I'm not sure how to introduce my latest (and newest) Cool Friend, Paige Harbison. She's an accomplished author who got her first novel published at the age of 19, a viral sensation on TikTok and Instagram with her One-Minute Hallmark Movie videos, she hosts the fantastic "Nameless Best Friends" podcast with her mother and brother, she's a painter, she's...well, she's a little bit of everything. Wait, scratch that: She's a LOTTA bit of everything, and she's an incredibly Cool Friend. This quickly became one of those effortless podcasts that took on a life of its own almost immediately. This could have easily become a 3 or 4 hour podcast, and it almost did, but my schedule and bank account couldn't have handled that much editing. Please enjoy this episode, follow Paige on the socials (@Pharbeaux), check out Nameless Best Friends, and go buy her books, including the recent hit The Other Side of Now, which you can get at stores that have books. (They should come up with a better name for that). And please head over to Patreon.com/jeffmay to enjoy (among other things) the exclusive content that we recorded JUST FOR PATRONS!

"Hope taught me the meaning of life, Tina taught me the meaning of love"' It's not everyday you meet a golden retriever in Thailand. When Niall came across a dog shackled to a short chain and in a poor state of health something reminded him of his personal battle with addiction. He knew he had to rescue her immediately - golden retrievers are rare in Thailand - but there was just something about this dog in particular that told him she was destined for more. He named her Tina, and what she did next is an incredible tale of survival, hope and love. Despite her terrible treatment at the hands of humans, she refused to distrust them or feel sorry for herself, and only opened her heart wider - always with a grin (yes dogs can smile) and a reassuring wag of her shaggy yellow tail. From the minute Tina was free of her chains, she got on with what needed to be done, inspiring a dog hospital to be built and named after her and helping dogs from all over the world - whether they're street dogs from Thailand or rescue pups in Montana. His first book, Hope: How Street Dogs Taught Me the Meaning of Life, was an international bestseller. Colin Blunstone, lead singer of The Zombies (She's Not There, Tell Her No, Time of the Season) and actor and director Robert Schwartzmann (The Princess Diaries) check in regarding the new "Hung Up On A Dream: The Zombies Documentary." Ironically, The Zombies had broken up--and Blunstone was selling insurance--by the time their final and most well-known single ("Time Of The Season") hit the charts in 1968. Niall Harbison was a very successful entrepreneur in Ireland, setting up and selling a social media marketing agency and the very popular and sometimes controversial ‘Lovin Dublin' media brand. But a combination of burnout and partying too hard, too often, led him to cut ties with Ireland and start a calmer and healthier life in Thailand. But unfortunately things got far worse, and his addiction to drink and prescription drugs soon led him to wake up in a hospital bed, at the point of near death. Niall promised himself that things would dramatically change from that day on. It wasn't easy, but slowly he turned his life around and today, Niall is the founder and mastermind behind Happy Doggo, rescuing and feeding as many of Thailand's millions of stray dogs as he possibly can. His work saving dogs has also saved his life. This is a conversation that I enjoyed so much, and I know you will too. Check out Niall's latest bestselling book - Tina: The dog who changed the world. Send us a text"What if your darkest moment became the catalyst for your greatest transformation?"This question lies at the heart of my profound conversation with Niall Harbison, whose remarkable journey from corporate success to rock-bottom alcoholism to purposeful revival might just change your perspective on what truly matters in life.Niall's story begins as a private chef for billionaires aboard luxury yachts, where million-dollar fuel bills and private jets delivering Italian cheese were commonplace. He witnessed firsthand the hollow nature of extreme wealth before returning to Dublin to build his own successful businesses. Yet beneath this veneer of achievement lurked depression, anxiety, and a growing dependence on alcohol. When COVID struck, Niall's life spiraled into a six-week bender in Thailand that nearly killed him. Lying in a hospital bed, certain he was dying, he experienced a revelation that would transform everything: the corporate success, social media followers, and material possessions he'd chased meant absolutely nothing. What flashed through his mind instead were simple moments of childhood joy and connection. That rock-bottom moment became what Niall now calls "the best thing in my life." Upon recovery, he discovered purpose in rescuing Thailand's street dogs. What began as feeding a few hungry canines has expanded into a charity that feeds 1,200 dogs daily, performs thousands of sterilizations monthly, and has built a hospital named after Tina, a special rescue who lived just six months in freedom after a lifetime of abuse.Niall's transformation at age 41 stands as powerful testament that it's never too late to reinvent yourself. His advice resonates with brutal honesty: "Follow your own path. Take risks. You don't have to do the life that's mapped out for you."Whether you're questioning your purpose or just need a reminder of what truly matters, this conversation might be exactly what you need to hear. Sometimes you have to power through the beginnings of things. That seemed to be the case for the Louisville Economic Development Alliance (LEDA), a newly-formed group of local business leaders who are taking the reins of economic development under Mayor Craig Greenberg. The group got started this week under buggy circumstances, as Reporter Michael L. Jones explains on the Access Louisville podcast. Some of the issues included a failed attempt to record the public meeting, microphone feedback and an awkwardly arranged room that had members of the alliance sitting with their backs to the press in attendance. In spite of the issues, the effort does bring a lot of the city's biggest players in business to the table to focus on economic development. Among the board members are Lawson Whiting, president and CEO of Brown-Forman; Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Inc. and Brian Cromer, partner and chair of the business and finance group at Stites & Harbison, PLLC. You can see the full list of who's on the board here. Also on the show this week, we discussed recent news that Fabletics is closing its Louisville facility. While the job losses are difficult, we reflect on whether there is a wider trend toward fatigue with subscription-based services. We also chat about a new bourbon attraction and upscale restaurant opening next to the KFC Yum Center on Whiskey Row. The facility opens in Main Street space that formerly housed Bearno's — and there's a Bearno's partner involved in the deal to establish the new spot, as Reporter Stephen P. Schmidt explains. Finally, we wrap up the show on a somber note by discussing the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally last week in Virginia. Sadly, the attempt served as a grim reminder of the dangers of political violence in America. It hit particularly close to home for Mayor Greenberg, who survived as assassination attempt himself while running for Mayor. Reporter Piper Hansen reflected on listening to the mayor talk about it during a press conference this week.

Dinner for Shoes is a podcast hosted by Sarah Wasilak, a fashion and food enthusiast with her mouth full. With appearances by her cats, Trish and Kit, and agendas that almost always go to shit, we aim to dive into a discussion about fashion and style and break some bread in each episode.  In episode 19, Black Owned Businesses + Fashion Brands, Sarah spotlights Black designers, CEOs, and founders making waves in the industry. Dressed in two separate outfits (one to interview and one to play host), Sarah shares her favorite features of each look from head to toe. With special appearances from the faces behind clothing companies, jewelry brands, shoe collections, and more, Sarah leads conversations that shed light on what makes these brands unique. Later, she enjoys West Indian cuisine from Freetown Road Project, a Caribbean eatery located in Jersey City started by “Chopped” champion Claude Lewis.  Dinner for Shoes podcast episodes are released weekly on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple. You can follow along for updates, teasers, and more on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. I'm on a break over the Christmas period so I am re-releasing a few episodes over the next few weeks that really connected with listeners from 2023.In September I spoke to dog lover and activist Niall Harbison. If you're an animal lover and you're on social media, there is a strong possibility that you already follow Niall.Originally from Co. Tyrone, he grew up in Brussels but never lost his Irish accent. And over the past 21 months he has been devoting his time to help save street dogs in Thailand. And to fully understand the man he is today; we need to go back through some of the experiences that have shaped him in his life. When he was 13, his parents separated, and his mother then had a relationship with an abusive partner which had a massive impact on him. He has been a private chef of Billionaires, a successful and at times controversial entrepreneur, and at his lowest point he found himself in ICU after a drink and drug fuelled binge. He's been sober for about 3 years now and his mission is to half the population of stray dogs in the world over the next 20-30 years. His book – ‘Hope - how street dogs have taught me the meaning of life' was released this Autumn and it's an incredible read.I hope you feel inspired by our conversation as Niall is the perfect example of how it's never too late to change your life. For more information on the work he's doing and if you'd like to donate…Click hereResources :If you need to talk to someone, you can contact a Samaritan on Freephone 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.ieIf you're a fan of my pod, please follow, rate and review in all the usual places. And thanks, as always, for your support of Ready to be Real. Charles Harbison relaunched Harbison Studio in 2022, six years after putting the luxury fashion brand on pause. And it's already clear that, this time around, he's doing things differently.   “I'm building a brand with more authenticity,” Harbison said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. “I've tried to do it before in the way that everyone said I should do it. And it just was not for me.” Harbison was thrust into helming a fashion brand in 2013, when he launched Harbison Studio after an unexpected chain of events while between jobs: To avoid holes in his portfolio, after working 7-8 years for brands including Michael Kors and Billy Reid, he created and photographed a small fashion collection. He showed those to two advisors, who showed them to Vogue editors, which led to placement in Vogue's September issue and an order from Ikram, Chicago's influential boutique.  “In some ways, the cart was before the horse,” Harbison said. “I hate to say that because, in my perfect world, talent, craft and a love of fashion is the horse. But in our world now, with fashion, money's always the horse. And that is what I quickly learned over those two years of making clothes that I love, but not really building a business.” Eventually, Harbison decided to step away from the brand, which had already gained fans including Michelle Obama and Beyoncé. But he'd always planned to return: “I moved to L.A. to regroup and center my wellness, but the thing that never left me was the fact that women love what I do. And there are so many people in the world who relate to it. [I knew that] one day, I'd come back and resume my conversation with them through clothes.”  Shortly after New York Fashion Week, in early October, Harbison met with Glossy to share how his return to fashion is playing out. Along with hinting at a new Bergdorf Goodman partnership, he promoted an active friends and family funding round. He plans to use the funds to expand his team and the brand's product categories — it's recently inched into jewelry and handbags, and shoes are next.

Just a few years ago, Niall Harbison, entrepreneur and creator, was 'living his best life'. From the outside in it looked like he had it all, successful businesses and great people around him. But today he speaks straight from the heart about the reality of his life. Having sold his successful business Lovin Dublin, he moved to Thailand and hit rock bottom, he live tweeted about his breakdown and alcohol addiction and he ended up in intensive care. From there everything changed. With hope, belief and kindness everything changed. Now, two years later he has built an incredibly successful charity, feeding 800 street dogs a day (with an aim to reach 250 million globally). Everywhere he goes 100s of people follow him, he is so loved and today he tells us how kindness saved his life.   Thank you ReproMed for supporting The Good Glow Check out Niall's book HOPE Join the September Reset HSE Drugs & Alcohol Helpline: This confidential service has both a freephone Helpline (1800 459 459) and an email support service (helpline@hse.ie). SynopsisThe American composer John Harbison was born in 1938, and so, as a young lad, grew up at the tail end of the Golden Age of radio and the big band Era of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, the Dorsey Brothers, and Benny Goodman.“Over the radio,” writes Harbison, “came sounds played by bands in hotels and ballrooms, now distant memories that seemed to a seventh-grade, small town, late-night listener like the pulse of giant imagined cities.”Decades later, John Harbison translated those early musical memories into a three-movement composition for a big band orchestra. “These sounds,” he recalled, “layered with real experience of some of their places of origin, magnified, distorted, idealized, and destabilized, came into contact with other sounds, some of recent origin, and resulted in a celebratory, menacing suite I titled Three City Blocks.”The U.S. Air Force Band gave the premiere performance of “Three City Blocks” on today's date in 1993. And, keeping in the spirit of the old days when every major hotel could boast its own dance band, Harbison's Three City Blocks premiered at the Hilton Hotel in Fort Smith, Arkansas.Music Played in Today's ProgramJohn Harbison (b. 1938) Three City Blocks New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble; Frank Battisti, conductor. On a chilly Sunday morning in December of 1980, Michael Kelly arrived at a neighbours house in a panic. There was a fire in the house he was staying in nearby, and inside were the two elderly siblings who he was there to look after. Sadly, Margaret and Martin Glynn - siblings in their 80s - were removed from the house and pronounced dead. But was this a tragic accident, or a malicious act driven by greed? Harbison goes Baroque

Synopsis A now-obscure Englishman named Charles Caleb Colton is credited with the famous adage that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” On today's date in 1985, a new work by the American composer John Harbison premiered in Sarasota, Florida, that imitated the form and gestures of the Baroque Concerto Grossos written by Bach or Handel. Harbison's work was titled “Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet, and Strings.”Harbison described it as follows: “The oboe, clarinet, and strings are equal partners. The first movement is declamatory, the second contemplative, and the last frenetic. Each movement sustains one affect [or mood], in the Baroque manner... The steady insistent rhythms are indeed baroque, the harmonies less so.” “One astute writer,” commented Harbison, “referred to the piece as ‘scenes from a marriage.' This metaphorical marriage between solo winds and strings contains quarrels, precarious balances, comic relief, misunderstandings, and eventual unanimity.”And, speaking of marriage, Harbison composed the work at Token Creek, in Wisconsin, an unincorporated community near Madison where his wife's family had farmed since the 1920s and where for some 25 years each summer John and Rose Mary Harbison have organized their own mini-Festival of chamber music.
