This Day in Legal History: Jack Ruby ConvictedOn March 14, 1964, Jack Ruby was convicted of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner, had shot Oswald on live television two days after Kennedy's assassination, as police were transferring Oswald from the city jail. The highly publicized trial concluded with a guilty verdict, and Ruby was sentenced to death. However, in 1966, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned the conviction, ruling that improper testimony had been admitted and that the trial should not have taken place in Dallas, where impartiality was questionable. A retrial was ordered, but before it could proceed, Ruby died of lung cancer on January 3, 1967. His actions and their legal consequences remain a topic of debate, with some believing he was motivated by grief and others suspecting a broader conspiracy.Ruby testified before the Warren Commission in July 1964, providing a rambling account of his mental state and possible connections to figures of interest. Arlen Specter, a future U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, was among those questioning him. The case highlighted due process concerns, particularly regarding venue changes in high-profile trials, and underscored the legal system's challenges in handling emotionally charged cases with national significance. Two federal judges, one in Maryland and another in California, have ordered the Trump administration to reinstate thousands of probationary federal workers who were fired as part of a sweeping effort to shrink the government. The rulings represent the most significant legal challenge yet to Trump and adviser Elon Musk's aggressive push to cut federal jobs. The Maryland case, led by 20 Democratic-led states, targeted 18 agencies accused of unlawfully dismissing workers without following required procedures. Judge James Bredar ruled that the firings amounted to mass layoffs requiring prior notice to state governments. In California, Judge William Alsup reached a similar conclusion, ordering reinstatement for workers at six agencies, including the Department of Defense. He criticized the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for directing agencies to fire workers en masse without legal authority. The Trump administration argues that probationary employees have few job protections and can be terminated for nearly any reason. However, Democratic-led states claim the firings violated regulations requiring agencies to provide 60 days' notice before mass layoffs. At least 24,000 probationary workers have been fired since Trump returned to office, affecting agencies such as the EPA, Department of Education, and Homeland Security. The Merit Systems Protection Board has also intervened, recently ordering the Agriculture Department to temporarily reinstate nearly 6,000 workers. Meanwhile, unions and advocacy groups continue legal efforts to block further terminations, with the American Federation of Government Employees calling the rulings a victory against an administration aiming to cripple federal agencies. The Trump administration has vowed to fight back against the court orders, arguing they undermine presidential authority.Fired Workers at 18 Agencies Reinstated in Court Blow to TrumpUS judges order Trump administration to reinstate thousands of fired workersColumbia University has issued severe punishments to students involved in a pro-Palestinian protest that occupied a campus building last spring, including expulsions and temporary degree revocations. The announcement follows the Trump administration's decision to cancel $400 million in federal funding to the university, citing an inadequate response to antisemitism. Interim President Katrina Armstrong acknowledged the government's concerns and pledged cooperation. However, the university has not disclosed the number of students disciplined, nor their identities, citing privacy laws.Critics argue the crackdown is politically motivated, particularly since the expelled student union president, Grant Miner, was removed just before contract negotiations with the university. The Trump administration has escalated its efforts against what it labels "pro-Hamas" protests, detaining Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil, a protest leader, for deportation—though a federal judge has temporarily blocked the move. These actions raise serious concerns about the suppression of campus activism and whether the university's response was driven by financial and political pressure rather than an impartial disciplinary process.Columbia's handling of the protests appears to be shaped more by government pressure than by a genuine commitment to campus safety or free speech. The timing of expulsions, particularly targeting a union leader, suggests a broader effort to stifle dissent rather than uphold academic integrity. The federal crackdown on protesters further complicates the situation, blurring the line between addressing antisemitism and suppressing legitimate political expression.Columbia University punishes pro-Palestinian protesters who occupied building | ReutersNewsmax has paid $40 million to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by Smartmatic over false claims that the company helped rig the 2020 U.S. election for Joe Biden. The settlement was reached privately last year, but the amount was disclosed in a recent investor filing. Smartmatic sued Newsmax in 2021, alleging the network knowingly spread misinformation, falsely stating that its machines were hacked and that it was backed by corrupt regimes. Newsmax defended its reporting as protected by the First Amendment but later clarified its coverage and invited Smartmatic to respond on air, an offer Smartmatic declined.Smartmatic had initially sought between $400 million and $600 million in damages. Meanwhile, the company continues its $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News, following a historic $787.5 million settlement Fox paid to Dominion Voting Systems. The Newsmax case underscores the financial and legal consequences media outlets face for amplifying election misinformation, particularly when it leads to measurable reputational and financial harm.Newsmax paid $40 million to settle defamation suit over US 2020 election claims | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Hector BerliozOn this day in 1869, French composer Hector Berlioz passed away, leaving behind a legacy of bold orchestration, vivid storytelling, and groundbreaking compositions that pushed Romantic music to new heights. Born in 1803, Berlioz defied his family's wishes for him to become a doctor, instead immersing himself in the world of music, where his dramatic flair and innovative techniques set him apart. He was a master of programmatic music, crafting works that told intense, almost cinematic stories through sound. His most famous composition, Symphonie Fantastique, is a perfect example of this. Written in 1830, the symphony follows a tormented artist haunted by unrequited love, spiraling into madness and hallucination. The final movement, “Dreams of a Witches' Sabbath,” is a feverish nightmare of swirling strings, eerie bells, and grotesque dance rhythms, as the protagonist imagines his own funeral turned into a macabre celebration. The piece is filled with dark energy, blending horror and exhilaration in a way that was revolutionary for its time.Berlioz's influence stretched far beyond his own era, inspiring composers like Wagner, Mahler, and even film composers of the 20th century. Though he struggled for recognition during his lifetime, often facing resistance from conservative critics, his music eventually gained the admiration it deserved. His orchestral mastery and fearless storytelling continue to captivate listeners today. To close this week, we leave you with the chilling and electrifying "Dream of a Witches' Sabbath" from Symphonie Fantastique, a piece that perfectly embodies Berlioz's genius for the dramatic and the surreal.Without further ado, Hector Berlioz's “Dreams of a Witches Sabbath” from his Symphonie Fantastique. They're going back and scrubbing articles that are years old—editing, changing them.” He continues, “In Pennsylvania they did this last time. Remember the 2020 Democrat Primary, Kamala Harris and everyone else on the stage raised their hand, they were going to ban fracking. Joe Biden said the same exact thing. And then they get to the debate with Trump: ‘I would never do that'—because they understand it would hurt them in Pennsylvania. Then on day one they banned the Key Stone pipeline. They'll tell you whatever they need to tell you to get your vote and then they'll do the opposite.” Plus, Don Jr. answers the most important question: what's the best cheese for a cheesesteak? 5:45pm- According to reports, Independent Presidential candidate Robert F. This Day in Legal History: Jack Ruby Convicted of Murder of Lee OswaldOn this day in legal history, March 14, 1964, marks a pivotal moment when nightclub owner Jack Ruby was convicted for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy. The event unfolded in Dallas, Texas, where Ruby, in a shocking act caught on live television, fatally shot Oswald just two days after Kennedy's assassination. This act catapulted Ruby from obscurity to infamy, intertwining his fate with one of the most significant and tragic events in American history.Ruby's conviction led to a death sentence, a verdict that ignited a storm of controversy and conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination. However, the legal saga did not conclude with this conviction. In October 1966, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned Ruby's conviction, citing errors in the admission of testimony and the selection of Dallas as the venue for the trial. The court's decision for a retrial aimed to address these procedural missteps, yet Ruby would never face his second day in court; he died in January 1967 from a pulmonary embolism while awaiting the new trial. This case also shone a spotlight on the workings of the American legal system and its challenges in high-profile cases. Notably, Ruby's 1964 testimony before the Warren Commission, which investigated President Kennedy's assassination, added layers to the public's understanding of the events leading to Kennedy's death. Arlen Specter, then Assistant Counsel for the Commission and later a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, played a significant role in questioning Ruby. Specter's involvement in the commission and his subsequent political career kept the Ruby case and the broader Kennedy assassination narrative in the public discourse for decades.Jack Ruby's conviction and the ensuing legal battles highlight the complexities of justice and the enduring quest for truth in the aftermath of national tragedy. The events of March 14, 1964, remain a critical chapter in the legal and historical examination of the Kennedy assassination, reflecting on the broader themes of law, politics, and society in America.Donald Trump's legal team is poised to request a federal judge in Fort Pierce, Florida, to dismiss a case accusing the former president of unlawfully retaining classified documents after his presidency. Scheduled for Thursday, this hearing is part of Trump's broader strategy to confront four criminal cases amidst his campaign against Joe Biden for the upcoming U.S. election. Trump, pleading not guilty, faces a 40-count indictment for keeping sensitive national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructing efforts to reclaim them. His defense is expected to argue that he had the right to classify these documents as "personal," challenging the prosecution's stance that materials concerning nuclear capabilities and national defense cannot be deemed personal.Prosecutors, led by U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith, contest Trump's claim, emphasizing the illegality of his actions. The defense also plans to criticize the vagueness of the charges, especially regarding the illegal retention of national defense information, as it pertains to a former president. Additionally, Trump's team will present arguments on presidential immunity and the alleged selective prosecution compared to other officials who have retained classified records.Significant attention will focus on Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, and her response to these arguments, especially given her previous rulings in Trump's favor and subsequent criticism from a federal appeals court. The trial's timing is in flux, with discussions on postponing the scheduled May start, while Trump proposes a delay until after the November election, hinting at the potential to dismiss federal cases if re-elected.The outcome of this hearing could have substantial implications for Trump's legal battles, including other cases regarding election interference and the New York state charges involving payments to Stormy Daniels, further complicating his political and legal landscape.Trump to tell judge that keeping classified records was legal | ReutersDraftWise, a legal technology startup specializing in AI-powered contract tools for lawyers, announced a significant milestone in securing a $20 million Series A funding round led by Index Ventures. This latest financial infusion, with contributions from existing investors Y Combinator and Earlybird Digital East Ventures, underscores the burgeoning investor interest in AI applications within the legal sector. The New York-based company, founded by ex-Palantir engineers and a former Clifford Chance lawyer, has carved a niche in the legal tech market by enhancing contract drafting and negotiation processes with AI.Since its inception in the summer of 2020 as part of the Y Combinator startup incubator, DraftWise has distinguished itself by leveraging law firms' historical data and unique insights to refine contract customization. The company emphasizes a data-first approach over solely focusing on AI, which has allowed them to incorporate generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to further aid lawyers in their work. This strategy has enabled DraftWise to cater to notable law firm clients, including Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe and Mishcon de Reya, among others, reflecting its growing influence in the legal tech space. The cost of DraftWise's services varies depending on the size and needs of the law firm, offering a flexible solution to improve legal operations. As legal technology continues to evolve, DraftWise's successful funding round represents a key development in the industry's efforts to harness AI for enhancing legal expertise and efficiency. This trend is further evidenced by other legal tech companies, such as Spellbook and Robin AI, securing funding, highlighting the sector's rapid growth and the increasing value placed on AI-driven legal tools.Legal contracts company DraftWise raises $20 mln amid AI investment boom | ReutersMicrosoft has reached a settlement in a patent infringement lawsuit initiated by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) concerning Wi-Fi technology, a dispute that echoes a prior case where Caltech secured a billion-dollar jury verdict against Apple and Broadcom for infringing similar patents. The resolution was communicated to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, with both parties requesting a pause in the proceedings to finalize their agreement. Specific details of the settlement are yet undisclosed, with Caltech and Microsoft maintaining silence on the matter. The lawsuit accused Microsoft of violating Caltech's patents through its Surface tablets and laptops, as well as Xbox video game systems, a claim Microsoft contested by denying the allegations, challenging the patent validity, and asserting existing licenses for the disputed technologies. This legal battle follows a notable 2020 verdict where Caltech was awarded $1.1 billion in damages from Apple and Broadcom for similar patent infringements, a decision later overturned by an appeals court mandating a new trial for damages assessment. Subsequently, Caltech settled its dispute with Apple and Broadcom last year. Moreover, Caltech has initiated lawsuits against other tech giants, including HP Inc and Dell, for infringing the same Wi-Fi patents, indicating a broader legal strategy to protect its intellectual property rights. These ongoing cases underscore the complexity and high stakes of patent litigation within the tech industry, particularly concerning foundational technologies like Wi-Fi. The Microsoft settlement marks the latest chapter in Caltech's assertive enforcement of its patent portfolio, reflecting both the value and contentious nature of intellectual property in the tech sector.Microsoft settles Caltech lawsuit over Wi-Fi technology | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Just kidding we couldn't possibly answer a question that big in one show. Or one lifetime. But, in this first episode of Jew-ish, Rabbi Susan Shankman, Senior Rabbi of Washington Hebrew Congregation, will take our hand, and walk us through some of the basics, just in time for the end of Jewish American Heritage Month! We'll cover things like whatever the heck “identity and culture” is, to the formulaic structures of prayer, to things you've possibly never heard of (oh you've heard of keva and kavanah? Suuuuure..), and do some deeper dives into things you maybe thought you knew.  And, there's a glossary below of terms you may hear in the show. We'll cover some lighter fare, too of course, like what it really means to be “the Chosen People” (it's probably not what you think) and how to repair all that is broken in the world. Ok but really, don't worry, there will be giggles, and hopefully I didn't say anything my mother is going to call me about.GLOSSARY:Beshert: a Yiddish word meaning “destiny.” It's often used to talk about soulmates but works for anything that's “fated.” Torah: The first five books of the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament (AKA Pentateuch) Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. A physical Torah is a two-handled scroll on kosher animal hide parchment, hand-lettered by a trained scribe, and kept in the ark of a synagogue. Bimah: also spelled bima, the raised platform from which services are led and the Torah is read.Ark: also known as the Aron HaKodesh, the ark houses the Torah at the front of the synagogue and is usually ornately decorated and accompanied by an “eternal light,” or “ner tamid”  Confirmation: a ceremony primarily in Reform Jewish tradition for high-school age kids, usually in 10th grade, age 16-17, marking the end of their “formal” Jewish education and reaffirming their commitment as “adults” to Jewish learning and living.Bar/Bat/B'nai Mitzvah: the name for both the ceremony, and what a person becomes (“bar” for boys, meaning son, “bat” for girls, meaning daughter, “b'nai” is plural) when they have “come of age” in Judaism and lead a Torah service for the first time. Shul: a Yiddish word meaning “school” used interchangeably for “synagogue” and “temple” for the place of worship and learning in Judaism. Pirkei Avot: Translated at the “Ethics of the Fathers” or “Chapters of the Fathers”, this is a collection of writings on ethics and education from great rabbis in history. It is part of the “Mishnah,” the code of Jewish law compiled in the early third century C.E.A note on Jewish American Heritage Month: The month was first designated in 2006 by President George W. Bush, after the efforts of the Jewish American Heritage Month Coalition, and passage of a 2005 resolution introduced by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of FL and Sen. Arlen Specter of PA. Since then, presidents have made annual proclamations recognizing the designation and contributions of American Jews. Read President Joe Biden's 2023 proclamation here, and learn more at the official website here. A note on Washington Hebrew Congregation: Rabbi Shankman was unable to comment on events surrounding the Edlavitch-Tyser Early Childhood Center, but the congregation has a statement, Support the showLike the show? Support it! Or don't, that's cool too. Just glad you're here! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2196108/supporters/new

In addition to his years helping elect Democrats at all levels, he caddies on the PGA tour for golfing legends including Tom Watson. Timothy Welbeck is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University. A Civil Rights Attorney by training, Timothy is a scholar of law, race, and cultural studies. He earned his J.D. from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and his B.A. from Morehouse College. Timothy's scholarly work focuses on contemporary issues of racial identity in America, the intersection of racial classifications and the law in the American context, contemporary African and African American cultural transmissions, retentions, expressions and evolutions, hip-hop as a microcosm of the Black experience, etc. Timothy's forthcoming book “No City for Young Men: Hip-Hop and the Narrative of Marginalization,” explores how hip-hop communicates the lived experience of persons who live in urban centers across the nation, particularly Black men living in major cities. Timothy has also written several peer-reviewed journal articles including “Specter of Reform: The late Sen. Arlen Specter's Criminal Justice Reform, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, and its Role in Expanding the Modern Prison Industrial Complex,” explores the impact of the infamous 1994 Crime Bill in providing the infrastructure for mass incarceration within the United States. The research, funded by the Arlen Specter Center fellowship, examines how the federalization of criminal law, pursuant to the Commerce Clause, has led to expansive growth in federal law enforcement, imprisonment, and thus setting the foundation for the modern carceral state. Timothy's article “People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths to Rhythms: Hip-Hop's Continuation of the Enduring Tradition of African and African-American Rhetorical Forms and Tropes,” examines hip-hop's continuation of centuries-old African cultural norms and aesthetic values. It also adopted an Africological approach to provide a foundation for establishing hip-hop's African origins and its manifestation of African cultural transmissions. Timothy's work has appeared in various media outlets, such as the BBC Radio 4, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, NPR, The Huffington Post, The North Star, REVOLT TV, et al. Welcome back and thank you for tuning into Divulgence with host Jordan Vezeau. For this episode, I welcome back author Donald Jeffries and author/investigator/filmmaker William Ramsey to discuss United States Presidents and their widely unknown and widely overlooked body counts (and plenty of other questionable behaviour)! The thought alone of a President of the U.S. having a body count is wild, never mind nearly all of them having one!  Our discussion essentially revolves around these select ‘chosen ones' that have these ‘guardian angels' protecting them and ensuring they progress and proceed.  We review your absolute favourite presidents, including Bush Sr. and Jr., the Clinton Machine, FDR, LBJ, and yes, Obama; we observe how they have killed more people than organized crime and the tolerance that we hold for political leaders (one that continues to grow, along with their power, as they continue to push the line on what they can do and we allow them with the leniency we give and the blinders we install on ourselves). This allows the paving way for oligarchical power that we already are witnessing today. As we explain, there are many examples of the United States taking up the old ways of Ancient Rome! Don and Bill come in and drop more bombs than Obama on this one, so be prepared for fire! I learn of some cases I had never heard of myself, including one involving Orson Welles and a Sirhan Sirhan movie he wanted to make, another with the ‘Boys on the Tracks' that is part of the Clinton count, and finally Clinton's mom (Yes, his mom may have had a body count!).  I am very excited as William shares his stories and experiences of his days working as a lawyer in Washington, D.C. during the time of the Vince Foster death! We also discuss rigged elections and how they may have become the global norm and so many more interesting topics, including the Black Bill Clinton, Arlen Specter (the guy who gave the single magic bullet theory in the JFK case!), pick-up habits and tastes: Clinton vs. Kennedy, and take some time to give a shout out and tribute to the great Norm Macdonald. As a Canadian, and a loyal die-hard comedy fan/eventual aspiring comedian, it hit hard hearing the news about ol' Norm, RIP buddy.  We absolutely talk about a lot of different and wild stuff in this episode, it is a non-stop ride for sure. Pleas enjoy, but relax! If there is stuff you have never heard before or may not necessarily agree with (I know there will be), just breathe! As with every topic I present to you, I urge you to search for yourself, and more importantly, SHARE the information and please share this podcast; Divulgence of the truth!Resources: DIVULGENCEYOUTUBE - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCStiGMkq3vDyOU6AW6DyvMgTWITTER - @divulgencepodINSTAGRAM - @divulgencepodFACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/Divulgence-102662585502733 BUY ME A COFFEE – https://buymeacoffee.com/divulgencepodPodcast available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Amazon Music, Stitcher, Pandora. From his early work as a lawyer on the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to his days as Philadelphia's district attorney to his thirty-year career as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter found himself consistently in the middle of major historical events. During his five terms as senator, Specter met with the likes of Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat and Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro and made significant contributions during the fallout of both the Iran-Contra scandal and the Clinton impeachment. His work had a profound influence on the configuration of the United States Supreme Court, the criminal justice system, LGBTQ rights, and stem cell research. Photographs from Specter's personal collection highlight many of these key moments, revealing the rich narrative not only of one man's political career, but how it helped shape a nation. While it will probably be long debated whether Specter's complex and controversial political legacy merits mainly praise or criticism, Arlen Specter sheds new light on the life of a man who fought to make a difference. Evan Laine is associate professor of history at Thomas Jefferson University–East Falls. He is the program director of the law and society major and faculty director for the Arlen Specter Center. In fact, behind phishing, it is most often ranked as one of the top cybersecurity challenges by CISOs and CIOs. According to PwC's Audit Committee Update on Insider Threat, 44 percent of data breaches are attributable to insiders and 80 percent of attacks are committed during work hours on company-issued software. Insider threats can impact a company's operational capabilities, cause significant financial damages, and harm brand equity. The mean cost of a cybersecurity breach involving employees or others within an organization is $8.7 million, according to a Ponemon Institute report, “2018 Cost of Insider Threats: Global”. Some insider breaches are intentional and some are non-malicious, just the result of negligence. There have been a variety of recent malicious incidents that have included employees stealing hard drives of data, leaking information, and even inserting malware into networks.

Gola also helped the Philadelphia Warriors win the NBA championship as a rookie in 1956 and was named an All-Star five times before retiring in 1966. But Gola also had many amazing achievements as a coach. His La Salle Explorer teams were a large part of the national basketball landscape. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976. In Mr. All-Around, avid sports fan and reporter David Grzybowski provides a definitive biography of Gola. He uses exclusive interviews he conducted with Gola in 2013 and features anecdotes by many figures of Philadelphia and basketball history, including John Cheney, Fran Dunphy, and Lionel Simmons. After the NBA, Gola transitioned to a second career as a politician, serving as Pennsylvania State Representative and Philadelphia City Controller. His dedication to public service involved joining politician Arlen Specter on a campaign that revolutionized political marketing within Philadelphia. It is my first blog in last two weeks so i believe my nation is assuming that it should definitely be special one. In my opinion, this is the special blog but the main reason for the absence is that i was busy in some educational and my crazy socio-political activities. Anyway, it is time to address my nation.Stimulus Bill! this makes me think of some kind of plan to improve the economy of any country or state. Trust me don't look at it's cover page because all you are going to see the reminder of some change/hope rhetoric that obama used during his election campagin. Look inside! it seems boring as you look at its thickness (8-inch thick packet and 1171 pages) but it is full of jokes and some unnecessary items as you read it.Before Obama sworn in for the office of US president, he already pressured congress to pass this trillion dollar spendings and pork bill before presidential day break in Congress. On January 23, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that the bill was on track to be presented to President Obama for him to sign into law before February 16, 2009.Therefore, The House version of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Obama's stimulus package), H.R. 1, was introduced on January 25, 2009. It was sponsored by Representative David Obey of Wisconsin, the House Appropriations Committee chairman, and was co-sponsored by nine other Democratic representatives. Although 206 amendments were scheduled for floor votes, they were combined into only 11, which enabled quicker passage of the bill. As a result, on January 28, 2009, the House passed the bill by a 244-188 vote. All but 11 Democrats voted for the bill, and 177 Republicans voted against it (one Republican, Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL), did not vote). The Senate version of the bill, S. 1, was introduced on January 6, 2009. It was sponsored by Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Majority Leader, co-sponsored by 16 other Democratic senators and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats. The Senate called a special Saturday debate session for February 7 at the urging of President Obama. With a vote of 61-36 (with 2 not voting) the Senate voted on February 9 to end debate on the bill and advance it to the Senate floor to vote on the bill itself. On February 10, the Senate voted 61-37 (with one 1 not voting). All the Democrats voted in favor, but only three Republicans voted in favor (Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter). Sen. Judd Greg (R-NH) did not vote.On February 12, 2009, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer scheduled the vote on the bill for the next day, before wording on the bill's content had been completed and despite House Democrats having previously promised to allow a 48-hour public review period before any vote. The bill was not completed and posted on a House website until 10:45 PM on February 12. The next day, the House passed a revised version of the bill by a vote of 246-183, with no Republicans voting in favor and 7 Democrats voting against. The interesting part about this version of the bill is that no law maker or congressman made an attempt to read this bill. However, Democrats still voted for the bill that they don't even know what the contents of this bill are. On the same day, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 60-38, with all Democrats and Independents voting for the bill along with three Republicans. The remaining thirty-eight Republican senators voted against the bill. (Due to his illness, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) was unable to vote; there is one senate vacancy, for Minnesota.)The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 became a part of history as Obama signed the bill into law at an economic forum he was hosting in Denver, Colorado on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, upon returning to work after a 4-day weekend in his hometown of Chicago.Just for reminder, many congressmen and senator from the right called this porkulus bill, in another words, full of unnecessary spending that in no way on this earth stimulating economy or bringing jobs to unemployed Americans. I also agree with that opinion of Republicans' about the gist of this bill. Let's go through some provisions from this bill that are total pork and unnecessary legislation for stimulating economy:-->$4.2 billion to repair and modernize Department of Defense facilities-->$100 million to improve facilities of the National Guard-->$6 billion for renewable energy power generation loans-->$5 billion for weatherizing modest-income homes-->$4.5 billion for state and local governments to increase energy efficiency in federal buildings-->$3.4 billion for carbon capture experiments-->$2.5 billion for energy efficiency research-->$2 billion for car battery research-->$300 million for reducing diesel fuel emissions-->$6 billion for the cleanup of radioactive waste-->$600 million to cleanup hazardous waste that threaten health and the environment-->$200 million to cleanup petroleum leaks from underground storage tanks-->$500 million to update the computer center at the Social Security Administration-->$290 million to upgrade IT platforms at the State Department-->$50 million for IT improvements at the Farm Service Agency-->$1 billion in preparation for the 2010 census-->$650 million for DTV conversion coupons and DTV education-->$8 billion for high-speed rail projects-->$6.9 billion for new equipment for public transportation projects-->$1.5 billion for competitive grants to state and local governments for transportation investments-->$1.3 billion for Amtrak-->$750 million for the construction of new public rail transportation systems-->$750 million for the maintenance of existing public transportation systems-->$240 million for the maintenance of United States Coast Guard facilities-->$5.5 billion to green federal buildings-->$50 million for new TSA uniforms-->$198 million to design and furnish DHS headquarters-->$1.2 billion for summer jobs for youth-->$50 million for creating Frisbee parks-->$71 million for altering vehicle parks-->$1.2 billion for modernizing club houses and golf courses-->$246 million for tax-breaks for Hollywood film-makers-->$150 million for parking lots for dogs-->$2.7 billion for creating or renovating urban canalsThis list goes on but i have to finish somewhere so i believe they are the most important ones that my nation should be aware of. People believe me this is not it. The final version of the bill just includes $787 billion but White House has intentions to use more money than that they might use executive power to get $1 billion- $2 billion from federal reserve in this bill. Timothy Geithner, Secretary of Treasury, one who does not pay taxes because he is the head of the tax collecting agency, proposes to create one or more "bad banks" to buy and hold toxic assets, using a mix of taxpayer and private money. He also proposes to expand a lending program that would spend as much as $1 trillion to cover the decline in the issuance of securities backed by consumer loans. His announcement on the same day took DOW Jones 400 points down and it keeps going on since that day. Today, i read that this current stock exchange crash is the worst since the one in 1987.A February 4, 2009, report by the Congressional Budget Office said that while the stimulus would increase economic output and employment in the short run, the GDP would, by 2019, have an estimated net decrease between 0.1% and 0.3%. The CBO estimates that enacting the bill would increase federal budget deficits by $185 billion over the remaining months of fiscal year 2009, by $399 billion in 2010, by $134 billion in 2011, and by $787 billion over the 2009-2019 period. On January 28, 2009, a full page advertisement with the names of approximately 200 economists who are against Obama's plan appeared in The New York Times and The Wall St. Journal. The funding for this advertisement came from the Cato Institute. The ad stated, "... we the undersigned do not believe that more government spending is a way to improve economic performance. More government spending by Hoover and Roosevelt did not pull the United States economy out of the Great Depression in the 1930s... To improve the economy, policymakers should focus on reforms that remove impediments to work, savings, investment, and production. Lower tax rates and a reduction in the burden of government are the best ways of using fiscal policy to boost growth." On February 8, 2009, it was reported that a different petition, also signed by approximately 200 economists, but this one being in favor of Obama's plan, had been created. This petition was written by the liberal Center for American Progress Action Fund. The petition said that Obama's plan "proposes important investments that can start to overcome the nation's damaging loss of jobs," and that it would "put the United States back onto a sustainable long-term-growth path."Even Gallup poll showed that 22% of America accept the bill the way it is, 37% accept it with some major changes and 32% say that there is nothing about this bill that is stimulative. Rasmussen poll stated that 42% American do not support this bill, 36% support this bill and 22% are undecided.I hope you will love this new blog and i will wait for your feedback for this blog. I hope what ever decision Americans made in Presidential elections work out well in future. I pray that these porks will not even become a part of real life and save this economy simply by just using tax-cuts that are just 37% of this bill. Barack Obama definitely needs to take this stimulus bill under microscope because his presidential regime depends upon this economic plan.God bless America and people all around the worldThank you!© 2009 Syed Rizvi – Time To Bring Things Around All Rights Reserved
