When it comes to improving our mental well-being, practising calm is one of the best places to start. Clarity of mind is extremely important when you are dealing with stress, problems and emotional turmoil. And remaining calm in times of turbulence and chaos, allows us to think more logically and make decisions accordingly. Rebekah Ballagh is the bestselling author and illustrator of 'Note to Self', 'Note to Self Journal', 'Words of Comfort', 'Be Your Best Self', 'Big Feelings' and 'Let's Go, Flo!' She's a qualified counsellor, somatic and nervous system regulation coach, trainer, speaker and the creator of popular Instagram community @journey_to_wellness_ Rebekah's latest book '101 Ways to Find Calm - How to use your body to soothe your mind', offers simple, powerful tools to teach you how to safely feel and process your emotions, rewire your brain and nervous system, and how to deeply connect with yourself. In this episode of The Happier Life Project Becks shares some of her favourite calming exercises from the book, whilst discussing with host Gabby why so many people around the world struggle with finding calm. Rebekah also talks about why it's so important to complete the stress response and sit with and digest difficult emotions, in order to come to a more peaceful place in the body. Gabby and Becks also look at the most common reasons why the brain won't allow us to relax, and what we can do to override or disengage the body's stress response - when it is unnecessarily activated. I've got an incredible interview to share with you all today that you do NOT want to miss! I recently sat down with productivity guru and journaling sensation Cathryn Lavery for a raw, uncensored chat that has never been heard before. As the founder of BestSelf Co and the creator of the wildly popular Self Journal that has taken over social media, Cathryn has built an empire empowering people to unlock their full potential through goal-setting and intentional living. But there's so much more to her story that you likely haven't heard. Trust me when I say Cathryn's journey has been anything but conventional. This rebellious entrepreneur was running full-fledged business operations in elementary school out of her mother's kitchen (I'll let Cathryn tell you exactly what those were). But flashforward from baking up a storm to studying architecture for nearly 7 years in college and grad school. Yup, you read that right! Listen in as Cathryn gets vulnerable about the uncertainty she faced and the calculated risks that eventually paid off in unimaginable ways. And this episode is jam-packed with so many golden nuggets of business, mindset and manifestation wisdom as Cathryn reflects on the major inflection points along her journey. You'll discover the unlikely way she met her business partner, the failures and wins they faced together, as well as the one game-changing piece of advice Cathryn received that completely transformed her relationship with her customers. I found myself furiously scribbling down notes during our exchange because Cathryn brilliantly broke down the exact templates and frameworks she's created for others to succeed. From morning rituals to unlocking productivity, sales funnels and minimalist marketing strategies, she generously shares the details other "gurus" often keep hidden behind paywalls and closed doors. So pull out your journals and prepare to have your mind blown as we uncover the secrets behind BestSelf's meteoric rise and the unlikely serial entrepreneur who started it all! Cathryn brought the straight fire and kept it real the entire conversation - if you're ready for pure inspiration and non-BS business advice from a self-made queen, press play NOW! "Having tools to lean on and support yourself when things get tough can be reassuring and empowering because you feel as though you're doing something proactive." Life is an up-and-down spiral. As a result, we get to experience the full spectrum of human emotions, which is both beautiful and challenging. But as we walk through life, we get to discover more about who we are because of the way we dance through the highs and hold ourselves through the lows. The lows can be challenging and complex because they can evoke feelings of overwhelm, uncertainty, chaos, stress, anxiety, and even burnout. So how can we stay grounded and clarify our thoughts during these times? Let's find some answers in this episode... In this week's episode, we explore: The power of supporting ourselves through pressure. The fear of losing the ground beneath our feet. What does it mean to stay grounded? Why overwhelming emotions stifle our decision-making skills. Using stream-of-consciousness journaling to articulate the turmoil within. "When we blurt out our thoughts in our journal, we empower ourselves to unpack them and process them."Using our journal to tackle worst-case scenarios and put worries to bed. Tackling disassociation through journaling. Finding our center through our five senses. The power of specificity in your journal. Exploring the art of noticing. And more... When you feel pressure, I want to suggest there's always a solution. There's always a way forward. There's always a next step you can take. Yes, the path ahead may be painful, challenging, or difficult… But along the way, you may gain some magic and beauty you didn't expect. And with your journal by your side, at least you can rely on one thing. YOU. Your voice. Your counsel. Your guidance. Your knowing. YOUR TRUTH. This week's journaling prompts: Exactly why do I feel pressured? What CAN I control? What's available to me right now? What NOW? What NEXT? What LATER? I can handle this because… Also, check out the BestSelf Co. range of journaling tools:1. Creating Your Live List [$5 investment].2. What decision do you need to make - and how much time do you have? What's the background to this decision? What are the opportunities (and what evidence do you have)? What are the risks (and what evidence do you have)? What does your head say? What does your heart say? What's most aligned with your core values? How would you advise a best friend making this same decision?Who can help you make this decision? What are the alternatives to this decision? The 10/10/10 Method. What's your decision… and why? In a world of instant gratification, where we want things NOW. Where information is at our fingertips. Where we're heavily influenced by the media and information that surrounds us. It's not always easy to give ourselves the space to really think things through. But sometimes, time is exactly what we need. When making big decisions, we need the space to feel into all the angles and possibilities. We need the space to gain SELF-AWARENESS plus the time to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Innovation, creativity, and lateral thinking are also useful skills for choosing well!Imagine how differently you'd feel if you KNOW you've made the right choice for you because you've thought through the decision thoroughly…Remember, your journal is here to hold you anytime you need to go deep. "Are the things you're chasing the things YOU want… or are they desires you've inherited from society?"Do your activities in the outside world leave you feeling fulfilled? How childhood experiences can make us lose trust in our self-expression. My personal story of reclaiming fearless self-expression. The power of the edit. And more...Deep down we all have a deep need to be seen for our truth. We're drawn to authenticity because there's a part of us that wants to experience life without the social mask. One of the reasons I journal is to access and claim the truth of who I am. This type of journaling is deep work - sacred work even...But I'm fully aware that there are times I don't go deep enough. Maybe you experience this too? Moments when you step away from your journal too soon - or when you hold back from pulling away a layer because you can't 'allow' yourself to go there. When we stay in the shallows with our inner inquiries, we limit the wisdom we can uncover. In turn, we miss out on the full potential that journaling has to offer. In this episode, we unpack the most common reasons why we get stuck in superficiality. Then reveal some proven, powerful practices for going deeper than we've ever gone before. Enjoy! I created this episode during the week of International Women's Day, and I was inspired by this potent quote. "Here's to strong women may we know them. May we be them. May we raise them."As I revisited this quote, I realised there's a journaling opportunity that I'd love to share. An opportunity that invites depth and complexity into our lives; two energies that I'm increasingly drawn to as a response to the superficiality that surrounds us. Tune in for more...In this episode we explore: A journaling exercise that invites complexity and depth into our lives. The problem with superficiality. Our attention spans are now less than a goldfish's! How information abundance is changing who we are (and why we should care). Why the global context says we need depth and complexity. When we encounter unexpected change, the shift in experience can knock us off our centre. Certainty is replaced with unpredictability, and that can leave us feeling exposed, vulnerable, and even unsafe. When our emotions are high, intelligence can be low. In turn, it's harder to think clearly. This can lead to inertia and a feeling of stuckness. The spiral gets reinforced! "When there's chaos in our lives, being able to come back to ourselves, recalibrate, and feel grounded in who we are is a powerful way to navigate life's ups and downs." Journaling is a powerful tool that can help you empower yourself in moments like these. In turn, you can connect with your inner wisdom, clear your head, and get clarity on what to do next. Tune into this episode to discover three powerful techniques that you can use together to move through a challenge and empower yourself. We're exploring:What is empowerment? Feeling out of control because of external circumstances and situations. When our emotions are high our intelligence is low. Journaling as a gateway tool to navigate triggers. Three techniques to find your centre. "When we find that calmer place, the intelligence returns, the answers show up and we feel more empowered to move forward."How to use stream of consciousness journaling to uncensor your expression. The power of acknowledgement and radical honesty.Lubricating throughs with journaling prompts.
