive into the highlights of the book Talk Like TED, written by Carmine Gallo. From his book, I talk about how to unleash the master within, effective story telling, and how to turn your presentation into more of a conversation. Additionally, I talk about posture and how to appear clam and steady when you're presenting. And finally, I dive into my experiences of the many presentations and meetings I have hosted. In particular, I mention how practice, education, and leading the audience will help you become a more confident presenter. This is a topic I'm truly passionate about, I really hope you learn a lot from this podcast and you enjoy it! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Over the last 3 months, I've been doing an occasional journal entry on the impacts this COVID pandemic has had in my life. Let this podcast serve as a time capsule to remember this unique experience now or in the future to come. I realize that we many not share the same exact experiences but I feel there is a lot of content I talk about that you can hopefully relate to. I dive into my highs, my lows, my unique encounters, my humor, my family life and my work life while enduring this COVID pandemic experience. And as always, I pick apart what lessons you can learn from my discoveries, how you can apply them to your life and what you can do to level up those skills. I was tired of getting bad sleep and waking up 6-8 times a night so I decided to do some research on it. I've applied these 3 simple things each day and it's made a huge difference to my sleep. I also dive into the details of why we need sleep and the benefits of it. And don't accept the false reality that your sleep gets worst as you get older. Yes, your body does get stiffer, and your stresses might accrue quicker as you get older from taking on more responsibilities, but that just means you have to work a little harder to get your body back to that relax mode (physically & mentally) as you once had consistently as a kid. It's time to get up and do something about it. Lastly, 3 additional minor things you can do (not mentioned in the podcast) for better sleep: drink half your body weight of water in oz each day, sleep in a cool house that's around 65-70 degrees, and try to make a routine out of a 14 hour fast (no eating) after your last bite of dinner. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

If you are crunched for time from a busy schedule with your kids/ work/ life; or if you have good intentions of trying to exercise, meditate and/or journal but your day just seems to slip away, then this episode is for you. In fact, the impacts of following the 20-20-20 formula, as outlined in Robin Sharma's book “The 5am Club”, will provide you with a condensed solid morning routine that is absolutely essential if you want to become a top performer. Imagine living happier each day because you have a body that you're more proud of, your stress levels never quite build up to that point where you're losing it, and your thoughts are more focused and deliberated. It all sounds too good to be true but trust me it is not. It only requires one small sacrifice and that is to wake up at 5am. At this time of the day, you knock our your 20-20-20 routine in the morning when there is no one to distract you. Implementing this knowledge has changed my life for the better in so many ways and I just can't help but to spread the good word. In fact, this knowledge Robin shares in his book motivated me to create this new podcast series on self-improvement. And in this episode, I talk about my experiences preforming this 20-20-20 formula and little tips and tricks I learned along the way either through my failures or my ground breaking insights I discovered. I pour my heart into this episode. I hope you too can start setting your alarm for 5am each day and getting after it!
