He is the Chief Knowledge Officer for Belvedere Health Services in Albany, NY and the Founder and Director of the Mill School in Burlington, VT. For 20 years Tim was the Project Director of the New York Neurobehavioral Resource Project, a CMS identified best practice model program developed to support individuals with brain injury and other neurogenic disorders and significant behavioral challenges to live successfully in their home communities. In addition he is a Principle Investigator for the Behaviours of Concern Project, a five year grant funded research project of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. A catastrophic stroke threatened to destroy everything Mike and Denise Shearer had built together: Their home, their family, their life. In November of 2017, Mike Shearer was admitted to the ICU at Methodist Hospital in Omaha with pneumonia and complications from diabetes.The following evening, Mike suffered a significant stroke and was rushed to Nebraska Medicine where he underwent a risky and life-saving craniectomy.. This procedure involved removing a large section of Mike's skull as well as a significant amount of brain tissue. He had seen another hunter on his land, got in his UTV and planned to speak with him. But as he approached, a front tire on the UTV fell off a terrace. The vehicle rolled, throwing Templien, who was not wearing a seat belt. After an initial hospital stay and plenty of hard work over the next four years in rehabilitation, Templien has found himself on his feet again. He no longer uses a wheelchair. Dr. Gater was president of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals and was active in the American Spinal Injury Association, the Veterans Health Administration, VA System of Care, and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He was also a member of the Association of Academic Physiatrists and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, along with other associations.Dr. Gater was also a research scientist at The Miami Project; chief of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service for UM Hospital and Clinics, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center; and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship director. Nationally, he was co-director, National Institute on Disability Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) South Florida Spinal Cord Injury Model System, one of just 14 such centers in the country.Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, electrodiagnostic medicine, and spinal cord injury medicine, Dr. Gater was extensively published and made hundreds of local, departmental, and conference presentations. He was internationally known for his work in obesity and metabolic disease among people with spinal cord injury and disease, and was a staunch advocate for his patients.A world-renowned physician and researcher, Dr. Gater will be remembered as brilliant, innovative, kind, and compassionate. In this podcast, we explore hot topics in rehabilitation, the keys to personal growth and recovery, and how to apply it all to the real-world. We are constantly trying to be more efficient and “multi-task.” What may come as a surprise is that we are quite ineffective at juggling more than one thing at a time. What does this have to do with relationship building? In conversation, we are easily distracted by our own thoughts or our environment effectively forcing us to choose between information sharing and active listening.  Active listening is different than hearing, as one is intentional and hearing is more passive in nature. In this episode of Kintinu'd Conversations, Brad Dexter, Ana Hancock, and Tim Benak welcome back Jill Guenther to the podcast to continue the conversation about Relationship Building with a special emphasis on active listening.
