    Discipleship Series: What is the Goodness of God?

    Have you ever blamed God for things that have happened to you?  Been angry with God?  That is something that happens often with people if they haven't thought a lot about the causes of events.  Something bad happens and they immediately, or even for a long time, believe that God did it.  He was out to get them. But when we really stop to consider the causes of events, when we mature in our faith, we come to realize that we're responsible some of the time for bad things happening.  We make bad choices. Or, others may have sinned against us and made bad things happen to us or our loved ones. And finally, if we study the Bible, we'll see that a description of satan and evil spirits is given and that is yet another cause for trouble coming to us.  There is a supernatural realm of evil which we have to deal with and acknowledge as a cause for bad events. When we grow up spiritually and grow up in our thinking, we become able to see that God is our help, "our refuge and strength, and ever present help in  times of trouble." Psalm 46:1.     Grace is a word that people feel they understand, but by their words and actions, it is often clear that they don't.  You see them straining and striving for God's approval.  Or, you see them feeling too unworthy to be loved or needed by God.  Then there is the disapproval and disdain Believers may have for others because of their past lives. Grace is so important to understand and to live out of when you follow Christ.  Therefore, it's a starting place when you are trying to become a more established disciple.  You have to understand how God and the Kingdom of God operate.  It's "Grace City."     Faith Unshakeable: The Fruit of Becoming a Disciple with Deep Roots

    What makes a person able to cling to their faith even when faced with danger and death? In this episode the topic of having "faith unshakeable" is reflected upon. Having visited the Namugongo museum in the country of Uganda, the site of the death of 25 Christian martyrs, Dr. Pam Morrison was deeply moved.  The question arises with such a witness, how did they do it?  These young men were brutally treated, then murdered because they would not give up their faith in Jesus.  What equips a believer to be so strong and so brave?     America and the First Great Awakening with Dr. Eddie Hyatt

    Was America founded in 1619 with the importation of the first slaves?  Is it a hopelessly racist country? This is what the creators of the New York Times 1619 project would have you believe.   Certainly, slavery is a huge blight on America's past, but are they right, that 1619 was our true beginning not 1776? My guest in this podcast, Dr. Eddie Hyatt, would argue that neither date is actually the moment in which our national character was forged.  A Church historian and revival scholar, Eddie says the actual year that would truly shape the American heart and destiny was 1726.  It is the year of the beginning of the First Great Awakening in America. Out of this spiritual revival that swept through the 13 colonies, two things happened - 1) the vision for the nation and its founding documents was greatly touched and shaped by God, and 2) the founders knew they would have to abolish slavery in response to God. Dr. Hyatt has written a book, 1726: The Year that Defined America.  This is an excellent, well-researched, highly acclaimed book about the founding of America, the vision many had for its missionary purpose, and about the faith of the founding fathers.  It is uplifting and hopeful in a time when many are denigrating America.  It is also a portrayal of American history that is increasingly being left out of our textbooks.     What Spiritual Practices will Increase the Anointing of God in Me?

    Many believers have questions about how to have "the anointing," and "how to increase the anointing."  "Do I need to do more prayer and fasting?" they may ask.  "How much?" Those who don't move in charismatic communities might even ask, "What is the anointing?" These are good questions.  Being anointed to do the work of Christ makes that work go so much more easily and be so much more fruitful.  Flowing with God is far more desirable than straining in your own strength.     Hebrews 12:1 tells us that the way we're going to be able to run OUR race is to "throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles." I think we get the idea of the need to rid ourselves of sin.  That's a basic moral idea.  But, what hinders us from moving forward in life?  Often it's our "regrets and remorse," as author Mimika Cooney says, "our poor thinking and attitudes."     You've Prayed for Healing but Nothing Has Changed. What Now?

    Are you someone who has had an illness for a long time?  Do you love someone who has been chronically sick?  Perhaps you have prayed.  You have had whole groups of people praying. This happens to more than a few of us.  It happened to my husband who suffered from cancer 15-16 years.  He has just been declared "cancer free."  We have prayed, taken communion, had groups and groups of people praying for him.  But, we went through years with no relief from cancer until now.  When that happens, why does it happen?  How shall we think about our relationship with God? This is an episode full of joy and encouragement.  We are PRAISING God for His incredible, constant, and awesome goodness.  The years of enduring cancer proved to be very fruitful.  We came through VICTORIOUS.   God will sustain you in whatever hardship you find yourself and you'll be able to say, "The Lord is my Shepherd (too)...Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life.     What is happening at Asbury University? When True Revival Comes

    The chapel at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky is filled with worshippers.  It has been for days.  Revival has broken out.  Students are even bringing mattresses so that they might sleep in the Hughes auditorium.  No one wants to leave the manifest, tangible presence of God. Worship is spontaneous.  One team plays for a while, then others come to take their places so that the music and prayer do not cease.  People are coming from hours away as the news is spreading swiftly across social media.  How hungry so many of us are to feel more of God with us. What are the hallmarks of true revival because sometimes people can simply get carried away with emotion and from being in a crowd.  When God is truly there in the unique way of a revival there is nothing sweeter and that is what should be pursued.     When Feeling Defeated, Jesus Can Heal and Lift You Up

    All of us struggle with feelings of defeat at times.  The way gets too hard.  Too many challenges are in front of us or we feel like we have failed in some way. It isn't God's desire for us to remain in this state of mind.  Scripture has many stories of people who failed or who felt like failures, but God had a different view of them.  One of the classic pictures of our perspective on things colliding with God's is when Gideon was hiding in a winepress threshing wheat, because his people felt so scared of and defeated by the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and said, "Hello, mighty warrior."  Gideon, in his own eyes, was no mighty warrior.  He was a hiding out coward at that moment.  But, God called him out of it and into the one he would become with God's aid.  God can and will do the same for us.     Jesus is the Healer of Our Identity

    When Jesus encounters each of us and we put our faith in Him, He does a marvelous thing.  He utterly transforms us.  He doesn't improve our life.  He takes us from death to life, from being sinner to being saint.  We're given new identity, new purpose, and new power.  Because of Him, we become finally capable of really loving others and ourselves.  This is the good news of the gospel.  Freed from sin and death, in Christ, we become set for eternal life. Many people do not know this.  They need to hear the gospel and experience relationship with Jesus.  Some of them are in churches and do not realize they haven't crossed over from death to life.  There is a real urgency to share the good news of Christ.  We're called to be His witnesses to a hurting world.  He gives us the new identity to enable us to do that.     Sometimes it feels difficult to celebrate Christmas.  The difficulties and even tragedies in our own lives may settle over us with gloom.  The national and world events may seem to grow in darkness.  A week ago, we attended the funeral mass of a friend who died way too soon and at this time, of all times.  Can we overcome the world and still find ourselves singing, "Joy to the World?"  I believe we can. Using the Nativity account from Luke's gospel, this podcast focuses on God's awareness and blessing of the "cast of characters" in the Christmas story.  At the end of this podcast is the account of a pastor from Australia who was taken to heaven.  Prior to God's sudden blessing of him, he felt defeated and forgotten.     Habits, addictions, and attitudes can have a stranglehold on our lives.  They are what is called strongholds and it can seem impossible to get rid of them.  But that is not true.  You can get free even if you have struggled for a long time.  In this podcast, I give the testimony of a friend who had a drinking problem for decades, but she got free of alcohol.  She was motivated by a scary episode of physical pain that made her question the danger her habit put her in.  She is now alcohol free and has been so for a year.  You can lose your strongholds too.     When we stop and consider the implications of the Gospel, it can "take our breath away," to think about the vastness of the love of God for us. The cross of Christ is the greatest emblem of love ever revealed to humanity.  God so loved the world that He sent His only Son. How do we get so we respond to the world as Jesus did to us?  I think of a church leader who once said, "I love God and I love to worship, but I can't stand the people."  Maybe somewhere in your heart, there still lingers disdain for certain types of people with certain types of needs.  Would you like to see that hardness in your own heart finally go away?     When Disappointment Comes, Trust God

    One of the challenges to having a robust, vital faith is the "hard knocks" of life.  We get discouraged, disappointed, and then, the possibility exists to pull away from God. But, we must dig our heels in and say, "No matter what I see, God is good." Declaring this heart attitude, believing in God's goodness, makes possible an exit from troubles with our faith intact.     A number of surveys of Americans are showing that Americans feel despondent, are losing hope; their wages are being overshadowed by the growing cost of living, violence is increasing in cities, and they feel that political conflict is growing. President Biden recently gave a speech about the "Soul of the Nation."  Unfortunately he chose to demonize half the nation's citizens as extremists and a "threat to democracy." For those who feel targeted by his words, what should be your response?  Some fear he is trying to provoke an extreme reaction.  But, so many to whom he is pointing happen to be Christians.  How does Jesus want us to respond to people who make us into enemies?     When the woman touched the hem of Jesus' garment, she was healed physically, mentally, spiritually, socially - it was a total healing of her as a human being. At times, when we hear of people being healed from addiction, if never having come in contact with this affliction, people may be quick to bypass their story. But, people who are set free from addiction are like the woman described in the gospels with the 12 years of bleeding in which she lost everything.  That disease made her unclean, kept her from community, "emptied her wallet," etc. People in addiction are like she was. Those who love addicts often experience not only thwarted efforts at trying to help their loved one, but they may have great financial loss, emotional loss, and even know physical violence. Overdose is now the leading cause of death for those between 18 and 45 years old.  This is not a niche problem, the concern of a minority.  It is a major national tragedy and a further reflection of the spiritual disease that is afflicting America - and many people around the world. The Church has a huge role to play in the healing of sick people - and addicts are sick.  But many churches do not want to connect with people ill with addiction.  "They should get help somewhere else," is the attitude. Today's program is an interview that was previously done with a woman named Jessica Sanders.  Jessica struggled with drugs and jail for 15 years.  But, through relationship with Jesus Christ, she walked away from her illness and her past.  She touched Jesus and became brand new. This is the story of her life and her freedom found through Christ alone.  If you are addicted, there is hope for you.  If you are the parent or another loved one with an addicted family member, there is hope for you and for them.  If you are a church member considering recovery ministry, step out and do it.  You will be part of saving countless precious and beautiful lives like Jessica's.     Bobbi Jo Reed, Founder and Director of the Healing House Addiction Recovery community was my guest in 2020. Her own story of street life and addiction to drugs is shocking.  Her  story was captured in an award-winning documentary called, Under the Influence, that was released after our interview. Bobbi Jo started the Healing House community with one old run-down home in the inner city of Kansas City.  You will hear in this interview how the number of properties and the vision for this community has grown over the years.     Have Christian healing miracles come to an end? Absolutely not!

    There's such a mix of words out there about miraculous healing. Some mock it saying it's all flim flam.  Others can tell you a heart-rending story of how Christians ministering to them in the name of Jesus saved their life.  What does the Bible say? The Bible shows us a powerful connection between heaven and earth as Jesus ministered, and as His disciples ministered.  Matthew 4:23-25 tells us that, "Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.  News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him ALL who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.  Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and the region across the Jordan followed him." This account is marvelous.  Jesus healed all - and not just of minor things but those with major things - demon possession, paralysis, and seizures. The stories of healing by Jesus are incredible and fill the gospel accounts, but there is more.  The disciples received this anointing through their discipling with Jesus and by the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  They carried on the same healings and miracles.     Last week I had the honor of being one of the preachers at the Rekindle the Flame Conference in Athens, Georgia.  This conference is sponsored every year by Rick Bonfim Ministries.  Rick, an evangelist, is originally from Brazil but has lived in the US since his teens.  He is a powerful man of God.  It is a powerful conference. I spoke about what I feel God is bringing in this time - the capacity to know Him more intimately and encounter Him more tangibly and consistently.  For those who hunger for this, this is your time.  It has nothing to do with being well-educated, famous, or equipped with lots of spiritual training (degrees).  It is for the ordinary man, woman and child.     Turning Our Nation Back to God | My Sheep WILL Know My Voice

    Hunger to have our nation ripple with revival from coast to coast fills many hearts.  How can we help in God's sovereign move to draw us back to Him? Is it still possible? Studying historic revivals shows us certain patterns.  The Bible has a verse considered a classic for revival: "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14 Obedience, prayer, and the unity of believers seem to be forefunners of any revival.  Is there more that we can do though God is the author and sustainer of revival?  What is our role as we cry out, "Father, revive us again?"     Sharpening Your Spiritual Eyesight to See Jesus Face to Face

    Experiencing the living Jesus in power and frequency is not just for the spiritual "big league," the people who fill stadiums and publish countless books.  It is for anyone who loves and seeks the Lord.  Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with Me." That invitation is for men, women, and children to encounter Jesus and know Him as friend.  We can have these experiences of encountering the manifest presence of Jesus and have them often.  This episode's topic is about how you can encounter Jesus personally and often. Walter Beuttler was a German born Bible college professor who "personally knew and walked with the Lord as few have." That is a quote from the back of his book, The Manifest Presence of God: My Spiritual Journey.  He wrote about his experiences with the Lord to tantalize his students and everyone else whose life he impacted, to also seek the intimate, personal encounters available with Jesus.  His "testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." Rev. 19:10 Walter travelled to many, many nations to share his experiences of the manifest presence of Jesus and of receiving divine guidance.  Some of his experiences are shared in the podcast.
