It's "barbecue," but you know...if you spell it "barbeque," or "BBQ," or "Bar-b-que," it's gonna taste just as good! I got an interview with my man Dave Graham of Graham's Up In Smoke in Philipsburg. Dave's got opinions about barbecue, and that's 100% cool, because he makes excellent barbecue: brisket, pork, chicken (when it's reasonable), sausage, turkey, and salmon. Yes, salmon...but you'll have to wait for Lent! Dave and I got well into the weeds, temperatures, wood, and cuts of meat, and you will be drooling by the time we're done. I'll give you my opinions on barbecue as well; I have been smoking/barbecueing for well over ten years, and I will challenge your thoughts on this ancient method of meat magic cookery. What else? I finally got my first Maibock of the year, from New Trail Brewing, and the Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about three GREAT music venues in Centre County (all of them have a liquor license, so, you know). Next episode? I've got an interview on Monday that I have wanted to get for longer than we've had the podcast, an OG beer bar that I first visited over 20 years ago. That's going to be the heart of a great town profile, I guarantee. See you in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! Elite climber Emil Abrahamsson shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game - Emil is an incredibly strong boulderer with a particular talent for compression and sloper problems, along with harnessing dynamic movement. He has sent loads of the world's toughest blocks, flashing up to V12 and redpointing up to V15, which he accomplished on the Dave Graham test piece, Story of Two Worlds. He documented that process beautifully on his YouTube Channel – which has over 100k subscribers and is growing fast. He has a real talent for bringing us viewers into his process, riding the rollercoaster of emotions from beginning to end. He also creates fantastic training content, most famous of which is probably the No Hang Protocol video he put out a couple years ago and went viral. Emil really exemplifies the intangible traits that make elite climbers who they are – an incredible work ethic, unstoppable passion, and seemingly unlimited psych to dig deeper and try harder than even seems possible. - CHAPTERS: Struggle: 0:08:43 Training: 0:13:36 Nutrition: 0:27:22 Tactics: 0:42:37 Mental Game: 0:56:07 Purpose: 1:06:22 Takeaways: 1:16:11 Follow along on Instagram @sheneenagins and @thestruggleclimbingshow. - The Struggle is on YouTube! Climbing performance is fairly complex because there's so many moving parts to the equation and many of the skills take years, if not decades, to perfect. Fortunately, Tom Randall is on the podcast in this episode to give you another 'solo' session on what things really make a difference in climbing your best. In this 2 parter, he dives into a variety of factors that probably don't get enough discussion, but make a massive difference to your climbing. Get over half of these items ticked off and perfected, and you'll probably see 1-2 grades of climbing improvement at your projecting level in a single season. Obviously, if you're already at a Dave Graham level of obsession and strategy, then this can act as a list to give yourself a big pat on the back as you'll find that he and all the rest of the pros are seriously paying attention to these factors. It's funny where we end up, this random world kind of chucking us around like socks in the laundry. Existential mysteries aside, watching the folks around us land where they were meant to be is one of the great joys of being a human. After leaving Delaware for the mountains of Colorado, Cameron Maier joined a trail crew in Rocky Mountain National Park, already infatuated with climbing and hoping to put to use a college degree. When he was furloughed in 2010 as the season drew to a close, Cam used his government cheese to buy his first camera. And he met Dave Graham. The rest is...well, you know. Whether by chance or fate, Cam found himself running in a ridiculously elite crew, with Dave Graham at the height of his powers and Daniel Woods, Isabelle Faus, Jon Cardwell, and a host of others crushing rigs and raising their standards on a seemingly weekly basis. Cam had his cameras at the ready. In the years since those halcyon days, Cameron grew the fledgling Bearcam Media into one of the most recognizable entities in climbing film and photography. From those early stoke films came a sharpened eye and growing ambition, resulting in award-winning films like "Craig's Reaction" and festival standards like "Concepcion" and "Sonnie Trotter Vs. The Totem Pole." He messed around hilariously in "Bierstadt - Bierstadt" and dove deep into symbolism and iconography in my personal favorite, "Stone-Spirit." Hell, he just dropped two episodes of his work covering a tour with the DJ/producer/songwriter, Diplo. God forgive what I'm about to write...but there's no hibernation in Bearcam's future and we're here for it. That you just had to read that sentence brings me unspeakable joy. I imagine this episode - especially the outro - is going to demand some conversation. Drop us a line with pitches, concerns, gripes, or gifts and treasures at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com or find us on Insta @thethundercling. As always, thanks to Ryne Doughty for the delicious musical stylings! Happy New Year, Thunder Friends. I'm raising my glass to a bit of hope and equanimity in the...LOLOLOLOL... Eh, let's just survive.

Along with climbing a score of V15s, Paul has sought out first ascents on almost every continent, starred in some of the finest climbing films ever made, and most importantly carried himself with humor, creativity, and dignity along the way. Jeremy Fullerton needs no introduction. Literally. He sat in the Thundercling studio for episode 8. If you haven't listened to that...what are you waiting for? Paul and Jeremy joined us for a wide-ranging conversation covering everything from Paul's discovery of climbing as a grommet in New Jersey to why he and Jeremy decided to use a Toys R Us chainsaw to remove timber while building Paul's new house. Paul also digs into media creation, his competitive nature, his bonkers rise as one of the strongest boulderers in the world, and the speculative nature of grading the most difficult rigs on the planet. Finally, for the first time in public, he digs into the controversy surrounding his epic 2010 ascent of the American classic Lucid Dreaming (V15) in the Buttermilks, Bishop, CA. What does it feel like to wake up and realize you might be the strongest boulderer in the world, on that day and in that moment? How do you defend yourself against naysayers after FA'ing one of the most difficult rigs on the planet, with an unimpeachable resume but lacking the "uncut footy" as proof? And what becomes of a climbing culture when our strongest and most admired climbers are lambasted and threatened simply because they didn't get around to setting up a camera to document a send for their sponsors, a film, the consumer, whomever? Paul and Jeremy, like Dante and Virgil, escort us through the inside world of professional climbing, from the goofiest beginnings to the horror of public humiliation to finally owning one's own past and future and taking the reigns for good. It's a helluva tour. Have a question, suggestion, feedback or a good joke? Wanna know what kind of shampoo products Fidi uses to treat that illustrious mane? Drop us a line at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com. We read and respond to every missive. Thanks as always to Ryne Doughty for the dope tunes! Our musical inspiration just took a tumble from a ladder and broke his jaw...and is still playing shows. Heal up, you monster! And, as always, thanks for giving us a listen. We appreciate it beyond words.
Does AI have intuition? It’s tough to say. Some experts predict AI will take the guesswork out of stock markets, come out on top in high-stakes competitive games, and figure out what we’re thinking before we think it. But will it? And how soon? With so much data being fed into AI, it’s reasonable to assume raw computational power and better information are stand-ins for intuition itself, yet that doesn’t entirely explain AI’s ability to be … well … truly intelligent. Jessica is joined by emerging technologies guru Dave Graham of Dell Technologies, Raphael Fiorentino of AI investing app Butterwire, Victor Kristof of sports prognostication startup Kickoff AI, Ani Kembhavi of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and Professor Tuomas Sandholm of Carnegie Mellon University. AI’s capacity for augmenting human intelligence is already helping humans making more educated guesses in several different arenas, by looking at wide swaths of historical data and trend analysis. But can it win at poker? Jessica goes head-to-head in Texas Hold ‘Em to find out just how intuitive AI can be. Watch Jessica try to call the AI's bluff on our YouTube channel.
If you’ve been to a medical facility recently, you may have already had some of your healthcare provided for you by AI. Massive amounts of raw medical data have been compiled since medical imaging hit the scene, and with computing power up to the task, it can now be harnessed in novel, fascinating ways: diagnosing life-threatening diseases, plus assessing risk of disease and pregnancy complications. And that’s just the start. With any new technology comes risk: More data can improve diagnosis, treatment, healthcare and operational efficiency, but sensitive data requires stringent security measures. It’s one thing if someone steals your credit card … quite another altogether if someone steals your DNA. Data scientists and security experts are working tirelessly to make sure AI’s arrival into the medical arena is a seamless, secure one. Host Jessica Chobot checks in for a checkup and is joined on her wellness journey by Dave Graham of Dell Technologies, Eran Orr, Founder & CEO of AR/VR health startup XR Health, Dekel Gelbman of Boston biotech firm FDNA, and Joe Marks, Executive Director of the Center for Machine Learning and Health at Carnegie-Mellon University. Can fully autonomous AI replace doctors, nurses, clinicians and surgeons? Will AI give Jessica a clean bill of health? Find out in this episode of Hype v. Reality. And head to our YouTube channel to watch Jessica's VR session.
Is AI really coming for all of our jobs? Or is fear of a robot takeover based on hype? To find out, host—and fellow human—Jessica Chobot talks with leading AI experts to uncover the source of the hype, reveal just how challenging it is to train a robot, and clearly define the role of machines in the workplace. In the “AI on the Job” episode of AI: Hype vs. Reality, you’ll hear Dave Graham from Dell Technologies explain the difference between job augmentation and replacement. Geoffrey Hinton—the “godfather of deep learning” and recipient of the 2018 Turing Award—gives insight into why humans fear robots to begin with. Andra Keay, managing director of Silicon Valley Robotics, deftly puts these fears to rest by relegating robots to tasks, not jobs. And Dylan Losey of Stanford University discusses why he thinks robots could use more of a human touch… literally. Finally, Jessica heads to Kindred in Toronto, where she talks to co-founder James Bergstra and learns to pilot the aptly-named SORT AI robot, putting it to the task of sorting online orders and answering the question: AI co-workers—hype or reality? Want to see how well Jessica can handle SORT? Head here to watch. Please let us know what you think of the show by leaving us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts
Self-driving cars: the greatest automotive industry disruption since Henry Ford’s Model-T assembly line… just around the corner. Right? That’s the hype—but is it reality? Are we mere blocks away from our neighborhood streets and freeways being filled with autonomous cars? Find out in the premiere episode of AI: Hype vs. Reality, a new podcast and video series in which Jessica Chobot, veteran host of Nerdist News and Bizarre States, puts present-day artificial intelligence technology to the test in real-world situations. And separates the hype from reality. In this inaugural episode, “AI That Drives”, Jessica talks with Dell Technologies’ emerging tech lead, Dave Graham, to get some context behind the hype around self-driving cars and what’s standing in the way of autonomous cars taking over our roadways. Guest Ram Vasudevan from the University of Michigan discusses the #1 concern—safety—and the data behind predicting pedestrian behavior. And guest Tim Sylvester explains his company’s, Integrated Roadways, solution to moving mass amounts of data between cars and between the car and the road—turning the road itself into a smart wireless network. Finally, after Jessica speaks with Ragavan Thurairatnam, cofounder and chief of machine learning at Dessa about the challenges of programming self-driving cars, she heads to the University of Toronto to take an experimental autonomous car named Zeus out for a spin. Hear how her adventure ends (spoiler: not everything goes according to program) and decide for yourself: self-driving cars—hype or reality? Want to watch Jessica’s test drive? Head here to see the action unfold.
Dave Graham and Brian Reaves of Dell Technologies collaborate on a session discussing Bias in AI. This is a sociological and engineering (lite) approach to discussing bias.

On this week's episode we talk to music festival super-producer Dave Graham and go behind the scenes to find out exactly what it takes to organize one of the biggest music festivals in the country, BottleRock. Graham jumped in to save the BottleRock brand following a successful, but financially problematic inaugural year of the festival. Coming up this weekend at Glen Ellen's BR Cohn Winery, live music is reignited for the Sonoma Harvest Music Festival. The two-day music festival marks the return of a large-scale music festival to the winery after a 3-year hiatus following the cancelation of the long running Fall Music Festival.
