Realtalk from Gill: I've been at a serious crossroads about which path to take next in my career. It can be easy to feel trapped in one lane, stuck where you are, or like you have to choose only one thing to focus on if you want to be successful. But choosing something now, doesn't mean you're resigned to that one thing forever. Everything you do is cumulative action towards where you want to end up. Life is a long zig-zagging road, and it's okay to pivot and try new routes along the way. And no one has exemplified how to reinvent yourself and pivot your career again and again more than today's guest, Keltie Knight. Keltie is a three-time Emmy Award winning television personality, podcaster, A New York Times bestselling author, and former professional dancer. She started her career as a dancer and danced in the Radio City Rockettes, in music videos for musicians like John Legend, and as a backup dancer for Beyonce and Taylor Swift, NBD. She pivoted into television as a host, working on Entertainment Tonight and E! News, and covering huge events like The Grammys Red Carpet. She's the co-host and creator of one of the top 100 podcasts in the world, The LADYGANG podcast, which she transformed into a TV show and a bestselling book, Act Like A Lady. And now, she has just launched her new CBS primetime show, Superfan, for which she's the creator, executive producer, and host. Join us as we chat about:The key to reinventing yourself and leaning into career pivotsReverse engineering your dreams and goals VS staying flexible and open to opportunitiesHow to know when it's time to move on to a new project or pivot into a new career eraHow to handle rejection and bounce back from negative feedbackWhat to do when you're categorized and expected to “stay in your lane” The benefit of having multiple jobs or projects on the goThe power of staying unattached to outcomes and just making shit happen How to stay focused with your pursuits when you're a multi-hyphenate person with lots of interests and passionsWe hope this episode inspires you to swing big and pursue all of your passions, because as per Ross Geller, you can always pivot along the way. Welcome back for another episode of Nick's Non-fiction with your host Nick Muniz (Announcement: The full hour has been restored. Part 2 is 100% free of thought.) Steve Harvey can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years; the many incredible women who can run a business, have three kids, maintain a household in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. So when it comes to relationships, why can't these same women figure out what makes men commit? According to Steve, it's because they're asking other women for advice when they should be going directly to the source. This bad boy was formerly sealed away in the vault, just for Patrons, but enough time has passed that we think the public deserves to see the final part of the Steve Harvey epic saga. Thrill and chill as Steve Harvey explains to women how to act to convince men they're worthy of value, using the tortured metaphor of sports fish versus keepers. Don't go anywhere though, as he follows that with his uncomfortable revelation that women should constantly bend over backwards to appeal to the fragile ego of their male partners, even if they're the sole provider in a household. None of this is really a departure from his sexist stances in prior chapters, but boy, he lays it on thick as we approach the end of the ALaLTLaM saga. You know, Naomi and Joel had a little intrepidation about writing a dating advice book, but Steve Harvey's work has really helped our confidence. Guess it's not all bad, huh?We refuse to provide links to Steve Harvey's books on this podcast. This week, Kate discusses the world of dating advice, both interpersonal and professional, from the books she read in her single days like Why Men Love Bitches, He's Just Not That Into You, and other best-sellers like Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man or The Rules. She also discusses the confusing nature of casual advice we give our peers and loved ones that can be grounded in anecdote despite being delivered as gospel, causing us to weigh the subjective input of others far too heavily on important matters that impact our personal lives. She also discusses how sociopolitical climates influence generational beliefs about relationships and marriage, and how those tropes and cliches taught to young people infiltrate current generations with irrelevant advice about gender roles that deserve a great deal of nuance and free will to be applied to your circumstances (e.g. why buy the cow). Then, since Kate went to California last minute to have a bday drink with her sister, she asks Kelly to chime in as they read listener-submitted examples of advice Beths said their well-intentioned loved ones incessant provide about dating that they find dismissive, condescending, cliche, and/or sexist as single women. This episode is not designed to give advice but to help us all be better friends by analyzing the nature of unproductive input. And we're back, blah blah blah, more Steve Harvey, you get the spiel. We go for another dip into the misogynistic and deeply confusing dating advice of Steve Harvey. Joel and Naomi talk about Steve's view that all men need is "Support, Love, and the Cookie," how men hate small talk and women concern themselves far too much with minutia, why women need to understand that all men approaching them only want sex, how men only respect women who set standards, questions Steve thinks will conclusively determine if you should continue dating someone, and the "Ninety Day Rule." It's all bad, folks, but we get some good laughs out as well as some good discussion about why multimillionaires shouldn't be writing advice books of any kind. Some people have said we're doing too many book episodes and not enough dating episodes. We pondered that, mulled it over for a few weeks, and decided to take that to heart by combining a book on dating advice with actual conversation about dating standards. And the results were...not good.Steve Harvey makes his first appearance on our podcast, by virtue of his poorly named "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man." In it, he tells women the true secrets of the male mindset and gives them the information he thinks they need to know to succeed while dating. And that advice? Pretty darn misogynistic, kinda racist at times, and certainly not worthy of the 64 weeks it spent on the NYT best seller list. Joel and Naomi tackle the first third of the book, confronting such bold statements as "men are simple beings," men won't love anyone until they feel successful," and men only show love by "professing, providing, and protecting" those they care about. Good, intelligent stuff all around and well worth a listen. We refuse to provide links to Steve Harvey's books on this podcast. Go support your library if reading it means so much to you.
