A German Lutheran pastor and theologian, he was imprisoned for his opposition to the Nazis during the 1930s and 40s. 80 years on, Bonhoeffer's writings, especially his reflections on the Sermon on the Mount and what this means for discipleship, remain as inspirational as ever. I grew up in a large family, where I was number 5 out of 6; the youngest was my little sister, a pretty, quiet little blonde who went through a several-year period of frailty and illness, which she eventually outgrew. Interestingly, due to her physical condition, she lived with a persistent, irrational fear that our parents were going to die and leave our family without anyone to care for us. She would cling to our mother, day after day, worrying about mom dying and leaving her; she was beside herself! Fortunately, everyone stayed healthy, and she grew up to become strong and outgoing and lived a confident and happy life. I've often thought about her concern for our parents' premature deaths. What was going on with her? Why was she so afraid? And, to be sure, don't many of us live with some nagging fears in the back of our minds that someone might die prematurely? One of the greatest gifts that God has given us through Jesus, in addition to the gift of salvation through the Gospel message, is the conviction that when we die, God will take care of us! This is a gift that literally 'keeps on giving,' as all of us face the possibility of death every day of our lives, even when we don't think about it! Here is one of the passages in the Bible upon which this conviction is based: The scene is focused on Jesus hanging on the cross hours before his death. People are mocking Jesus and taunting him, as is another thief hanging on an adjacent cross. He says to Jesus, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!" In response, a different thief, hanging on another cross, says to him, "Do you not even fear God since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? "And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" Here is Jesus' response to the thief who asked him for help, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." Luke 23:39-43 That is one of the clearest passages in the Bible which speaks of the Christian belief in life after death, "Today, you shall be with me." Jesus, nearing his own death, not only comforts another facing his own mortality, he offers us all lasting words, solace, and hope as we consider our own deaths! We are aware that we shall die at some point in the future, as will everyone! Because of the unknown concerning death, there is an almost unlimited fear and discomfort with this truth, and literally hundreds of differing religious and philosophical notions that deal with the question of "what happens when I die?" But this one passage, spoken by The One whom we believe to be the Son of God, with power, answers clearly, without any details, "Today, you shall be with me in Paradise." The unnamed 'thief on the cross' could face his own death without fear simply because he had expressed his faith in Jesus! He didn't have all the details, to be sure, but Jesus said he would never be alone. Too, Jesus' words communicated no delays or complicated timelines: he would be in paradise "today." And finally, the word paradise conveys an image of a place of peace, rest, and joy. For those with faith in Jesus, life after death will be an eternal gift from God, based on God's love expressed through Jesus on the cross. We do not have to 'earn' this gift; we merely receive it by faith, as did the thief on the cross. Won't you receive Jesus' offer of eternal life today? Trust in him, and live forever! Bible Reading: Psalm 62:6; Matthew 7:24-29Jayce hung up his jacket and walked into the kitchen. "Hi, Mom," he said."Hey, buddy," replied Mom. "Need a glass of milk and a few crackers?"Jayce nodded and plopped down in a chair while his mom poured him some milk. "You're not going to believe what happened to my project today," he said, shaking his head. He grabbed a cracker from a plate on the table. "I worked so hard to create that ancient Mayan city.""Yes, and you did a great job on the temple and palace and all those other buildings," said Mom. "So what happened?""After you dropped me off at school, Ford came over and started asking questions about the project. He was carrying a bowl of water to use on his own project. Before I had two words out of my mouth, someone bumped into Ford, and my Mayan city was hit by a tidal wave!""Oh no!" said Mom."It washed the ground right out from under the main temple," continued Jayce. "When I was working on it a few weeks ago, somebody told me I should use plaster instead of sand for the ground. I should have listened.""Well, I'm sorry your project got messed up," said Mom."Me too," said Jayce. Then he laughed. "But my teacher did say it was the most realistic disaster project she'd ever seen! She told me this should help me remember that things don't last unless they stand on a strong foundation and that sand doesn't make a good foundation for building." Mom nodded. "It reminds me of the Bible passage about the importance of building our lives on Jesus," she said. "If we trust in anything or anyone other than Jesus, it's as though we're building on sand. We need to make Jesus our foundation by trusting Him to save us from sin. Then He will help us build our lives on His truth in the Bible and share His love with others in all we do."Jayce grinned. "So I guess I shouldn't feel too bad. I may have chosen the wrong foundation for my project, but I trust in Jesus, so I have the right one for my life.""Yes," said Mom. "That's much more important!" –Jana WeedHow About You?What foundation are you building your life on? Things like money and popularity come and go, and other people--even those we love and trust--will let us down at times. But Jesus is always good and always faithful. He is the only foundation that will last forever. Begin building your life on Him by trusting in Him today! Today, we're reacting to Daniel Penny's acquittal of all charges for the death of Jordan Neely after the former placed Neely in a chokehold to keep him from harassing other passengers on the subway back in May 2023. The jury found him not guilty of criminally negligent homicide, and we go over the liberal politics of the case's judge and prosecutor, making the jury's decision even more gratifying. Of course, Penny's acquittal didn't stop Black Lives Matter from promptly calling for riots and protests to fight back against "white supremacy." On a much lighter note, we then talk about U.K. soccer player Marc Guéhi writing "I love Jesus" and "Jesus loves you" on his league-issued LGBT rainbow armband, as well as Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson giving the glory to Jesus in a postgame interview after the Boise State Broncos won the Mountain West Conference Championship. Happy Advent! Today is the First Sunday of Advent, the first Sunday in the new church year. The word advent means coming. During the season of Advent we prepare for the coming of The One. Who is The One? Is it Santa Claus? No. That's a different kind of advent. Santa Claus is coming to town, but that is not the advent we are talking about. The One we are preparing for is Jesus, the Christ. Listen to or read Bingham's entire sermon by clicking “Read More.”

Be With Jesus Today (Chris Logan) - September 29, 2024 by Bethany Covenant Church
Yes, we need Jesus to save us and whisk us off to glory some day. But do we need Jesus TOday?
Being more like Jesus today means less like the “old, sinful flesh” less like the old man which is corrupt with deceitful lusts and more like the new man which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Who will you be more like today, Christian? Like the old, sinful, carnal unsaved you, or like the Godly, compassionate, holy Savior of your soul? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/encouragingchristians/support
Luke gives more details and specifics about the actual birth of the Lord Jesus than any other of the Gospel writers. Most of our Christmas stories and songs seem to come especially from Luke chapter 2. This chapter opens up the events of the most holy night in human history. My favorite Christmas song is “O Holy Night”, and my favorite solo singer of it is Chaplain Shawn Taylor! I have so many great memories of Pastor Shawn singing this sacred song every Christmas Eve to close our service. Remember this first verse: O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Savior's birth Long lay the world in sin and error pining 'Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on your knees; O hear the Angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born O night, O Holy night, O night divine! And what a night it was, when God robes Himself in human flesh and is born into this world as an infant baby through the virgin Mary in a dirty dingy stable inside the little village of Bethlehem! Yesterday we talked about Joseph and Mary traveling some eighty plus miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem because of the required Roman census. Then sadly, even though Mary was about to give birth, there was “no room” for them in the inn. No room in the inn for Jesus to be born is strangely prophetic of the reception He was to have as the Savior of the world. Remember John 1:10-12, “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name”. As I think of how when Jesus came to earth in His birth, and there was no room for Him then, I can't help but notice there is still no room for Jesus in most or our world and lives today! We are told that there is a place for everything. But what place has Jesus in politics, in government, in media, in our schools and education today? What place has Jesus in our businesses, in our culture, in our society, in our homes, or even in our own personal lives? And honestly, I'm not so sure that there is a place for Jesus in most of our churches today! It seems that we make a place for everything else and then tack Jesus on with His name, or a crucifix around our neck. Jesus said, that “the Son of Man has no where to lay His head” (Matthew 8:20). And sadly, even most Christians can't make room for Jesus in their lives. We prove this when we don't take the time to read our Bibles each day. When we don't spend time in prayer and communion with the Lord. When we don't take the time and effort to attend church on Sundays with other believers, the church that Jesus loves and gave Himself for (Ephesians 5:25). When we don't take time to witness to our family, friends and neighbors, or serve Him in some capacity in our church or community. We don't make room for Jesus with our money. We don't give anything to sustain and grow His church. We don't give anything for missions so that people who have never heard the name of Jesus can get an opportunity to be saved from their sins and not spend an eternity separated from Him. How sad it is that we are still not making room for Jesus in our own lives and hearts! Jesus is the last person we run to when we desperately need help with something in our life or family. We put in our quarter like Jesus is a “Jack in the box” that will pop out and rescue us from a current issue or problem that we are having. How sad! It is my prayer that today the Holy Spirit will speak to many of our hearts, and we will ask for His forgiveness and determine to make Jesus the Lord of our lives and give Him His rightful place in our lives! When Jesus shows up, His glory shows up, just like it did with the angels on that Holy Night two-thousand years ago! God bless

Sometimes we're all guilty of overthinking it and making our own lives too hard. Maybe we even do it with our relationship with Jesus. In general conference, Elder Renlund shared words that helped to dial in our focus from his talk, “Jesus Christ is the Treasure.” This episode discusses seeing Jesus for who He is. Far too many Christians still picture Jesus as that baby in the manger, or as the gentle rabbi walking through the countryside of Israel with His disciples. But Rev. Ch. 1 paints a very different picture of what Jesus looks like today. Let's see what the Bible has to say about the present ministry of Jesus!
