Angela engages in a heartfelt conversation with Sarah Rusbatch, an expert on women's relationships with alcohol. As Sarah shares her journey of over a thousand days of sobriety, they delve into the concept of "grey area drinking," where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. They also highlight the unique challenges women face, including societal pressures, hormonal influences, and the impact of alcohol on mental health and relationships KEY TAKEAWAYS: Grey area drinking refers to a spectrum of alcohol consumption where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. This includes using alcohol for stress relief or social confidence, leading to a reliance that can affect self-esteem and overall well-being. Women are more vulnerable to the health risks associated with alcohol due to physiological differences, such as lower levels of the enzyme that metabolises alcohol. This can lead to increased risks of alcohol-related diseases, including breast cancer, especially as women age and experience hormonal changes. When individuals stop drinking, it can take up to two years for neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine to rebalance after years of alcohol use. This imbalance can lead to increased anxiety and stress, making it crucial to find alternative ways to manage stress and promote relaxation. Stopping alcohol consumption can create social hurdles, as many individuals find themselves in circles of other drinkers. This can lead to feelings of isolation or fear of being perceived as boring. BEST MOMENTS "Gray area drinking describes the place between someone who rarely drinks and someone who has physical dependency." "I believe alcohol keeps women small and it erodes their self-confidence and their self-belief." "You do need somebody. I always say, don't do it alone." "The irony is most people drink alcohol to relieve their stress." On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Lee Anderson, an experienced Mindset and Wellbeing Coach, he was brought up in and around pubs where drinking was an expectation, having his first drink at 11 years old. Growing up in an environment without a dad meant he was expected to be responsible at an early age and throughout his teens and early twenties alcohol helped suppress his feelings, mask his emotions but also to make him feel more socially confident and accepted. Lee struggled with his sexuality, eventually coming out as gay in his mid twenties, got into a relationship where alcohol was a way of coping with the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour from his then partner. The breakdown of that relationship led to him losing everything he worked hard for and having to move back in with mum. He stopped drinking for a 18 months, met his now husband and outwardly life was good. Drugs and alcohol started to filter back in and life began to unravel, leading to two suicide attempts and eventually a mental breakdown. After relocated to France to start a new life his drinking became heavier and his behaviour was starting to impact his relationship and that was when he decided to go sober and repair his relationship with alcohol, he's been sober for 4 years now and life couldn't be better. He uses his personal and professional experience to coach, educate and support others mentally and emotionally to unlearn learnt behaviours to achieve better for themselves. Lee also hosts his own podcast called The Struggling Mind podcast where he chats to everyday people who have overcome adversity. He's an ambassador for The Lighthouse Charity where he travels the whole of the country delivering talks to people within the construction industry about the free support available from the charity and sharing his story to inspire others to reach out for support.https://www.instagram.com/leeandersoncoaching/https://www.leeandersoncoaching.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/13Hx2VN9L62ta3nMto5NmH?si=d809bf1d488f45f6&nd=1&dlsi=d2719481e12a4154If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. ENG In this episode, Dr. Luke Sniewski, a Wellbeing Coach and Somatic Therapist with a PhD in Psychology and extensive training in Compassionate Inquiry, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and chronic pain rehabilitation, shares how the body holds the key to true transformation, revealing that healing begins not in the mind but in the physical sensations and emotions we experience. We discover how our thoughts follow bodily sensations, and why understanding this connection is crucial for creating authentic change. Through his unique approach, he explores how stillness helps us become aware of our habitual responses and empowers us to make conscious choices in life's challenging moments. Together, we explore the role of pain and discomfort as powerful catalysts for growth. Dr. Sniewski introduces the practice of conscious discomfort, such as cold exposure, sauna, and yin yoga, showing how these experiences teach resilience and foster healing. By embracing discomfort, we can learn to transform pain into a teacher, guiding us toward inner peace and authentic vitality. Prepare to rethink your approach to well-being and discover how the body's wisdom can lead to lasting change and a deeper sense of peace in everyday life.

About Lisa Dahl: Lisa Dahl is a Certified Health and Well-Being Coach specializing in Intuitive Eating, Mindful Eating, and Body Image. In addition, she is also host of the TV show and Podcast, Getting Healthy Without Rules. Her hallmark emphasis on mindfulness and self-compassion helps women find a successful pathway to whole-body wellness. She supports her clients as they discover "Body Peace & Food Freedom" on their journey to break free from dieting and diet culture. Her clients achieve a higher level of well-being as Lisa guides them through visioning, goal setting, and accountability. What We Discuss In This Episode: Become the expert on your own needs and desires instead of following external diet rules. Signs of being negatively affected by diet culture. Body checking and comparing yourself to others. Praising before/after weight loss pictures. Most people regain weight, so "after" pictures are often future "before" pictures. Envying those who restrict food better. Ways to challenge diet culture's influence. Become aware of actions, behaviors, and thoughts. Awareness helps regain power. Create believable new thoughts to replace negative self-talk. Use phrases like "I am learning to appreciate" instead of "I accept" if not yet true. Focus on how activities make you feel good, not how many calories they burn. Body image and age Many regret not improving body image and intuitive eating earlier. It's never too late to start. Health is most important, not weight. Weighing yourself Lisa doesn't weigh clients and suggests throwing the scale out the window. Weighing can be triggering, even for a coach. Think about only allowing measuring weight for true medical need. You can decline weighing at doctor for non-critical reasons. Focus on measuring happiness, anxiety reduction, etc. rather than weight. Intuitive eating tips Ask: "What am I feeling?" and "What do I need?" Name emotions beyond "stressed" or "overwhelmed" using emotion app. Food is the messenger, not the enemy. Meet needs in other ways too.
