Many of us are caught in a loop of instant gratification, driven by the brain's reward system. In this episode, host Cristina Quinn talks with psychiatrist and addiction expert Anna Lembke about how to break free from compulsive digital habits and reset our dopamine levels.Anna explains how our brains become desensitized to pleasure over time, making us crave more and more stimulation. The good news? A 30-day “abstinence trial” can help reset our baseline and bring our dopamine levels back into balance. But quitting isn't easy — temporary withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, irritability and boredom often surface before things improve.Through her own experience overcoming an unexpected addiction, Anna shares strategies to resist temptation, set up barriers to consumption and replace addictive behaviors with more fulfilling activities.Reclaiming our attention isn't just about cutting back — it's about learning to be present, engage with the world around us and rediscover what truly brings us joy.Subscribe to The Washington Post or connect your subscription in Apple Podcasts.

Weightloss Mindset

Send us a textShow NotesSummary:In this episode of The Weight Loss Mindset Podcast, we explore how to regain control over food cravings by understanding the brain's reward system. The episode offers insights into how cravings are not a personal failing but a natural brain response, and it provides strategies for rewiring your brain to foster healthier eating habits. Through neuroplasticity, mindful eating, and strategic planning, listeners can achieve a balanced relationship with food that promotes both physical and emotional well-being.Key Takeaways:Cravings and the Brain: Cravings are a natural result of the brain's design to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Our modern food environment amplifies these cravings, but understanding this can help alleviate guilt and frustration.  The Restriction Trap: Labeling food as “off-limits” can intensify cravings. Instead of strict restrictions, view all food as neutral and focus on balance and moderation.  Emotional Eating Awareness: Emotional eating is not just about physical hunger but often a response to stress or loneliness. Recognizing emotional triggers is crucial for breaking the cycle and finding healthier coping mechanisms.  Mindful Eating Practices: Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the eating experience, helping to reconnect with the body's hunger and fullness cues, leading to more satisfying and less impulsive eating habits.  Rewiring Preferences: Gradually introduce more nutrient-dense foods by pairing them with favorites and being consistent. Over time, the brain can learn to enjoy healthier options as taste preferences adapt.  Power of Planning: Effective planning and preparation can make healthy eating more accessible and less reliant on willpower. Having pre-prepared healthy options can increase the likelihood of making nutritious choices. Ready to transform your relationship with food? Start by implementing one mindful eating practice this week and prepare a few healthy meals in advance. Share your progress with us on social media. Remember, every small step counts towards a healthier, happier you. Tune in next week for more actionable insights on living well!

The Energy sector is warning gas supply woes are not going away. Electricity companies are worried the winter gas shortage is not yet a thing of the past, with an even bigger problem bubbling under the surface for next year. Octopus Energy want to introduce a reward system, where they pay customers to reduce their usage during peak times. They say if 20% of kiwis participated in an hour-long session, it would save the equivalent of 122,000 warm wash cycles. Chief Operating Officer Margaret Cooney tells Tim Beveridge New Zealand is “pretty much matched in terms of the demand and supply available”. This leads to challenges if things go wrong, and in meeting peak demand periods during winter. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The theme of treats and rewards is coming up in a lot of my conversations right now…with my coaching clients, with people who have reached out to talk about working together, even with my friends and colleagues. Specifically, using food as a treat or reward. This is something a lot of us have learned to do. And like any highly rewarding behavior, this habit has the potential to do harm…and can be surprisingly hard to break. In this episode, we're going to talk about cultivating new sources of reward and pleasure — ones that make our lives richer, and don't have unintended consequences. I'll also share three ways that being more intentional about treats can increase the pleasure you get from them–as well as strengthening your willpower. Key Takeaways: Treats and rewards add pleasure and enjoyment to life. However, we need to be intentional and thoughtful about them. Planning your treats offers several advantages, including increased enjoyment through anticipation and improved restraint against unplanned indulgences. Cultivating awareness and anticipation of treats in your life can counter feelings of deprivation and resentment, making your pursuit of healthier habits more enjoyable Develop and maintain a list of activities that genuinely reward you. Include both small and big pleasures. Consider also the costs of each treat. Does indulging in this treat bring you closer to or further from your goal? GYLTG 200: Why You Must Celebrate the Small Stuff: A Mindset Reset

Your mind is a thought machine. Your emotions are its support system. They work together to create action. And yet, no matter what you've thought in the past or even uttered, the phrase and thought pattern of “It is what it is” is both flat wrong and oddly true, all at the same time! “It is what it is” discounts the fact that your brain is not preset upon arrival, and every time you do something new, your brain shifts and changes. When we witness these changes, our most significant gains are created. Before we dive into the question that inspired this mindset reset, I must use the power of pause and celebrate to say thank you! This conversation marks the 200th episode here on the podcast. I cannot thank you enough for listening and being a valuable part of this community. It means the world to me and those who work to bring you weekly conversations and ways to move forward in your life. Now, let's get to it. Bonnie from Seattle, Washington, wrote, "Danielle, I am hoping you can help me. My partner and I were having a conversation about not being where we want to be just yet. He has a different mindset than I do. He is much more relaxed and I am much more focused on getting to the next level. He says I'm missing the journey. I say that cliché. Is it really that important to celebrate the small stuff? I know you talk about being present, intentional, and mindful, but does all that stuff really make a difference? I think I'm asking you to convince me I'm right and he is wrong. Is that bad?” Bonnie, great question. And I hate to tell you this, but he's right.   Let's talk about why he is right and open the mind to celebrating every small victory, no matter how small. The truth is your brain loves reward! It's wired for reward. And yet, it also has a default that is built in to remember more negatives than positives. It's called a negativity bias. Why do we have this? To help us remain safe in all situations. With both a reward system that needs to be activated and a negative bias—remembering the positives takes extra effort. “It is what it is,” see what I'm saying. When you do something, big or small, and you celebrate the hell out of it, the brain literally eats it up! It fires off feel-good chemicals – dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. It's that explosion of happiness we feel. When that happens, it also lowers damaging cortisol levels and calms the brain's amygdala.
