In this episode we speak to Susan Laurie and Sober Dave about Sober Code, which launches today! Susan approached us with the idea of Sober Code a few months ago and we immediately said we'd jump on board to help her however we could. The idea of Sober Code is simple: to help protect vulnerable people who may be physically dependent on alcohol. It does this by providing a code of ethics for sober coaches and AF communities to abide by, as well as providing resources and links for those who may be at risk of physical alcohol dependence. We encourage every sober coach or anyone who's involved with AF communities or groups to get in touch with Susan to find out more about Sober Code and how you can show your support: email contact@sobercode.co.uk --- Get In Touch: Of course, you can always get in touch with us (publicly or privately) on our socials - @alcoholfreepod on Instagram, or search for "Over The Influence" on Facebook. Every year around this time, I feel drawn towards talking about sobriety and what's involved in being a non-drinker. In past years I have spoken with well-known specialists such as Mandy Manners, Kate Bailey and Sober Dave, all of which provide deeper insight into becoming alcohol-free. However, this year, and after many requests, I have decided to share a talk with my brother, Kris Lawrence, about our different perspectives on my sobriety. The purpose of this conversation was to offer insight, companionship, support and the challenging emotions surrounding sobriety so that anyone considering experiencing a dry January could take some motivation. On a personal level, this conversation offered me some incredible insight into some of my more significant life events. I would be lying if I didn't confess to feeling uncomfortably vulnerable about releasing this episode as I self-disclose a lot about some very personal moments of my life. That is my hope for this episode is that my experience can offer a helpful perspective on your own experiences. So please enjoy, relax and have a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Highlights:

Following on from  last week's podcast which gave some expert advice on preparing to take a month off drinking, this podcast is all about giving you some valuable tools that you might need to sustain your month off booze.  Now that we've reached the second week of January, it's easy to take a successful first week and tell ourselves it's all about willpower, or luck.  But as Laura says,'You don't need luck to change your drinking, as that implies that willpower and wishful thinking are enough. What you really need is to plan, to learn, to surround yourself with people who are doing something similar. You need to immerse yourself in your intentions.'The key learning here is that everything you learn as you move through your drinking journey, whether it's linear, sporadic, monthly, or several attempts later, improves your self-efficacy and your ability to get back on the horse. This conversation was recorded back in October 2021 as part of our Global Mindful Drinking Festival, and features an expert panel of people who have real life experience of using these tips and tricks to overcome their own problem drinking. The panel is made up of Lisa Ellsworth from Bee Sober, Irene Falcone from Sans Drinks, an Australian alcohol-free bottle shop, drinking coach Sober Dave, and Maz Compton, author, TV & Radio presenter.
