Steve Bug is a DJ and producer that has been electrifying dancefloors across the world since the early 90s with his signature sound that seamlessly integrates influences from across the entire spectrum of electronic music. A man that has been described by Resident Advisor as the "gentlemen of Techno," Steve is the mastermind behind the hugely influential label Poker Flat Recordings, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In our conversation, Steve tells us about his humble beginnings in Bremen, his meteoric rise to fame and how he has kept his label at the cutting edge of dance music for a quarter of a century. Are we partying like it's 1999? I mean what it was actually like in 99, not how Prince imagined it might be back in 1982.Millennium eve was supposed to be the best thing ever. I was beside myself with excitement for months beforehand, possibly years. But when push came to shove, my group of friends didn't even bother going to a rave and spent an underwhelming evening drinking warm champagne on Brighton Beach before attending a number of deeply boring house parties.The subsequent inquest carried out in the pages of Mixmag, DJ Mag, and the rest suggested that our experience wasn't unusual. Promoters lost unfathomable amounts of money that night and the overall impression was that an enormous bubble had prematurely burst with the least fanfare possible.The current landscape lacks a similar finishing line, but the bug-eyed faux enthusiasm and lip-smacking commercialism which seems to define everything in the dance scene right now definitely has a similar feel to the end of the 90s. But what, if anything, is going to let the air out this time? 1999 was also the time that our guest this week, Steve Bug, and some of the Superstition Records gang from Hamburg started Poker Flat Recordings, one of the labels that would define the minimal sound that emerged from the wreckage of Millennium Eve.Steve has been pretty outspoken in his interviews of the last few years on above topics, so of course I wanted to get him on the podcast to talk about it. This conversation dovetails nicely with last week's episode with Radio Slave, in which I noted that 'if something is shit, then you should say it's shit, and this [the current dance scene] is shit'.There is a reasonable degree of constructive comment in this episode though, as well as the doom. Florian Kruse on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 9/13/23 About Florian Kruse - There aren't many people that can say that they have devoted their entire life to electronic music, Florian is most certainly one of them. DJ, producer, lecturer, plus label owner? Yes, Kruse has ticked all the boxes. His passion for music began in his hometown in Northern Germany. An avid reader of Frontline magazine, and later the Raveline, his love for electronic music was born at 14, when he bought his first turntable. Early influences included legends such as Moodyman, Herbert and Steve Bug. At 16, Kruse invested in his first sampler, a mixer and a keyboard. With music in mind, he made the natural migration to Hamburg in 2002, where he studied Audio Engineering, and later taught at SAE. Long time in the game, he started his music career in 2007, with his first vinyl release on Stockholms, Heya Hifi. Since then, Kruse has only grown as both a producer and a DJ. With Stel Vassiloudis and Nils Nuernberg, he became project Wiretappeur, with releases on Bedrock and a remix for label head honcho John Digweed. Nils Nuernberg quickly became his partner in crime, and together became the production duo Kruse & Nuernberg, their hypnotic Deep House sound making appearances on Liebe*Detail, Exploited, and Rejected. In 2008 they started their own label, Save Room Recordings. A focus on his own productions, Kruse plunged into a solo career with a release on Anjunadeep, working together with his older brother Vincenzo and one of his longtime idols Lisa Shaw. Followed by releases on Noir Music, Poker Flat Recordings, Stil Vor Talent, Joris Voorn's GREEN imprint, Kompakt, Last Night On Earth and Suara and remixes by Noir, Eagles & Butterflies, Joris Voorn, Pleasurekraft, Coyu, David Morales and the list of releases and remixes goes on. After a couple of feature tracks with singer / songwriter Hendrik Burkhard Florian and Hendrik started a LIVE project presenting ‘TheGround' with an album (Dediction) in October 2017 on Steve Bug's Audimatique label. With a long time passion for house and techno that dates back to the early years, Kruse is first and foremost a DJ, taking his signature sound to world renowned clubs. Now settled in the German capital, Berlin, a true hub for electronic music, with regular DJ appearances at the city's infamous underground clubs. In 2023 Florian released 'Nordic Soul', his 3rd album afterKruse & Nuernberg -“Let's Call It A Day”in 2012 and The Ground - “Dediction” in 2017. Florian Kruse on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/29/22 About Florian Kruse - There aren't many people that can say that they have devoted their entire life to electronic music, Florian is most certainly one of them. DJ, producer, lecturer, plus label owner? Yes, Kruse has ticked all the boxes. His passion for music began in his hometown in Northern Germany. An avid reader of Frontline magazine, and later the Raveline, his love for electronic music was born at 14, when he bought his first turntable. Early influences included legends such as Moodyman, Herbert and Steve Bug. At 16, Kruse invested in his first sampler, a mixer and a keyboard. With music in mind, he made the natural migration to Hamburg in 2002, where he studied Audio Engineering, and later taught at SAE. Long time in the game, he started his music career in 2007, with his first vinyl release on Stockholms, Heya Hifi. Since then, Kruse has only grown as both a producer and a DJ. With Stel Vassiloudis and Nils Nuernberg, he became project Wiretappeur, with releases on Bedrock and a remix for label head honcho John Digweed. Nils Nuernberg quickly became his partner in crime, and together became the production duo Kruse & Nuernberg, their hypnotic Deep House sound making appearances on Liebe*Detail, Exploited, and Rejected. In 2008 they started their own label, Save Room Recordings. A focus on his own productions, Kruse plunged into a solo career with a release on Anjunadeep, working together with his older brother Vincenzo and one of his longtime idols Lisa Shaw. Followed by releases on Noir Music, Poker Flat Recordings, Stil Vor Talent, Joris Voorn's GREEN imprint, Kompakt, Last Night On Earth and Suara and remixes by Noir, Eagles & Butterflies, Joris Voorn, Pleasurekraft, Coyu, David Morales and the list of releases and remixes goes on. After a couple of feature tracks with singer / songwriter Hendrik Burkhard Florian and Hendrik started a LIVE project presenting ‘TheGround' with an album (Dediction) in October 2017 on Steve Bug's Audimatique label. With a long time passion for house and techno that dates back to the early years, Kruse is first and foremost a DJ, taking his signature sound to world renowned clubs. Steve Bug is one of electronic music's true originals. His relentless commitment to quality - both in his own work and in the many producers he has championed - has made him one of the world's most revered artists and curators, and along with his label Poker Flat has made a sizeable contribution to building the European house and techno scene as we know it. A dedicated, energetic and constantly innovative talent, Resident Advisor once called Steve Bug the “gentleman of techno” referring to his sense of duty and dependability as one of the world's most renowned DJs and producers. That same professionalism that means he's hardly ever missed a DJ gig is evident in his work as a composer, producer and owner of the Poker Flat Recordings label: a label whose influence on house and techno cannot be overstated. Every step he takes is well considered, but always tempered with his own fine sense of humour and innate love for his craft. Having grown up in Germany's techno and acid-house heyday, Steve Bug's love for a perfect groove is as apparent now as it was back then. His DJ skills and a keen, innovative ear led him not down the typical path of the early nineties trance and harder dance scene, but instead towards a fresher, hybrid sound–merging stripped deep house, tweaked out acid and more minimal forms of techno and electronic music. Although dedicated to his own labels – first and foremost the aforementioned Poker Flat – Steve's talents have naturally attracted the attention of other imprints. Bedrock, Knee Deep In Sound, Minus, Cocoon and Defected are just some of the labels that have championed original tracks and remixes.  Steve is also one of the few electronic artists capable of putting out a ‘proper' album. Having released no fewer than five full length LPs over the last two decades, his latest Paradise Sold alongside Langenberg - a full ten-track album of exquisitely crafted house music on Poker Flat –was released in 2018 to critical acclaim, and described as “elegantly euphoric” by Mixmag, while a remix package of Paradise Sold with new interpretations from Rodriguez Jr., Frankey & Sandrino, Cassy and Virginia was supported by DJs and tastemaker publications across the board.   In 2019 Poker Flat celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking this impressive milestone with a series of remixes of some of its most iconic releases from an incredible array of talented artists including Tim Engelhardt, Michael Meyer, Catz 'n Dogz, Acid Pauli, Guti, Butch, Matthias Kaden and Francois K. The anniversary remix series continues into 2020, with Harry Romero, Catz N Dogz and Acid Pauli amongst the producers given the keys to the hallowed Poker Flat vaults.  2019 also saw the launch of a new sublabel for Poker Flat, Sublease Music. Sublease was set up to champion deeper, more club-ready, tracky cuts from exceptionally talented producers that deserve a platform for people to hear them. This was the ethos with which Steve originally set up Poker Flat, so it seems fitting that as he celebrates 20 years of Poker Flat it's time for Sublease Music to bring a different sound to the world. Hitting its seventh release in summer 2020, Sublease has already made its mark, with exceptional releases from Kellie Allen, MANIK, Buraq and more besides.  In 2020 Steve released his sixth studio album, Never Ending Winding Roads, with much of it produced during the months of enforced isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the track titles reflect Steve's headspace during this time, with themes of solitude, contemplation and reflection brought to the fore perhaps more than with any of his previous work, with the 11 tracks exploring a range of different styles, including minimal house music, moody techno and effervescent breaks.

The rise of electronic music must have had an influence on numerous biographies in the early 90s. The new sound in the clubs also left its mark on Sven Tasnadi. Born in 1978 in Leipzig, he is one of the figureheads of his hometown's extremely vivid club scene. In 1995, after innumerable clubbing nights, he was curious enough to learn deejaying himself. Through acid house and Chicago house, he found his way to more minimalistic forms of house and techno. It wasn't long before he was being booked for gigs in Leipzig clubs. Soon he also had his first gigs outside of Leipzig – for instance at the legendary Berlin Tresor. In addition to deejaying, Sven Tasnadi was also attracted to the idea of producing his own tracks. In the beginning his equipment was still relatively modest. However, over the past years, he has managed to create a studio setup that meets his standards. In terms of musical style, the Leipzig-based artist has always kept all options open – his tracks vary from deep house, percussive-reduced tech house and soul influences to trip hop and ambient. Today Sven Tasnadi is considered a firm fixture in the German clubbing culture. His tracks have appeared on EPs released by labels such as Cocoon Recordings, Smallville Records, Poker Flat Recordings, Liebe*Detail and Ornaments. Sven Väth was especially impressed by Tasnadi early on and licensed his track “Waiting For You Again” for his “Sound of Season” compilation. At the same time, he produced more than a dozen remixes for Steve Bug, Johannes Heil, Anja Schneider and others. Sven Tasnadi now has regular releases on Cargo Edition. As one of its most important artists, he has a considerable impact on the label's sound. In 2015, the label Oh! Yeah! was discontinued. Still, it was also the year in which Sven decided to produce his second studio album, this time with a clear focus on more club oriented sounds. Its title All In was chosen to reflect the wide spectrum of dance tracks it contained, ranging from rather low energy warm up tracks to full-blown peaktime bangers. Российский проект DP-6 на своем одноименном лейбле выпускает исключительно качественный материал, который можно без прослушивания ставить в эфире. Так случилось и сегодня, когда в своих колонках вы слушаете великолепное творение ребят под названием Emphasis. Такой узнаваемый и любимый саунд от талантливого тандема музыкантов - настоятельно рекомендую! Владелец именитого лейбла Poker Flat, диджей и продюсер Steve Bug с новым треком Emphasizer, который он написал совместно со своим товарищем по студии, музыкантом Langenberg. How did these tracks have an impact on your later doings? A: The tracks in the mix played an important role in my career as a DJ and producer. Apart from the Kraftwerk tune, all of them are from the period between 1990 - 1997, the time when I got infected with the Techno & House virus and started to buy records and became step by step a DJ. I still love them all, they are timeless and still playable, which is amazing. Q: Your tour schedule looks huge. Where do you find your rest? A: Somewhere in between touring, studio work and family life. Honestly more while touring than at home with 2 little kids. Q: Which Resmann and Upon.You projects are upcoming? A: End of September I will release my third EP on Poker Flat Recordings. I’ve contributed a track for the 15 Years Watergate compilation, which will be out in November. I also have my third EP on Watergate Records in the pipeline, which I produced together with some great talents from South Africa at the Red Bull Studio in Cape Town. Oliver Huntemann delivered a badass Techno Remix. Release date will be probably November or December. With Upon You we're celebrating our 10 years anniversary and are planning a jubilee compilation as well. More info soon.
